Went with good, had some great bits but was patchy in places for me. I'm not a fan of the Paternoster Gang though truth be told, they bore me to tears!
I liked it, it wasn't jumping all over the place, we got time to spend with Clara and her feelings about the Doctor and also got to see the Doctor struggle with his new face as well.
I really liked the new Doctor. I mean, we all know that he will never end up with a companion(10.5 and Rose is the nearest thing) so it's for the better to ditch the flirting once and for all. By doing that we got to see a more real and interesting Clara and this darker Doctor is already growing on me, here hoping he goes into a killing marathon Jajaja
Don't get me wrong, I liked the episode, not like I loved Tennant's episodes or Classic Who's, but I still enjoyed it, the new Doctor seems to be great, Capaldi was brilliant, there were some really interesting ideas during the episode, some great thoughts about the Doctor ans what he is, if he still is what he was in the beginning after so much transformations and some plots worth a try. It's just the overall story supporting those ideas that was not interesting, almost bad. Am I the only one who thinks that these vilains have no charm at all ? At least during "The Girl in the Fireplace", they kinda had some thing interesting, there they were just... vilains, doing vilain stuff. Something that bothered me too, they did not tick, why ? Did they remove the piece that made them tick ? If they had put it, maybe the reference wouldn't have been so forced, maybe...
This could be a good season if: a) The writers could write as well for Clara as they do for the Doctor b) Actually explain ANYTHING about the story (seriously, where did the dinosaur come from and where did the robots come from?) c) Jenna Louise Coleman could act in a non-cringey way
Capaldi was very good. As was the writing for him. Some good writing and acting for/by Vastra/Jenny, though I've seen more maturity in a Power Rangers episode than in the Vastra/Jenny/Strax entrance to the restaurant basement. Coleman was boring and Clara had an irritating story. The story didn't make sense really. This used to be a good show but now it is, at times, laughable.
I gave "Deep Breath" a good rating because it was just that, a good starting point for the transition of Matt Smith's Doctor to Peter Capaldi's. The first half of the show was a bit of a mess in terms of storyline. I understand the robot's place was to draw a parallel to the Doctor, but the story itself needed to be more cohesive. I was puzzled to see PC being somewhat manic to the point of imitating MS's Doctor. Then I understood it was just the brilliance of PC's acting as he transitioned from the personality of 11 to 12. The last half of the show seemed to lock into place along with PC's interpretation of the Doctor. There were a lot of references to the past Doctors as well as past companions. My favorite call back was the Doctor jumping around in the alley saying, "I'm missing something ... it was here, it was here. I saw, what did I see?" What interest me the most about this episode was how the Doctor questioned out loud why did he have the face he has now? We may finally get the answer to a question I've always wondered ... is there a reason behind the different, specific faces of the Doctor?
It was good, but it wasn't great. I like Peter Capaldi quite a lot, which makes me happy, and the relationship between him and Clara seems promising; they had some excellent moments in tonight's episode. But there were three main problems. One, the writing was very all over the place in the first half, not tightening until the restaurant scene, by which time I didn't really care that much about the main villain because I just wanted more time with Twelve and Clara. Which brings problem two, the Paternoster Gang. I like them usually, but this was the episode for the new Doctor and his companion, and we really didn't three other characters taking up time. And finally, Capaldi never got his moment. The first time Nine tells Rose to run or tells her about how he feels the world, or when Ten strode out the TARDIS and says "No second chances. That's the sort of man I am," or Eleven showing off all the old Doctor faces and saying "Basically ... run." We didn't even see him pick out his outfit. It just didn't feel like the presentation of the new Doctor overall, but a slightly rambling, overstuffed, normal episode that just happened to have a new Doctor in it, and I miss the pomp and circumstance feeling of the other new Doctor episodes
I got adjusted to the new doctor as soon as he jumped out the window. Clara's struggle was well conveyed, I feel like it might have been more harder on her because it was a big change and also the doctor forgetting names and such. but good old 11th predicted as much and smoothed the process out, nicely done 11th.
I like the connections and mentions also in this episode. Amy! The Surviving Robots enemy was also a nice connection to one of my favorite episode. Maybe that's why I knew right away that these robots were just like those old ones from The Girl in the Fireplace episode. And Seems like we will learn a connection to them later with this promised land. And the new Umbrella lady Missy.
I'm assuming the same lady is also the woman in the shop, who wants keep Clara and The Doctor together, maybe just to help the Doctor for her own cause atm, but who knows, we need new friends for the new doctor.
I liked the humor in the ep. The guy playing the villain was great, but the story felt, in some ways, like it (rightly) took a back seat to introducing us to the new Doctor. I feel like it's going to take me a couple or three episodes to figure out how I feel about Capaldi's doctor.
The episode wasn't flawless, but I thoroughly enjoyed it, and I absolutely adored Capaldi's performance. I was glad that the episode had a little "breathing room" if you will, with some longer scenes here and there, and occasionally slowing the pace a bit as the characters all began coming to terms with the change. Yes, I did feel like a few moments in that first half were just a little choppy, but the story got stronger and stronger as it went along, and the ending was magnificent. Clara was the best we've seen her, I thought, especially in the restaurant, the scene where she faces the Clockwork Droid, and at that very beautiful ending. And again, Capaldi was stellar, and seems to be born for this role.
As far as New Doctor intro episodes go, (and I'm counting all 12 of them since 1963), I'd rate this second only to "The Eleventh Hour."
I really loved it. Twelve is a fierce doctor, absolutely fantastic - I was so apprehensive about Capaldi but he definitely fits the role really well. And the dynamic between Clara/Twelve is excellent, I can't wait to see his recklessness take her completely out of her comfort zone.
They did explain where the dinosaur came from. The TARDIS fell through time into the prehistoric past, was chased by the dinosaur and the Doctor made an other time jump just as the dinosaur ate the TARDIS, which brought the dinosaur along the trip with them.
Sorry but it was awful. Jumbled plot, sexist inappropriate doctor. The man just gives me the creeps. A contrast to Matt alright, I would not trust this doctor nor turn my back on him. The rest of the cast deserve praise for delivering such tosh so professionally. Moffat & Capaldi need to go before they destroy the show.
I put the episode, somewhere between "good" and "ok". I found it enjoyable, but it could of been better. I rated it a 7.5, on TV.Com. I could of did without, the heavy handed acceptance message. Matt Smith's phone call at the end, was all that was needed.
As for Peter Capaldi, i found him adequate. I liked Eccleston eventually, took an immediate liking to Tennant, but Smith took a few years to like. Mainly because i stopped watching, for two years. I imagine Capaldi, will grow on me as time passes.
I loved the premiere but it could have been better. I really liked Capaldi's take on the Doctor and can't wait to see where he goes from here. I really loved that we saw Matt again was really touching.
Strax just killed it in this ep. I couldn't stop laughing. Those 3 need their own shown
I wasn't impressed by the season premiere. Yeah, there were a few funny scenes thanks to Clara and potato head but that's all. I wish I hadn't read that Clara was being written off in this year's Christmas special. It makes whatever connection she will have with the new doctor irrelevant.
It's only a rumour that came about a couple of weeks back, and has been denied by everyone involved so far. Though it would be of course, so who knows, lol.
* Loved that it was about half an hour in before the Doctor started to put together the pieces of himself and the pieces of the story. Its not very often that tv shows nowadays have the time to do that or the will do so. Especially when they normally only run for an hour.
* I did like the throwback to the earlier story. Very nice.
* Was rattled by the Dinosaur translation. Actually kinda made me sad.
*Will be interesting to see how a non moffat story views and relates the Doctor to the Audience.
I wasn't particularly impressed sadly. The story was less than exciting, the opening action scenes looked quite poor and the Paternoster gang were a bit irritating. We get it, they're interspecies lesbians, we don't need about 20 reminders.
However, Capaldi was ok. It will take time for him to grow on me (it always does) so I reserve judgement on him for now, and Clara was cute. Loved having Matt return.
I don't know why but I always get a bit irked by Moffat's writing whenever he is explicitly talking to the audience using the dialogue. I wish he knew how to communicate ideas more subtly to the audience, but alas. He treats the audience as stupid.
NOTE: Name-calling, personal attacks, spamming, excessive self-promotion, condescending pomposity, general assiness, racism, sexism, any-other-ism, homophobia, acrophobia, and destructive (versus constructive) criticism will get you BANNED from the party.
loved it! well worth the wait!

ReplyDeleteBoring. But the last 5 minutes...

ReplyDeleteIt was exactly what I expected. Unfortunately.

ReplyDeleteI actually liked that it was a bit of a slow-moving episode. It felt a bit more like the older episodes.
ReplyDeleteI suspect I'll get used to Capaldi being the Doctor because I always manage to adjust each time the role is re-cast.
I am glad that it looks like they're ditching the possible romance with Clara.
This was a fantastic episode! Capaldi and Coleman were both great as usual. I am very excited about the rest of the season.

ReplyDelete"sexist inappropriate doctor."
ReplyDeleteWhat the... What are you on about?
Writing that last night I must have been very tired since I didn't really pick up on that completely.
ReplyDeleteIt was confusing at first to show how he has reintegrate himself after the regeneration.
ReplyDeleteIve seen it twice now so here goes
