Previously on The Bridge: Marco left David Tate to rot in prison, Sebastian Cerisola is having Adriana followed, and Sonya & Marco were able to recover Eva's signed affidavit, but added a huge bullseye on their backs in the process of doing so.
Frye & Adriana:
This episode did a great job of displaying the odd partnership that Adriana and Frye have. Frye is a pain in the ass and unabashedly crude, yet Adriana and her girlfriend seem to like him. Unfortunately, as we saw at the end of this episode that friendship would seem to have come at great cost for Adriana. Although it wasn't completely clear at the end of the episode, it would seem that Adriana's investigation has cost her girlfriend her life. I suspect that we are going to see a very different Adriana for the latter part of this season, not dissimilar from the different Marco that we have seen since his son's death. I really enjoyed the scenes with Adriana and Frye in this episode just because of the great partnership that they have together. As much as I do like their partnership, I'm looking forward to seeing Adriana branch out on her own.
Marco:
When I interviewed the Demian Bichir a few months back he said that this season was going to delve into the gray area of morality. It doesn't get much grayer than what Marco has done in the last few episodes. After executing two corrupt police officers, Marco is forced to not only lie to the public about his heroism (which isn't really a lie, but it's complicated) and lie to Sonya about why he isn't going to use Eva's affidavit to bust a bunch of the corrupt police officers including Captain Robles (it's for her own good, but I somehow doubt she would agree with Marco's decision even given all of the facts). This was an excellent change of mood for this storyline because they have had an extremely odd relationship. Even though they've always clearly been at odds, I don't think it's ever been quite as pronounced as it was in this episode.
Sonya & Jack:
Back in the very beginning of the season I speculated that Sonya was getting to know Jack Dobbs for the simple reason that she needed a new source of info about her sister's murder. I would never have guessed that Jack was doing the very same thing! Unable to drop the obsession, Sonya spent years trying to get Jim to tell her why. While the revelation that Jim was unarmed definitely hurt Sonya, I think it's fairly obvious that Jack's silence about Jim's murderous ways and the fact that he was running his own investigation, hurt Sonya more. Sorry to disappoint any Jack/Sonya shippers out there, but I think that relationship is on the downhill. They did a great job this season of creating that relationship and then tearing it down at just the right point.
Fausto Galvan:
During the last few episodes, Fausto's location had started to annoy me. First he was on a random boat, then he was in the middle of nowhere, then a random bar, and in this episode he was back in the hangar with the boat. Anyone with a boat will tell you the worst thing about having a boat is when you can't do anything with it. The fact that the writers have seemingly decided to explore Fausto's human need to be a normal person is absolutely fantastic. They have made it pretty clear that Fausto Galvan is an evil SOB, but he's also a person and based on Charlotte's new position as informant I am going to speculate that we could see the end of Fausto Galvan by the end of this season.
Eleanor Nacht:
This episode had some great scenes with Eleanor. The back story for Eleanor was quite intriguing and wonderfully delivered by Franka Potente. Eleanor is able to scare people simply by her peculiar demeanor and that is why she is the perfect nemesis for Sonya Cross. Sonya has extreme difficulty picking up on any signals from other people and when she does pick up on them, it's normally her way or the highway. I'm really looking forward to the two of them meeting in the future.
Charlotte Millwright:
Charlotte has had a bad, bad case of rotten luck. That being said it's pretty clear that a fair amount of her bad luck is her own fault. Going into business with the cartel was an extremely poor decision. Going into business with the cartel WITH RAY was a downright stupid decision. One of my favorite parts of this episode was the entire diner scene; both the one with Eleanor and the one with Agent McKenzie. The scenes were both well written and well acted. I'm extremely interested to see how Charlotte deals with her new job. If she tells Ray, I think she'll be dooming herself to worse than prison.
Rating: 9.5/10 - The last 3 episodes have been absolutely phenomenal. I hope that The Bridge is able to maintain it's momentum going into its eighth episode next week. Even if next week's isn't quite as good as this episode was, with this set of talent and gripping stories, it's sure to be great.

ReplyDeleteThanks for the review. And you are so right about Charlotte's choosing Ray--I think the writers' have all along written the Charlotte character as not the brightest bulb, which is why I am not sure Annabeth Gish's casting was a good fit as she is an actress that naturally projects intelligence and for sure Charlotte has not gotten by on her smarts. Can't wait for the upcoming meeting twixt Sonya and Eleanor. I think Eleanor will respect Sonya.
ReplyDeleteI hope their meeting will be a high point for the series.
ReplyDeleteif they meet they will certainly dont touch each other ;)
ReplyDeleteThis second season has been absolutely brilliant. The writing is so intricate, and so many little elements thrown during the first season start to become important and utilized in an excellent way to deliver such a convergent story. Kudos to the writers, actors, directors and photographers -- the photography in this show is far above par.
