The Leftovers - B.J. and the A.C. - Advance Preview
20 Jul 2014
GN Reviews The LeftoversLast Sunday's episode of The Leftovers focused primarily on the Reverend and his backstory. It is my favorite episode to date and The Leftovers is quickly becoming one of my favorite shows on TV right now. The show is getting better each and every week. I hope that fans don't dismiss it too quickly and give it some time to explore this strange new world and this chaotic little town.
This weeks episode is a little quieter than last weeks, but definitely had some intense moments in the last half that I've noticed is a running theme with The Leftovers. As always, there is quite a bit of symbolism throughout, leaving the audience to interpret certain scenes for themselves. I am still struggling with the meaning of the episode title and probably need another re-watch to understand, but the great thing about The Leftovers is I don't mind watching it over and over again.
We are almost at the halfway point of the first season and it appears that the writers are creating somewhat of a villain for us to focus our hatred towards. We saw some of the good that reverend can do, all for his beloved congregation. All that he worked to accomplish was shattered when he learned of the Guilty Remnant taking his last bit of salvation, his church. It appears the Guilty Remnant are meant to be the bad guys and it is understandable. I think anyone would be über upset at the cult that sends a pair of people to watch over your every step, simultaneously blowing cigarette smoke in you path.
Episode four, B.J. and the A.C., delves deeper into the lives of Mapleton's citizenry, focusing on the collective rather than just one individual like last week. It is also the holiday season, which adds a festive mood to the whole episode, alleviating some of the usual bleakness surrounding the characters and town. I think fans will enjoy this week's chapter of The Leftovers as we get a look into more of Chief Kevin Garvey's life at home and what he is going through with his family life and job. The first two episodes showed him losing his grip with different facets of his life and this week you will see him struggle as he pulled in all directions. Clear lines are beginning to be drawn in the town of Mapleton and the next few episodes should reveal which side everyone is on.
What to Notice
- Jill's behavior is something to watch for not only in this episode, but in future ones as well.
- Will Kevin see a silver-lining in anything? He seems so angry all the time.
- How will the Reverend react to events from the last episode?
Have a great weekend everyone! Enjoy the fourth episode of The Leftovers, B.J. and the A.C.! And pay attention to see if you can decipher what the title means because I might not be able to, :)
"The show is getting better each and every week."
ReplyDeleteTotally agree. It's one of the strangest shows I've seen with some fascinating characters. Hope we get a 2nd season!
Me too! I would love to see what they do with a second season!
ReplyDeleteI agree, it get´s better every week and the characters are getting more and more interesting. I hope people give it a chance (never understood the hate it seems to get).
ReplyDeleteKeep up these advanced reviews. They get me excited for the episode. It's nice to see a preview written by someone who actually dives in to the intricacies of the episode :D
ReplyDeleteI agree, it's great to get these previews.
ReplyDeleteSomehow the show is so bland for me, can't get attached to it. I like the cast, the story is farely interesting, complicated but I can't get excited about it. Let's see maybe it comes with the next bunch of episodes.
ReplyDeleteI don't understand the hate either??? On tv.com, a half a dozen people rated it at a 1 or 2, every episode before it even airs.
ReplyDeleteDominion has this problem over there as well. From some of the comments, it's because of the spiritual themes. Which is silly, because neither are based, on any real world religion. Lost & Battlestar Galactica had it's share of haters, for the same reason.
ReplyDeleteI suppose it's all a matter of taste. I, honestly, do not like slow burn shows. I like to be pulled in every week. The Leftovers is a slow burn kind of show, it will pay off in the end, but something about the writing and the actors makes me want to watch every week. I love to see how this little town is reacting to the SD. I probably would enjoy it more if it was 3 days or 3 months after the SD, but so far I really enjoy each episode. It also depends how much violence you care for. I have seen parts of episode 5 and, wow, its rough. And that is coming from a guy whose two favorite shows on TV right now is Game of Thrones and Walking Dead, lol.
ReplyDeleteMy pleasure! Glad you all enjoy them.
ReplyDeleteI had this same conversation with a friend yesterday. I told her that I think what is going on is The Leftovers is in a special subset--- A Sci-Fi story without the Sci-Fi. Yeah there was the SD, but nobody talks about it - people don't constantly disappear - people are not coming back - it's not like some of the cast of Mapleton is going to disappear in episode 8 (I hope not anyway). So, it's unique in that sense. Fans of Sci-Fi want to see Sci-Fi and Fans of Drama don't want anything to do with Sci-Fi (sometimes). The issue is The Leftovers used their Sci-Fi trump card in the first 5 minutes of the series. Add to that that we will never know what happened to the Departured and you will have a lot of people on the fence, not giving it a chance. Although they should because it's great.
ReplyDeleteAnd "GsMumbo" it means a lot to know my articles are appreciated, thank you.
ReplyDeleteSo you're a dumbass with terrible taste and low-attention span. Good for you. Anything else you have to share?
ReplyDeleteYes, I guess you are right. I love the Sci-Fi element in this story, though I´m not really a Sci-Fi fan.
ReplyDeleteThanks for this! Just caught up after watching the pilot and liking it so much I decided to read the book before continuing. Definitely glad I did, it allows you to understand some of the characters more which can be important in a slow burn show like this, although it is also quite different.
