Vince Vaughn is in talks to play the central antagonist (not necessarily the villain or murderer – this is a mystery-based series after all) on the second season of HBO's “True Detective,” while Elisabeth Moss (“Mad Men”) is being eyed for the female lead and Michelle Forbes (“The Killing”) is in contention for a key role on the show, TheWrap has learned.
According to a breakdown obtained by TheWrap, the second season of “True Detective” will follow the death of Ben Caspar, the corrupt city manager of a fictional California city who's found brutally murdered amid a potentially groundbreaking transportation deal that would forever change freeway gridlock in the state. Three law enforcement officers from different cities and branches of the government are tasked with finding out who did it. They soon discover their investigation has much broader and darker implications than they initially thought.
Caspar's 52-year-old corpse is found on a lonely stretch of Pacific Coast Highway near Big Sur — his eye burned out, genitals cut off and satanic symbols etched on his chest. It turns out he had a penchant for rough sex and may have been involved in the occult.
Vaughn is in talks to play Frank Semyon, a former thug-turned-businessman who's working with a local mayor and his political cohorts to spearhead the construction of a high-speed railway system that links Southern California to Northern California in order to reap financial gains from federal grants and land purchases.
Moss, who recently played a small-town cop in the similarly themed, “Top of the Lake,” is being eyed to play Ani Bezzerides, a tough, no-nonsense Monterey sheriff whose troubled upbringing has driven her to gambling and alcohol. She reports to Sheriff James O'Neil and Deputy Sheriff Marla Simenon, and her partner, Elvis Ilinca, may have a crush on her. Ani also has both a hippie-type father who was absent when she was growing up, as well as a younger sister who isn't afraid to show off her body. She's also looking into the disappearance of a former classmate's sister.
Farrell is nearing a deal to play Ray Velcoro, who has been damaged by years of turmoil in both his personal and professional lives. A barely functioning coke-head with anger issues, he's on Frank's payroll and is battling his ex-wife for custody of their only son, Chad.
Kitsch is angling for the role of Paul Woodrugh, a handsome, 28-year-old military veteran who has seen his own share of violence and destruction. He's a motorcycle California Highway Patrol officer who's put on leave after soliciting oral sex from a beautiful girl he pulls over for drunk driving. He reports to Commander Floyd Heschmeyer and has a Latino girlfriend he breaks up with when he's assigned to the Caspar investigation.
Forbes, who starred on the first season of “The Killing,” has been rumored for a part on “True Detective,” and it's possible she could play either Farrell's ex-wife (a survivor of sexual assault) or Vaughn's charming but mercurial wife.
TheWrap previously reported that the second season of “True Detective” would feature three leads — two men and one woman — while series creator Nic Pizzolatto has said there will be four leads. While the three investigators are clearly the leads, it's understandable why Pizzolatto often referred to the season's primary antagonist as a fourth lead — he was writing the role with movie star Vaughn in mind, which explains the discrepancy in semantics.

This sounds awesome.
ReplyDeleteDon't like either of them. Pitty.
ReplyDeleteWow awesome news!!!
ReplyDeleteI know some people are like WTF at Vince but believe it or not there was a time when he was considered someone with a decent future ahead of him and not just bad comedies so I could see this working out. Mostly excited to see Elizabeth and Michelle. The plot sounds great.
ReplyDeleteThis is great news indeed!
ReplyDeleteAll of the actors mentioned are great when doing well-written dramas and if the synopses are any indication they could excel in their roles...
Looking forward to Season 2 to see if it can live up to the incredible first season!
So true.
ReplyDeleteI recall when he was considered a young actor to watch after Swingers.
Michell Forbes: Wahoo!
ReplyDeleteVince Vaughn: ...Ok, I disliked it when MM was announced. I'm willing to accept him as a possibility.
Meh. Everything about it seems a little bland. Hopefully I'm wrong, but so far I'm sort of disappointed. I wish season 2 would continue with Rust and Marty.
ReplyDeleteFunny all these people trashing Vince Vaughn. He's done a lot of shit movies lately, but dude can act. He's got some great films, and a few great performances under his belt. Not many people expected to see McConaughey where he's at a year ago, but Dallas Buyers Club and TD came along and gave him the right material. This cast sounds incredible to me.
ReplyDeleteOpps! Sorry. I just submitted this, not seeing it on my feed!
ReplyDeleteGreat news would love that cast!
Michelle Forbes is FANTASTIC in Battlestar Galactica and True Blood (although I think they went a little too far with showing too much of the violent orgy stuff, but that's not her fault)
ReplyDeleteShe tends to play antagonists a lot of times, only once have I seen her play a protagonist (Alias) and once a kind of non important character (LOST), but I'm most curious as to how her character will play out on Orphan Black (can't really tell who's side she's on), interested to see what she's like in The Returned...If they are following suit with the first season at all, then her role may be minimal, but I'm hoping there is something disturbing about her character, simply because she does it so well, but it would be a shocker if she was a just a 'good' Sumatran with no malicious intent!
I don't like Vaughn, but this could be a role of a life time for him. To me he seems to be the guy that gets type-cast and often plays his typical persona...I hope very much we see something more serious and dark from him here...
Watch the movie Clay Pigeons to see that Vaughn can in fact act. This season sounds interesting as it is a different mystery than the one from season 1. This could give Vaughn, Farrell, and Kitsch the career boost they need.
ReplyDeleteFarrell needs a career boost? I thought he was already a very respected actor...
ReplyDeleteI haven't seen her in Battlestar Galactica or True Blood, so I'll just have to take your word on that.
ReplyDeleteI don't remember Forbes on Lost... Time to go look that role up! ... Ah, she was a rep for Oceanic. I remember the character, but not her in the role. Guess she wasn't memorable there.
You bring up a valid point with Vaughn being typecast, though I've always assumed that to be of his own volition. Is he capable of being a serious actor, and being genuinely good with dark material? I sincerely doubt it, but if he does get cast on True Detective, then he damn well better prove me wrong.
Michelle Forbes and Elizabeth Moss, on the other hand, while they've never wowed me, I do consider them good actresses, and I know that they're capable of something strong when given the right writing and directing. Vaughn is going to have to do something great if he wants to be anything but that guy who does comedies that nobody likes.
My favorite role of Forbes was on Durham County.
ReplyDeletet had that dark, moody feel of Nordic Noir like Forbrydelsen/ The Killing. You should check it out, I think you would like it. I
It was a Crime Drama serial on Canadian premium cable (I forget the channel) that lasted for three years. It did well in the Canadian TV award shows I know... Each season is a different case and she was in the second season.
Vince Vaughn? Really? Please tell me that's joke!!!
ReplyDeleteOh! I have never heard of this! It DOES sound like something I would like! Thanks :)
ReplyDeleteThose are two really strong (and violent) roles of hers, but with Admiral Cain, given her past, it's slightly more forgiving, but her Maryanne Forester role is true pious! XD
ReplyDeleteI agree about VV, that it could turn out to be that he just can't do that role, but there are so many times when comedy actors end up impressing me (in fact I'm hoping for the same thing with Ray Ramano, who's been cast in Scorsese/Winter/Jagger untitled 1970's Rock'N Roll drama) I guess only time will tell, right?
Well he really hasn't had the star power that studios were hoping to make him back in the early 2000's. He mostly does indie or smaller budget movies. Plus I really haven't seen him in anything big for awhile where he has a starring role. This role would be a lead and maybe give him a bit of a career renaissance.
ReplyDeleteI'm totally banking on Romano being great in that Scorsese drama. So far he's been good when playing with drama.
ReplyDeleteYa, I haven't seen him play drama yet, but I know a lot of people feel he's great on Parenthood.
ReplyDeleteThat's exactly what I've heard. I've seen some snippets of Men of a Certain Age, and he seemed pretty good there.
ReplyDeleteEvery good show casts Michelle Forbes sooner or later. It's a law or something.
ReplyDeleteVaughn has damn good work in drama before. Watch Return to Paradise and Clay Pigeons. He just hasn't done it in a long time and keeps doing stupid comedies. He was even pretty good as a bad guy in Domestic Disturbance(movie is crappy though).
