Rookie Blue - Everlasting - Review: Finale

7 Aug 2014

Welcome to the last Rookie Blue review of the year, season 5 finale, "Everlasting". More like everlasting uncertainty with a hint of confusion? Nevertheless, let’s get on with it.

Is Andy a part of the Avengers? Apparently she’s invincible because she got out of the explosion unscathed, except for some debris on her. Even her uniform’s still in one piece. I know she’s the lead character on the show and they probably won’t kill her off, but come on? Not even a scratch? Anyway, Sam ran into the wreckage to look for Andy. They shared a touching moment after Sam found Andy still alive. I’ll admit I felt a little emotional and as frantic as Sam looked during that scene. I got smoke in my eye too, Sam.
McNally is Wonder Woman.

Correct me if I’m wrong, but I believe this is the happiest and steadiest we’ve seen of Sam and Andy together in a finale. After five seasons I think the fans deserve it. Can’t wait to see what Marlo will be stirring up for next season though. I don’t think she’s pregnant, I think there’s something else, a bigger mystery to it because a pregnant ex is downright soap opera-ish. For now, let’s all be grateful no one died or got shot at during the finale.

What am I watching, a soap opera?

I’ve been invested in this storyline for Gail since the last season. I was convinced that Holly is what Gail’s been missing and searching for, and the writers gave us a very promising beginning of what could have been a beautiful relationship. So, I was under the impression that with a steady relationship this time, Gail’s main focus for this season would be on her career. But no, the writers decided to pull a Calzona on us with all the kid drama. Except Holly’s not going to Africa and there is no baby growing inside Gail, jumping straight into preadolescence and puberty. If the writers still have any shred of sanity left in them, please please please, do not let the adoption go through. I had high hopes for Gail’s character arc this season but I was left disappointed. If season 6 happens to be the last season as I predict it will be, I want Holly to come back and be with Gail for good. Well for now, it was fun while it lasted.

When Sergeant Shaw straps on his vest you know shit is getting real. With multiple bombs and the suspect on the loose, Oliver decided to join his fellow officers in the hunt for Ted McDonald. I miss Oliver on the streets!

Don't mess with Papa Shaw.

So here’s my theory:

With the bombing that happened four years ago, Ted McDonald did some digging into the police force and justice system and found out that the higher ups have been making deals with the Irish mob. To make the police notice their corrupted system, Ted set up bombs targeting the children of those responsible and then let himself get caught at his son’s grave. With all the evidence in his hard drive, he’s willing Sam to look into it. So either he’s really unhinged and vindictive and wanted to blow the station up or someone, probably involving Commissioner Santana, deliberately had someone put a bomb in the evidence room as a distraction and have Ted killed making it look like a suicide. Either way, Santana is bad news. And a giant douche.

This episode we learnt something very important: Nick’s full name. Nicholas Michael Collins ran into his love interest again and the third time Nick decided to track her down, because this is a TV show and a handsome man stalking you is charming and romantic. They made out until Juliet learnt that Nick is a police officer and got the hell outta there like her life depended on it. I’m sure we’ll see her again next season.

Who are you? A drug lord? Or are you in a mafia?

My thoughts on season 5. At first when we were granted with a big fat 22 episode season, I was over the moon because they have quite a big cast and having more episodes will definitely be an advantage to give every character proper screen time. But when I learnt that the network decided to cut it into half and call the other 11 episodes Season 6, not only will we be short of 4 episodes in 2 seasons, it means lesser screen time to do the characters justice. From my point of view, it looked like the writers and producers thought with a 22 episode season, they can have the luxury to take their time and stretch things out a little. Then the network cut it short while the season is airing, making it difficult to change and rewrite things. So, we’re granted a poorly written season. I think this is the most underwhelming season by far. A lot of things are unexplained, half-assed and rushed, it’s like Hurricane RB hit me and before I know it, it’s over and leaving me really confused. Not to mention all these changes made it look like the show is ending after the next season. If that’s the case I wouldn’t be surprised.

For instance, Chris and Traci’s storyline. The only take away for me for Traci this season is that she looks great in bangs. No development in Leo’s custody, not even a hint of reconciliation with Steve, barely any proper development screen time like some of the characters. And what’s with ETF Bailey? Am I sensing something there? Maybe I’m just being paranoid? No more love triangles on the show, please!

I feel bad for Chris. He’s barely in this season and it’s like he appeared in the finale just for the sake of it. What happened with the drugs storyline? Are we done with that? Or will it be dragged into the next season?

And then we have Duncan, who probably had more screen time than some of the series regulars. I would’ve enjoyed it if the character is less of a prick. Even with this season coming to an end, I still haven’t seen much redeeming qualities about him. Try harder next season.

Dov and Chloe needs to fix this. Nobody’s nerd-fect, at least Chloe fessed up about the kiss and didn’t cheat on Dov! They need to sit down and have a talk because I don’t believe they’re over over. The nerd kingdom needs they’re king and queen!

It seemed like Sam and Andy is the only couple to survive Hurricane RB and I think Mcswarek fans should cheers to that. They’ve come a long way.

Let’s end this on a high note, shall we? It’s been a pleasure to write reviews for one of my favourite shows, I read and value every comment from you guys and hopefully I’ll be back for season 6 next year. Tell me how you feel about the finale and season 5 in general, I would love to hear what you guys think!

  3. too much time has passed for it to be Sam's kid she would be showing more if it was, if its early enough to not be recognizable as a fetus on a sonogram and she can walk into a room of detectives without anyone seeing she is pregnant then if she is its by someone other then Sam.

  4. Not a fan of this season...too many storylines were either just dropped, given short shrift or were simply over the top (Duncan). What happened to Best and Williams? Why didn't we see Celery? How did Diaz get out of his drug-dealer pickle without repercussions? How on earth did Marlo end up keeping her job after what she did last season?? For me the biggest letdown was the complete ditching of the Andy/Nick relationship. It's as if it was set up by the writers as a popularity contest to see which ship sailed witg the fans. I don't like McSwarek and never have; I thought Andy did much better emotionally with Nick, who besides being a gentleman, was very clear in his intentions and let Andy know from the start how he felt without any silly adolescent angst. Too bad the show has gone down this path. It used to be so great.

  5. I think Marlo is involved somehow! I mean she goes into evidence locker and nothing happens then she send McNally and boom. What if the baby in the ultrasound was the little boy that died and it was Marlo and Ted's son???

  6. I think you said everything I thought and felt about this season. Case Closed!

And from now on, I will call Andy : Mary Sue.

Great review like always. CYA all next year.

  8. Ok, I'm not sure why my previous comment got removed, maybe it's the link? Anyway, I really wished you're right but I read an article online that Marlo is indeed pregnant with Sam's baby. If you're interested in reading it I'm sure you can google it.

  10. Ahhh, well. It seems many people are disappointed with this season. Rightfully so. I don't want to choose, I think both relationships are great but the show runners made it clear that Sam and Andy will definitely be endgame regardless who or what comes in their way.

  11. That's a really great theory ;)

in the interview they ask tassie Cameron to tease what will happen in season 6 this is what she said TTJ: One last ask before we let you go: Tease Season 6 for us?
TC: These are the questions that always get me into trouble! I think people are going to see some of the things … they’ve wanted to see since they’ve first seen Sam and Andy together.

  13. Okay, so that finale left me reeling. It was extremely cruel to torture us with that. I'm going to hold on to the sliver of hope that it's not Sam's baby. Like seriously. (Let's hear it up for the McSwarek though!!!!!)
I hope Traci ends up with ETF Bailey. I don't really like Traci and Steve together. There's just something that irks me about the two of them.
As for Dov and Chloe, well, they just need to get back together. It's as simple as that.
It's good to see Oliver back in action. We need to get him back in blue as soon as possible!
Duncan is really irking me. I mean, I feel sympathetic for his almost death, but seriously. There has to be a quality about him that either I would love about him or love to hate about him.
I feel like there's no drama without any drama between Sam and Andy. But it was still cruel to leave us like that. I was sure that some "The Vow" sh*t was going to happen. (But really, no scratches?! It was a freaking bomb!)

I wonder what's going to happen between Nick and Juliet. I think that maybe her father is a cop and he died and she doesn't want to relive anything like that or she's related to a cop at 15 division. (Honestly, I'm very fond of the name Juliet. I don't like they used that name. My favorite OTP is Psych's Shawn and Juliet, so....)
I really hope they resolve Chris' drug issue, cause there's nothing to talk about with Chris. Like nothing's happening with him.
It was extremely cruel to torture us with that! And the fact that the next season returns next year. Ugh! I was holding onto that promise of 22 episodes!

  14. One thing I do know for sure is that Andy is going to have one hell of a case of PTSD.

    ReplyDelete
  15. I'm rewatching the episode and I find it hard to believe that in the midst of all this chaos, Nick had no idea what was going on. That and the fact that Andy left unscathed. It turns out that she wasn't in direct contact with the blast. Though, I feel extremely sorry for the officer that got thrown back into the wall. That wall was pretty banged up too.
Andy bends down after dropping something, so I think that's why she wasn't hurt as bad. Maybe she has lingering side effects or head trauma that hasn't been discovered. Who knows?

  16. The finale was okay. The season in general, was really underwhelming. I'm really annoyed with Traci and Chris' storylines. It just didn't feel like a finale at all, and I guess it's because like you said how the season got cut short. Whatever it was, I don't like it. I do think Andy will have some side effects from the explosion.

  17. Thanks for the review. So far, this is my least favorite Rookie Blue season, and the only one where I actuallywasn't in a hurry to watch the episode on the same night. I'm not sure who the writers are trying to cater to, but it's definitely not me. A few points:
    1. The Duncan storyline, though annoying, was one of the more interesting subplots of the season. At the same time, it would be nice to have at least one season where Andy doesn't screw up and do something stupid.
    2. I agree about your theory on the Ted storyline. When the bomb detonated at the police station, he seemed just as surprised as Sam.
    3. I don't get why people are so upset about the Gail adoption supblot..it seems to fit with everything that has happened to her, and like others, I saw it coming from a mile. Anyway, knowing the writers, it probably won't happen. I was more bummed about the direction of the Holly/Gail story, because the relationship seemed to make her happier than any of her former relationships. I still see Dov as Gail's soulmate, but since that doesn't seem to be the direction that the writers want, I had actually warmed up to the idea of Gail and Holly.
    4. I'm not sure why they had to mess with Traci and Steve, one of the only current couples that I actually enjoyed watching together. I thought they were adorable together. BTW, I much preferred Traci's look in the first 3 seasons. The bangs look very artificial.
    5. Sam and Andy's relationship continues to give me the creeps. I'm not entirely sure why. I thought they were OK in the early seasons, but lately, I feel like the chemistry is way off.
    6. I don't know what they're doing with Dov's character, but he always gets these directionless plots. The actor is one of the best in the cast, and they really don't take enough advantage of him.
7.Chloe needs to go. Incredibly annoying character. I get that they want to have a cute quirky character, but the actress cannot pull it off,
    8. Nick continues to be one of my favorite characters; I actually like his new love interest.
    9. Marlo's back! I liked her, but I'm hoping that the ultrasound is not her's. However, I'm still annoyed with Frank being made a scapegoat for Marlo's screwup, If anyone should have been blamed, aside from Marlo, it should have been Sam and Andy, who went to great extents to cover up Marlo's problem, until it was too late.
    10. Where's Luke? I miss him.
    11. The drug storyline for Chris was boring, pointless and a waste of screen time.
    12. Oliver is a good Chief, but I do miss seeing him in a squad car interacting with the rookies.

    ReplyDelete
  18. I definitely agree. I really liked the way the Andy/NIck relationship evolved from one of friendship, and I hate the way it was ditched, especially in favor of the Sam and Andy relationship which just seems dysfunctional. It brings back Chuck/Blair/Dan flashbacks from Gossip girl.

OK it is my turn I guess. Dear Zhaobin thank you for the all nice recaps that you are doing they are all amazing. One point that I didn't agree is the season 5 is the worst one. Not actually. If we talk about the soap opera thing show already turned into a soap opera in season 4. Marlo Sam Andy and Nick quadrangle was too much for me. The point in season 5 that writers were ready to go with 22 episodes that is why it was a slow season. Plus they cannot consider with the characters Frank, Luke since the actors have another duties in another shows etc. Plus we didn't see Holly too much since actress is living in Los Angeles. For my point of view writers with this circumstances did an amazing work. while the networks announced that they split the season into two they were filming 5x11. Therefore the mistakes are done by ABC and Global IMO. In this season I really love the character developments of Sam and Gail plus the story line between Chloe and Dov was realistic. Still I think that if Marlo is pregnant it will not ruin McSwarek. Andy will try to step back and she will not be voluntary to stay between Sam and his unborn, but as we know this strategy will not work for them. In 5x11 Andy saw that how much Sam cares about her and how much he loves her.

  20. Hasan Rüstemoğlu8 August 2014 at 11:03

I never think that they will replace McSwarek with McCollins or any other relationship. McSwarek started from the beginning therefore I was pretty sure that in season 4 there will be point where the table will be upside down and it happened in 4x13 when Sam got shot. For me Marlo and Nick are just the obstacles on the main relationship, the actors did their job amazingly and now they are considering their own stories (I am not sure about Marlo) and I did not like Nick's new love interest she looks really older than Nick. This season I liked two things about Nick when we learned about his childhood plus while he saved life of Dumbcan pardon Duncan :D Finally he got a story line other than being someones boyfriend.

    ReplyDelete
  21. Yes, there should definitely be a continuation of the corruption in the police force for the next season. I kinda love the idea and I'd like to see how the officers of 15 would be involved in it. If I were one of the writers, I would probably introduce more characters for this storyline, white shirts, higher ups etc (even the Pecks), but that would mean an even bigger cast into yet another smaller season. That being said, I'm not a writer on the show so I'll just have to see how they handle this storyline.

    ReplyDelete
  22. I'm pretty sure a lot of us felt cheated by the networks. Sigh. I like ETF Bailey and I don't mind them being together just don't make it a love triangle.

    ReplyDelete
  23. About Gail's adoption storyline, I MIGHT not react so negatively if we actually get to see some interaction between Gail and Sophie. I also saw this coming since very early on and I also think that it probably won't happen. I might change my mind and get on board with the adoption idea if the writers showed us that Gail has a strong support system and a less demanding and dangerous job. I mean, look at Traci and Leo.

I talked about Sam and Andy's repercussions regarding Marlo and the Ford shootings weeks ago in one of my reviews, I mentioned that they should've at least gave us a glimpse or hints of the consequences of their actions. But this is TV land and things aren't always realistic.

I also like Nick's new love interest. Something about the mystery of Juliet got me intrigued.

And about Traci's season 3 hairstyle, I had to google it because I couldn't remember and you're right it looked good :)

    Thanks for reading!

    ReplyDelete
  24. Looking at the logistics and scheduling standpoint of season 5, I totally get the inconsistencies and lack of closures of some of the characters. And if the networks did not screw over the show and actually give us the normal 13 episodes season or even 22 episodes, I'm sure things would've been much different. To look on the brighter side, yes, the writers made lemonades.

I don't think anything will ruin Mcswarek because I read somewhere sometime ago that Mcswarek will be endgame once the series ends.

And thank you for your kind words every week I really appreciate it, it's been my pleasure writing these :)

I would say if they do arrest one or two high ranking officer involve in this bombing and link to the Irish mob......they likely get promoted to detective.....my guess it will be Andy and Dov will finally be rookie detective sometime next season......both deserve it I think

Marlo is pregnant is she? Interesting. Think I'm gonna watch next season now.

  27. Thank you for posting such thoughtful reviews of Rookie Blue. I have mixed emotions about this season. Because Ben Bass' Sam Swarek continues to be the most compelling and interesting character on the show, episode 6 was the highlight of the season for me with episode 11 a close second. After that, I'm hard-pressed to identify an episode as excellent as many of the ones from earlier seasons.I'd much rather see the show end while all of the original cast members are in tact and the creative team is still inspired.
While I realize the initial inspiration for the series was a desire to shed light on what it takes to become a seasoned cop, the Sam & Andy love story is the real "heart" of the show for me. The actors and the characters just "work" together -- they have a sort of magic you can't predict or manufacture. Therefore, I sincerely hope they don't waste the last 11 episodes having these two ripped apart and agonizing over a pregnant Marlo. Given how gracious and grateful this cast and crew have been to the loyal following, I'm having a hard time wrapping my head around the writer's decision to go down a path that they must know would feel like a big "screw you" to the viewers. But ultimately the characters and their journeys are at the mercy of the writers who created them. The only solace is that they now seem committed to keeping Sam/Andy together 'til the end, which leads me to believe the love and devotion these two have for each other will be the real story.
As for the rest of the ensemble, I'd love to see Oliver out of that white shirt and back on the street where he belongs by his own choosing; Dov focusing more on becoming an intelligence officer than reconciling with Chloe (who's hit and miss with me); Frank and Noelle returning in some capacity. Tracy's best season was 3; her character has never recovered from the death of Jerry Barber. And Noam Jenkins continues to be missed as an actor. I think Charlotte Sullivan has done a great job with Gail, but I found her storyline this season woefully underwhelming. It all seemed to be driven by shock value. And poor Chris, if you blinked, you missed his substance abuse story. For the first time, I found Nick somewhat interesting.
In short, I feel pretty cheated as a viewer -- the season was way too short, and the pace was far too slow.

    ReplyDelete
  28. Yes it's definitely time for someone to move up the ranks. I would love to see Dov venture out to Intelligence like they hinted a few episodes ago, and seeing him work with Marlo in the finale I think he would be a good fit.

    ReplyDelete
  29. I like your attitude ;) The reaction I witnessed online wasn't good, some people talked about not watching the next season because of this.

    ReplyDelete
  30. Thank you for your comment. I agree with what you said and I hope if the series ends soon, it' would be the writers' decision. All good things must come to an end, right? I think this season's MVP for me would be Gail and Sam. It's nice to see two of the most closed off characters on the show go through such a vast growth.

As for the underwhelming and short season, I stand by my theory that the networks screwed the show and the viewers over. If they stuck with the 13 episodes tradition, I'm pretty sure this season would've been much better. It looked like the writers thought having 22 episodes they can take their time with some of the storylines. They had some hits and misses, but overall it looks like a pretty lackluster season, well at least for me.

Ah,thank you 😃 I love beeing on the opposite side of most people.

No kidding aside,I have always liked Marlo and I hope they write a good storyline for her.

  32. I just read it how HOW is she 4 months pregnant with zero visible cues? I am a little disappointed in the writers, there was no bump, no nausea, no excessive bathroom breaks, they could have at least made her boobs bigger, it just doesn't align timeline wise sorry writers but I think you made a mistake.

  33. i hope that the baby his not not sam i also thinks its not marlo but i think its some one else but dov thinks it marlo it should be chloe or andys baby i just hope its not marlo because of the trouble she did in seasson 4 but how we have to wait till next year to see what happen next but if it his marlos and sam i will stop waiting the show because its only going to hurt andy again sorry

    ReplyDelete
  34. I am one who was thoroughly disgusted with the hint of Marlo's pregnancy and Sam being the father.
The writers doing this was just one more job of screwing this relationship. Season 5 has given them a break, and after 4, they deserve it. One of the theories I have read, is that Marlo is only back because they are using her to cover the dirty side of the top cops. To me, that is the only way she could have kept her job, otherwise, the writers did a disservice to the police community by letting her stay on the force. She should have been fired from police work entirely, there is no way she would have come back in another department. Also think she planted the bomb, the suspect was as surprised as Sam when they heard the noise, she also sent Andy to the evidence room, coincidence, don't think so.
I also agree, Chris was left out in the cold, Dove had very little to do, Traci had a short story, Gail who I love, is too good for Holly, giver her a break. Nick, thrilled that he has someone, that would be a plus.
McSwarek fans are discouraged one more time, not sure if this will hurt the fan base, but it certainly good.
Thanks for your reviews, I think you have one of the best out.

I read that same interview with Tassie Cameron and what she said was they wanted the audience to assume, assume the baby was Sam's assume being the operative word. She did not confirm anything. We will not get anything definitve until those remaining episodes air next year.

  40. I barely started watching the show 2 weeks ago & I'm super invested and all caught up lol. I think Marlo is in on the corruption and planted the bomb, that's why she suggested Andy go. Chloe is the prego & kept trying to tell Duv but he was too busy helping Chris. Duncan is just a puppet send by his corrupt step dad to get rid of the strongest officers in the 15, because he knows they're smart enough to discover all of the corruption eventually. That's why they killed the bomber, he was actually telling the truth and had proof. This is just my take on everything, can't wait till next season!
