Intruders - She Was Provisional - Review: "Number 9"

Dark and mysterious from the start , the show opens on an incident involving two mysterious men breaking into a girl's house and approaching her in her bedroom whilst she sleeps. They show her a symbol of which at this point we have no idea what it means or stands for. One of the men played by Robert Forster says "Were just here to Shepherd you" as if he is not talking to the girl , but someone else inside her. Presumably the girl is trying to fight whatever has taken over her , which you see in the next scene when she is having a "fit" on the bed. They leave a plane ticket and a card with the number 9 on as she is sitting in the corner of the room speaking an unknown language repeating the same words over and over. The girl later kills herself whilst in the bath after waking up outside on the grass and then seeing this number 9 card in her room.The show is very dark.

It cuts to the present day where you see a woman and her son get killed by a mysterious man who was also there in the opening scene in 1990. We don't know why he killed them or what he is doing. We then see a married couple called Jack and Amy Whelan at their home celebrating her birthday. Straight after that we see a bearded man making a radio broadcast in a van about "them" which most likely means the men in black from the opening scene. One of whom is listening to the broadcast (the shady killer). We then see a little girl called Madison celebrating her birthday as well. What's weird is that on three occasions; the girl in the opening scene , Madison and Amy Whelan are all celebrating their birthday before something happens to them. These scenes end very abruptly and before you know it you're watching another storyline take place before returning back to the previous one , which is a little irritating.

Most of the episode is focused on Jack Whelan where his wife Amy Whelan has gone missing and he has no idea where she is. The panic kicks in when he hasn't heard from her in two days. He tries to call her , but receives no answer. Later on a cab man ring's using her phone , when asked if he has seen Amy the cab man says "He can't remember her". Jack ask's him to drop the phone off at La Soleil Hotel. He rings the hotel and they don’t have anyone under “Amy Whelan” checked in. He then begins to panic, he checks her schedule (weekly schedule of things she is doing) and she has nothing listed for the next several months after the 16th march , which entitles “work” maybe she planned on leaving him or maybe she was just with him to hide her true identity because something tells me there is more to Amy that meet's the eye. She is definitely hiding something.

Jack has no idea what to do so goes to the hotel himself in search of her , he find's her phone rings a number which most likely is her work. When Jack asks to speak to Amy a woman says "Mr Krane is in a meeting right now" "I will have him return your call" Something tells me that they don't want Jack to find his wife and who she works for isn't really a real company. We then see Jack in a bar looking through Amy's phone there are loads of text's messages from "Unknown" one which says "We must wait until he's dead" could Amy be one of these "assassins" like the shady killer who killed the mother and son? Could her work be similar to what we saw the two men doing at the start? We also see him ring the Unknown persons number and all he can hear is Jazz music playing similar to the one Amy was listening to and dancing to at the beginning of the episode.

The episode doesn't focus on just Jack we see a 9 year old girl called Madison get given a number 9 card and a different symbol to the girl in the opening scene this time it was a white shell type thing. She was given it by the shady killer who seems to be linked with just about everything. If you receive a number 9 card you have to die? Since the killer pulled out a gun on the girl after giving her the card and the girl from the opening scene died after getting a card. He did opt not to shoot her which was strange as he didn't have a problem killing all those other people. The killer says to her "9 years goes fast doesn't it Marcus" which tells me that the number 9 card could stand for 9 years and this Marcus person is taking possession of children and switching between bodies. Who is Marcus? could this "Marcus" be what the men in black are looking for and why do they seem to be killing children? to try and find Marcus?

We then see her wake up in the middle of the night , run a bath and write a note. The scene was practically identical to the opening scene death , apart from she doesn't kill herself , she kills the cat instead. Well not her , but whoever is possessing her.
The shady killer receives a call from the girl now known as Marcus not Madison saying "you brought me back too early" going by that line there must be a plan in place or something , and the men in black must be working for Marcus , but then why did the killer want to kill Madison / Marcus. I am beyond confused. We do find out in the closing minutes that he is called Shepherd (well she call's him that) i still think that isn't his actual name. The last line of the episode Marcus / Madison says "what comes around goes around" which gave me shivers down my spine before seeing Marcus / Madison walk off out of her home. Where is she going?

Summary
Intruders was brilliant , although I had no clue to what is going on I am still intrigued to find out. It is a show that requires viewers to be patient and soon enough you will get your answers to the so many questions that the premiere left us with. The show was led by a talented cast John Simm and James Frain in particular were excellent. It blends mystery with a paranormal element , but you can tell there is a deeper , darker mystery than the show is letting on.The only thing I can fault with the show is that it may be a little too slow paced for some viewer's interests and it does throw you into the deep end straight away with possessions and random killings , but I suppose it is a challenging series something like "LOST" where you have to be patient in order to get answers. It was still one of the best new show's I have seen in a long time that I actually enjoyed. 8.5 /10
