Chasing Life - Mid-Season Review: "Summer Win"
Aug 17, 2014
Chasing Life ReviewsI didn’t know what to expect from “Chasing Life.” As with any new show, it had the potential to be really interesting but that depended on the unknown plots, cast and tone. And it ran a risk. It’s a show about cancer, and viewers don’t want to watch something that brings them down. But “Chasing Life” has been the biggest surprise of the summer for me.
At the heart of the show’s success is its well-developed cast of characters. April Carver, the young ambitious 20-something who learns she has leukemia, is definitely the soul of the show. But the other characters are interesting in their own rights and many have their own engaging storylines. I love that the show focuses on all of them and not just April.
Typically in TV shows about young adults, the focus narrows in on them and their friends while the adults are simply an afterthought. Family is often left by the wayside. But “Chasing Life” offers a realistic portrayal of an interesting, vibrant family – one that smothers and supports, frustrates and uplifts. Just like in real life, April’s family makes mistakes but also stands by her when she needs it. That emphasis on family is appropriate in a crisis situation.
I’ve found April to be a pleasant, enjoyable main character. Most primary characters these days seem to be reckless and spontaneous and crazy. So it was almost a unique and challenging choice to write a central character who was responsible. Characters like this can run the risk of seeming too perfect, which easily translates into boring. But April is not perfect. She is someone who is struggling to make the right choices but doesn’t always make them. She is a person who looks out for everyone else. But that need to hold it together for her family has also become her vulnerability. Her quest to do everything right just emphasizes that she can’t. And that makes her relatable.
Actress Italia Ricci can take a lot of the credit for that. The young, relatively inexperienced actress has risen to the challenge of the role, showcasing a large range of emotions in April. In Ricci’s capable hands, April has become a layered, complex character who reveals different sides and different feelings all the time.
For the most part, the rest of the main casting is just as strong. Haley Ramm has been captivating as April’s sister who is struggling to find her own identity. Aside from April, her character has been the most intriguing to watch as Brenna has grown and developed the most since the first episode. She feels like a completely different person now with different priorities. In addition, Mary Page Keller easily personifies a frazzled but caring mother. Aisha Dee is fun as the charismatic best friend. And Scott Michael Foster adds a sparkling charm to the initially unpleasant Leo.
I must say, for me the character of Dominic hasn’t been nearly as dynamic as Leo. That was likely the intention. But because of that, the love triangle has not been as interesting as it could be. I like that none of the men has been demonized – that would be an easy cop-out. But the writers have certainly given more air time and interesting storylines to Leo. Although Dominic is nice, he hasn’t really had much to do. And sending him on a music trip to get him out of the picture felt like an obvious plot manipulation. But these kinds of misfires are relatively minor and infrequent.
When it comes to the show’s topic, the series has proven to be about more than just cancer. Sure, that’s a dominant part of the plot. But many interesting non-cancer-related twists have developed over the first half of the season: an unknown sister that the girls’ dad never told them about, an uncle who seemingly abandoned the family but was actually asked to leave, and now a history between the mom and uncle that seems to pre-date her marriage. April also spends a majority of her screen time dealing with normal things like relationships and family drama and trying to get ahead in her career. The stories are deftly balanced so as not to overwhelm you. And when cancer is the main focus, the writers have successfully infused serious moments with humor and truth.
I believe the series also presents a slice of life that anyone can relate to. It’s about dealing with all that life throws at you and learning how to “chase life” and fight when life throws you curveballs and tries to cut you down. Just substitute cancer with any other challenge and the theme is applicable to anyone.
It didn’t take long before this series quickly became a must-see for me. Throughout the summer I looked forward to it every week. After the mid-season finale cliffhanger where Leo calls April to tell her he has something important to share, I can’t wait for the rest of the season. (My guess is he has elected to have his potentially life-saving surgery after all.)
But wait we must. “Chasing Life” will return for a Christmas-themed episode in December as part of ABC Family’s “25 Days of Christmas” programming. The last 10 episodes of the season will air in early 2015.

Great review. I too loved the show and didn't know what to expect but was pleasantly surprised.
ReplyDeleteI also love April and how different she is from all those female leads that are always about the drama and the "oh I don't know what to do" when the solution is obvious, she has real things to deal with and does it to the best of her abilities.
I can't wait to see what's next!
I also wasn't sure this show would be a good fit on Abcfamily. But I was pleasantly surprised. Italia Ricci is awesome portraying April and the supporting cast is terrific. With the exception of brennas friend ford. She kinda sucks. This is a cancer show that isn't all about cancer. The storys are heartwarming and relatable. I'm very glad I got into the show. And its nice to see a show focused on a mid 20s aged women instead of a teenager. The whole cast and crew shouls be very proud of their work. Terrific show all around. Loved your review too by the way.
ReplyDeleteAwesom review I love this show it's nice to see that it doesn't matter what kind of illness you have that you don't let it bring you down that you fight to live your life the best way you can this show is amazing the lead actress make you feel for her and supporting cast is amazing I'm looking forward to second half of this season
ReplyDeleteGreat mid-season review, Tonya! I couldn't agree more. I've dealt with my share of ill, hospital-bound family members, why would I want to watch a show about it, especially when I am not their target demographic? The answer is simple: it's well done. You are right on about the characters and the tone, and even the one or two plot cliche`s they have used. For me it feels more real than a lot of family dramas. It almost feels like the drama is understated, if anything, sometimes. For me that's a good thing. I'm right there with you, it has been the biggest surprise of the summer for me too.
ReplyDeleteI have to admit that I started this show because I heard there are LGBT characters, but now I can proudly say that I love the show as a whole. I didn't expect to get hooked to the story and now I am! This show really make me appreciate life more. I think everyone did a great job. I love the family dynamic. From Grandma to little sister. And Beth, she is the best of friend and I am glad April has someone like her. I'm also very pleased at how well they handle the LGBT characters. This show is the only show I'm into this summer and I really hope they will get pick up for a second season.
ReplyDeleteThanks, Luana. I know - isn't it nice to have a smart female lead with real things to deal with? I understand exactly what you mean! I'm sad we'll have to wait until December to see what's next. Loved hearing your comments. Thank you. :)
ReplyDeleteThanks so much, Nicole. I loved your word "heartwarming." It's such a perfect description of the stories! It's good to be pleasantly surprised by a show, isn't it? And I agree it's nice to see a show about a mid 20s aged woman instead of a teen. So true. By the way, Ford sure isn't a very nice character. She ticks me off!!! Thanks so much for your great comments. Loved hearing them. :)
ReplyDeleteThanks, Aleana. It really is a good show, isn't it? Because of the things you mentioned - fighting to live your life the best way you can - I think the show is actually inspiring despite the illness. The lead actress definitely makes you feel for her. Totally agree with all your comments! Thanks for weighing in. Loved hearing your thoughts!
ReplyDeleteThanks so much for your comments, Halle. They do handle the LGBT characters well! And I'm so glad you're loving the show as a whole and the story. (Me, too!) What a cool thing to hear the show makes you appreciate life more. Really - how many TV shows can you say that about?! By the way, I want a best friend like Beth! I hope the show gets picked up for a second season, too. Fingers crossed! Loved hearing your thoughts and perspective. Thank you so much! :)
ReplyDeleteLoved your comments, Jack. Thank you. I loved your thought that the drama feels almost understated sometimes. I think that's really true - which, like you say, is a good thing. Because with peoples' real-life experiences with illnesses, we don't want to spend time watching a show all about that. Totally understand. But you're right - it feels more real than a lot of family dramas, which makes it interesting. I love your great insight. Thanks for sharing! :)
ReplyDeleteI never watched Chasing Life but I think I might go back and check it out. It sounds like something I would enjoy and I have enjoyed a lot of ABC Family shows in the past. Thanks for the overview and review Tonya!
ReplyDeleteI love this show. My son was diagnosed with leukemia last year, at the age of 2, so it hits close to home. My favorite characters are Leo and April and her BFF Beth.
ReplyDeleteApril's mom reminds me of my mother, a bit overprotective and somewhat dramatic. Can't wait for the next season.
I've really enjoyed it, Gavin. I think you should check it out! Thanks for the comments. :)
ReplyDeleteI am so sorry to hear about your son's diagnosis, Cristina. How is he doing? My thoughts are with you. I can imagine it would be tough to watch something that hits so close to home - but yet maybe nice in a way, too. I love that you're enjoying the show. I like the same characters you do! So cute that April's mom reminds you of yours. Love it! Thanks so much for commenting. I appreciate it!
ReplyDeleteI love the show. Because it shows what life is all about and it also a challenge. Please don't cancel it
ReplyDeleteHi Tonya, Ever since the summer finale of Chasing Life, I've been looking forward to the Christmas episode, which airs next Tuesday. Then recently, my wife was diagnosed with cervical cancer. She goes in for tests this week to see if it has spread and to where. It's far more serious if it has spread. The Dr.'s initial concern in mid-Nov. is part of the reason I said I wouldn't keep commenting on your TV reviews every week. I can't afford to alienate anyone again with too much conversation. Much like Chicken Little, I may actually have something important to say someday. And, if I have to be strong for somebody else again, I could use all the good Karma, friends, and even nice acquaintances I can get.
ReplyDeleteBack to Chasing Life. My first thought was, how can I keep watching this and Red Band Society? They remind me of past, and possible future real life struggles. But I've decided the hopefulness and good writing are a distraction from, rather than a reminder of real life. These days I am counting my blessings, and among them are connecting with you again over television, and these two shows about sick people that are far more uplifting than depressing. Plus, I have to see if April goes into remission and Leo gets the surgery. :) I'm planning to watch Chasing Life on Dec 9. I'm still looking forward to it. How about you?
Jack, I am so very sorry to hear about your wife's cancer diagnosis. How awful. Did she find out any more? I hope she's going to be okay. My thoughts are with you. I am sure that has made this holiday season extra hard for you.
ReplyDeleteAfter that kind of news, I understand questioning if you wanted to keep watching these shows that deal with cancer. I would do the same thing. We all want a break from life's toughness when we watch TV. But I'm glad to hear you've felt the hopefulness would be a distraction rather than a reminder of real life. That's wonderful. (Of course if that ever changes, there's no need to torture yourself just for entertainment value!) You have such a positive attitude. How kind of you to mention me in your blessings - and these shows. Yes, I am also looking forward to Chasing Life and the Christmas episode. In fact it's funny you wrote this message now because I just interviewed Italia Ricci about the Christmas episode. I will be posting the article online tomorrow morning. She gives a preview of the episode (without spoilers).
I wish you and your wife the best in this journey. I'm praying for you.
Tonya, thank you for your kind words, your thoughts and your prayers. They are very much appreciated. I decided to continue to post here, as it is an older thread and might be slightly less public. Without a private way to converse, I'll be a bit guarded. We haven't told her elderly parents yet, until we know exactly the prognosis. She went in yesterday for a biopsy and a chest x-ray. We don't get results until next Wed. or Thurs. I know Kari is concerned, but she is trying not to let it consume her. I'm just trying to be supportive. It could be very straight forward, or it could be much more serious. I think it's the not knowing that is so unnerving. But we've decorated for Christmas, and we are going on with life, kind of like April did for as long as she could in the show. Thanks again for your interest and compassion. I'll keep you informed when we know something. Have a great weekend.
ReplyDeleteThis is indeed very personal. Sorry for continuing the post here. (But like you say at least it is an older thread.) Kari sounds very strong and I'm sure you are being very supporting! I am hoping and praying for the best for her. I'm sure the not knowing is unnerving. But you have a great attitude as you try to go on with life and stay positive. Yes, keep me informed. All my best.
ReplyDeleteHi Tonya,
ReplyDeleteIt took a little longer to get a firm diagnosis and treatment plan, but we got pretty good news today. The cancer appears to be localized in the cervix. They think they can remove it all with a fairly minor surgery. She may not even need chemo or radiation, but they won't know for sure until the surgery, which is December 30th. No New Year's Eve parties for us, but that is a small price to pay if everything turns out well. I hesitate to be too optimistic, but it would be such a wonderful relief if it were that straight forward. Thank you so much for thinking of us and being willing to let me confide in you. If it's okay, I'll update you after the surgery. Thanks again. :)
Jack, I'm so happy to hear about the good news. I hope their projections are correct and minor surgery is all that's needed. How wonderful that would be! Yes, New Year's Eve parties are nothing compared with her health. Please keep me updated. My thoughts and prayers are still with you both!
ReplyDeleteHey Tonya,
ReplyDeleteKari's surgery finally happened. It took well over a week to get the replacement part and make sure the device was ready to go, but yesterday afternoon they did the procedure. The cancer was a bit more extensive than they thought, but everything went very well and they think they got all the cancer. They will biopsy what they removed, and she will have another pap test and blood work in six weeks. If all those results are positive, she'll have a clean bill of health, and no further treatment will be needed. Though Kari was anxious and even frustrated with the delay, I think it was well worth the wait. She is very lucky, I think. Thanks for letting me share.
I never asked if you liked the Christmas episode of Chasing Life. I enjoyed it. I thought it was pretty good. I am definitely looking forward to the winter premiere in less than two weeks.
I know you have a busy month ahead, with Sundance. I hope you have a great time. I won't be attending any screenings this year, but I'll be looking for your articles and tweets.
Hey Jack, just now reading this. Thanks for sharing how Kari's surgery went. I'm glad she finally had it. I'm sorry to hear it was a bit more extensive than first thought, but happy to hear they think they got it all. That is wonderful. Just wonderful. I'm sure she is relieved to have it done. I'm thinking of her and pray all goes well moving forward & she gets a clean bill of health very soon! Thanks for letting me know.
ReplyDeleteI did enjoy the Christmas episode & am also looking forward to the winter premiere - now less than a week away!
Yes, I'm already gearing up for Sundance. It's going to be very busy. But it should be fun, too. Thanks a lot!
