“Arrow” star Stephen Amell regaled fans at the Salt Lake Comic Con with his stories about the show, his scenes, his past and his love of the character. He even thrilled the audience with a performance of the “Arrow” opening voiceover (which he couldn’t remember fully, since this season has a new voiceover). Of course fans also wanted to know what we could expect from season three. And SpoilerTV was there for all the teasers.
Amell says he’s seen four episodes from the new season already. In fact, he told the crowd, “Last night I watched the director’s cut for episode 3.04 and it was awesome! It is our 50th episode. It is worthy of a 50th episode and it has a scene and a confrontation in it that has literally been two and a half years in the making.”
While he doesn’t expand any more on that scene, he does highlight a lot of characters making returns and entrances on the show. “I can tell you that we have Caity Lotz coming back as Canary in our first episode. We have Mr. Barrowman (Malcolm Merlyn) joining us as a regular this year. We have Ra’s al Ghul. We do another fun travel episode where we go to Corto Maltese (a DC Comics fictional country). That’s exciting. Oliver is in Hong Kong. That’s also very interesting. We always have flashbacks and we get my good friend Colin Donnell - Mr. Tommy Merlyn - in the flashbacks this year.”
Amell also teases that Arsenal will be hitting the screen (Roy Harper’s superhero identity), along with The Atom (played by “Superman Returns” star Brandon Routh).
And don’t forget a crossover episode of "The Flash." “Spoiler alert,” Amell says, “I’m in the pilot episode of ‘The Flash,’ which is really exciting. And we have another character that’s crossing over in the fourth episode of ‘The Flash.’ And episode 1.08 of ‘The Flash’ and 3.08 of ‘Arrow’ are a big two-night crossover extravaganza.”
In addition, “Arrow” will feature a Felicity-central episode, which Amell says is titled “The Secret Origin of Felicity Smoak.” The actor was thankful because it gave him some rare time off. “I recently got four days off out of an eight-day shoot, which is a record for me,” he says. “I don’t have another day off until January. Felicity and Felicity’s mom afforded me four days of vacation. It was lovely.”
As for a relationship between Oliver and Felicity, Amell jokingly told the fan who asked about the coupling it was none of her business. But when the panel moderator pointed out it would be a risk for the two characters to get together, Amell countered by saying, “If we don’t take chances with our hearts, what are we even doing here?”
*****
At his panel, the “Arrow” heartthrob also talked about everything from kissing scenes to on-set injuries. Here are the highlights:
On booking his first acting role:
“When I was in Toronto and I got that first job on “Queer as Folk,” it was as a spin instructor – and I was a spin instructor at the time. I told my agent, ‘If I can’t get this job on ‘Queer as Folk’ as a spin instructor, I’m quitting the business.’ It worked out.”
On kissing scenes:
“My first regular job in the business was [playing] a ho. It was a hooker on “Hung.” After playing a hooker, everything else is relatively easy. But it does get a little bit funny. I feel like I have a good trick for it, especially if you’re kissing somebody that you’ve known for a long time. When you’re in rehearsals, the first time you have to kiss them - kiss them really passionately, but on the nose. It sort of cuts the tension.”
On how he taps into his emotions for important character deaths:
“As an actor, it’s not really my method to use experiences from my own life. In the instances of major characters who have died on the show, oftentimes it’s me being sad that I’m losing a friend. That was the case with Colin Donnell; that was the case with Susanna Thompson (Moira Queen). It was sad because you spend time with these people. It’s been two consecutive years that I’ve got a phone call from the producers saying, ‘We’re killing [so-and-so].’ I’m like, ‘Oh, really? Are we sure?’ Then the evil, creative side of me goes, ‘Oh, that’s gonna provide so much story.’”
On his “Arrow” audition:
“The breakdown for ‘Arrow’ came out. My cousin Robbie, who is playing Firestorm on ‘The Flash,’ says, ‘Have you read ‘Arrow?’’ I said, ‘I don’t even know what that is.’ He said, ‘It’s an origin story of The Green Arrow. I read the pilot script and I could only picture you.’ So I went in. When I walked in, I was the first guy to audition. I read the scene from the pilot where Oliver is being tortured by the three dudes. And then there was a much longer scene where I tell the three guys how I’m going to kill them. I read it and I finished and I look up and everybody is just staring at me. There were five people in the room and they said, ‘Can you please go outside?’ I went outside. I come back five minutes later and there were like 31 people in the room. There were other steps to go through but I got the part right there.”
On which other superhero he’d like to play:
“Iron Man. There is no better moment than when Tony Stark stands up and says, ‘I am Iron Man.’ I would love if there was just a moment where Oliver Queen was standing in front of a bunch of people and said, ‘I’m the Arrow, what the hell are you gonna do about it?’”
On how fit he was before he won the role:
“I grew up in Toronto. I played football, I played rugby. I swam, I played volleyball. I love sports. Track and field – I used to do high jump. I was staying in shape. I was in L.A., I was hiking all the time but I wasn’t going to the gym. I was just staying active because my body is my instrument in the vocation that I chose. And I happened upon ‘Arrow’ and now I get to do all these cool things.”
On how he likes to do his own stunts (even though he’s a little afraid of heights):
“I’ll always say, ‘Of course I’m going to do this.’ And if they won’t let me do it, I’ll demand to do it shirtless because then it has to be me. But then I’ll get 60 feet in the air, about to swing down and sweep Felicity off of a landmine, and I’ll be trying to look cool while really peeing a little bit in my pants.”
On playing a comic book character:
“We aren’t playing the television versions of Green Arrow and Black Canary and Flash and Firestorm and Arsenal. We’re playing THE versions. We’re trying to play the definitive versions as they exist right now. I’m very respectful of the fact this is a character that has been around since November 1941. And I meet people all the time that have spent their entire lives reading Green Arrow. So to be a modern interpretation and to hopefully live up to what they have experienced along the way, it’s very important to me.”
On how John Barrowman injured him in season one:
“It’s the scene in episode nine of season one where Malcolm - we don’t know it’s Malcolm yet - is just beating me senseless. He’s kicking me while he’s on the ground. And it was John’s first night in the costume. The costume is incredibly claustrophobic. He doesn’t have peripheral vision and he can’t really see down. And boy, oh, boy - he kicked me as hard as he possibly could in the leg. I felt bad because of how he felt. If you see him, tell him it still hurts.”
On his friendship and rivalry with David Ramsey (John Diggle):
“[In season on] he had come up as Diggle and whispered something into my ear. He said the dirtiest thing I had ever heard in my entire life. By the way, he’s not even on camera, okay? It’s a close-up on me. From then on, it was ‘on.’ If he messes up one of his lines, I almost pee my pants, I get so excited.”

ahh Tonya strikes again ! :D Thanks !! I love the way you make your articles !!
ReplyDeleteI don't understand why this article is necessary when everyone's already watched the panel here, or on youtube. LOL But thanks anyway, i guess.
ReplyDeleteThank for the transcript, I rather read stuff like this than watch the CC videos.
ReplyDeleteLove the auditioning scene, he must've been really good.
He went a long naked way to reach this role. At this point can't imagine anyone else playing Arrow. Don't even have a siggestion.
Because Tonya attended the panel and thought she'd share her experience with us. Plus, I'd rather read a transcript than watch the whole panel.
ReplyDeleteI have a doubt about comic cons. Do the people who attend these panels are usually part of the Internet fandom or are they regular viewers? Because I see quite a craze for Olicity in this live audience. I always read internet fandom is small and Felicity/Olicity might not be that big thing for viewers who is not on internet. So I would like to know how many of this audience is not part of internet fandom.
ReplyDeleteI am indifferent about Olicity, just curious about the statistics.
Thanks for the write up Tonya. Its clear from these cons the cast of Arrow has a great working relationship with each other. :)
I agree. Its easier to read transcripts as most of these cons actually don't give any new info.
ReplyDeleteThere's probably people from both the internet fandoms like Olicity and just regular viewers there.
ReplyDeleteI didn't say it was bad to share the experience, just meant that it's been OUT there already. But reading the transcript, eh, i could understand that.
ReplyDeleteIt's a mix. Half viewers. Half regular watchers.
ReplyDeleteIf you watched the panel, the same exact info here, is the same exact thing said in the panel. There's nothing new in this article that wasn't the said in the panel. It's just from Tonya's lips instead of Stephen's. That's the only new thing. lol
ReplyDeleteI missed this panel because I worked that day :( I hope he comes back to Salt Lake next year.
ReplyDeleteI am not saying the drop of ratings was not due to Laurel fans not watching but if I remember correctly even Felicity was hardly there in Promise only one dialogue so it could be both the fans of ladies who decided to not watch that episode.
ReplyDeleteMy question is how will regular fans who don't actually stalk internet spoiler sites like us know whether Felicity or Laurel is there in an episode or not before the episode airs and decide not to watch. Even after coming to spoiler tv I only knew The Promise was a flashback heavy episode, I had no idea if either Felicity or Laurel will be there or not. In fact I was sure after her injury in ToD Felicity will definitely won't be there that episode. Every one agreed here that she was completely unnecessary in that episode. May be fans of both ladies bowed out that episode but highly unlikely.
I think its the story line that in the previous episodes that impacted the ratings of the Promise. Only thing I can imagine is the contrived romance of Oliver and Sara and the resulting Lance dinner and making Laurel apologize which left a bad taste with almost all parts of fandom which made The Promise a low rated episode. Nothing else makes sense.
If we are talking about Olicity's airtime resulting in decrease of ratings I can't agree with that. IIRC most Olicity heavy scenes were in Season 2A when the ratings were strong and also the writing were crisp and tight(I am crediting writing and Barry Allen for good ratings). Only episode Olicity heavy in Season 2B was Tremors which was far away from The Promise. Then Olicity bits started popping up again in the last 3 episodes.
Personally I don't think either Laurel, Felicity or Olicity alone can influence ratings of this show. I believe the ratings of one episode depends on how the story went in the previous few episodes.
These cons fascinate me as I am from another country the thought that people would go and stand in lines to take a photograph and attend the panel is just amazing. I always see people cheering wildly when Felicity's name is mentioned in these cons. I was just curious. People needs to ask Amell new questions though. How many times he can answer the same thing.
He meant that panels usually don't offer spoilers so not worth watching the full video.
ReplyDeleteThat I agree. But for some lazy people like me who already knew nothing new came out of Salt Lake city CC can not see the video and skim through the transcript. They should have added this article to the youtube video thread so that people can decide whether to watch or read.
ReplyDeleteIf people can't watch it for w/e reason. Then yeah i'd put the transcript under the youtube video as well. Me personally, I'd rather watch the panel. It's more fun to hear the guests speak and hear the audience Q&As. I feel like i'm there, when i know i couldn't be. That's just me. Plus it's a bonus to see their faces. lol (Not just Stephen, i mean with all shows panels)
ReplyDeleteOh i know what they meant. I just meant SPECIFICALLY with this article, it's the same exact thing that was said in the panel. Nothing was left out of the panel, that anyone is reading here. I'm just talking this panel alone.
ReplyDeleteFrom what I have seen of all the cons they have attended, the audience is generally pretty crazy about Olicity.
ReplyDeleteThanks, Daniel. It was fun to be there and hear his stories!
ReplyDeleteAhhh thanks SophieFrenchy! So sweet. I appreciate it. :)
ReplyDeleteHey Shannon. I actually hadn't known the panel video was shared on the site until I'd already done all the work on this article. And like Babar said, many people don't want to take the time to watch the whole panel. So I figured for those who didn't have time to watch the full panel, I would share Stephen's comments. (And for those who don't follow everything about Arrow, some of the information was new to them.) I'm glad you enjoyed watching the panel!
ReplyDeleteThank you. I realized some would have watched the CC video but others, like me, don't want to sit and watch the whole thing if I haven't attended. (This time I did.) He really must have been great in his audition, right?! Yeah, he went a long way to reach this role. And I'm like you - I can't even imagine anyone else playing Arrow. Love your comments. Thanks.
ReplyDeleteMe, too!
ReplyDeleteHi O D A. Thanks for the comments and questions. Yeah, these cons are fascinating. I never thought I'd go to a con but it was actually really interesting. I think when some of your favorite celebs come to your city, you want to attend and see or meet them. (Attending the panels is free while getting an autograph or picture costs money. So people love the panels.) I think a lot of people who come haven't listened to videos from other cons - that's why they ask a lot of the same questions people have asked in other cities. They're fans of the show but not huge internet superfans. (In other words, they don't look up a lot of spoilers about the show all the time.) So I would say the audience is probably a mix, like others have said, with more fans of the show there. It's hard to say for sure - I didn't really ask anyone, I just knew they were Arrow fans. They sold out the convention on the last day. Judging from the audience, not all but many of them were Olicity fans.
ReplyDeleteAww. Thanks for your two cents. I appreciate it. = )
ReplyDeleteThanks Tonya for the reply. I am sure I would go for these cons too if it comes to my town. Maybe not for SDCC. That looks like a beast with people waiting long hours to get into a hall. I am really fascinated by people who cos play seriously and attend different cons all through the year.
ReplyDeleteSDCC does look like a beast with those huge lines. I haven't been but it looks crazy crowded! And cosplayers are indeed fascinating, aren't they? I really wonder how many people travel around going to different cons all throughout the year. :) My favorite costume at the Salt Lake Comic Con was a hilarious Sharknado costume that looked like a tornado wrapping a woman and then little mini sharks eating all kinds of different figures attached to it. Hilarious!
ReplyDeleteRecently during SDCC I saw an interview of a cos player who was saying how her costumes get damaged by air freight when she visits other countries for cons. She was talking about how costly the costume was and how FAA don't take real care of their luggage. My husband saw that interview and asked me where do these people get money and time to do these things? The Harley Quinn and Constantine cos play get together during SDCC was highly impressive.
ReplyDeleteThanks for posting this Tonya. You missed one big detail- Stephen said episode 8 would feature the beginnings of their Justice League!
ReplyDeleteThanks, Tony. I didn't hear him say that. How did I miss it? I will have to go back and listen again. :)
ReplyDeleteWow - that's interesting. I really don't know where people get the time and money to do all that.
ReplyDeleteNot actually true. Olicity heavy episodes were in first half of S2. Those had one of the highest ratings especially in the M18-34 demo group. Since Keep Your Enemies Closer till Three Ghosts the rating were excellent. I would even say even up to Heir of Demon, the ratings were great getting 1.1 for the episode. Then came the an almost month long hiatus due to the Olympic Games.
ReplyDeleteAfter episode 14 the screen time for both Felicity and Diggle was drastically reduced. Barely having a scene or 2 pro episode. Though Diggle did get his own episode with Suicide Squad. It was also the time when Sara was present in most aspects of the show: island, arrow lair, fighting together with arrow, sister time with Laurel, Oliver & Sara time.
Someone tried to point out to Marc Guggenheim that 22nd episode had better ratings then the finale, claiming its due to the fact that it had more Laurel (the person was only concentrating on the viewer numbers which are pretty worthless without the demo). But MG shot them down also pointing out the preemption due to baseball. Then when the final ratings the finale actually had higher number of viewers then 2.22 episode and also tied the season 1 finale in the demo, so i wouldnt say an episode is down or up due to a single factor.
And unless the Laurel fans are part of a Nielsen family they don't actually matter or count for these ratings. So people on the internet saying they wont watch a certain episode because it features a certain character doesn't always translate to ratings.
Thanks! Great article, I'm way too lazy about watching videos lol
ReplyDeleteYou're very welcome. Thanks for the nice comments! I know what you mean about watching videos. I don't want to spend an hour watching one, either, when I could spend 5 minutes reading the highlights! :)
