Can Felicity become the Black Cannary?
ReplyDeleteSara!!
ReplyDeleteWas there really a need to even ask this question ? ;)
ReplyDeleteDefinitely Sara!!! Laurel is so $@%@^#%^@ annoying!!!
ReplyDeleteSara. There is nothing that the show can do to show me Laurel has the sense to be a superhero. She'd probably get drunk and shout "I'M THE CANARY" all around Starling City.
ReplyDeleteHahahahaha good one! Sara always and forever.
ReplyDeleteI would definitely not pick Felicity. For one, she has even less self defense training than Laurel does, so if Laurel's lack of training and skills is an argument against her being the Canary, it should definitely apply to Felicity as well. For two, I like that Felicity's contribution is based on brains rather than brawn. We've had how many "action girls" on Arrow now? Sara, Helena, Shado, Isabel, Nyssa, China White, I guess even Laurel sometimes... and it looks like Thea will be trained by her bio-father. As much as I love it when women kick ass, I also want to see female characters who are powerful in other ways, like Moira, Felicity or Waller. Felicity should learn self-defense, in my opinion, so she isn't defenseless like when the Count grabbed her, but if she became a full-on fighter it would actually diminish the character in my opinion.
ReplyDeleteYeah, with the remarkable survival instincts that compelled her to stay in a building that was about to collapse due to an earthquake, something tells me that Laurel wouldn't have a very successful (or, you know, long) career as a vigilante.
ReplyDeleteJesus so then Laurel, Sara, Helena, Shado & Isabel all had a thing with Oliver. And at some point they would all put on a vigilante suit. *sighs* I still miss Shado :(
ReplyDeleteI don´t care if I´m in the minority. It has to be Laurel. What would be Sara´s Journey for the rest of the show. She´s fully elaborated and she wants to rest. How many obstacles can you create until she finds rest without creating disbelief.
ReplyDeleteSara of course...who else!!
ReplyDeleteDefinitely Sara. Definitely not Laurel.
ReplyDeleteNeither. A long lost Lance sister will appear and take the position! ;-)
ReplyDeleteJoking! I think Sara fits the role well. Laurel should become a DC Heroine of her own like Dove, Cherishor something ;-)
Sara should play her until the final episode ( in 8 years ) of Arrow then tragically die saving her father and Laurel, the final frames of the show could be Oliver training her and his son Conner Hawk to be vigilante like him.
ReplyDeleteSara. Enough said.
ReplyDeleteShe could if she was to fall in love and marry Edward Rockwell aka Edward Raymond ( becoming Ronald Raymond aka Firestorm step mother ) but tragically he was caught up in world that is Arrow and she asked Ollie, Diggle, and Sara to train her so she could always be able to protect her stepson ( not knowing of his secret identity ) at all times from the men who were still after him. Of course one thing would lead to another and she could be fighting crimes as Arrowette or Oracle with killer computer skills as well as fighting skills to match.
ReplyDeleteFelicity is my favorite character but I don't want her to be Black Canary...that's not who she is, that's not what she brings to the team. I like Felicity as she is...although adding some basic self defense skills wouldn't be a bad thing.
ReplyDelete-Stays in building about to collapse
ReplyDelete-Tommy attempts to save her
-Tommy dies
-Viglante's fault
By that logic, there's no point to Oliver being the Arrow. He's had just as much of a journey as Sara.
ReplyDeleteUgh, no. Sara's character arc should not amount to 'holding pattern until she can die to inspire OTHER people'. That would just be bad writing.
ReplyDeleteSara, without a doubt
ReplyDeleteI want her to start carrying a mace or taser with her when she goes on dangerous missions. Granted, it wouldn't help against the heavy-hitters, but at least she'd be able to handle common mooks.
ReplyDeleteCheshire is actually a villain, although I don't know that that wouldn't fit Laurel better.
ReplyDeleteYes, that's exactly what I want.
ReplyDeleteSara is ahead of Ollie. Ollie tries to be not a killer anymore and falls back into old habits sometimes, like with count vertigo, whereas Sara is completely done and fed up with it. She almost mentally colapses when it comes to killing as we´ve seen in her conversation with Nyssa.
ReplyDeleteMy point is, if you can't tell compelling stories about someone who is already an established hero/character, then that's the fault of the writer, not the character.
ReplyDeleteYeah, Felicity should use her brain to fight, not suddenly become a physical badass.
ReplyDeleteI want her to have gadgets and she can make the phones explode (Clock King style), but not actually put on a costume. Well she actually kind of has an costume. With her ponytail, bright lipstick and cute dresses. Its sort of her gear for fighting crime.
ReplyDeleteSara. Why trade good for questionable? We already have a Black Canary that fits the role perfectly. If the name is the only thing that matters, then make Sara have Dinah as her middle name.
ReplyDeleteI'm the Canary! I'm ENTITLED to your respect!
ReplyDeleteNope. I want Felicity to be Felicity. I'd rather if she stayed a hero behind a desk. I love her as a moral compass and conscience instead of an active vigilante.
ReplyDeleteUntil now Katie Cassidy had a boring role as Laurel but she can still change. We all saw her in Supernatural so we know she can be badass. :) In my opinion she's more beautiful then Sara, I can't stand Sara's weird chin/lips, I can't watch her. So my pick is Laurel.
ReplyDeleteYour pick is Laurel because she's better looking? lol
ReplyDeleteFelicity could become a 'vigilante' in her own right if she was to fall in love and marry Edward Rockwell aka Edward Raymond ( becoming Ronald Raymond aka Firestorm step mother ) but tragically he gets caught up in the world that is Arrow and is murdered. She could ask Ollie, Diggle, and Sara to train her so she would always be able to protect her stepson ( not knowing of his secret identity ) at all times from the men who were still after him.
ReplyDeleteOf course one thing would lead to another and she could be fighting crimes as Arrowette or Oracle with killer computer skills as well as fighting skills to match sooner then later.
You mean the step son Ronnie who will show up on Flash and be Felicity's age? Making Ed Raymond old enough to be her dad?
ReplyDeleteIf Ronnie was 16 and his father had him when he was 17 he'd be 33 and only 10 years older then Felicity ( Emily is 23 ) Smoak, so a older man not father material.
ReplyDeleteHas someone already been cast in the role ?
Felicity is 25/26, and Ronnie (played by Robbie Amell) will most probably be the same age.
ReplyDeleteHe isn't 16 because he's Caitlin Snow's fiance.
ReplyDeleteThis argument again? OK fine.
ReplyDeleteLook we get it. Sara has proven to be an interesting and generally well executed character. Caity Lotz has done a great job bringing her to the screen. The same can be said about Felicity and how Emily Bett Rickards has portrayed her.
And either of them getting together with Oliver, who seems to have a thing for every blonde that walks in front of him would be fun to watch. I understand the appeal.
But how many times can this argument be brought up? Look: get it through your heads. This is a GREEN ARROW show. GREEN ARROW ends up with BLACK CANARY. And that is Laurel. Period. End of story. Full stop. Capiche?
Robbie is 26 so he'll likely be playing a 20 year old ( 20 + 17 = 37)
ReplyDeleteThey could always can Robbie Amell and hire either Sterling ( young Ben Linus - Lost ) Beaumon, Robbie ( Peter Pan - OUaT ) Kay, or Dylan ( David Shephard - Lost / Rex - Awake ) Minnette instead for the role of Ronnie.
[ Sterling is 19, Robbie is 18, and Dylan is 17 ]
lol Emily is 23 and plays 25/26 year old, KC is 27 i think and plays 29 year old , Caity is 27 and plays a 26 year old. So not always.
ReplyDeleteGA and BC got a divorce also. And Dinah Drake is back to being the Canary now.
ReplyDeleteThanks.
ReplyDeleteDanielle Panabaker is 26 so she is likely playing 20 / 22 as well.
If Ronnie's dad had him at 17 he would only be 39 to Felicity's 26
[ 13 years difference between the characters ]
Sara, but we all know shes going to die at some point. Laurel is going to become the second black canary, like in the comics she becomes one after her mother.
ReplyDeleteCaitlin is more likely in her mid 20s as well.
ReplyDeleteYou're splitting hairs. This is an origin story. What happens after the series finale is up to anybody's imagination but up to that point the producers will take the long and winding road to get to the inevitable conclusion; which is that Oliver and Laurel end up together.
ReplyDeleteAs for Dinah Drake being Canary now: Superman is currently with Wonder Woman. That doesn't invalidate that the Superman mythology has Superman with Lois Lane, nor that he won't again.
The same comments and argument were used when people really, really, really wanted Clark to end up with Chloe. Guess what? The story ended with Clark becoming Superman and ending up with Lois as he was supposed to.
I think you may have commented in the wrong poll. This is about who is a better BC. Nothing to do with who ends up with who...
ReplyDeleteUm no. The question is "Who should become Arrow's official Black Canary until the show is done?" The answer is, should be and will always be: Laurel.
ReplyDeleteIts the other posters that are making this about who they ship.
Exactly, who is better BC, not who Oliver ends up with.
ReplyDeleteFunny, you're the only one I see talking about ships :)
Regardless, Laurel is terrible in the show and the audience's response is more than enough proof.
ReplyDeleteWe already are getting origin story with Sara. So why do i need to see a repeat of a origin story, that will be lacking compared to Sara story. You decided to involve the comics! And chose to mention that GA and BC are meant to be. But not everything that works in comics, will work on a TV series.
ReplyDeleteAndrea read the question again. Its not who is better as you keep insisting. Its who "should".
ReplyDeleteOf Course it should be Sara. Laurel is so behind in terms of training and experience that another poll should be made whether Laurel is fit enough to be Thea's sidekick now that Thea has trained with Malcom, league style, 24x7 for the last 7 months whereas Laurel is busy being the DA.
ReplyDeleteGreen Arrow ends up with Black Canary - who uses her first name, Dinah, and sports a leotard, black fishnets and kitten heels - in the same universe where he doesn't have a sister, his mother dies before he actually puts on the hood, he has a beard and very liberal political views, his name isn't just "Arrow", his city is called Star (no "ling") City, Felicity Smoak is some older broad with a son who has nothing to do with GA, John Diggle, Tommy Merlyn, Sara Lance and a bunch of other people don't exist, there's a Nyssa Raatko rather than a Nyssa al Ghul, Merlyn is just a supervillain alter-ego (his real name being Arthur King) rather than the guy's last name, Rose Wilson is the Ravager rather than Isabel Rochev... etc etc.
ReplyDeleteIn short: if "It's in the comics" is the best you can do, you need to come up with a new argument, at least if you're going to be condescendingly telling people "Capiche?" because you think that makes you sound superior.
You know what would have been cool (aside from casting an actress that actually had chemistry with Amell, of course)? If Laurel had become so devastated by the death and betrayal of her boyfriend and sister that she turned into a hard person, spent those 5 years training self defense and other martial arts as a way to channel her anger and became super focused on her job and bringing justice to those who had none.
ReplyDeleteWe'd have an AWESOME character who not only cared about helping those in need but already had training in fighting.
I don't see how Laurel's development into becoming Black Canary is lacking in comparison to Sara's story. In fact I would argue the opposite. With Laurel we're seeing her development first hand. Its with Sara that she has gone away and we've only been told that she was taken and trained to become a master assassin. We still might see what happened to Sara eventually but again I don't see how being told about Sara's origins is better than actually seeing Laurel's
ReplyDeleteAs for not everything from comics working on TV: you're right. Not everything does work. But that doesn't mean it won't happen. Rest assured the story will end with Laurel as Black Canary.
Again, that has nothing to do with ships. If you're only argument is: because I said so, try again.
ReplyDeleteEVERYTHING about Laurel is lacking. When a character that is supposed to be protagonist is missing from two episodes and nobody notices, then the problem is even worse than we thought.
ReplyDeleteBut I'm guessing you work for the show and already knows how the story goes ;)
Laurel as a character hasn't work so far. Even the EP admitted it and are trying to save the character. They had 46 episodes to try and fix it and it had little effect yet. They promised at beginning of season 2 that Laurel will becoming kick-ass and there is a great story for her. They repeating almost the exact lines for season 3. And that doesn't give me all that much confidence that they even know what part of the character doesn't work. And there will be a small issue with the actor they cast as WildCat this year and he might not be available all the time for shooting.
ReplyDeleteLet me start by saying for the record that my initial comments were open. Directed to everyone and no one. It is you that decided to respond directly using terms like condescension. So before fully reply let me ask you this. Do you really want to get into it? Do you really want to get spanked in front of all of these people?
ReplyDeletesara She's the whole reason i've been watching season two well the main reason
ReplyDeleteYep, I Agree with that.
ReplyDeleteDoes anyone else not care about Black Canary? I'm really tired of the BC story in general and I hope they can focus on other characters this year.
ReplyDeleteLaurel was in the building in S1 to save the files of her clients from being lost in S1. That's something a hero would do. Or when she went against Olivers wishes of staying back and followed him into the cave and saved his life or when she took on those thugs that broke into her apartment in S1 with that shotgun. Or when she beat those guys at the club and helped Tommy and Oliver. And despite not always using her fists to help she showed it throughout s1 when she tried to bring multiple criminals to justice and help as many clients as she could using the law.
ReplyDeleteYes Laurel was a pill popper and a drunk in S2, but people act like she did it for fun. She was suffering through survivors guilt and depression. And despite this, she still came out a stronger character in the end. She's far from perfect, but good written characters make mistakes and are not perfect 24/7. She has depth to her now since dealing with her demons. But people never want to see reasons with Laurel, just ugh I hate her or ugh she's annoying.
Her BC is about journey. While she has martial skills training, is she ready to be a vigilante now? No. Will she down the road as she trains in S3? Yes
I love a slow burn, not being a superhero in 1 2 3 like Roy.
Either way Laurel Lance will be the black canary. Its her destiny. Enjoy the ride, or don't. It doesn't matter cause in the end she'll be the one with the canary cry.
Ronnie in the Comics was a teen when he became firestorm, CW will up his age to fit into the show but I would say he would be a few years younger than, Ollie, Felicity and Barry but not by much.
ReplyDeleteHonestly I don't care about BC at all. Why not make Laurel another version of Canary (comic book fans can be happy and Sara fans can be happy) and send both sisters away from the show on a series long mission so that we don't have to see them or see people mourning for their death.
ReplyDeleteLaurel is just a bad character all around and Sara as long as she is there we will have this fight over BC. They have been stringing us audience in this dance for two seasons. Even now they don't give a definite answer to the future of BC. Just drop the whole character and focus on characters like Diggle, Thea, Quentin and Merlyn.
If I have to choose I will choose Sara only if she is used sparingly as recurring in special episodes. Then the question remains what is Laurel's purpose?
hey If my dad got someone as smoakin as Felicity/Emily, would be cause for a fist bump.
ReplyDeleteLOL
ReplyDeleteI don't think Robbie will be playing a 20 year old. Daniel Panabaker's character is a bio engineering scientist. You don't become a scientist in a prestigious place like STAR labs at the age of 22. So most probably both Robbie and Daniel may be playing characters in late 20's.
ReplyDeleteFelicity of the show is so different from the pre New 52 version from the comics. I don't get the need to bring in Ed Raymond and linking her to Robbie Amell's character.
That will produce so much anger from audience may be more than HIMYM. Just string along Sara fans and end of series give the title to Laurel. The problem with this scenario is what is Laurel going to do in the next 8 years. If she does not become BC and is not a part of crime fighting team then people are going to resent her even more.
ReplyDeleteLaurel, it needs to follow the actual story somewhat and she needs to get those powers.
ReplyDeleteI am not a fan of Laurel so I won't fight with you on her becoming BC. I might not like it or is interested in seeing it on screen but my belief is she will become BC by end of this season.
ReplyDeleteMy question to you is do you really think she will get the Canary cry super power? They already used a gadget for Sara for the same thing. Won't it be a bit unbelievable if the power Laurel gets is the same as the gadget her sister had? I personally don't think they will give her meta human powers in this show. Sara might give her the gadget though.
Except that this question is asking who should BE Black Canary, so the argument 'Oliver gets with Black Canary' has no bearing on it whatsoever. It's like you're answering the question 'who should Oliver get with' instead of 'Who should be Black Canary'.
ReplyDeletethey could always make Ed Raymond Felicity's lost long father.
ReplyDeleteI don´t disagree but it´s the CW and the show will last for a couple more seasons and what to do with the character all these years and why wasting the potential to develop Laurel?
ReplyDeleteOh I do want Laurel to develop. I just want her to develop into her OWN hero, even her own version of the Canary, not replace Sara.
ReplyDeleteLaurel you get the vast majority of the fandom hates her (rightfully so at times) but It's not just because she's Black Canary in the comics that I want her to be it, it's because Katie Cassidy was great in Supernatural and pulled off being a badass and I think she could do it on Arrow incredibly well if given the script, and plot to back her up. That and seeing such a weak and poorly done character like Laurel transforming into a strong, interesting character like she is in the comics (and become one of the best martial artists on the planet- to the point she can take Green Arrow in fighting) would be immensely satisfying to watch for me. As much as I like Caity Lotz I just think there's more opportunity with Laurel learning to be better and stronger and become Black Canary than her maintaining the mantle (not to mention as many of you have pointed out the stress and guilt from killing she's built of over the years are slowly affecting and damaging her- and isn't Oliver she can't be the same hero kind of hero- although I don't believe she wants to be one). That being said Caity Lotz is fantastic and I would love if they keep her around, have her help train Laurel and find whatever destiny she has.
ReplyDeletethen she needs to be more like Dinah in the comics, not whatever the show is trying to make of Laurel.
ReplyDeleteI think its too late for Laurel to catch up with Oliver or Sara. Both of them have gone through 5 to 6 years of hell to be where they are right now. Even Roy, who has always been on the streets and fighting took 2 years on the show to earn his mask and he is just a sidekick. At this point even Thea can kick Laurel's ass and Laurel's almost 30. Under these scenarios to expect that suddenly Laurel will become a world class level martial artist in a year or two is impossible.
ReplyDeleteDevelop into what?
ReplyDeleteWell she does have basic self defence training and can take bouncers granted that's not much but it's something, plus she'll train with Ted Grant this season (who is Wildcat one of the toughest best DC fighters and trainer of many heroes) so she'll at least be pretty good by the season's end. Now combine that with training from Oliver and Sara and while I don't know if she'll be ready (and I think it'll definitely take more than a season and be at least a 2 season arc) I think she'll be quite tough (and if she gets the cry from the particle accelerator explosion and goes on a Batman like sojourn across the world to train with different masters, she'll be more than ready she'll be able to become Black Canary- although I think in the comics Grant's training was enough
ReplyDeleteLike I said, into her own hero. There are canon characters they can make Laurel into their version of, or they could do a new one.
ReplyDeleteAt most I would accept BOTH being Canary at the same time. My major, stated problem is killing Sara to promote Laurel.
she also has a job as DA. Neither Sara and Oliver had one.
ReplyDeleteI know looks isn't good criteria but to me Sara is so antipatic I'd be happy if I wouldn't have to watch her anymore. So yeah... And I also said Laurel good still become badass = good Canary.
ReplyDeleteLaurel downfall became apparent in season 1 when Felicity took her place on team Arrow the first half had more Laurel and Hood interaction but the second removed that and added Felicity who I love but made the problem worse.
ReplyDeleteI don't think we are going to see the real canary cry as they have said that they want to make Arrow more grounded this season and keep the powers for Flash. Besides, I am not impressed with the Ted Grant they have cast who looks more like a love interest than someone who is a serious martial artist. Also the actor is younger. If they were serious about Laurel's journey they should have cast an older actor and introduce a Ted Grant who has a lot of experience.
ReplyDeleteIf the producers were serious about Laurel, they should have started her journey after the Glades was destroyed, at the start of Season 2.
Roy is the worst though Coltons acting is cringe worthy sometimes it badddd.
ReplyDeleteI think Katie chemistry with Amell is good in interviews its even better than withFelicitys actor. The problem with the show is Oliver has treated Laurel like a jerk a lot in the past those wounds are still pretty apparent in their relationship , they love each other but the past stinks. They do seem like people who have known each other for a long time.
ReplyDeleteAn example is in flashbacks when Laurel is actually happy and smiles all the time and her so called chemistry with Oliver becomes better.
I agree with everything else making Laurel badass.
From what I've seen on the show it looks like she has more than "basic"
ReplyDeleteskills, but what matters is that you're right. JR Ramirez (who's gonna
play Ted Grant) has been training intensively from what we can see and
so has Katie. The reason why they've cast such a young actor might be
because he's gonna be her love interest, sure, but there's no doubt he's
gonna be a martial artist nor that he's going to train her.
And have to be learned. Oliver's, Sara's everyone's were shit in the beginning, and training to fight with guys like Ted Grant who have such skills and instincts a will allow her to learn.
ReplyDeleteI am talking about the actor who plays Wildcat having a regular status on the show Power and they start shooting sometime in September.
ReplyDeleteRight tell that to the season finale fight where she almost drowns, or earlier where Ivo almost shoots her. Or later when she almost dies falling off a building fighting Huntress.
ReplyDeleteYou can't be serious. Did you read the comics, the ones who tells us the origins of the characters, including how Sara used to be before the island? Sara has always been protayed has the trouble-maker, even her official biography on Arrow's official wiki tells us how bad a person she used to be. Laurel, the one who got to Law School to help people is less smart that the girl who used to mess with her school mates' boyfriends and got in a boat with her sister's boyfriend? Honestly...
ReplyDeleteI don't think we will see Ted Grant too much on the show. The guy cast as Ted Grant, J.R. Ramirez, got a series regular gig for some other summer show and is apparently in NY preparing for it. Besides, his role was a "potentially" recurring one.
ReplyDeleteFirst she's trained for 3-4 years. Second if you've read my other posts on this page I've noted that it'll take 2 plus years and encourage the belief that she should learn from as many people as possible. Even then learning from people like Ted Grant, Sara or Oliver gives her an advantage they don't have a more varied fighting style with more experienced trainers (since Oliver took Slade, Ted Grant knows half a dozen fighting styles and has some of the best instincts in boxing and Sara was trained in Wang chung and bo staff fighting by the league). Even if she's not trained by them she can still become very tough in her own right.
ReplyDeleteNot to mention Sara hardly ever uses the gadget and it almost feels like they changed their minds about it and didn't want it to be like one of her "trademarks", seeing as she didn't use it at all on the last, what, ten episodes, at least?
ReplyDeleteLaurel is less smart when it comes to getting into fights, 201, 217, 220...throws a punch gets her ass handed to her and needs a bailout...pretty much every time she's gotten into a fight with anyone that could fight back. Hell in 220 she shows up, hits the guy from behind and then drops the pipe when he turns around on her.
ReplyDeleteSo yeah, when it comes to being smart and having survival instincts she's a dumbass.
Oh well okay then. Actually depending on shooting he could still do both. Like if he show's up in the beginning and plays a bigger role in the later half (which I suspect since Palmer will be the major recurring player for the first ten episodes or so plus I suspect her training will continue into season 4).
ReplyDeleteA) Same thing with Sara and Oliver on the island, B) She didn't know about the extent of the mirakuru's effects and that helped Oliver from being horribly beaten.
ReplyDeleteMaybe she realized he was abnormally powerful and didn't have a chance? Was a bit stunned for a moment with that realization considering people usually get hurt when you hit the back of their head with a pipe with that force? She didn't know whether to run or stay for Oliver, I guess, but how do we know Sara would've been smarter all those times, anyway? She used to get beaten by her school mates even after the basic training, so I wouldn't say Sara has more aptitude or anything.
ReplyDeleteFemale lead only by name because her screen time is lower than some of the regular...
ReplyDeleteThat interview was TERRIBLE. Stephen looked so uncomfortable...
ReplyDeleteWhich still means that, yeah, she's still the female lead, technically, and people should just get over it and consider that maybe she's gonna have more screen time next season.
ReplyDeleteApparently WildCat shows up in episode 3. So there might be quite big pauses for the storyline between WildCat and Laurel. The problem might also be the locations.
ReplyDeleteLaurel fans have this idea that she was originally a part of it.
ReplyDeleteYeah that could be problematic.
ReplyDeleteI thin they did that to have her reach her lowest low and realize that not everything is about her and make her tougher emotionally. At least I hope that was the intention.
ReplyDeleteThe crossed arms and how he almost refused to look up. I really didn't know what to think.
ReplyDeleteI never said she is not female lead or she will not become BC. What I said was my opinion. I am not interested in the future of BC in this show. They have been teasing Laurel to become BC for two seasons. Instead of working towards that they butchered Laurel's character. While every other character grew in this show, they showed Laurel's character degrade. In the season 1 pilot she was this lawyer who worked pro bono cases to help provide justice to poor people. At the end of season to she is a recovering addict who killed a man (it was in self defense but we were never shown any remorse) and blackmailed her way into her job. I am just tired of this character.
ReplyDeleteWhat ever I wrote above is my wish to happen in this show which is what the poll question was about. I am not stupid enough to believe that they are going to write both Katie Cassidy and Caity Lotz from the show.
Who needs to get over it are the ones constantly bringing up "but she's the female lead/protagonist!!1!!!!' as a base for an argument.
ReplyDeleteThe EPs said that they are going to keep Arrow grounded to reality and Flash with powers in an SDCC interview. But like you said a canary cry will distinguish Laurel from Sara. The canary cry they showed in Smallville was a joke. If they do it I hope they do it better here. I still don't think they will give meta human powers to Laurel.
ReplyDeleteWhen they said that it was her island i wanted to throw stuff. I am sorry when we see in flashbacks what Sara and Oliver went through, losing their humanity bit by bit it just doesn't compare.
ReplyDeleteThey really cut Laurel off her knees by giving her that backstory with Oliver and propping her as love interest in season 1. Even with that back story if they had concentrated on her job of helping people instead of her feelings for Oliver and Tommy people would have admired her more. Its the love story that actually did more harm to her.
ReplyDeleteFelicity can make Laurels phone explode perfect distraction.
ReplyDeleteYou mean how the Arrow solved the cases for her?
ReplyDeleteThat must be it, I guess.... lol
ReplyDeleteI don't mind the Laurel character, but for a BC, it has to be Sara, as even tough Laurel is good with self defense, Sara's assassin level training/skills makes sense for the BC to have that Laurel shouldn't realistically have so unless Laurel goes off to study with the LoA for some reason, I think that BC should stay with Sara
ReplyDeletePart of the reason why I hate Sara: she was introduced to us as the badass, we never saw her true journey. She started out as this super powerfull, all knowing, all capable Mary Sue.
ReplyDeleteBut suddenly we`re confronted with a weak character that is supposed to have her heroic evolution before her they all go nuts.
Sheesh, you want your Mary Sue that knows everything by default? Fine, you already have Felicity.
And last but not least: it would mean that we would be served with MORE of Cailty Lotz` acting. Something I seriously don't think I could survive.
I don't think Felicity would ever be the Black Canary. If anything she might end up like Chloe on Smallville which is perfectly fine with me since Chloe was a badass in the last few seasons of Smallville
ReplyDeleteThe CW really needs to get a Birds of prey spin-off in the works for the 2015 - 2016 TV season.
ReplyDeleteI'd have Lyla ( Audrey Marie Anderson ) Michaels aka Harbinger under the watchful eye of Amanda (Cynthia Addai-Robinson ) Waller aka Mockingbird head up the newest unit of A.R.G.U.S., the "Birds of Prey" division.
The team would consist of Dinah 'Laurel' Lance aka the ( Black ) Canary, Sara Lance aka Oracle ( after suffering a attack that left her in coma and then a wheelchair we learn along with fighting skills she was taught everything one could know about computers, making her felicity's equal in this department ), Helena Bertinelli aka Huntress, and Nyssa al Ghul.
The team would be aided by McKenna Hall now the Captain of her precinct in { New } Gotham City or Coast City and their main foe would be the newly escaped Slade Wilson aka Deathstroke and his right hand women Isabel, Shado, ( Isabel had the Mirakuru in her system at the time of her death so she is resurrected and Shado is a clone of Slade's love as he can't be apart from her any longer ) and Harley Quinn played Sarah Michelle Gellar.
I don't think they are very eager for another Birds Of Prey series. The way the first one bombed.
ReplyDeleteMuch rather see a Suicide Squad one with Waller, Deathstroke, Deadshot, Bronze Tiger and Clock King.
ReplyDeleteI don't care enough for it to bother me. I just hope they won't make him prominent enough on the show.
ReplyDeleteI think what's funny is how people say Laurel would kick Felicity's butt. Physically? Yes. But Felicity could destroy Laurel in the safety of her bedroom with her trusty tablet. So while Laurel may win the battle (if there ever is one), Felicity would win the war.
ReplyDeleteWho would win in a fight? In the end, it would be Felicity.
*shrugs*
Oh yeah, Sara all the way! I can only take her in small doses, but she is far better than the alternative! I think it's time the show drop the least appealing of characters, a Lance needs to go—and I don't mean Sara. Last I checked the show was about Arrow, not the Lance family.
ReplyDeleteAlso because I don't believe any of the actresses are strong enough to carry a show. :/
ReplyDeleteand Ronnie her step brother.
ReplyDeleteShe doesn´t have to die. She could retire, if this is a proper term for this.
ReplyDeleteOr to ask it another way, can you buy Laurel being KC after having seen Caity Lotz do it as Sara?
ReplyDeleteA show with Katie Cassidy, Caity Lotz and Jessica DeGouw as leads. No thanks. None of these actresses has the capability to carry a show.
ReplyDeleteNot KC its BC lol
ReplyDeleteWhoops!
ReplyDeleteFixed it, thanks.
I think you are still misunderstanding the poll here. The poll is not about who should Oliver Queen/GA end up with on the show Laurel, Sara or Felicity. The poll us about who should be BC in this particular show.
ReplyDeletePeople have different opinions about this.
1. Some want Sara to die and Laurel to become BC asap
2. Some want Laurel to die and Sara to remain BC till the end of the show
3. Some want Laurel to become BC but Sara not to die (both being different canaries or Sara getting another moniker)
4. Some want Sara to continue being BC and Laurel to be another super hero
5. Some want Sara to continue being BC till the series end and Laurel to become BC by the series finale.
This is what the poll is about not whom Green Arrow ends up with. Also Felicity and Sara's relationship with Arrow has nothing to do with this poll. Your first post is only about Green Arrow's romance not about who should be BC in this show.
If people never saw Laurel being BC, how can they compare it to what Caity Lotz has done?
ReplyDeleteGood for Felicity fans to bring her on when she is not even one of the options.
ReplyDeleteAgreed. But Roy is the side kick where as Sara as BC is on par with Oliver's Arrow in experience and training. I would say she has an edge on Oliver. So we expect BC to be a partner with Arrow not a side kick. Laurel is a horribly written character whom even if becomes BC will never be on par with Sara and Oliver's experience and fighting skills. Even Diggle has more experience than Laurel. Laurel's BC will be another side kick like Roy not a partner.
ReplyDeleteAnother Felicity father theory. I like it. But I want her father to be a bad ass villain. Ed Raymond was a good guy. But Robbie Amell and EBR as step siblings will be fun to watch.
ReplyDeleteThis^^^^ She needs to carry a taser with her. Also I would like to see her poke some one's eye and run away from the place of danger.
ReplyDeleteI want Thea to become CEO of Queen Industries. She already has business sense with her running verdant. Now with Malcolm's training and later with the help of Walter I want her to run QC.
ReplyDeleteFelicity can run Applied sciences dept with Ray Palmer (if he continues after this season) and make cool toys and arrows for Oliver and co. to play with.
Never. Felicity being BC just does not make any sense. She needs to remain the resident hacker and moral compass for Team Arrow. I would like her to get a higher level job at the applied sciences dept in QC and make cool gadgets and toys for Oliver and co.
ReplyDeleteI am not usually opinionated toward such matters. But i wouldn't complain if Laurel just stopped being in Arrow
ReplyDeleteI know a lot of people online like Sara but I see her just as a foreshadowing to Laurel later becoming the character just as Yao Fei was a foreshadowing to Oliver becoming Green Arrow which he hasn't been called yet. This is how the people behind the show refer to these characters.
ReplyDeleteIt was actually a Laurel fan saying she could kick Felicity's ass. Read all comments before trying to be condescending.
ReplyDeleteYou're right about that but there was also the episode where some guys broke into her place and she took them all down before she was tazed. She also disarmed one of those hood guys in season 2 first episode.
ReplyDeleteNeither are great choices, but I would like to see Laurel as BC if Katie Cassidy can bring some of the energy she had when she played Ruby on Supernatural.
ReplyDeleteThere is only one real Black Canary - Dinah Laurel Lance!
ReplyDeleteSara is The Canary and not Black Canary, she has never been referenced as such nor she should be. She is nothing like comic Black Canary while Laurel, even though her character is quite damaged by poor writing, shares a lot of traits with her comic book counterpart.
ReplyDeleteShe's Black Canary and this argument is old and boring. Marc himself already confirmed it. Goeff Johns calls BOTH Caity and Katie Black Canary, so move on.
ReplyDeleteIf it was her middle name why wasn't it on her tombstone? The name doesn't matter except to the writers though. I'll just let the writers do what they want. If some don't like it they don't have to watch if it bothers them that much. But probably most of you will watch the show regardless of who the Canary is because you like the show and they will have no reason to change things.
ReplyDeleteApparently people can't have opinions now a days... smh. Ever heard of a write-in?
ReplyDeleteI wouldn't mind it if Felicity branched out and created her own start-up tech company! That would actually be quite empowering for Felicity
ReplyDeleteThat would have been the best way to turn her into something that could become the BC. But they missed the boat on it.
ReplyDeleteShe stayed in the building to get files that would HELP the people who were about to suffer the most due to the earthquake. Risking your life for other people sounds pretty heroic, and she does that instinctively.
ReplyDeleteDinah Laurel Lance.
ReplyDeleteSara, that's not even a question. Lol I'm sorry. She's too good. Laurel doesn't have to die (personal preference aside) But some fans had a theory that Laurel would die, which would cause Sara to step up and be BC. I thought that was a helluva theory when I first heard it. Now that would be a nice twist. As for Laurel, in the BEGINNING of season 1,I was hyped, I was alll okayyy let's see where this goes. Then what happened....I saw wheree it went. = / (mega fFacepalm).
ReplyDeleteNOPE!! As much as I love Felicity, definitely not...Sara all the way, hands down. I wouldn't mind if Felicity kept training with Diggle though, I like those scenes with them. Her cute little punches. Hahahaha I'd like to see juct once, throw a punch correctly and hit a guy. Oliver would be all, "where the hell did that come from?" And she'd say, "Diggle taught me some stuff." LOL That's so her.
ReplyDeleteExactly. Totally agree.
ReplyDeleteExactly. And I'm still mad we never saw that scene with her near the motorcycle. I really wanted to know what that was about. Was she on the bike with Sara or Oliver? (I'm hoping Sara) that would've been awesome. I hope they show it on the DVD deleted scenes. = p
ReplyDeleteWell too bad that storyline was dropped in season 2 and make Laurel look pretty bad. We were told how much she cares for the underprivileged people and fights for them. But none of that was shown in season 2. And what those files aren't save on computers in the 21st century?
ReplyDeleteLol yeah. I think there are some thoughts that Felicity's mom isn't what she seems to be on first glance, because of all of the secrecy surrounding her and why they didn't release her name yet. There were some rumors that the new name is Stephanie, since it was on the IMDB site and AK quickly said that info is wrong.
ReplyDeleteI also think as long as the identity of Felicity's parents (especially her fathers) stays a mystery we will get the craziest theories surrounding her parents.
I think that will happen down the road in few seasons . Right now she needs a job that will suit her brilliance. A genius like her working as EA is so sad.
ReplyDeleteI agree that Laurel COULD become a very interesting "version" of BC but the chick who plays Sara Lance at least to me is one of the worst actress' I've ever seen on a mainstream tv show.
ReplyDeleteProblem is they deicded to rip off the dark knigt Triology when beginning this show and basically made her CW's version of Rachel Dawes. They should have made Laurel BC from the beginning.
this show has single handed destroyed two of the best female characters in Green Arrow and maybe DC's universe in Shado and Black Canary.
So in conclusion Laurel could become a very interesting version of Black Canary but at this point I don't have much hope.
Sarah Michelle Gellar is only 37. A number of older male actors have played superheroes on the big screen.
ReplyDeleteThis show hasn't ripped off the dark knight. Just because she's a lawyer, that doesn't make her Rachel. The only things in common she even has are being a lawyer and being Oliver's love interest (which she isn't even in season 3). Besides that their character arcs are nothing alike.
ReplyDeleteLet me join you in your minority opinion, because it definitely has to be Laurel. Sara is the prototype or the inspiration, same way Oliver wasn't the first to wear the green hood and Slade wasn't the first in the Deathstroke getup and in the comics, Laurel was anyway the second Black Canary, so that hasn't changed. I like Sara, but we're not seeing an origin story with her, she came into the show already a badass, which is great, but it's not much of a journey. Yes she can become more of a hero than an antihero/assassin and that can be her journey, I'm not saying I want or think Sara needs to die in order for Laurel to take up the mantel. But with Laurel we're going to get to see her become a hero and frankly, her personality fits that definition a lot more than Sara.
ReplyDeleteAnd considering Katie Cassidy is a regular while Caity Lotz is a guest actress, the training Katie is doing and Ted Grant showing up... I think we're going to get our wish.
She's too old to play Harley Quinn (unless they do a original Birds of Pray type show but they wouldn't). An actress in her late 20's to 30's would be better. Gellar wouldn probably be very good though. True, but most males actors who do that are either hired to play a character in their 40's (Ben Affleck as Batman), or look younger and are in great physical shape (the Rock potentially as Shazam or Black Adam), or have had the role for a long time and made it their own (Hugh Jackson, RDJ). Most when hired and start playing the character are under 35. Even then DeGouw, Lotz and Cassidy wouldn't be very good at carrying the show.
ReplyDeleteOne thing is having an opinion that is relevant to the topic, another thing is changing the subject to express an opinion.
ReplyDeleteThe topic is about Black Canary, Sara and Laurel.
there was a comment bellow about L being able to kill or hurt Felicity badly.
ReplyDeleteShe is bio engineer at a prestigious lab, I don't see this happening at 22. She more than likely has a masters so more than likely she is in her late 20s
ReplyDeleteFrom what I can observe, generally, people only bring up the fact that Laurel is the female lead when Felicity stans say Felicity is the female lead. Most of the times people saying Laurel is the protagonist are only trying to correct or remind people that, like I said, technically, Katie still plays the lead. Do I think that the fact that Katie plays the lead is a good base for an argument? No.
ReplyDeleteAnd Oliver has never been referenced as Green Arrow, just Arrow... doesn't really mean shit.
ReplyDeleteAltruism is all well and good when the consequences to yourself are proportionate to the help you're giving other people. No one with even the barest self-preservation instinct would majorly risk their lives to "save" papers. A costumed crimefighter who doesn't get the hell out of Dodge when a building is about to collapse around her? Doesn't sound too believable to me.
ReplyDeleteThere's that deleted scene of Felicity and Sara holding hands, too... ugh, we are being cheated out of our Smoaking Canary female version of bromance! (Sis-mance?)
ReplyDeleteIt isn't because KC can't be Black Canary as an actress, but I really don't think Laurel could ever win fans over as Black Canary! She is really too hard to believe in that role and we already have the widely loved Sara as the Canary and hopefully on a journey to being the Black Canary. Laurel needs to either focus on saving the world as a lawyer and through charity work...or have her just go dark! I really liked this idea last year when she had all the pent up animosity towards the Arrow and possibly the Canary, but then of course she suddenly does a 180 and loves the Arrow when she finds out it's Ollie. Such a wasted awesome storyline for Laurel.
ReplyDeleteShe doesn't have to die. They already had her choose The League over staying in Starling with Team Arrow, yes I know she'll be coming back, but I don't think it will be permanent, I believe I read that she was back for a limited number of episodes, and that's Laurel's opening to become something more and finally help the city in a real capacity.
ReplyDeleteLiterally EVERY superhero would stay in a collapsing building if it meant helping people. Like, in the same episode, Oliver rushed into the same building to save Laurel. Sara rushed into a burning building to save someone too. It's what they do.
ReplyDeleteMaybe Felicity can recover the files from her magical-can-do-anything-tablet?
ReplyDeleteThere's a big difference between saving someone's life and saving a bunch of files, no matter how important they are.
ReplyDeleteYou nailed the difference between the two characters perfectly. About our wish...From your lips to god´s ear. Or at least Marc Guggenheim´s ;-)
ReplyDeleteHonestly, I feel like the 'Sara' episode will be more about Sara deciding she wants to be Sara again than anything. Her arc this season will probablly be about wanting to be normal again. And Laurel, she'll want the opposite. Which will work out perfectly for each-other. Laurel gets to become Black Canary, and Sara gets to be Sara again.
ReplyDeleteI wouldn't mind that, Sara has been through hell the last 6 years and basically forced to become what everyone else wanted her to be (Ivo, the League of Assassins), but I do feel like her League connection could prove important and I don't really see them letting her go off to live her life any time soon...
ReplyDeleteAmen :)
ReplyDeleteThis storyline is probably starting at the end of episode 3, given the deleted twitter picture, I can't freaking wait.
Yup, i remember that deleted scene too. IDK. Maybe it'll be in the deleted scenes too. And Nooooo on that name. lol Let's stick with girl-power. Until we find something better.lol....But their ship name is SmoakinCanary. Which i actually like.
ReplyDeleteWell, with Ra's being the big bad, once he's been dealt with, Sara can be free. Which would line up pretty well. Sara ends her career as Canary in the finale. Laurel takes up and is Black Canary moving forward, having spent the season training and preparing for it.
ReplyDeleteI hope by "dealt with" you don't mean dead, because it's freaking Ra's al Ghul, I sincerely hope they're not going to kill him off (not that they've killed off any of the big bads so far) but I'd be ok with that. I definitely don't think Sara needs to die for Laurel to become Black Canary, so this is one way to do it.
ReplyDeleteSara always!!! Is that even a question? lol
ReplyDeleteExactly! I fast forward her scenes as it is, to have to do so ANOTHER few more years ... ? No. Please no. Just retire the character in any way possible.
ReplyDeleteI can't help but be amused that even a poll about who should be black canary has arrow fans inserting discussions about Felicity Smoak into it. I love it.
ReplyDeleteIt seems female characters are often damaged this way, when shows frame them as love interests first and actual people second. *sigh* Will they never learn?
ReplyDeleteI might not like her but I do think Laurel is the female lead. Even with her being missing from some episodes last season the show worked on her character the most after Oliver. Granted it was not done well. But they gave her a season long arc unlike Diggle, Felicity or Thea. So I agree she is the female lead. But that does not change the fact that she is a very badly written character and the dance of whether she will be BC or not is getting old.
ReplyDeleteI think the question should be will CW shows never learn? Even in season 3 they are promoting the show by highlighting the romance aspects of the show when Arrow is not about romance at all. Its not just about Oliver's love life. This season there is a triangle between Oliver/Ray/Felicity , a triangle between Roy/Thea/Roy's new LI and then there is Laurel/her new LI. Who cares about triangles and angst. Just a story with good beginning, middle and end and kick some butt during the process.
ReplyDeleteActually I found laurels reaction in S2 more natural then her beeing overly happy about Oliver returning from the dead in S1. Yeah her road wa a bit bumpy executed, but made totally send to me. I missed Wiggle last season and I hope Felicty is also getting a better story this season than only focussing on her love life.
ReplyDeleteWe have to agree to disagree about Laurel :) Both in season 1 and season 2 I am unable to connect with this character. On paper if anybody wrote the same story of the show Arrow and I was reading it, I will root for Laurel. She is the most innocent and emotionally wronged person in the show. But watching Laurel on the show I can't scrape an ounce of sympathy for the character. Don't know if it is the acting, dialogues or screen play the character comes across as rude to me when I should feel enraged or sad on her behalf.
ReplyDeleteSeason 1 Laurel was abrasive towards Oliver and her mother Dinah, rightfully so but the character lacked a vulnerability and ended looking bitchy in my eyes. Actress completely failed to express conflicted feelings of Laurel instead almost came off as bipolar.
Season 2 was a complete mess imo. The melodrama ramped up compared to season 1. The boat analogy and apology to Sara, I know you in my bones and like my name to Oliver...*eugh* Then came the blackmail and killing that cop without any remorse. Why should I root for this character?
She is the lead actress and she has got more dedicated storylines other than Oliver in this show but that does not make her a superior to any other characters on the show. If a character is not able to connect with majority portion of audience after two seasons of character development then its just a shitty character lead or no lead.
I suppose it will be Laurel but they mishandled her character so much that no one is going to accept it.
ReplyDeleteOh actually we agree. While I Don't find her that awful I Don't feel any connection to her either. But as you, I find the story's better written than executed. I just try to see the best also in the things I can not connect to - and it's one of my favorite shows at the moment. her storyline in S2 made total sense to me, even if I could not be sympathetic towards her.
ReplyDeleteLaurel.
ReplyDeleteBut that doesn't mean I want her to suddenly become it overnight. I want to see her training and have a build-up to it over Season 3 and into (if there is one, hopefully) Season 4.
Sara Lance obviously! Shouldn't even have to think about it!
ReplyDelete
