“THE ORIGINALS”

Mondays (8:00-9:00pm ET) on The CW

The first season of THE ORIGINALS brought the most formidable creature on earth, the Original vampire-werewolf hybrid Klaus Mikaelson (Joseph Morgan), back to his former home – the vibrant and supernaturally charged city of New Orleans. When he arrived, his siblings Elijah (Daniel Gillies) and Rebekah (Claire Holt) not far behind, he was stunned to learn that werewolf Hayley Marshall (Phoebe Tonkin) was pregnant with his child. Though Elijah hoped that the news of a baby might help rebuild their fractured family, other forces threatened to destroy it further: namely, Marcel Gerard (Charles Michael Davis), Klaus’ beloved vampire protégé, whom the Originals thought to be long dead, and a dark secret that Marcel and Rebekah held for a century. The Originals and Hayley soon found themselves caught in a bloody war between vampires and witches, the stakes raised by a vengeful young witch, Davina (Danielle Campbell), and by Klaus’ surprising connection to Cami (Leah Pipes), a student with a painful past. Meanwhile, Hayley helped her exiled werewolf family return to the French Quarter, unaware that a ruthless pack of wolves was already lurking in the city, waiting to stage a violent coup on the vampires. As the first season came to a close, the werewolves decimated the vampire community, while the witches made a horrific assassination attempt against Klaus and Hayley’s newborn daughter.

Season two finds our heroes adjusting to a new status quo, with the newly empowered werewolves controlling the city and a myriad of unknown threats lurking. Though Klaus and Hayley have vowed to scorch the earth in order to make New Orleans a safe home for their daughter, Hope, they also have inner demons to battle. As she adjusts to life as a hybrid, Hayley experiences crippling rage and depression after saying goodbye to her daughter, and Klaus – who needs his strength now more than ever – finds himself regularly weakened as the werewolves use the moonlight rings forged in his blood. Elijah, finding himself isolated from his troubled family, sets out to destroy Francesca (guest star Peta Sergeant) and her traitorous werewolves, connecting with Marcel and his renewed vampire community in the process. Despite the dangerous climate of the city, Cami recommits to her studies and to pursuing the life she wanted before she met Klaus – but the werewolves in the Quarter aren’t the only enemies preventing New Orleans from any semblance of peace.

Unbeknownst to Klaus and Elijah, their ruthlessly devious parents have returned from the dead. Though their father, Mikael (guest star Sebastian Roché), is controlled by Davina’s magic, he remains ever-intent on killing Klaus – even if he has to go through Davina to do it. Elsewhere, their mother, Esther (guest star Alice Evans), inhabiting the body of a teenage witch, is fueled by a consuming and twisted love for her children as she devises a disturbing plan to reunite her fractured family – a plan that involves untold torment not only for the Original siblings, but for any and all of their loved ones.

  1. Thanks for this. I am so excited for season 2! Here's to hoping The Originals can continue being as great as it has been and learn from the mistakes of TVD! :)

  2. My point was where did the 'official press release come from ( link ) ?
I've only seen a tweet from someone connected to the show and a fan site that has the last paragraph added on but it isn't in the tweet.
What is the link to where the official press release came from ?

  3. I thought esther wanted to destroy her children coz they were an abomination and now she wants to reunite them?

  4. They can try as long and hard as they'd like but Klaus will never, ever, ever be a hero.

  5. Tell me whenever Rebekah is back because those will be the only episodes I watch of this show, this is still one of my biggest disappointment from last season.

    ReplyDelete
  6. She won't be coming back. Claire didn't want to do the show anymore and already got a new acting job - she'll be on Aquarius. There's some speculation that she wanted to move back to LA and live there permanently (and that is where Aquarius is shooting) and no longer wanted to live in Atlanta (where TVD & TO shoots).

  7. If Angelus can become hero Angel so can Klaus.

    ReplyDelete
  8. I have this problem with TVD as well. Damon is certainly not a hero and I hate how it's presented like he, Stefan & Elena are. I think TVD & TO lacks actual heroes - it's about trying to survive and protect the people they care about and nobody cares if a bunch of innocent people wind up dead.

    ReplyDelete
  9. She would only be guest starring in couple of episodes at most.

    ReplyDelete
  10. If Hayley really wanted to be with her daughter, why not just leave and go be with her? There's no reason for her to stay in NOLA and they could have easily told people she was dead. Klaus I can sort of see staying - because Mikael will follow him wherever he goes or whatever.

I just can't get on-board with the premise that Hayley is only willing to live in NOLA even if it means that she won't be a part of her child's life when she could have just left in the season finale with Rebekah and the baby.

  11. That was totally different. Angel & Spike both started off as murderous vampires, but Angel was very different after he was cursed with a soul and decided to do good and try and make amends. Spike also got his soul back and had an actual redemption story.

There's nothing like that in TVD mythology - vampires on this show are not soulless creatures.

    ReplyDelete
  12. Angelus never turned into a hero.
They gave him a soul through magic and created a whole different person.

Angelus continued to be evil (as displayed in season 4), Angel was a being created the day the gipsies cursed him.

Klaus has not even showed remorse for ANYTHING up until this point, he will never be a hero...

  13. None of them are heroes but they are their show's protagonists. In any case, this is just splitting hairs.

    ReplyDelete
  14. They are the protagonist of the show, but that does no in any way make them heroes - there are no heroes on The Originals at all. Everyone has an agenda and is out for themselves.

    ReplyDelete
  15. But there's a huge difference, in BtVS a vampire is not the person they were but a demon with no conscience, in TVD vampires are still inherently themselves. Angelus is Angel without a soul. Klaus became a vampire and chose to act only on his negative emotions. So while I agree Klaus can choose to grow and maybe make some personal progress, he and Angel will NEVER be comparable. At all. And Klaus could NEVER believably go through enough character growth in a few years on a TV show to make up over over 1,000 years of having a blackened heart and murdering thousands of people because he felt like it, or was throwing a hissy fit.

    ReplyDelete
  16. And the central characters of any given program are often characterized as such whether or not they are literally heroes. Like I said, splitting hairs.

    ReplyDelete
  17. he's a darker hero now though but a hero

    ReplyDelete
  18. klaus is more spike than angel

    ReplyDelete
  19. The protagonist is the main character and the antagonist is the character that opposes them. Often times the protagonist can be a hero (for example - Buffy) but not always. It is possible for the protagonist to be a villain and for the antagonist to be a hero (an example of this would be a show like Dexter - he's the protagonist of the show but he's in no way a hero - he's a serial killer).

Take Star Wars for example - Anakin/Darth Vader is the central character of the 6 movies (and George Lukas has said the series is really about him) but he is a villain - not a hero.

With TVD & TO I think all the characters pretty much fit into the villain category - and it's just a matter of conflicting agendas/interests.

    ReplyDelete
  20. At least Stefan acknowledges they're no better than Klaus and tries to be a good person.

    ReplyDelete
  21. He did say that once, but he also spent a great deal of time plotting to kill Klaus and believing that he and Damon are the "good guys" and that Klaus is the villain they need to kill because Klaus' agenda does match Stefan & Damon's agenda (in regards to Elena mostly).

    ReplyDelete
  22. Klaus is either a very dark anti-hero or anti-villain (wanting to make the city safe for hope is a noble goal however villainous are his methods). Not a hero.

    ReplyDelete
  23. Klaus has never really had an evil agenda though (and that's true of most of the characters). On TVD he just wanted to break the curse his mother had put on him and create other hybrids so he wouldn't be alone - it wasn't some evil scheme or anything.

    ReplyDelete
  24. Well he's never really said they're the good guys. Unlike Damon (who had actually uttered the phrase) He's pretty clear that he doesn't view himself in a positive light and hates himself a great deal because of what he's done.

    ReplyDelete
  25. It's simple actually.
Destroying them was TVD writers at work
    and
Reuniting the family is the Originals writers

    ReplyDelete
  26. This is actually pointing out that the villain can be the hero. Dexter, the mass murderer, the protagonist, is the guy on the show that the viewer roots for. He's the guy people want to see succeed. He's perceived as "the hero" even though his actions aren't necessarily heroic.

Anakin Skywalker was a boy who later became a villain. As Anakin, he was a hero, and acted accordingly, through his trilogy all the way up through 2.5 films.

    ReplyDelete
  27. True, but it's his methods that are generally pretty villainous. That being said forcing Stefan to join him on his hybrid quest was pretty cold.

    ReplyDelete
  28. I know all of this, thanks anyway, all I have is a little hope that she appears in a couple episodes even if it's only for 30 seconds.
I'll give a chance to Aquarius just for her, Im not one of those fans that hates on an actor for wanting to do and try new stuff. Good for her.

    ReplyDelete
  29. As simple as Phoebe Tonkin being under contract and the producers wanting to do something with the character.
Sometimes you have to give up on trying to make sense out of the decisions the character makes, because it was made by a writer.

    ReplyDelete
  30. She'll be shown early on in the season (they filmed her part with the baby while she shot the stuff for the season finale).

    ReplyDelete
  31. I think we must have different definitions of the word hero because in way would I ever see a character like Dexter Morgan or Damon Salvatore to be a hero.

    ReplyDelete
  32. It would be suspicious if Hayley were to have disappeared if no one saw her dead body. In fact the only people who knew that she died would've been Klaus, Elijah and the three witches. I don't think anyone would have believed Klaus and Elijah saying that Hayley died without seeing the body first. In addition if anyone saw Hayley alive and kicking somewhere that might lead Klaus's enemies to their baby. The only thing for Hayley to do really was stay in New Orleans and draw attention away from her baby.

    ReplyDelete
  33. Also what about Spike? He didn't have a soul towards the end of Buffy but he still chose to help her out. (The chip doesn't count because even when it was removed Spike chose to help Buffy.)

    ReplyDelete
  34. Then they could have said she was upset about the baby dying and had decided to leave town.

    ReplyDelete
  35. oK now Esther bring on you witch power, i wanna see that.

    ReplyDelete
  36. Errr. sorry but this is par for the course with a supernatural vampire show. The TV universe on this type of show, where predatory vampires who have to feed on blood exist, cannot be compared to our reality for OBVIOUS reasons. Every character on TVD and TO has murdered multiple people. In real life this obviously wouldn't be acceptable, that's why it's TV. It's a hyper exaggerated moral universe, one that is necessary on the show and cannot be compared to the one in reality. I don't understand why people have to act like there has to be some kind of moral realism here...that impossible with this type of show. Why try and censor fantasy and escapism? We are responsible for separating fiction from reality. In the universe of TVD, Stefan, Elena, and Damon are heroes. In our reality, they'd all be serial killers. That' why the fantasy world of TV is fun and interesting.

    ReplyDelete
  37. I hope they give us some explanation regarding this sudden change of mind of esther.

    ReplyDelete
  38. But you think Stefan is? Stefan is a mass murderer, just like every vampire on TVD or TO. In varying amounts. Even a young vampire like Caroline has killed or allowed the death of at least 15 people that I can think of. You are not being objective if you consider Stefan a hero and Damon not. They are both protagonists and in the moral universe of TVD they are both heroes as well.

    ReplyDelete
  39. Both Stefan and Damon ARE better than Klaus, though. What separates them from Klaus is that they both are capable of remorse, growth, and change. Klaus isn't and doesn't care. That's the difference. So Stefan is wrong about that.

    ReplyDelete
  40. When has Damon ever shown remorse for killing Jeremy in Season 2? He even plotted with Enzo to kill him again in Season 5. I don't see any growth or real change in Damon, and Stefan has always see-sawed back and forth between being okay and losing control and ripping people to shreds. I don't really see a whole of change with either character - Elena had had change but in a negative direction.

    ReplyDelete
  41. It sounds to me trash soap opera. She should want to kill them not reuniting them.
Oh boy, they ruined everything about their history. It's not realistic.

    ReplyDelete
  42. Klaus has felt and showed remorse, that's why he gave Davina the spell to make daylight rings, because he felt bad for killing Tim.

    ReplyDelete
  43. Yay for Alive Evans coming back!

    ReplyDelete
  44. Some reports online say she'll be in a total of five episodes next year.

    ReplyDelete
  45. and when some supernatural creature somewhere in the world saw Hayley with a baby they wouldn't put it all together ? Of course they would. That is why it's best for her to stay and fight to make their home safe for her return.

    ReplyDelete
  46. Klaus has shown remorse how ever fleetingly. And growth wise, he has changed (albeit subtlety and not much) as he let Rebekah leave New Orleans and instead tried talking to her (though he did stab her with the white oak stake) instead of just daggering her for a century. Plus he clearly showed a level of growth with his love of Hope, and forgiveness of Marcel (whereas before he would've just killed him outright). Not to mention his although still violent and ruthless goal of murdering all his enemies to give Hope a save place to leave does have moral and somewhat selfless intentions. There's no doubt Klaus is still as damaged and capable of brutal, monstrous acts, but he has changed over the course of season 1. So I'd say Stefan was right about himself and the others and Klaus. Except Klaus can trust Rebekah, Elijah and (almost certainly) Marcel and Cami.

    ReplyDelete
  47. Could be reunite in death? Sounds a little cheesy but would keep to her past behaviour

    ReplyDelete
  48. Still would be suspicious. People would keep track of her to make sure Klaus isn't lying about the baby dying

    ReplyDelete
  49. Too bad. I really don't like the new girl.

    ReplyDelete
  50. Did you read the last part of the paragraph? Esther wants to reunite her family to cause: 'Untold torment not only for the siblings but also for anyone the care about.'

    ReplyDelete
  51. And in TO, Klaus and Elijah will be the heroes. I'm sure baby Hope would consider Klaus, Elijah and Marcel heroes for saving her from the witches. TO also saved all the mortals in NOLA from the destructive storms of the uncompleted harvest, not to mention saving Davina's life by completing the harvest and her resurrection.

    ReplyDelete
  52. Klaus showed remorse for killing Tim also for killing Carol Lockwood until Tyler came at him. He showed remorse for the way he treated Rebekah, for choking Hayley, for daggering Elijah. As much or more remorse than I've ever seen from Damon.

    ReplyDelete
  53. The Guerrera wolves need Hayley dead, she's the inherited wolf leader.

    ReplyDelete
  54. It was cold, but he did heal Damon for free at graduation, and saved Stefan, Elena and Caroline from the witches.

    ReplyDelete
  55. At the beginning of the season Klaus had shown no growth, but he sure did by the final! He obviously was trying all season to work out his issues by talking to Cami, to bevome a better father than he had.
He busted into that church weak, stumbling to take on a voven of witches to save Hayley/Hope, who knows what those witches could have done to him. He cried and held Hayley because he couldn't save her.

    ReplyDelete
  56. that was him getting on her good side for his own benefit...nothing about remorse.

    ReplyDelete
  57. True. I like Klaus, I actually really like the guy. But he can do really awful things. But also sometimes good things.
