In George R.R. Martin's series, Ser Denys was a member of the Night's Watch and the commander of the Shadow Tower for 33 years, who was up for the position of Lord Commander. And the role of Ser Denys Mallister will not be recast for the TV series after Murphy's death.
Game of Thrones' executive producers D.B. Weiss and David Benioff issued a statement on Murphy's passing, saying, "We will not be recasting J.J. Murphy. He was a lovely man, and the best Denys Mallister we could have hoped for. And now his watch is ended."

Mallister's being cast this season is interesting though! Roles like his that were not in the leaked cast additions are always fun. Plus, the more roles added that were not leaked, the more my hope rises for a few other roles to be cast this year!

ReplyDeleteI'm not sure anyone outside of production knows for sure.
ReplyDeleteHe had filmed 4 days I believe, so it is possible he had completed most of his scenes. If so they will use that footage and then have other roles fill in where his lines would have been needed in any other scenes.
If he had not completed enough scenes maybe they will scrap the role and have a different character take over Mallister's parts. In the books there were a handful of senor Night's Watch around, I'm sure they could just use one of them in Mallister's place.It would be fairly easy to work around if they feel they need to scrap the footage altogether.
