I stopped watching Grey's Anatomy when Izzie's character was written into the ground and I continue not to watch it, because Shonda (even after so many years) won't let Katherine Heigl come back to finish her and Alex storyline.
ReplyDeleteAnd I stopped watching NCIS, because of Ziva and I don't have enough time.
If it wasn't for Ginnifer Goodwin I would stop watching OUAT.
Stopped watching Glee when every week was basically the same episode (back in S2). Stopped watching TVD, OUAT, The Following and a few others this year.
ReplyDeleteI had to stop watching Hannibal when they didn't warn for a second episode this season with a long stroboscopic effect. I have photosensitive epilepsy. It's too dangerous if they're not going to warn for it. It's also uncomfortable to watch the damage to my occipital lobe become their excuse for Will and Miriam to murder people too.
ReplyDeleteDefine recent years.
ReplyDeleteAw schucks...beat me to it :-)
ReplyDeleteGlee and Vampire Diaries (Instead I've started re-watching Buffy and Angel, and OMG this show is and will always be better written than VD by far, even bad episodes of Buffy are 10 tens better than VD)
ReplyDeleteSupernatural and TVD
ReplyDeleteWell, there have been a lot of shows that I only watched briefly and then decided that I didn't like them. Sleepy Hollow and The Walking Dead come to mind, in that regard. As far as shows go that I have watched for at least one season: Under the Dome, The Vampire Diaries, the Originals (will not resume watching in S2), BatB (this season), Revenge (after S1) and Nikita (in S3).
ReplyDeleteStopped watching Vikings , Bates Motel and Mistresses. This season i have dropped Dominion and Im considering dropping Under The Dome as its just seems like an unnecessary second season.
ReplyDeleteI find it very hard to get into a new program , it has to be very good for me to watch it for the whole season , i don't just continue watching something just because i have started it.
8 Dropped: Atlantis, The Following, The Originals (i only tried the first 3 eps of TVD), Once Upon A Time, Law & Order: SVU, From Dusk Till Dawn, Under the Dome & In The Flesh. Though i may give those last 3 a second chance. I have been considering dropping Teen Wolf (ducks for cover lol).
ReplyDeleteWhy would anyone need to vote for 3 options in this poll?
ReplyDeleteI was about to ask the very same thing.
ReplyDeleteNot sure why it says that, but it won't actually let you select 3.
ReplyDeleteGossip Girl and 90210 before they were cancelled, The Vampire Diaries, Pretty Little Liars, Revenge, Glee.
ReplyDeleteI didn't count, but quite a few, sadly. Definitely more than ever before.
ReplyDeleteVampire Diaries - Use to be really good but its just to silly now, too many characters introduced.
ReplyDeletethe Blacklist - It started well and I love James but just did not like where it was going.
the Voice - got bored, same old same old.
Scandal - I loved the first two seasons but the third was awful IMO.
Under The Dome - The first two episodes of season 2 were bad IMO. I have lost interest.
New Girl - started getting way too annoying for my taste.
Let's see...Bones, Supernatural, L&O: SVU, Under the Dome, Doctor Who...Maybe Arrow next season depending on where they go with certain things.
ReplyDeleteLet's see. Graceland, Arrow, Mentalist, Supernatural, The Musketeers, 2 Broke Girls, The Vampire Dramas, Saving Hope (I didn't really like it, I watched it for Daniel Gillies, but it became so stupid I had to quit) and The 100 (watched first season, but I don't plan to continue), but I have three episodes test for new shows, so I count only shows which passed it. If I were to count series I gave up after three episodes, that number would be enormous.
ReplyDeleteBones, OUAT, Modern Family, Hawaii 5-0, Sleepy Hollow. Close to giving up: Vampire Diaries, Under The Dome, maybe Arrow.
ReplyDeleteSo I'm probably one of the few who haven't dropped any TV shows, I'm a bit too attached to characters, that's probably why.
ReplyDeleteStopped watching Grey's Anatomy because it got boring. NCIS LA - Kenzei and Deeks sleeping together. Burn Notice, Dexter, (Lost interest because of the way the story was going), Walking Dead...just got bored and never watched it again) The Following. REALLY close to dropping Supernatural (sneaks for season 10 put that decision really really close. I'm not counting shows that didn't really grab me. There a still a few others I'm forgetting.
ReplyDeleteBeauty and the Beast this year, wooden acting and bad writing. PLL last year, just same thing over and over. Glee in season 2, Rizzoli and Isles, can not stand the mom or Isles, loved Rizzoli and tried to stay with it. OUAT in season 2, to silly for me. Graceland tried 8 eps at different times, just can not connect with any of the characters. Secret Circle for the same reason, did not care what happened to any of them. Am still recording Salem but there are 9 I have not watched.
ReplyDeleteI don't remember how many, but Supernatural is the big one; I used to love it through seasons 1-5, and then after the 6 one I felt like it wasn't the same, and by the 7th season I dropped it.
ReplyDeleteRecently I dropped Falling Skies and I'm about to drop Under The Dome. Also I dropped Mike &Molly on its 4th (and dreadufl) season, when it was all about Molly and nothing about the rest of the characters.
I used to watch Two and a Half Men too, but I had to stop. The Following bored me to death after episode 5 on its first season so I also dropped it.
If this season doesn't shape things up with New Girl, I'm dropping it.
So I have dropped quite a few
If I invest in a show past 2 seasons I try to stick with it till the end but dexter, supernatural, CSI & psych I couldn't stand no more. Others I gave up on were breaking bad after 4 eps (yes I know I should stick with it cause it gets amazing & I still might give it a 2nd chance later) sleepy hollow (don't know why I just can't get into it) & under the dome.
ReplyDeleteI may drop Bones, Homeland, criminal minds & New girl this year.
Well, I still liked The Good Wife when I stopped because the show kept getting preempted. I got frustrated trying to find it. Some day I'll get the DVDs of s4 and 5.
ReplyDeleteJust stopped watching Falling Skies.
I stopped watching Person of Interest in the middle of last season.
I don't know what I'm going to do about Elementary. Episodes are piling up in my DVR queue, and I
am tending not to watch them. Will I return or will I not? don't know.
I stopped watching OUAT after season 2.
I dropped Continuum around ep nine because the stories got too confusing and crazy. But I ended up going back to it and finishing this season. The last few eps were better. I am constantly on the verge of dropping Vampire Diaries. I am so sick of the bad writing. And I feel the same about Walking Dead, too. It's a shame. Some shows are only good in their very first seasons and then the writing just goes down the drain.
ReplyDeleteTo this day, I still wish Buffy and Angel weren't canceled. It's been alot of years, and I still miss those shows.
ReplyDeleteThe Vampire Diaries (S4), Homeland (S3), True Blood (S5), The Walking Dead (S3), Suits (S3), Bates Motel (S2), OUAT (S2), Dexter (S5, all episodes watched after that were hate-watching), The Office (S8, only returned for the finale)
ReplyDeleteI won't count The Following since my run with it last six episodse, I usually count as drops shows that I watched more than one season. My drop rate is around 25%.
Bones, House and NCIS are the main ones for me (though I would go back to NCIS occasionally if I'm looking to fill time). I dropped Criminal Minds for a few years as well, but recently went back and watched it, it's not as good as it was in the earlier seasons, but I'll keep up with it for the moment.
ReplyDelete3. The Vampire Diaries, Awkward and Supernatural.
ReplyDeleteGossip Girl (S4) - After the horrible S3 the show was ruined and S4 didn't seem to get any better.
ReplyDelete90210 (S3) - I hated Annie and her relationship with Liam so much that I quit watching.
Nikita (S2) - After the reveal Michael had a kid and that annoying character Sean.
Grey's Anatomy - I was a casual watcher but after Lexie died I was done.
Scandal (S2) - After everyone got really really stupid and Olivia lost her self respect.
Game of Thrones (S2) - I just couldn't stomach all the rapes and the gratuitous violence against women.
Once Upon a Time (S3) - The show has jumped the shark and it has become incredible stupid and predictable. Also it lost everything that made it special in the first place.
Teen Wolf - After Allison died I just lost interest.
Pretty Little Liars (S3) - This show is a mess. The mystery became annoying because of the lack of answers and the fact it become more and more convoluted. Also I hate Ezria and their "epic" love.
I stopped watching Once Upon a time after 4 episodes of season 3 and have so far no desire to return. It's become repetitive, predictable and seems just to be pandering to fans now rather than telling a good story. I still keep up to date and will maybe go back and watch it again as there are still things I like but overall, I've lost faith in it.
ReplyDeleteNot sure I remember all, but Hawaii50 (S3), Vampire Diaries (S4, I think)/The Originals (S1), Suburgatory somewhere in S2, Bates Motel (S1), Revolution (S1), OUAT (S2)
ReplyDeleteI'm only including shows I watched full seasons of before stopping or the list would be far too long.
ReplyDeleteI listed the last season I completed in parenthesis.
ABC
Castle (S3) - Got bored of the same old thing
Pretty Little Liars (S3) - - going in a circle
Switched at Birth (s1)
The Fosters (s1)
CBS
Blue Bloods (S3) - Still like the show and may catch up.... some day.
Criminal Minds (S7)- Cases got stale and they explored personal lives of the team.
Hawaii Five-O (s2) - Show lost it's footing
Mike and Molly (s3) - Hated the Molly-centric changes
Two and a Half Men (s8) - No Charlie, no viewership
CW
Vampire Diaries (S3) - Got bored of the same old thing
Supernatural (s3 then restarted and stopped again after S6) - Hated the angels etc..
HBO
True Blood (S4) -Wanted to stop after Season 2, but forced myself for two more years
SyFy
Lost Girl (S2) - Boy the show went downhill fast!
BBC
Doctor Who (s4) - Cannot stand Matt Smith
Oh I forgot about Falling Skies... Oh well, it is easily forgotten! XD
ReplyDeleteI'm very close to not watching Person of Interest next year... I hear ya.
Stopped watching Vampire Diaries mid season 4, Supernatural a couple EPs into season 8, Bones season 7 ( I think), PLL season 3, Glee after season 3, Revenge after season 2, Grey's Anatomy after Mark & Lexie died, Game of Thrones mid season 4 (its straying farther from the BKS) and Falling Skies current season.
ReplyDeleteShows that I abandoned during or right after their first season: The Secret Circle, Hart of Dixie, Agents of Shield & Revolution
Archer (FX) - But I might catch up with that...
ReplyDeleteThe Fosters- didn't begin watching when new season staryed.
ReplyDeleteSwitched at birth- didn't watch ens of last season or start of new season.
Thays pretty much it, all the others I still watch. About to give up on Under the dome cause thia season is a little out there and thwy killed Angie off.
H50's best season was season 2 imo.
ReplyDeleteCouldn't stand Crisis. Think that's the only show I've really given up. I tried to give up Revolution after the season 2 premeire but went back to it (for some unbeknown reason).
ReplyDeleteOnly happened once with me with 90210
ReplyDeleteI stopped Grey's Anatomy after season 4 or 5. I stopped watching The Good Wife somewhere in season 3 (but I plan on catching up), I stopped watching Castle after season 3 (again, plan on catching up sometime), and I stopped The 100 after episode 5.
ReplyDeleteOther than that I have stuck to all my shows. I tend to be a long time investor, because I do think that some series get better with age and I'm also interested in seeing what the whole work is really about. I'm always curious of TV series endings and how that changes the beginnings...
I agree, and Season 3 was just terrible in comparison to me.
ReplyDeleteMore than just the loss of quality though, I just got bored of the procedural element. I tend to lose interest in procedural shows after 2 or 3 years.
Under the Dome (S1) - I don´t know how I even got through the first season.
ReplyDeleteCastle (s3) - Too much of the same.
Hawaii 5-0 (s2) - lost interest.
Hart of Dixie (s2) - I don´t mind romance, but this was too much. Don´t like when they change partners every few episodes.
Supernatural (s4) - needed more different characters.
Mad Men (s4) - I might catch up
Falling Skies (s2) - didm´t find it interesting anymore.
I also dropped OUAT, The Following, Sleepy Hollow, Person of interst before the first season ended.
4-6. I stopped watching TVD, Grey's, Glee and BatB within the last two seasons. I plan on not getting back to Revenge either coming fall.
ReplyDeleteP.S. Just curious, how come we can vote for 3 options? This is a pretty black and white question, it can only have one answer.
Neverland arc was pretty stale, but the Oz arc was outstanding in my opinion. I'd say you check out episodes 10-12 and then see if you want to continue
ReplyDeletelets see... that are still on air... Falling skies, Master of sex, Bates motel, teen wolf... The others end already or were cancelled
ReplyDeleteOh my Poll, cool :)
ReplyDelete15 for me unfortunately :/
The Walking Dead (S3) - I watched literally 20 seconds of season 4 and ten switched it off and never went back, I thought S3 was too boring.
Falling Skies (S3) - All of season 3 was just too boring for me, I never went back to it for S4.
Defiance (S2) - I liked this show but I thought the first 2 episode of season 2 were just awful so I dropped it.
The Vampire Diaries (S5) - It was about half way through the season I stopped watching, there's a list of reasons why!
The Originals - Half way through the season I stopped, got too boring and the show didn't seem to know what ti wanted it to do.
Arrow (S2) - Just after the Barry Allen episode I just got too bored with it.
Reign - Again, half way through the season I just got bored with it.
Revolution (S2) - I watched the first episode of S2 and never went back to it, I didn't like the acting and the storyline was getting boring for me too.
New Girl (S3) - I watched a few episodes of S3 and dropped it, just wasn't as good as it used to be for me.
Supernatural (S9) - I probably would have stoped watching this sooner if I was watching it from the start, but I only started it after S8 and binge watched all 8 seasons, then half way through S9 it got too boring for me.
True Blood (S7) - I was going to stick with this since it's the last season anyway but I just couldn't, I only watched the first episode of the season.
Star-Crossed - After about 10 episodes but mainly because I knew it was gonna get cancelled.
The Tomorrow People - Half way through the season the love triangle was just doing my head in!
I also started binge watching Lost & Doctor Who this year and stopped watching Lost after S3 and Doctor Who after S1 but I didn't count those in the poll, might have been different if I was watching them while everyone else was!
Also, and im almost ashamed to say this, I was on the verge of giving up on Teen Wolf as well, I really missed the twins and the first 2 episodes of season 4 were such a disappointment, but then the third episode was just amazing and it sucked me right back in!
Lol I didnt think anyone read the text above USD polls! Don't worry though, I had considered dropping Teen Wolf as well but the third episode of S4 won me back :)
ReplyDeleteHawaii Five-0 and Homeland after a few episodes of season 2, Pretty Little Liars after 2x05, never went back for season 3 of Falling Skies... And, of course, lots of new shows that I watch 4 or 5 episodes before decide if I want to continue or drop.
ReplyDeleteI was interested in watching the Oz arc as I like Rebecca Mader, but I don't want to miss out some episodes and jump ahead, and I have little to no motivation to watch the Neverland arc and I don't particularly like where the show is heading now either.
ReplyDeleteFirst being human canadian version.it was great but turnout shit...
ReplyDeleteSecond vampire diaries, how much awesome she was, but after season toe it was like she is on some repeater thing, goes forward then comes back, every three four episodes, what a shame...
Third helix, same old concept same romances but better setup, i think it went tooo sifi...
I loved and steel love SUITS..
cheers
Covert Affairs-liked season one but season two wasn't good IMO option so dropped it about seven episodes in
ReplyDeleteTrue Blood-loved season two ,season three was bad ,season four was better than s3 but dropped it after S4
Reba-dropped it a few episodes into S6
Nikita-S1 was great but S2&3 were bad IMO opinion so dropped it a few episodes into S3
Mistresess -haven't watched S2 at all
Baby Daddy-I'm dropping it after three seasons
Mystery Girls-I think after four episodes(finally the pilot) I'll drop it.
R&I I'm considering dropping( hasnt been as good since S1),Hit the Floor & Devious Maids(S2 isn't as good as S1),VD ( S5 was bad),too.
However, I very rarely drop shows, once I'm in ,I'm usually there til the end
Well, you could always read what happens, you won't miss out much. You just have to know a few things, then watch "Going Home" the Neverland arc ending (and one of the best episodes of S3) and then you're good to go
ReplyDeleteGlee, Beauty and the Beast, Suburgatory, Graceland, Body of proof.
ReplyDeleteAnd of course there are a lot of newbies of which I started watching the first episodes and didn't like enough to keep them.
I quit OUAT in the same episode that you did and I watched the season finale and the show hasn't improved. If anything it has become a lot worse. Some storylines are really repetitive and frustrating. Also I agree that they are pandering all the time to the loudest fanbase.
ReplyDeleteA lot, most noticeably Supernatural. I find that with so many shows out and so many places to watch shows now that I have less patience with struggling shows and drop them earlier.
ReplyDeleteFalling Skies: I'm pretty sure I stopped at the end of S2.
ReplyDeleteBody of Proof: Once they killed off Peter, I was done.
Burn Notice: I stopped watching in the end of S5 but I did watch the series finale.
Sanctuary: I stopped in the middle of S2 after Ashley died, then picked it up again, then dropped it again.
I'm on the verge of dropping PLL but after last week's explosion, I'll keep watching it. I don't know if I can continue watching it after this season through.
I dropped watching HIMYM right before the last episode ;) After I read what happened, I still can't watch it. Hart of Dixie I don't think that it will come the time when I'll restart watching it, but who knows. Shows I stopped watching, but didn't give up on it and will catch up someday (I hope): POI, Hawaii Five-0, Elementary.
ReplyDeleteGreys, Glee, Big Bang Theory
ReplyDeleteGrey's Anatomy because they killed of Mark and Lexie.
ReplyDeleteSuits beacuse... Because I don't understand what they are doing with that show anymore.
In my opinion, "Going Home" and "Save Henry" are the only episodes worth watching in S3A, with "Going Home" being my second favorite episode of the show. The Oz arc felt a little bit off towards the end of it, as I felt that Zelena's personality was a little everywhere, but "Witch Hunt," "New York City Serenade," and, "Bleeding Through" were great episodes, plus the season finale (looked through non-shipper goggles).
ReplyDeleteIt's ashame that you stopped SHIELD, it got so much better later on! :D
ReplyDeleteOh god, the shippers were another reason I left...I liked Emma on her own
ReplyDeleteme too I am going to try Dropping Supernatural this season I am done with the bad writing and no Sam POV and the demon dean crap just suck turning someone who was bitching and moaning to stay human 5 season's ago into a Demon just really sucks.
ReplyDeleteI am going to start watching Shield have to watch something instead of Supernatural. and now its on at the same time shield it is.
ReplyDeleteSeeing this comment is really sad, because I love all those shows :P
ReplyDeleteEverybody says that but I don't have the patience to watch 15 more episodes to get to the good stuff when there are so many other shows out there. I prefer watching in a new show (probably Penny Dreadful)
ReplyDeleteI haven't stopped watching any shows yet, though I said in the fall I would cut out 3 since I'm going to be watching some of the new shows and have too much already. Going to cut out shows I watch casually with little interest. I have a few.
ReplyDeleteI’ve dropped:
ReplyDeleteGrey’s when they killed Lexie, I had already lost interest in most of the characters (I can’t stand back and forth relationships)
Glee after the first season.
Revenge, It’s just the same thing over and over.
The Originals about 3/4 thru the first season, again it’s the same thing over and over.
The Tomorrow People half way thru because I just couldn’t connect to the concept.
Teen Wolf, got tired of him being a really weak Alpha.
Orphan Black, what was his/her name? Tony?? She’s a great actress but it just felt like they were tring to stretch it too far.
I’m close to giving up Heartland and SHEILD. I stopped watching Hart of Dixie for a large portion of S3 but watched the end and will probably watch it again this season. Also gave up Rookie Blue for part of S4 but picked it up close to the finale.
Ones I’m really glad I stuck thru are Bones, BATB, TVD, Rookie Blue because they all had points that I found frustrating but now I am really excited about where they are going.
there's been a number of shows I've let go that I've liked mainly due to the quality of the writing no longer impacts me the way that it used to or has degraded (imo): examples that come to mind are: Bones, Frasier, ER, Heroes, Glee.. I also let shows go sometimes because they generally feel repetitive and I don't have enough time to watch everything that I want to and I need to cut the fat out of my watching schedule and make room for other newer shows: the Mentalist, CSI Vegas are likely getting the boot to make room this coming fall as well as TVD and the Originals as thier quality really declined for me....
ReplyDeleteI cant recommend Person Of Interest strongly enough , the first season wasn't the greatest but it gets so much better especially season 3.
ReplyDeleteI completely understand that and have done the same thing with some of my shows. It's definitely why I'm still watching Supernatural; why I stuck around watching MacGyver & Miami Vice after a pretty bad season. (both of those shows repaid my loyalty by getting a lot better in their subsequent seasons) I guess I just don't get attached to characters at the same level for all the shows I watch.
ReplyDeleteTony only appears in one episode of Orphan Black, so if you dropped it because of him you might want to give the rest of the season a look.
ReplyDeleteI'm the same. I get so invested in characters it is hard to drop shows. Impossible if the show made my favorites list. I need to see the ending.
ReplyDeleteThe only shows which I really liked and then dropped are Dexter (after season 5) , Grays (season 4), X-files (season 7), Bones (season4). I did stop watching a lot of shows I was OK with and gave it a season or two ( long list, but most popular are Breaking Bad (yes-yes, everybody suppose to love it, I know), Sleepy Hollow(feels like fancier, higher budget love child of SPN and TVD for me), Arrow (comics are not my cup of tea), Under the Dome (find it extremely boring), Game of Thrones (love books, but that TV adaptation is completely in conflict with my personal imagination of how things and characters suppose to look like. Probably will hate-watch in after show ends )
ReplyDeleteOne more thing : going through the comments I noticed that almost every second commenter dropped Supernatural. Which is funny because SPN was one of very few broadcast shows (10 out of 75) who gained viewers 2nd year in the row. I guess more people returned or discovered it then abandoned.
Llo
ReplyDeleteYeah Tony was one of those decisions that sounds cool in a person's head or maybe on paper, but was just too much on screen.
ReplyDeleteAside from Tony, Season 2 of Orphan Black was a step backwards anyway in my opinion. IT was still good, but nowhere near its Season 1 brilliance.
People keep saying that, and I really want to like it, but from what I have seen it is very "case of the week" stuff, and that is just not my thing.
ReplyDeleteCan I start watching season 3 or will I loose out on too much info?
HA! loved your Smurf comment! :-)
ReplyDeleteI stopped watching 2 1/2 Men,,, without charlie and later jake just wasn't the same.
ReplyDeleteI used to watch Glee and stopped, the final episode i saw was the Cory Monteith tribute.
i was half way though Revolution's second season, and when i heard the show was canceled i gave up on the show. ( did it end good? )
it's nice to see that someone still cares about Izzie nowadays. But yeah she's really gone, god knows where.
ReplyDeleteAgree 100% on Supernatural. I loved 1-5 but after that it just felt like a same old and it got a tad too boring for me. I've said before, it lost its scare-factor and that was the main draw for me with the series.
ReplyDeleteI am very choosy to which shows I will watch and I rarely drop any even if they turn pretty bad.
ReplyDeleteI don't drop shows, either. Part of it is that I have a weird habit of getting into shows late into their runs, so it seems weird to not stick it out to the end for that reason alone.
ReplyDeleteBut even if I've been with a show since the start, I still don't feel an urge to drop the show when it goes through bumpy times. Like you, I like the characters too much to let go, and I'm one who can always manage to find something worthwhile to appreciate in every season, even if it isn't my favorite one (I always find it strange when people are automatically dropping shows the first season or two in. There's a few of my favorite shows whose best seasons don't come until their second season, or halfway through their run if they last longer than a couple! Those people would be missing out then!). And anyway, if I've stuck with it that long I want to see how it all wraps up.
Re: "Criminal Minds"-heh, them exploring the people's personal lives is a big reason, if not the main reason, why I watch that one! I'm not one who regularly watches procedurals as it is-that one grabbed my attention because I like the way they delve into the characters' lives a little more. I don't pay all that close of attention to the cases a lot of the time on that show, LOL.
ReplyDeleteSame here. I too, get too attached to characters.
ReplyDeleteNo, it ended on a cliffhanger. Still the first half of S2 was the best Revolution. The second half has some good episodes but other episodes are horrible.
ReplyDeleteI am currently binge-watching Lost and finished season 3 today. Why did you drop it?
ReplyDeleteSupernatural, NCIS, NCIS:LA, Criminal Minds, TVD, are series that I watched for many years and dropped. Especially proceduals. I'm tired of them at the moment. BatB, Castle, TTP, Sleepy Hollow, Vikings are series which I tried to watch again and again. But just in the end I never followed up on them.
ReplyDeleteI thought it got really boring and I really really don't like Elizabeth Mitchell at all :/
ReplyDeleteI don't know if it counts as dropping but there are some series where I skip through the episodes to watch only the scenes with the characters I like, like in Vampire Diaries I only watch the scenes with Damon, Elena or Stefan and I skip a lot of the rest. So I know what happens in every episode but I wouldn't say I've watched them though.
ReplyDeleteI do the same thing in Grey's Anatomy where I just watched Cristina and Owen (can't do that anymore though), or with True Blood I only watch Eric and Lafayette, or with Glee I only watch the scenes with Kurt and Blaine...
All in all it seems there are a lot of shows I skip through scenes here and there, but doesn't everyone do that?
Um, no.
ReplyDeleteI personally would never do that.
If I only like a character or two on a show I would never watch the series. I need to like the overall series. I watch shows for the serialized story more than characters usually honestly, so watching only some scenes or every other episode would mean I was losing out on the story. Not my thing..
I usually watch shows because of the characters or because of the actors, and the story sometimes takes second place. Like I love the Danny/Steve relationship on Hawaii and they're the main reason I watch the show, I follow the cases but whether or not they're top notch doesn't really bother me.
ReplyDeletePersonally I need an "anchor" to keep watching a show, and that is usually a character or an actor. I watch The Originals solely because I love Joseph Morgan's Klaus.
Grey's Fringe and Rookie Blue. But I skimmed through some episodes for all of them.
ReplyDeleteIndeed :D.
ReplyDeleteYeah, I think I watch crime shows wrong, LOL. Seriously, though, I totally understand that-the main point of crime dramas is to, well, focus on the crimes, and let the audience solve the mystery along with the detectives. So if the focus isn't as much on that anymore I can see where those who would like that side of things would start tuning out. And as you note above procedurals seem to lose their luster in general for you after a while, too, so I'm sure that's a factor as well. It's tough to keep that sort of genre fresh for very long.
I always wind up having a favorite character on the shows I like, so when I get DVDs, or when they show reruns on TV, I'll often be more likely to watch the episodes that heavily feature them a lot of the time (and not coincidentally, those tend to be some of my favorite episodes as well. Freely admitting my biases here).
ReplyDeleteBut if I watch an episode of a show I like where my favorite character isn't featured, I still always watch straight through. I just can't do the "skipping scenes" thing for some reason (unless I need to get information about a specific scene for some reason or another super quick, then I'll do that. But that's the only time). And most of the shows I like are ensemble shows, so even though I've got a personal favorite character, they have such good chemistry with the rest of the cast and I like all the other characters, too. So I still want to see what all's going on in the scenes where the character I like isn't featured as a result.
There is no wrong way to watch a show though.. Whatever works for you is right for you...
ReplyDeleteNormally COTW cop shows do not do it for me at all unless there is something unique in format or tone to keep my interest. For me Criminal Minds was different than most everything on (when it started) because it focused on the psychological aspects of the criminal mind. that was what hooked me.It could seriously have been a new cast each year, or maybe even each week if I found the weekly cases interesting! XD
In general I think procedurals have a much more limited story due to that design. It does work to gain more viewers, but I think it is also the main reason why cable shows dominate the awards season.
I get it though, most network procedural shows are more character centered and not story based. That is what gives them more longevity and broader appeal. It works for some people, even works for me for a while...
Supernatural - recycled storylines and offensive all around
ReplyDeleteTVD - ridiculous storylines and characters that look the same, but no longer have anything in common with the characters I used to like
Sleepy Hollow - it was getting boring
Hannibal - annoying
GoT - offensive
Shonda isn't literally stopping her, she just doesn't see any real reason for it. But personally I think closer to the series finale, Izzie will return just for us to see her, for like an episode to see what happened to her.
ReplyDeleteBut there is no real space for her anymore.
Alex has moved on with Jo, and they've got enough issues than for Her to return.
And all the newbies besides Meredith is gone.
Personally I'd like for her to return married with a great job. And talks/ gets drunk with Meredith, Alex and Christina and talks about their successes and being doctors.
I agree. S1 was excellent, I knew it would be hard to keep the momentum going. My other issue is Paul. I really liked him and how he was helping her but now we never see him and I'm not sure I like where his character has gone.
ReplyDeleteI'll think about it. Thanks. :)
ReplyDeleteI was glad they killed Ashley, I really didn't like her :P I much preferred the one who replaced her (can't remember her name)
ReplyDeleteI almost dropped Continuum in season 2 but I stuck with it and season 3 was the best season imo! But now it's in danger of getting cancelled :( There was a campaign on Facebook & Twitter last night to renew it, I hope they do, season 3 was really good :)
ReplyDeleteSeason 3 definitely wasn't the best as it had quite a few pointless episodes (Stanger in a Strange Side, Tricia Tanaka is Dead, Exposé), not to mention those pointless characters Nikki and Paolo. But the season introduced interesting characters like Ben and Juliet, who have become two of my favourite characters.
ReplyDeleteBeauty and the Beast for me.
ReplyDeleteI dropped TVD and SPN because I just wasn't enjoying them anymore and never looked back and I don't regret it. Then I dropped Grimm, The Following and Sleepy Hollow because they got really boring. I also stopped watching sitcoms altogether.
ReplyDeleteAnd I couldn't get past season 1 of the Walking Dead. It was so incredibly boring.
I am sick of the Recycled storylines Crap on SPN too.
ReplyDeleteRevenge when they made every character unlikable, OUAT, American Horror Story, New Girl, Glee...
ReplyDeleteI could give a long list of shows that I should have dropped after certain seasons, but that's not what this is about. Really, the only show that I quit well into it's run was Heroes. I stopped after midway through season 3, because Tim Kring kept apologizing for everything, and the show just sucked at that point. I'm not sure if I'm going to continue with Vikings, but we'll see.
ReplyDeleteTrue Blood I may have quit if it wasn't the final season (though it finally just had a really good episode). The same goes for Sons of Anarchy. I'm close to dropping AHS, a show I never thought was good, just mildly entertaining.
