Well I'm happy you're not saying it. Sorry it's just I don't wanna get into another thing. I'm more focused on the Thea, Malcom and Ra's Al Ghul stuff. And the idea of a funnier Arrow intrigues and delights me. Arrow will always try for heartbreaking.
ReplyDeleteEven though Slade is not a major part of the season I guess they have to get the Slade fans (they are only fans of Slade/Manu no one else) watching even if it's just one episode. Please producers start caring more for those who actually watch the show regularly.

ReplyDeleteThey could have simply said Wildcat is being introduced and he will have an impact on Laurel's journey this season. That would have at least represented Laurel. Also one line about Captain Lance and his struggle. They didn't say or show anything new about Malcolm/Thea. The same could have been done for Lance family. I am not a fan of Laurel at all but she is a part of the show and should be acknowledged.

It believe this first episode romance will a bit more than usual - it is called the calm. And then (i hope) it goes back to have it in the back/as icing - but that grind Kreisberg has when he talks about Felicitys love life..... I hope the triangle is not too dranging.

ReplyDeletebut does Laurel have a big storyline in first half of season 3 is the question. It seems they doing storylines for characters that they didnt spend a lot of time on in previous season. Like Diggle, Felicity, Merlyn,Roy. 3x07 will be the one with Cupid. 3x08 crossover.

ReplyDeleteI didn't mind much when Laurel was avoided in the cw/wb and the twitter promotion fiasco. But this is an EP giving a preview of season 3. To completely avoid Laurel and Quentin Lance is just annoying. AK could have atleast said one line about them. They had time in the video to mention Slade whom we most probably won't see in season 3 at all.
ReplyDeleteYou're probably right, but if you're giving a sneak peek of the season, you have to, at least, dedÃcate a line to each important character. But like I said, it may be for the better, we don't want a repeat of the poster only because mentioning her took 3 seconds away from "relevant" Felicity or Diggle info.

ReplyDeleteWell, the things is that since most Oliciters (and I said most, not all) don't seem to care about storylines as long as they get their weekly dose of Olicity scenes, they focus on them because they're easy rating numbers.

ReplyDeleteI have a different opinion about fandom and shipping from you. I don't mind shippers unless they attack an actress. That is unacceptable. But unfortunately there is some bad apples in all parts of Arrow fandom (and every other fandom). People see tv shows for several reasons. Some for romance, some for a specific pairing, some for action, some for cool villains and most people for the complete experience of the show. It's okay whatever reason you have for watching a show. IMO its also okay for demanding and asking for news from producers about what you like after all they have kept their twitter account open for that purpose.
What is not right is when EPs refuse to acknowledge a character or diminish a character due to these demands. It's completely on them. Not on fans. People who don't call themselves shippers has this superior attitude as if they are better fans of the show. I don't agree. If the EPs don't have trust in their own product there is no point blaming a particular portion of fandom.

ReplyDeleteThey should, but Laurel get's hate while Felicty/Olicity get's lots of love, so they go for the hype. It really is all marketing relating, nothing more. Those of us who want more out of the show, have to let slide and wait for the actual episodes to air.

Most people whom I know that ship Olicity clearly only want Olicity to be the icing on the cake and not the cake itself.

ReplyDeletePopular opinion says it'll be Sin which is what will bring Roy and Sara closer and Sara to move down the darker path the EPs have been talking about this past season. Although, I feel as though Sin dying should move Sara down the hero path rather than villain because it was a bad guy who probably killed her, not a good guy.

ReplyDeleteI don't think I'm better, I'm really worried for the overbearing ammount of shippers lately though.
My reactions towards shippers are based on what I've seen happening in the past few months.
I shut up during season 2 but as the promo campaign went on some shippers grew more and more violent (in their wording) towards Laurel and Katie Cassidy (accusing her of being an addict because she turned so skinny and similar things) and I just couldn't bear it.
I know that most shippers love the show, I'm aware that a lot of them love the storyfocus.
But there's the bad crop the people doing stuff.....stuff...yeah let's just say it: bully real life people because they portray a character that stands between them and their dream couple.
Never been a fan of bullying and I admit, the term Olicity has turned sour for me. I know most aren't bullies but I have to constantly remind myself of that.
There're really disgusting people out there and sadly for those that aren't mean minded individuals a certain group of people has branded their fandom for me.
I wonder if he left Laurel out because lead actress or not, she's such a divisive character. I mean, why stir up controversy before the premier? Also, I think Laurel's year is going to be pretty uneventful (other than Lawyering and working out) which is why they don't have much to say? Idk.

That was the other way around
Those "bad apples" exist on all sides of the fandom (shippers and non-shippers alike) and not just in the Arrow fandom. I think it's best to just ignore it and focus on what you love, instead of bashing other people for what they love. If your favorite things about Arrow are the action scenes (which are awesome by the way) then you should focus on talking about that :)
ReplyDeleteIf they are avoiding Laurel in previews because of a bunch of fans in social media then shame on these EPs. Its their show, their product. Laurel and Quentin are their creations. If they don't have the guts to stick by these characters then what is their future.
ReplyDeleteI don't think Laurel's story line is going to be uneventful. She has to have some part in the overarching plot this season. After all they said Sara is the middle of it all. I hope they don't avoid Laurel in some episodes like they did in season 2. That didn't do the character any favor.

ReplyDeleteI did say MOST, not all, and I have met some very accesible Oliciters here who don't mind exchanging opinions, but my experience in social media (twitter and Facebook) is the exact oposite, one went as far to tell me to go kill myself because I don't get the awesomeness that is Olicity, all the while I was just trying to reason some of the rudeness out of them. All I'm saying is that, if you check Facebook and twitter you'll see that most request Olicity, Olicity, Olicity, and even though there's nothing wrong with that, this is not BatB, this is not a romance show, there're many more layers.

I've been a shipper, I am a shipper, not on this show, but I am, I just know to differentiate between fiction and reality and is those shippers that don't that bother so much. Criticize CW marketing all you want, I think they warrant scrutiny. However, blaming it on people who are vocal about what they love is unfair and just unproductive.

The only two people on Imdb that get REALLY rude are maguie (someone that just hates Arrow), kevvlar (the super sara fanatic) and josuerios (a really obsessive shipper with a tendency to go ballistic if you don't agree with him)
Oh no, I'm not talking about real world people. I'm talking about social media. I'm on TUMBLR of all places (usually I go there for info because it spreads like wildfire there) and I don't think oliciters (well most of them anyways) are as bad as people think they are. They're just passionate and vocal. A lot of them have valid criticisms of the show and don't bash people. I guess it's safe to say both of our experiences have been vastly different.

When I visited the FB poster fiasco I realised its mostly the same 8 or 10 people who keeps on posting degrading comments and going back and forth with fans of the other camp. Then there are few who silently support them by upvoting their posts. I agree, these people need to be called out. I am not aware about the twitter situation as I am not there. Too many anonymous people for my liking.

There are those who hate Laurel and bully KC, there are those who call people who don't ship Diggle/Felicity as racist, there are those who say if someone say Sara has to die for Laurel to become BC then they are homophobic and don't want any queer characters on the show, some bullied Stephen on his FB page when he said Laurel/Oliver won't work, some people tweeted to EBR she is sleeping with MG after he posted Felicity's apartment, also new one is if you dislike Laurel and like Felicity you are anti Feminist. If EPs are going to listen to every one of them then there won't be a show.
The fate and the future of the show is solely the responsibility of the EPs. The success and the fail of the show should fall on them and only on them imo. Blaming fans for their bad choices is not done.
Arrow EPs should take a page out of the 100 EPs. They keep all of their story line close to their heart unlike Arrow which has over promoted season 3.

ReplyDeleteIn the scene that Roy is holding Felicity, she's crying, he's pretty upset and we can see a third person (Oliver/Diggle) in the right corner looking down. Also there's a black stick in the middle. So I think Sara's shot by a black arrow and is lying in the foundry. =/
THIS!!! I so miss the days when EP's didn't cater to fans and just did their thing bringing to life the show they pictured. Yes, it didn't always turn out the way I wanted it, but it was their vision and that was fine. I just wish Arrow EP's exercised more of that... not only on the show, but in interviewes too.
ReplyDeleteThe way I see it, this show is going to have a romance no matter what. Olicity is the lesser of two evils. We either have Oliver/Laurel, which was loudly rejected even before Felicity showed up and Olicity became a thing, or we have the romance a majority of the fans want with a character that the majority of the fans actually like.
ReplyDeleteThe could have always gone Oliver/Sara again, but the back and forth between the Lance sisters is old already and actually kind of disgusting. Besides, Oliver and Sara just don't have that kind of chemistry imo.
So I'm glad the show is going the Olicity route. Now its the writers job not to screw it up.
IMO you should take all things happening on twitter and FB with a grain of salt (most of the fanatics won't get what we say any way) and criticize EPs in this occassion where they clearly avoided Laurel and Quentin for whatever reasons. This is wrong. Every regular character deserves equal representation from the EPs of their show.

ReplyDeleteThere should be a limit to how much EPs interact with fans. Let the actors do all the social media networking. You do your job and post some articles or interviews with real reporters if you got time after that. Also limit the amount of interviews. Is this the case with other network shows too? Arrow's EPs give the same interview to every blogger and every fan site on the internet. Which makes us read the same thing again and again.

ReplyDeleteWhen I read your post I get the impression that you are afraid that social media will explode with hate if one of the main characters/actresses is featured in a promo that mentions ALL the other main characters and even some who are secondary in relation to Laurel, like Slade. If you think that SOME social media fans (of which the majority are oliciters) will raise such a shitstorm that it will hurt Laurel/Katie, you really can't deny that something is seriously wrong with the "Arrow" fandom and that parts of the (mainly) shipper fandom is behaving in an irrational, petty and malicious manner. And although you may not like, my impression is that those who take such an irrational attitude towards Laurel/Katie are mostly hardcore shipper fans (and on twitter that is very apparent, both from the signature pics and handles).

The "Arrow" TPTB need to grow a pair and show the small minority of the overall viewership who lives on twitter/FB that they are not running the show, and that they won't ignore their lead actress out of fear of a few hundred social media fangirls.
Besides, what do they have to lose? As you say yourself, must olicity fans or other people who dislike Laurel for some reason are sane and mature enough not to throw a hissy fit because one of the protagonists is featured on a promo. In fact, I know many oliciters who reacted against the poster debacle and who said that they were appalled/ashamed of the behavior of some of their co-shippers. So, the portion of the fandom who behaves in this manner is a small fraction of the social media fandom, which in turn is a small fraction of the overall fandom/viewership. If the showrunners are leaving Laurel out of a promo out of fear of a negative reaction, they are giving this small minority an attention that they don't deserve, at least IMHO.
They probably still don't have any idea what to do with the her. These writers aren't exactly the best when Laurel is involved. Whatever they do with her usually ends up pissing off a ton of fans.
ReplyDeleteI feel kind of bad for them and Katie. After all, Laurel has been replaced as the love-interest by Felicity, and as Black Canary by Sara. Even if Laurel trains to be the Black Canary this season many people won't like it because it puts a target on Sara's back.
As for me, even as a Laurel hater I am somewhat interested in her arc. After all, I do like Ted Grant and him mentoring her could be the thing the show needs to get the rest of the audience on boards with her. However, I am afraid they may cancel out any goodwill from me if they make a romantic pairing out of Laurel/Ted. The fact that they cast a younger attractive guy scares me. So I'm keeping my fingers crossed that Laurel remains single this year. After all of her relationships ended you'd think she would.
As for calling Laurel a main character? The writers screwed up. From the middle of season 1 to the middle of season 2 she was shoved into the background (when the show started focusing more on Team Arrow) and used only as a love-interest or plot device. People got used to her being on the back-burner, and I think that's a part of why Laurel received such a negative reaction in the second half of season 2 when she actually felt like a main character again.
The writers really need to step up. If they can't make Laurel work, they need to drop her. And while I don't like KC's acting in Arrow, I have liked her in other things. The writers need to give her some good material to give her a reason to act. The problem with that is to give her good writing she'll need screentime... which I'm not sure I or most others in the fandom will react well to.
I don't envy Katie or these writers. Its going to be an uphill battle.
LOL! Then I'll just stick to my resolution to stir clear of Arrow social media. And I don't really dislike Olicity, I just don't care for them. I'm ok with them as long as they don't sacrifice any other character in sake of a ship. But I'll stay away all the same ;-)
ReplyDeleteI agree with most of what you say about Laurel not all but most. But Laurel is still a regular character. Not just Laurel, Quentin too. If it was just social media marketing I wouldn't have bothered. We know its filled with people who dislike Laurel. An itunes video clearly made for promoting to a wider audience and not just internet fans should involve all the regular characters.

ReplyDeleteOlicity is something that will excite the fanbase without showing anything of the actual heavy story... I mean, we all know how TV works: This "they go on a first date and he breaks things up to keep her safe" is nothing new and, like any other TV show, they're gonna wait 'till the Season 3 Finale to get Olicity together... dancing all Season.
The ship will NEVER, EVER, be something that outshines this show... If they did that Amell wouldn't keep quiet for once Jajaja The action and the story is the basis of this show. But you need romance on it, 'cause is good to see the characters you love being happy; it's another stage of character development.
But this marketing was not just for social media fans. This one just like the promo is made for a wider audience and as such it should include Laurel and Quentin too. It was released in itunes first. We will agree to disagree on this matter.
ReplyDeleteEpisodes are at least 8 days in filming and they only film Monday - Friday except (Canadian holidays) so it spans two weeks. NYFW is just one week and she could easily be in an episode in the other week.

ReplyDeleteI think he put one of his people on the Flash as EP, I think she was also listed on the Arrow press release. I am thinking he is mainly the name that attracts the most buzz for making a show. And he plans the basic idea for how a shows season will pan out.

Stick with Spoiler tv. I assure you people here are far more saner and normal than anywhere else. I checked few sites before sticking to Arrow thread here. The positive thing about Spoiler tv is the people here are tv fans and general audience mostly. IGN and avclub is mostly comic book fans who dislike things going away from comics, Fanforum and previously.tv is anti Laurel, IMDB is pro laurel and anti Olicity and Felicity. Twitter and FB are full of mad people. Tumblr is okay as long as you block lot of annoying fans and you will have to wade through tons of Olicity stuff to get something about any other topic. I have not gone to TWoP so don't know about them.

ReplyDeleteYoooooo! I hate American Football but I adore FNL. It's one of my most favorite shows! Come to think of it, most of the people whom I watched it with also didn't like/didn't understand football. But you come to fall in love with the characters :')

ReplyDeleteI was actually referring to the network and production companies not the EPs. I do somewhat agree with you though in the sense that the writers clearly don't plan romantic plots well and have relied far too much on annoying tropes like love triangles and this contributed to the horrendously annoying love triangle of season one, but I feel it's work with Sara and Oliver (and to lesser extent Thea and Roy, but that was mainly because I liked seeing Thea be so mature, caring and responsible) in season two was overall good if flawed. While I'm not pumped for Olicity nor against it, do I mind it? Hell no. I like Oliver and Felicity as characters, I like the weird, awkward yet funny interactions they have. I'm mostly looking forward to Thea and Merlyn vs. Team Arrow, Ra's Al Ghul, Ray Palmer, Felicity and Roy development, as well as daddy Diggle. And it'd be nice to see a lighter side of Oliver one closer to the comics, plus Oliver deserves some level of happiness and I just feel bad for the guy, his moms dead, his sister sort of hates him, it just sucks to be him.And to be honest Felicity is quite a catch.

ReplyDeleteHey Karin, I think you misunderstood me or just exaggerated what I said. Whenever I see an article about Laurel I usually see a lot more criticism than love (unfortunate for people who love Laurel, but true). While it can get pretty nasty when people from both sides start to argue, I'd say Laurel doesn't come up with a lot of positive articles. At least that's been my experience (Eg. tvline, previouslytv, avclub, tumblr, ew, here, IGN to name a few). Funnily enough, IMDB and sometimes Reddit is the exception when it comes to news about Laurel.
ReplyDeleteSomeone put it very succinctly below. The writers have written themselves into a corner where it's difficult to win with Laurel. They have a new romantic lead, and they introduced Sara who (from what I've seen) seems to be more popular with the non-shippers and shippers as well. So whichever way they move with Laurel, unless it's a completely different direction, her character might suffer by being overshadowed. So, I don't think you can firmly blame the shippers for being an issue. People have genuine issues with Laurel, and they tend to bring said issues up whenever a Laurel article comes up. Why? Because it's clear that the writers won't be addressing her issues head on. I fear they will just ignore everything Laurel went through as I feel they have by the end of season 2 where Laurel was essentially the same person we saw in season 1 but with an AA chip. But that's just my opinion. I'm sure you disagree, so let's just agree to disagree on this.
I really am hoping to like Laurel, IMO during my rewatch I've come to love Sara (I didn't really before). So if Laurel becomes BC she wouldn't compare to Sara (again, IMO) and you know how I feel about Oliver/Felicity :p I'm really smitten by them. So hopefully they play to Laurel's strengths and not completely retcon her character. I was actually (at one point) hoping they'd pull a Ward with Laurel, but unfortunately that's not the case. I'm interested in seeing where they take her character, hopefully they do her justice.
Also I don't think of Laurel as a female lead based on season 2 narrative (regardless of billing which is just semantics IMO), but we'll agree to disagree on that one too.
Alas, this is just how I feel. Please don't take my word as law because it certainly isn't (although I'd like to think I'm pretty objective).

ReplyDeleteI'm with you on everything, just add the extra excitement for Oliver/Felicity :p I really do hope they spend a lot of time on the characters/character development/relationship development in the firs half of season 3 (which they seem to be doing which is great!), then Ra's can show up and create a whole sh*tstorm that we saw in season 2 (except not quite as apocalyptic).
I'd actually really like to see Felicity interact more with Nyssa and Thea. Those would be interesting 'colors to blend'.
And I agree, I think Felicity is quite a catch. Damn Oliver, that bastard. I'd say he's lucky, but he's been through hell, so he deserves a bit of happiness.

It seems like a very reasonable and possible theory.
What is wrong with that? We all watch television, movies and read books for many different reasons. Some for storyline, genre, actor/actress, or romantic pairing. If someone wants to watch a show for a romantic paring, there is nothing wrong with that. Television is entertainment. It should be about whatever brings us joy to watch. I am not stating this to start an argument, but I have seen this view a lot lately. Like there is something wrong with someone for watching a show for one reason. I am a fan of Olicity, but I enjoy Arrow for other reasons as well. I will not speak for all, but I would say that the majority of Oliciters watch Arrow for other reasons as well, otherwise you could just go to Youtube and watch Olicity scenes without bothering to actually watch the show live. People are excited because of the promotions and because the new season is almost here. It may be the main reason they watch, but I doubt it is the only one. That being said. I am really excited for the new season. It looks to be a good one. For those worrying about romance being in the frontline. I doubt that will happen. Arrow has always been first and foremost and action show. The romance are simply seconds or minutes. Why don't we all sit back and actually watch the first few episode and then you can really have reason to complain if something isn't to your liking. I say this in jest, sort of.

ReplyDeleteLike I said, I never said my word was law. I specifically stated that my perception was from experience. I call it like I see it, and from all the polls, comments, media, articles, I've seen a heavy dislike for Laurel. But that doesn't mean that people who like Laurel are in the minority. Unless you poll every single person who watches the show, you can never know. BUT you can make educated assumptions.
Laurel's character portrayal is problematic because it is. She's the character the writers screwed up the most with (even the EPs have said that to some extent) so obviously people are going to bring it up. Why would Felicity be portrayed as problematic when she isn't? Sure they've made a few missteps with her by putting her on the back-burner and not giving her a proper backstory, but she's hardly the most problematic character (which is why you probably won't see a lot of criticism for Felicity). Every character on the show has their issues/problems, but for Laurel it just seems like there's nothing good going on for her at the moment. Again, I'd like to state, that this is my opinion. I didn't say it's wrong to criticize characters. If you want to criticize Sara or Felicity, go right ahead. Just be sure to back up your argument.
Look if you love Laurel, then that's great. Promote the Laurel love because lord knows she needs it. What I don't understand is why people waste their time complaining about crazy people who bash everyone (giving them what they want, which is attention because that's what they love) when they could spend their time spreading Laurel love and showing support for her character. I'd say this goes both ways. Criticize any character all you want, as long as it's valid and not spiteful. But people need to stop complaining and just moaning and spend that time talking about characters they love. I have no doubt that if people talked about how much they like Laurel after the finale, we'd be seeing more promotion. But then again, like I say a hundred times over, that's my opinion.
Again, we should agree to disagree because I'm not really in the mood for writing an essay.

First off I saw the budding chemistry of Oliver and Felicity, I was still surprised about the revelation for each other, it is really sweet whatever way it ends for Felicity.

Flash had been dormant for a while and I like this sort of rivalling going on with Ollie and Barry, obviously I want them to be on good terms.
Fatherhood is part of this season, which is a good family dynamic. Not only Diggle is going to be a father but Oliver as well, which these storyline may come middle of the season.
I can understand why Thea took off, I can imagine Oliver's fury of Malcolm leading her into darkness. I can see Malcolm being nice to Thea but is deceiving her.
Rag Al gu sounds like a scary baddie, to the point that Malcolm dared not to interfere with (yet, maybe).
And I think Slade will get back on the scenes, after all the suicide squad and Al gu/Malcolm stuff gets dealt with or at least to a standoff point. Would not surprise if Slade found a way out or got released by Argus.

ReplyDeleteIt's getting extremely annoying that Laurel is being ignored in everything to do with promotion for this season so they don't upset the haters/Olicity fans (that's not me generalizing every Olicity fan, btw). She might have a lot of haters but she does have fans out there and we're as much a part of this fandom as everyone else and we wanna hear about her story this season.

Have you guys/girls not seen the other promos that show her standing with Oliver while her dad is giving a speech in his captain uniform and then later on shows her braking a man's arm in a hospital bed? I just find this so petty...I mean, love your ship by all means (and enjoy the fact that it has become canon), but why do you need to indulge in this shipper rivalry BS? Of course, I know that someone will point out that Laurel/Lauriver fans do the same thing, and that is probably true. However, the online oliciters are so numerous that this kind of immature behavior become much more visible online.
