  1. Terrific finale. A show that had always been morally very clean cut just waded into really intriguing and morally complex waters. The show surprised me without outright deceiving me; the editing led me to believe certain truths about certain characters, but never actually validated my assumptions.

The cliffhanger was a brutal way to leave things until next summer, but the second season promises to be intense and far more sophisticated and an all around completely different show.

  2. THANK YOU! love your comment because of it being a solid critic and saying how was the finale and the cliffhanger without giving any spoilers. I've just finished 1x06 and I expect to catch up with the rest soon

  3. Watched the ep with a knot in my stomach trying to figure out of Granderson is really a good guy or not. I'm waiting on things to go bad. Much as I enjoy Titus Welliver's work I really hope he isn't playing a villain here. :-)

I knew Alfrie Woodward was gonna be a bad guy! Dog gone it!!! I will be extremely annoyed if this is a cliffhanger.

    I am extremely annoyed. ;-) It's a freaking cliffhanger. :-P

  4. Yes, the new waters do promise that the second season will have enough meat to stand up to the tension they've spent the first season building. This is the kind of story that I tend to feel should end in one season because once the stated problem is solved the show spends their second season trying to re-invent the wheel and never getting there. (Prison Break is one the prime examples that comes to mind.) The groundwork they laid in this episode gives me faith that season two will be able to build on the story they're telling.

  5. decent finale, but at times was a bit cheesy feeling and heavy on the overdramatic bits for me... still a good watch with a nice twist that the elder Granderson was something of a warlord herself.. the ship being captured by one guy was a bit too hard to believe, and the general lack of keeping up one's guard by the entire crew was a bit annoying as well. still a decent watch and I look forward to seeing how they proceed from here

  6. If I might share my thoughts, though I do warn that [SPOILERS] are involved.

I'll agree with you that the twist was a nice touch and they have done a good job setting up the next season, but I don't see the moral complexity here. What is Granderson guilt of? Deception, duplicity, and mass murder. What are the Warlords guilty of, that we've seen? Using force to establish a safe-zone, and giving due warning before using force. We've also seen them going out on and marking off unsafe areas, while Granderson and her posse are holed-up in their little oasis. If anything, the Warlords--whether or not they're autocratic--have more moral legitimacy at this point than Granderson, who has the definite stink of self-righteousness on her, and who is apparently now the solely qualified person to determine which people are "necessary" to rebuild society.

Still, all of that is provisionally until season two. They could certainly take it in different directions. What I anticipate is a bit more action, adventure, and political intrigue, with a dash of more moral complexity thrown in.

What I've actually liked about this show, though, is that they focused on telling a good sound story and haven't bitten off off more than they can chew. There haven't been any "game changers" or wild ambitions, but on the other hand, we've haven't seen the kind of schizophrenic plotting and characterization that have occurred on other shows (I'm looking at you, Revolution).

  7. Here's something else to ponder [SPOILERS]:

If Granderson's been lying through about the situation in Baltimore, what else did she lie about? Did the presidential bunker just "go silent"? Why did the Warlords try and acquire the Constitution? What of Granderson's vague references to things they "had to do"?

  8. I don't like cliffhangers--they are not fair to loyal viewers who don't need them and don't mean anything to unloyal viewers.

  9. It had some good points to it. The city seems to be a Soylent Green kind of place. I was very surprised they killed off the Captain's wife. I thought for sure they would be reunited for the finale. As far as the cliffhanger goes, I didn't think it was that strong of an ending. I'll watch season two, but this finale didn't really get me too excited.

  10. Good solid first season, I liked the characters and the plot. I am curios enough for Season 2, the only thing predictable was the death of the captains wife. She had to die to make room for possibly anything romantic with the Captain and the Doc, not that I think the show should go there. For the summer it was a nice distraction, I liked the show!

  11. Well, than you should watch more procedural shows. The Last Ship was never one of them. Tha base of a serialized show is the cliffhanger and the mythology behind it. They may be something to keep the viewers watching the show, but they're also little climaxes within the story.

  12. It was a great finale for a solid season. The action was good from the beggining of the show and they really worked out the relationships, the characters and their personalities and stories.

  13. Back to the Ship! Kill that Fat Cop!

Just did a marathon of the show yesterday(Sunday) making it right as the Season Finale aired. Nice ride, really like the show. I have always loved shows where group is isolated on a ship, submarine, aircraft, spaceship, or even islands. It makes for great adventures, I am used to them from watching Anime, where are several good series where you follow a crew on a ship other crafts. So watching the Last Ship was really fun for me.

And this episode, I would say the twist at the end was really good, but I kind of spoiled myself from experience. As soon as the VidCom started and I saw the actress playing the new leader Granderson, I was like oh she is bad... and what do you know she was bad...

Also at the start of the episode during guest credits I saw Titus Welliver, and I thought Ah shiit, its about to get more interesting. I like the types of roles he play, some good and some bad, but even the bad are good bad roles. But here it might seem he is indeed a good guy.

Anyway get back to the ship guys. Casey/Mike Slattery shoot the Fat Cop dead, initiate firing command. take control!

  14. SPOILERS! Watching it again now. I'm so disappointed in Granderson. Her personality is one we've seen before in apocalyptic shows but she's a little different in her ideas and power. The power has gone to HER head. She really thinks she's something special. I don't get why these doctors and others are following her.
On the other side of it, the Warlords are also the type of personalities we've seen in many apocalyptic shows. Their leader probably wasn't very successful before the outbreak. Now people look up to and listen to him. Sure, he'll help people but only if they do things HIS way. He'll do anything to keep that power.
I hate to wait so long for it to come back, it turned out to be a great show!

  15. That was a real nice surprise, I'm dying until next season!!

  16. I think that the warlords may not be that bad after all. The real villain here is Granderson. There's so much they can do in the second season. They could actually spend at least the first half of the season on land and take over the ship in the other half.

  17. I do feel sad they didn't get a clear shot at Granderson now. I wonder what Season 2 will bring, I am really excited about the show. And indeed, the warlords don't seem to be that bad at this point. Remember when Chandler's father tried to reach Olympia and the "Thugs" tried to deny him access to it, they appearantly knew that Olympia was no good, something Chandler found out right before the end.
