    Atlast Finally!!! Felicity Smoak centric episode. I am excited.


    *SPOILERS*
    My concern is should this be 305? From the spoilers we know Oliver meets Malcolm in 304. He may or may not come to know of Malcolm's influence on Thea. After such a high drama episode the very next episode is about Felicity. Won't Oliver want to confront Malcolm or get Thea back?


    This was the same thing they did in season 2. They introduced Slade Wilson in the "three ghosts". After that a bunch of episodes concentrating on other characters and no continuation on Slade story. I was asking to the screen every episode where is Slade? I don't want to ask where is Malcolm and Thea this season.


    This episode should have come before Malcolm and Thea intro this season. This all depends on what Mama Smoak brings to Starling city?

    So you would be happy if she remains to be a character with no back story and no contact other than Team Arrow? Every anti Felicity person always points out she has no back story. Now that the show is giving her one you guys still complain. And its one and half seasons later not three and of which half a season she was not a regular.

    You don't know what fan service is do you? Fanservice is for example having a character whose female revealing reveal or tight clothing simply to show off assets or any Oliver shirtless scene. Or having Oliver propose to Felicity with no build up or anything. This is character growth and development it has a purpose.

    I always liked the character of Felicity. I might be an olicity shipper if you want(i don't really see chemistry between Oliver and Laurel), but one complain i always had was that Felicity was too much "Team Arrow dependant".


    Now they are going to give Felicity a life outside of Team Arrow, wich is both great for the character, the show and the fans.


    I read the Green Arrow comics and i know that purists want Oliver and Dinah together, but the show wouldn't work with that because when you put Amell and Cassidy and make them have romantic banter it's like having a duck interact with a stick of wood. Sometimes actors don't have chemistry. Cassidy had great chemistry with Padalecki and Ackles in SPN or Crawford on Gossip Girl, but this time she wasn't lucky.


    I really like Oliver and Laurel as friends. The Olicity type of chemistry remainded me of couples like Logan and Veronica(V Mars) or Jeff and Annie(Community), in wich none of those were suposed to happen but the actors really clicked.


    People should let the show be it's own thing, apart from the comics. I love Batman's comics and i love Nolan's TDK Trilogy, the thing is, Nolan's movies have nothing to do with the caped crusader beside of some villains, it's way too different. But i know how to separate the two things.


    Let the show be what it is... All the Felicity hate is 'cause of that.

    So what they waited three seasons? At least they made us anticipate it for two years, unlike any Laurel centric episode, which people just do not want to see or have no interest in whatsoever. But that wouldn't be fanservice because "OMG she must get storylines because she's a comic character, she ends up with Oliver because comics!!" Yadda yadda yadda...

    Someone claimed that DC fans were angry because they thought the title meant that Felicity will become Oracle, and they want that alter-ego to belong exclusively to Barbara. I personally haven't seen any such backlash. If it's true, that's a lame reason to change the title, especially to something so cheesy.

    I am still gun-shy because of second half of season 2. They scrambled around and episodes had no continuity. I kept anticipating to see Slade, Isabel and Roy on my screen.

    Now introducing Malcolm and Thea(if they do) and then very next episode going completely different direction is hinky to me. It all depends on who is the villain this episode.

    This title is also a nod to comics actually. There is a bunch of "The Secret Origin of *****" out there about different characters even if their origin is not a secret. That way this title is comic book "fan service". I am just tired of the word fan service and fan pandering. People use it unnecessarily and often now.

    In a way I am glad the title is not Oracle and I hope they will not call her "Oracle". I can't hear more fan pandering comments.

    Some people will just hate Felicity no matter what. What's funny is that the only people I've seen hate on Felicity are the ones who love Laurel and/or are comic purists (not saying that everyone who hates felicity are laurel fans, this is just my experience). There's a double standard that's been set amongst this crowd. They'll complain that Felicity isn't important/is a mary sue because she has no backstory, but the second she gets one it's fanservice. I really hate that word.


    Then again, the same goes for Laurel. There are some fans who will hate her no matter what. what's best is for us to just ignore these people.

    Because DC fans were angry about hinting towards Felicity becoming another oracle like character like Barbra Gordon, the writers changed the title ... Wouldn't that be 'fan-servicing' to the comic book fans like mac? LOL Poor mac, he's essentially arguing against himself...


    ETA: Now I'm doubting myself, the op is a comic fan right? or am I wrong? oh well. regardless, 'fan-servicing' can go both ways. Those little easter-eggs (aka Harley Quinn) the writers love to put in certain episodes can be considered fan-servicing.

    It actually is... She was supposed to be a wink to Firestorm's stepmom(a character named Felicity Smoak that ran a computer business), but the producers, actors and Warner saw the chemistry between her and Stephen Amell and asked her back.


    This is a Veronica Mars/Logan Echolls or Jeff Winger/Annie Edison, in wich the direction of the characters wasn't planed but done since the show progressed as a response of the main actor/actress having better chemistry with these sencondary characters/recurring guest stars than the other main actor(Katie Cassidy on Arrow, Teddy Dunn on V Mars or Gillian Jacobs on Community, just to give more recent examples).

    I don't have any problem with people disliking Felicity. Look at the poster above @Patty. She said she is not interested and not watching. That is absolutely fine. If it is a Laurel centric episode I will not be interested too. But I will watch because I love Arrow too much.


    The problem is calling Felicity a mary sue and a character with no substance all these time just because she does not have a backstory (forget whatever else she did on the show) and then once the back story is given it's fan service.

    I am not sure if mac is a comic book fan, I know he is a John Barrowman/Malcolm fan. He hates bad acting in Arrow which includes Caity Lotz, CH and SA. Don't know his stand about KC or Laurel. He absolutely hates all kinds of shipping and thinks show has fallen to all kinds of fan servicing. Sorry @mac if I am wrong about you.


    I was just confused why he thought the change in title was fan servicing. I also think the title is super cheesy until I googled "secret origins of" and came to know its a comic book thing.

    It kinda amuses me that they hired a blond to play Felicity's mom, when Felicity says she dyes her hair. So is her mom a natural blond and she's always been jealous, or did she get the idea to dye it from her? LOL, either way, despite a sucky title, I'm excited for them to finally give Felicity a backstory and flesh her out like an actual character.

    I would've liked the title to remain "Oracle" because I enjoyed the guessing game of what it meant. I don't think it was going to refer to her actually getting that alter-ego, but maybe it was her code name in the hacker community, or she knew someone named Barbara as another little DC easter egg. Oh well.


    I can't say I don't ever use the terms "fan pandering" and "fan service" - for example, when the Nikita writers had Alex and Owen develop a romance in Season 4, boy did I rage - but they're definitely being overused. People have to remember that the whole POINT of shows/movies is to entertain the viewers, so of course their feedback will be taken into consideration to some degree. The creative teams involved just have to find an ideal middle ground that incorporates both their own artistic vision and the viewers' wishes. I don't have a problem with Felicity becoming a much bigger character than initially planned, I think it's worked naturally enough and she actually brings some much needed levity and humor to the show. I do think some of the writing for Olicity near the end of Season 1 and then in Season 2 was influenced by fans (pretty blatant scenes like Oliver carrying her in his arms in that Merlyn Industries elevator shaft), but I'm not against the idea of that couple in principle, just against the execution so far. Hopefully in S3, they're able to write them better because they're no longer juggling multiple ships in an attempt to string everyone along.

    They definitely suffered from an overstuffed canvas in the latter half of S2, as we've discussed before. It was quantity over quality with all the different DC characters, organizations and plots they brought in. I hope they write S3 in a more relaxed way and don't juggle as many plots simultaneously, allowing them to develop each one fully. It's a positive sign that every character seems to have his/her own plot this season because in S2, there were main cast members shafted in favor of recurring or guest characters. They need to remember that the core cast is what keeps us coming back and keep the focus on them, with supporting characters being used in the appropriate limited capacity.

    I agree. All the spoilers are highly promising and I have high expectations from season 3. Lack of news or any spoilers on Laurel storyline is a bit disturbing but it might be too big to tease. The show should always focus on developing their regulars first, all the recurring characters should be used to improve their journey. Not the other way around.

    When I heard the term Oracle I thought Barbara Gordon is coming to Felicity's MIT episode maybe as her room mate or mentor. I never for once thought Felicity would be given the title of Oracle. But then i saw internet. Anyway its changed now so it doesn't matter. And personally I don't think they changed the title due to fan reaction. I think it has something to do with Felicity Smoak debuting in GA comics in october.


    I am not saying fan service is not a thing or it never happens. My problem with Arrow fandom is anything regarding Felicity / Olicity is called fan service. I agree there were some cheesy on the nose scenes with Olicity in season 2 (I didn't find any problem with season 1). But there were cheesy scenes which was unnecessary for the narrative for every other character and relationships on this show. What about Thea/Roy kiss in season 1 finale? Thea/Roy make up break up in one episode. What about Laurel saying I know you in my bones, or her getting a jacket, her firing a bow. Oliver/Laurel ice cream scene in season 1. There are lot more. I could call all these scenes as fan servicing. But people will always attack Felicity/Olicity fandom because they are loud and a small minority of them are obnoxious.



    Some people act like there was no indication of attraction between Oliver/Felicity from the beginning. But my take on them was that they always had a flirty relationship and an attraction towards each other. And it was not one sided as many say. The truth is if they had not shown these scenes which depicted growing attraction between them by these scenes (cheesy as it may be) how will we believe when Oliver wants to date Felicity in season 3 premiere.

    Agreed. I just meant that it's probably just best to ignore the people who don't have an open mind about these things. I'm tired of all the hypocrisy when it comes to the female characters on the show. Like how people are against criticizing Laurel's looks when they themselves bash Sara's looks or vice versa for example. Or even this hypocrisy with Felicity (which is extremely prevalent in boards like this and imdb).


    Ever since I came into this fandom I've just started hating the words Mary-Sue, fan-service and fan-pandering because almost every time I see it, it's being misused in order to make one's point seem more valid when it actually doesn't. It's just frustrating :/ Calling Felicity a mary-sue is a false statement, calling anything involving Felicity fan-pandering/servicing is generally a false statement too. People just need to get over the fact that she's one of the show's main characters and that there will always be some time in the show that's dedicated to her.

    I too thought that Oracle would've been someone who mentored Felicity, not an actual hint towards Felicity being Oracle. Then again, I never really had a problem with Felicity being a version of Oracle because it's only a title, it doesn't entail the legacy that comes with it. But if the change in title had to be a reaction to the fans, it would be a reaction to the comic fans not the Felicity fans (not entirely mutually exclusive). I always thought the change in title was a DC issue for some reason...


    I can understand why people never saw Oliver's attraction and feelings towards Felicity because it was extremely subtle (apart from that time he killed the count). Hopefully they explore Oliver's attraction towards Felicity in the third season because we already know Felicity is attracted to Oliver.


    I think that the subtlety of Oliver's feelings towards Felicity is the reason why a lot of people were so shocked about the whole 'I love you'. But after that moment, when you look back, you can see the clues (especially in the final 3 episodes).


    But yeah, I don't understand why a couple who've grown from strangers-acquaintances-Boss/Employee-friends-partners/best-friends is viewed as impossible to ever grow beyond that as a romantic couple. It isn't impossible in the real world and doesn't have to be impossible in Arrow. It's not fan-pandering when you've seen this gradual growth in their relationship.

    I should clarify that it's not their feelings for each other that I had a problem with, it's just the cringeworthy (to me) scenes we got between them that I felt were the writers throwing a bone to shippers, for example:
    - The aforementioned scene in the elevator shaft.
    - Felicity telling Oliver on comms "It feels good to have you inside me".
    - Oliver landing on top of Felicity after he saved her from a mine on Lian-Yu, and her commenting "You're really sweaty,"
    - Oliver's jealousy over Felicity/Barry, followed by being an utter douche to Felicity in 2x10 and blaming her of being off her game because she's thinking of Barry.
    - All of the longing stares.
    - All of the almost-kiss scenes: the one in the end of 2x10 after he apologizes for being an ass, the one in the end of 2x23 after they lock Slade up...
    - Felicity giving Oliver that whole "Go save Thea" speech - why wouldn't Diggle or Sara make the same point?


    To me, there have just been a lot of occasions where the writing of this budding romance didn't feel natural, but more like the writers were cognizant of what a large group of fans wanted, and were constantly dangling the Olicity carrot in front of them. Since we know now that they're committed to doing Olicity in S3, I hope they go all in and stop with the endless teases, because in my opinion those don't make for good writing.

    While I agree with some of the points you've made, I feel like I just saw some things differently than you (which is perfectly fine). I guess it's all a matter of perspective.


    -Elevator shaft - I quite liked this scene. It didn't really highlight their relationship per se, moreso it highlighted Felicity's lack of filter sometimes.
    -"it feels good..." - yeah this was a cringeworthy scene for me too. It was not even subtle
    -Oliver landing on top of Felicity - It's not unnatural for him to save Felicity, and to be fair, Oliver was really sweaty :p When I saw that part, I didn't see it as a hint towards a romantic relationship but as a solidification of their partnership. Oliver will always try to save Felicity and Felicity will always look out for Oliver.
    -Oliver's jealousy - I didn't mind seeing Oliver's jealousy. It didn't really come out of nowhere imo. He was an ass to Barry and Felicity in those two episodes and I liked what happened because of said jealousy. Oliver can be possessive and I liked that he was called out on his shit. I saw it as growth for Oliver and a possible beginning of Oliver realizing his feelings for Felicity.
    -Longing stares - Damn I'm a sucker for them :p I don't think they overdo it, but I certainly would get annoyed if they do. I guess I'm immune to these because growing up I used to watch hindi tv shows with my mom and there were a lot of longing stares. I mean A LOT. Almost every episode of any romantic show.
    -almost-kiss scenes - I didn't think they almost kissed after they locked Slade up. I think they almost kissed when Oliver said I love you. After they locked Slade up it was mostly Oliver trying to (probably) repress his feelings for Felicity. 2x10, I don't really remember this scene but all I remember was that this time it was Oliver comforting Felicity. I think that their proximity had nothing to do with Oliver wanting to kiss Felicity (or vice versa), more like Oliver wanting to imbue a sense of comfort with his proximity.
    -go save Thea- I think it's perfectly fine for any member of team arrow to implore Oliver to save Thea. I also think it was appropriate for Felicity to do it because she's the one who keeps him in check with the whole 'no killing rule'. So it's only fitting that she tells Oliver to do whatever it takes. It's obvious Sara couldn't be the one to tell Oliver this because of their conflicting views on killing and how Oliver told sara not to kill Helena when she took Laurel hostage (it wouldn't really make sense for Sara). With Digg, it would make sense for him to tell Oliver too. but it wouldn't have the same poetic justice you know?


    Lol this got long, sorry Alex :p I feel as though Oliver and Felicity's budding relationship is the most natural thing about the show. I understand why you probably don't feel the same way, and like I said before, it all depends on your perspective. I don't think that the writers ever wrote Oliver/Felicity as a romantic couple, I always saw them being written as friends until they became more in the finale. Hopefully now that the writers fully intend on making their relationship a romantic one, we'll see less blatant hinting and see them grow in a more natural fashion (for the people who think that their build hasn't been natural). :)

    I kind of agree and disagree with you here. Some scenes were awkward for me too in season 2

    -The elevator shaft scene is still one of my favourite scene because that was Felicity without a filter and she was crushing on Oliver so hard

    -The casino scene. I am torn about this. I always laugh out loud at Felicity’s facial expressions in this scene and Oliver’s response but felt terribly embarrassed for her.

    -Personally I hated you are sweaty scene. That was really unnecessary. I also hated Felicity commenting on his algebra results in the same episode. It was not funny to me at all. I was like tone it down guys. It is no longer funny. But I liked the coconut dialogue at the island though.

    -I completely disagree with you on 2x10. That was a milestone episode for Oliver imo. This was the first time after Digg and his fight in season 1 one of his partners leaving him for a long period of time. When dig left it was only for one week. Oliver realised the importance of both Felicity and Digg in this episode and yes he acted like a spoilt child but I did get where he was coming from too.

    -Longing stares.. hmm the only one I had a huge problem with was the one in three ghosts where Felicity asks him to promise her he will come back. That was for Barry’s benefit but ugh... unnecessary for that episode.

    -2x10 nah... not almost kiss I don’t think so at least after all he did say Barry was dreaming about her. An unresolved sexual tension yes. For me the blatant almost kiss of Olicity was in 2x22 when Felicity asks Oliver to not accept things. I was like “kiss, kiss” to the screen. 2x23 scene in the island – I didn’t see an almost kiss there at all. I felt sorry for Felicity and was a bit confused by Oliver’s saintly smile there.

    -I think there was a reason why it was Felicity who said to Oliver “go save Thea”. Diggle and Sara are both soldiers and heroes like Oliver. Their first instinct is to go and attack themselves and assist Oliver in the field. For them letting Oliver go alone to a life threatening situation is very difficult as they are used to guarding his back. Where as Felicity is the member of Team Arrow who stays behind when Oliver goes everyday to save the city. Also he is the one who asked Oliver in episode 1 to find another way instead of killing. So she telling him to go and do whatever it takes to save Thea has value imo.



    I personally hated the fantasy island comment in 3 ghosts too. But I saw lot of reviewers especially men in youtube who called it the best dialogue of the episode *rolls eyes*. Personally I think writers of this show tries a bit too hard to make Felicity funny. Its a hit most of the time but misses are building up.


    I am not saying writing is anyway perfect for this couple. Same can be said about every other romance in this show except for Walter/Moira. All kinds of CW cheesiness gets involved. The writers of this show does not really know to write romance period. And some scenes are there to make shippers happy. But to say the whole show is reduced to only fan servicing is bitterness speaking because the show is not going the way they anticipated.

    You are from India!!!! OMG hindi tv shows and their longing stares. LOL. It takes half an episode for one stare to finish. The heroine tripping and hero catching her is the best though.

    I'm half Indian! I actually learned most of my Hindi from tV serials and movies lol Are you from India too? If not how the hell can you stand the TV shows? They're entertaining but they're so stupid 90% of the time :p I can't help but yell at them to just stop staring at each other, we get it, you're in love but can't be together blah blah blah. So you understand why I'm immune to the longing stares!


    My favorite trope is how the heroine's sari gets caught on the guy's watch or whatever which leads to sexy staring time :p


    For those of you who don't know staring is the equivalent to sex on hindi tv shows. Don't even get me started on hugs and cheek kisses.

    I'm a South Indian currently residing in middle east. My mother tongue is not hindi. When I was young we only used to have one television channel Doordarshan with hindi programming. So learned hindi very fast :) We had great programs then though. I can't stand hindi tv shows after 2004. I think that was the last time when I saw a good television program in hindi. Nowadays every show is watchable until the romance go full steam after that we will be forced to switch of tv. I stopped watching it completely few years before.


    Alex is talking about almost kisses. If only he saw one hindi tv show he would say Olicity is equivalent to Shakespeare.

    That's awesome! I can't say I've seen any south indian shows. I have zero clue about Tamil or Telegu :p But yeah, the romance on Arrow is basically considered a masterpiece in comparison to Hindi TV serials. I think it has to do with the fact that a new episode comes out everyday instead of every week, thus the quality suffers. I tend to stick to western shows now lol

    I am from Kerala. So its Malayalam. I have never been a fan of malayalam tv shows. Never saw any. My mum does though. I have completely given up on Indian TV now. I love the movies though. Hindi, Tamil, Malayalam... lot of good movies are there.


    Once you see the western shows even the dubbed chinese/Japanese shows its difficult to appreciate Indian television. The production values and story telling are so great in western shows.

    So true. I love hindi movies, but the tv shows are utter trash nowadays. OH I went to kerala once when I was little. We stayed in one of the houseboats. I liked to call them Golden Gyaradoses because they looked like the pokemon. Don't judge.

    I feel as though watching hindi tv shows has made me more lenient on the other shows I watch. To be fair, Arrow (as well as the romance bits) could be much worse than it is now. Maybe not as bad as Laurel/Oliver (imo), but worse.

    I think Arrow would benefit well if they don't concentrate much on romance. Romance is necessary but it should not be the forefront like they did with Oliver/Sara. There is no need for melodramatic love stories here we only need a sprinkle. Stick with one lady for Oliver and just go with it. Tension should come because of the life and death situations and villains.

    Agreed. I feel like they forced Sara and Oliver's relationship and it was made worse when they put it on the forefront. It seems like the writers are going your route with Oliver not having any other love interests this season.


    I've mentioned this before, but I honestly wish that if they were going down the route of Oliver/Felicity, I wouldn't mind seeing them have a Tammy/Eric Taylor-esque relationship like on Friday Night Lights. It would leave a lot of room for all the action and villains.


    But this is the CW and I guess it's too much to ask for a healthy adult relationship :/
