Season two of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. is almost upon us, and I for one can’t wait! I loved the first season from the first episode and the show only got better from there. I thought it would be a good idea to recap what happened last season and speculate a bit on what we know so far going into this new season. For people who may not have tuned in to last season, you can always catch up via the season one DVD, but really, this is the type of show that you can jump into even with its continuing plot lines and a new season is the perfect opportunity! Besides, if you’re an Avengers fan, you’re going to want to know all the nuances between the show and The Age of Ultron…
When last we saw our intrepid group of Agents, they had defeated Garrett (Bill Paxton) – several times – with Coulson (Clark Gregg) ultimately liquidating him with some of the alien tech the team secured earlier in the season. May (Ming-Na Wen) had managed to satisfy some of her anger in capturing Ward (Brett Dalton) who is now in custody. Skye (Chloe Bennet) is now an Agent and Coulson is now Director of a much smaller S.H.I.E.L.D. Triplett (BJ Britt) has joined the team who are reunited with Simmons (Elizabeth Henstridge) after she and Fitz (Ian Caestecker) were saved from a watery grave by Fury (Samuel L Jackson). Fitz is alive, but forever changed by the ordeal – how changed we don’t yet know.
The entire team is now in hiding at the Playground, another secret S.H.I.E.L.D. base run by Billy Koenig (Patton Oswalt), Eric Koenig’s (also played by Oswalt) brother? Clone? Only time will tell how many Koenig’s are out there! The episode ends with two disturbing scenes. We see that Skye’s father is apparently still alive – though dripping blood, and we see that Coulson has been affected more than he’s letting on by the Alien blood coursing through his veins – assuming he was awake while he was writing all those symbols on the wall!
The finale contained a couple of my favorite scenes. The first is Fitz’s confession that he thinks of Simmons as more than just his best friend – right before he tries to sacrifice his life to save hers. The second is the scene in which Fury identifies Coulson AS an Avenger and then appoints him Director of S.H.I.E.L.D.
Some of the things that I really appreciated about the first season that I think weren’t necessarily appreciated by die-hard Marvel fans was the time the series took to carefully build these characters. Jed Whedon and Maurissa Tancharoen did a great job helming when they had so many secrets to keep! Not everyone – Joss Whedon fans included – were willing to give the show a chance to build its own universe. It was never touted as a “superhero” show. Rather it was always meant to tell the story of the men and women behind the superheroes.
However, along the way, some of our Agents may have developed superpowers of their own. Is Coulson entirely human? Was Skye ever human? Are either of them a threat to the team? At the end of the day – or in this case the season, I’m still struck by the satisfying way that all of the story threads were tied together as the season played out. One example is the introduction of J August Richards as Mike Peterson in the “Pilot” and the entire development of Deathlok, continuing to the season finale that sees Mike’s relationship with his son and their conversation in the “Pilot” that they’re a team play a pivotal role in the finale. Simply adding more resonance to the conversation between Garrett, Coulson and Fury about what it means to be a team.
So, what is going to happen to our team this season? Ward is still in prison, but we’ve been teased that there will be interaction with the team coming up. I was slow to warm up to Dalton last season. His acting seemed stiff and slightly wooden to me at first. Of course, this all became part of his deep undercover persona, and I was completely won over to Dalton by the end of the season. I know a lot of fans really want Ward to pay – and pay hard! – for what he did to the team, but I think the show built in a psychology that really explains his actions in a fairly sympathetic way. I’m not sure he’s the best man for Skye, but I’d love to see him redeem himself and really rejoin the team.
BJ Britt is back as Tripp, but sadly as a guest star, not a regular. Of course that could be because he’s tied up with another Marvel project – he’s been spotted on the Age of Ultron set… Fingers (and toes!) are still crossed for a number of our intrepid agents to do likewise! Fitz will be rejoining the team, but no news yet on just what the lingering effects of his close brush with death will be. And we don’t know how Fitz’s relationship with Simmons may change in light of his declaration of love to her.
Joining the cast are Nick Blood as Lance Hunter – a mercenary enlisted by Coulson to help S.H.I.E.L.D. Clearly, Director Coulson is going to be thinking outside the box! Fans are no doubt excited to see Lucy Lawless as Agent Isabelle Hartley. One thing S.H.I.E.L.D. has delivered time and again is interesting women characters, so I’m very much looking forward to what Lawless will bring to the show! I’m perhaps most excited by the addition of Henry Simmons as Alphonso “Mack” Mackenzie. I’ve been a big fan of Simmons since his NYPD Blues days. And be on the lookout for yet another Koenig ‘brother’ to show up this season.
A few other guest stars to watch for include Reed Diamond as Daniel Whitehall. Whitehall is the Kraken – a HYDRA agent in the Marvel universe. Kyle MacLachlan will play “The Doctor” – Skye’s father! Again, I’ve loved MacLachlan since Twin Peaks. I can’t wait to see what he does with the part – it’s clear that he’s got the ability to play the tone of the show. Finally, I’m really excited to see Adrianne Palicki as Mockingbird.
Some of the things that have been teased for the upcoming season are that May has taken Skye under her wing, and subsequently, Skye is becoming a kick ass field agent. Meanwhile, Director Coulson is busy trying to rebuild S.H.I.E.L.D. Unfortunately, this would seem to indicate that Coulson is going to be spending a lot of time behind a desk – overseeing things – not with his two feet on the ground. Remember, Fury’s last words to Coulson were that he was leaving his view from above to get back into the field. I’m looking forward to Skye getting to show us what she can do, but I hope that they don’t keep Coulson behind that desk for long!
It seems like there will be lots of new chemistry in the mix this season, so I’m excited to see where the sparks fly. Clark Gregg and Ming-Na Wen in particular manage to clearly have fun and relish their roles without making it seem hokey or taking us out of the universe. Hopefully, the new additions will also strike that crucial balance. Will May have a new love interest? What about Skye? And of course, what about Fitz and Simmons? I’m also excited to see how the Agent Carter universe is going to fold into this one, and how the next movie will as well.
What are you most excited about coming into the new season? Do you want to see Ward back with the team? Which new character are you most excited to see? Are you pulling for Fitz and Simmons or do you want to see more sparks fly between Simmons and Tripp? Let me know your thoughts in the comments below! That was a great read thanks Lisa!
ReplyDeleteCan't wait for tomorrow and this has got me even more excited!
I've been a fan from the very first episode and I've loved it ever since. Can't wait for Season 2 to start, it's almost here :)
ReplyDeleteI am so excited about the new season, definitely one of the shows I am looking forward to the most! To all the people that bailed, they don't know what they are missing now, I hope they come back!
ReplyDeleteYou did a wonderful job summarizing were the show left us last year and teasing us what's ahead! Can't come soon enough ;)
I'm super excited for the show to return, I need my MCU fix!
ReplyDeleteWhat I want from the forthcoming season:
X Definite answers about who/what Skye is and the weirdness happening to Coulson.
X Cool links to Agent Carter and the past.
X Finding out more about Trip especially his family history.
X Fitz dealing with Ward's betrayal.
X May and Coulson trusting each other again.
X Simmons learning to lie better ;)
X No redemption for Ward. Its way too early.
X The season moving towards what happens at the beginning of Age of Ultron re Hydra and then hopefully some fallout from Ultron's attacks in the final couple of episodes.
Hope coulson doesn't spend too much time behind a desk.
ReplyDeleteI agree with every single item on your list :)
ReplyDeleteI want to find out more about Trip because they didn't have time to develop him in the early episodes of last season, like they did with the others. By his second or third episode, the HYDRA shit was hitting the fan and there was no time for that.
Also:
- May "Cavalry" backstory.
- NO love triangles whatsoever. In fact, minimal romance would be for the best AFAIC.
- Fitz dealing his new disabled status in a realistic way, a long and hard road to eventual full recovery. No fixing him easily via GH-325 or some other "magic".
- Lots of badass fight scenes, especially when they involve May doing a lot of damage to a lot of foes.
- More snarktastic Coulson lines.
- Lola should dramatically save the day in another episode, like 1x20.
- Make Isabelle, Hunter, Mac, Mockingbird (!) and the other newbies cool characters.
- Tell us more about HYDRA, their goals, their methods, etc. Also explore Raina further.
- Ward should be in prison for at least most of the season (there needs to be SOME penance for what he's done) and slowly transition from enemy to frenemy. Eventually he can get out somehow and be a "free agent" type of character. He can help Coulson and co. on some missions but NEVER as part of the team. I don't want to see anyone forgiving or trusting him (and I'd love to see FitzSimmons get some payback), but working with him sometimes because they have no choice. And for the love of god, no SkyeWard whatsoever. Ewww.
I agree so hard about Ward, free agent type who helps them out but they are always wary about seems the best solution to keeping him on the show long term.
ReplyDeleteI completely forgot about Raina, yes I hope we see more of her. And also hope Fitz gets a great storyline.
Thanks! This is one of the shows that I'm most excited to see come back!
ReplyDeleteI completely agree with the lack of wasted motion - one of the best things with the show is the careful writing and plotting. And let's face it, you need to have a few red herrings, right? I think we might get unrequited love rather than love triangles... but I agree. In general, I prefer relationships that don't diminish the action! LOL!
ReplyDeleteThanks! Here's hoping lots of them were smart enough to re-watch over the hiatus and figure out what they were missing.
ReplyDeleteYes!
ReplyDeleteI am most worried about this! We need Coulson in the field!!
ReplyDeleteMe too I love him too much for that boring stuff to take away what we like about him.
ReplyDeleteI was glad to see that she's in episode 2, she's one of the more intriguing villains they've had and I want to find out about her sciency/evolutionary obsession and how she's connected to HYDRA and Skye's dad.
ReplyDeleteBut he needs to continue wearing his suits even when he's out in the field, like he did last season. :D
ReplyDeletePut me down for no love triangles as well. Unrequited love, okay, but love triangles are so overdone and so rarely done well. And that whole Trip/Simmons thing always felt forced and awkward to me anyway. I have zero desire to see them go there.
ReplyDeleteWhat suit, it's grafted into his skin right about now ;) He can NEVER take it off!
ReplyDeletenumber 7 on that list makes me really happy..
ReplyDeleteThank you so much for writing this! :)
ReplyDeleteI agree no love triangles. I just want one show on tv with characters who have a bond as a team and friends without all the romantic will they or won't they shenanigans. I love Skye and Simmons as a friend to all the guys on the team without any sexual or romantic tones. Just co-workers. If they do at some point go the romance route/relationship way I want it to be solid with no competitive love triangle foolishness. If they want to put FitzSimmons or any of the others on this show together someday down the road then make it a solid relationship and leave them be. Don't go the introducing new characters route who tempts one of the couple to stray foolishness. Or worse when shows have two guys fight over a girl to prove their worth to her and win her as their lady. Gag me.
ReplyDeleteOh, I forgot one thing: I too am hoping for an Age of Ultron crossover but I wonder how it can work. HYDRA made sense - spy vs. spy. But threats like Ultron are way too big for our merry band of non-superpowered agents. I'm not sure they can even take one Ultron Bot. Although, I suppose there can be some other type of fallout that can be done on the show's scale.
ReplyDeleteYes, yes, yes. No love triangles, ever. It always makes all of the characters seem like immature hormonal teens.
ReplyDeleteFrankly, I'm also against romance inside the team, at least with the couples everyone seems to like. FitzSimmons are more like Siamese twins than a couple to me. Coulson and May - much more suitable as friends and comrades-in-arms who respect and trust each other so much than lovers. And SkyeWard just makes me want to hurl.
We need his classic snark! Always!
ReplyDeleteSuit for the win!
ReplyDeleteMy pleasure! Thanks for reading!
ReplyDeleteI was actually not a fan of Fitz's confession of loving Simmons. I thought that it was well-written and that the writers pulled it off well, but it's such a cliche plot twist to have the male fall in love with his female friend and then act tortured by his newfound unrequited feelings for her while she remains blissfully ignorant only to let her know with some grand gesture or some pivotal moment. I wish that the writers/ executive producers could have just let them keep their beautiful platonic friendship instead of going down the obvious path of romance.
ReplyDelete(full disclosure, I was shipping Skye and Fitz hard, especially towards the middle/ end of the season so I might not be completely objective in my analysis of this pairing. )
I loved Lisa's voice in this review and hope I didn't come off as too harsh or rant-y in bashing the romantic pairing of FitzSimmons, which was pretty much a ship name even when their relationship was platonic.
I would've preferred for them not to go there at all with FitzSimmons in the romantic sense, but alas. Now that the cat is out of the bag regarding Fitz's feelings for her, I guess we have 3 options:
ReplyDelete1. Fitz spends the rest of the series making sad puppy dog eyes at Simmons because she doesn't return his feelings.
2. Simmons realizes at some point that her feelings for Fitz have turned romantic and they get together.
3. Fitz eventually moves on.
I think 3 is the best and healthiest option. 1 would suck, Fitz deserves better, and 2 would feel somewhat contrived - I know some people do go from a platonic friendship to a romance, but FitzSimmons have known each other for a few good years now. It would be a little hard to buy Simmons suddenly being attracted to Fitz in that way if she hasn't been until now.
I would also prefer Skye/Fitz (or Skimmons) to FitzSimmons even though I don't ship any of these. I just can't get into pairings where it feels like the show is beating you over the head with it from day one: "THEY ARE OTP!!!!!" (which is why I was also against SkyeWard from day one, long before he was revealed as a traitor). FitzSimmons make much more sense as BFF's. Skye/Fitz or Skimmons, if it were to happen, would feel like the build-up had been more subtle.
ReplyDeleteBut I think FitzSimmons WOULD be a huge build-up. From everything Elizabeth Henstridge has said it feels like Fitz and Simmons will have a huge fallout in season 2. They'll have time to grow as individuals and to strengthen their bonds with other people (two things I think they surely need), I feel like their friendship alone will be a build up. The thing is, for FitzSimmons to work as a couple I think Simmons would have to start liking him slowly (preferably after they regain their friendship) and their progess as a potential couple should be slow as well. Fitz will have to learn to deal with his feelings and he'll have to make a REAL confession because the one at the finale was the truth, but he only said it to convince her to take the oxygen tank. Anyway, as far as subtleties go, I don't feel like ANY pairing build-up on this show will be extremely subtle (except for the MayWard pairing that had such a subtle build up that it's "like" it wasn't even there).
ReplyDeleteThanks! And not harsh at all. One of the things that I actually like about the show is that nothing is as it seems. It seemed like the show was pushing FitzSimmons - but is it really going to happen even now? Should it? Does Simmons really feel the same or will it be some misguided obligation? And the Skye/Ward thing was weird obsession on Ward's part - Skye really was lukewarm to him before she started playing along. She really did just want to have a drink with him in the beginning - because she already had a boyfriend we didn't know about yet. I think like almost everything on the show, the writing is more complex and nuanced then a lot of people give it credit for. So, I definitely liked the Skye/Fitz chemistry too! Who knows, maybe that will play out this season too! In the end, I think the show also gets the relationship/shipping in the right proportion.
ReplyDeleteYeah, I'm not denying that FitzSimmons have had the build-up - if anything, I feel like they may have had too much: like I said, when it's made really obvious from day one that a show intends to put a couple together, it kinda puts me off them. I prefer not to have romance anvils dropped on me by the writers.
ReplyDeleteNow, don't get me wrong: if written decently, romantic FitzSimmons wouldn't ruin the show for me or anything. It's not a gag-worthy pairing like SkyeWard (for obvious reasons). I just feel like their dynamic makes much more sense for BFF's than a couple. But obviously, mileage varies.
Someone suggested that Fitz could catch Mockingbird's eye when she shows up. I think that could be awesome. Poor Fitzy deserves some lovin'! Plus, a female badass/male geek pairing is still fairly novel, I think. It seems on most shows, a badass woman has to have a badass boyfriend as well, or else it's too much of a play on the gender dynamics viewers are used to.
ReplyDeleteI completely agree about NOT defining our kickass women Agents by their romantic relationship to the men! We do have the strong bond/friendship between Coulson and May...
ReplyDeleteOMG! YES to this idea! I'm totally shipping this now... Mitz?
ReplyDeleteWell, the deleted scenes from Seeds did hint that Simmons may have been interested in Fitz initially before mistaking his shyness for competitiveness. They were pretty subtle about it, but the implication was definitely there.
ReplyDeleteHAHAHAHA, it's a good thing I wasn't drinking anything as I read this :D I agree with what you guys are saying and as much as I think I'd like FitzSimmons pairing, if it felt like an obligation I wouldn't enjoy it as much. Oh well, I guess I'm gonna trust the writers, we saw in season 1 that they're good at putting things into place and giving things the right momentum. Like a lot of people complained about the first episodes, but they made the last few that much more impacting, the writers are good with those small details that everybody thinks is unimportant. What ever they decide for the characters I'll truely believe it's for the best ...even if it does mess with my ships (*pouts like a child) :)
ReplyDeleteI also think people to default to thinking that if two characters are close, the best possible outcome is romance. I just don't agree with that. I find strong platonic friendships just as rewarding, storywise, as romance - often more so, since a lot of TV shows do such a poor job of writing romance.
ReplyDeleteCase in point, I love that May and Coulson are so close and trust each other implicitly and always have each other's backs - she's truly his right hand woman in every sense. I love how he feels comfortable expressing his doubts and concerns to her. I love that they have a history together. The scenes last season after Coulson finds out May was reporting him to Fury behind his back were downright heartbreaking. Why do we need to turn all of that romantic? It's perfect as is. It's not of any less worth because it's "just" a friendship, in my opinion. Trying to picture these two as a couple is really awkward to me and I much prefer where they are now.
Totally agree.
ReplyDeleteI think the writers have earned our trust - and I don't give it easily! I'm with you - I'm along for the ride and feel like I'm in good hands!
ReplyDeleteAfter watching "Shadows", I definitely see the value of having Fitz develop feelings for Simmons. Now that we know Fitz was in love with her *spoiler alert!* it makes his hallucinations of her that much more heartbreaking. Ward's obsession with Skye is also kind of creepy and tragic at this point too since now she is pretty much literally all he has to live for. I really liked this episode- it was kind of what I wanted the first half of season one to be. It was worth the wait, I just hope that the fan-shedding of season one didn't harm its prospects for survival too much.
ReplyDelete
