Flagship CBS comedy series The Big Bang Theory is slated to go into production on its upcoming eighth season on July 30. But with only two weeks to go, the entire original cast of the hit comedy is still without contracts. I hear the two sides are still far apart and there has been little dialogue.

Wow. But I don't think CBS will hold out. It's their biggest show and they want to keep the momentum going
ReplyDeleteI hope they start a lockout.
ReplyDeletethey should pay them if they paid Ashton Kutcher that much for 2.5 Men, they can pay them what they ask right?
ReplyDeleteIt's always all about the money. Why can't actors just work because they have a passion for it and enjoy it, and let the money come third behind the job and their fans, instead of first.
ReplyDeleteLet's be honest, they are in a winning position, cbs wont cancel the show nor will it continue without the main 3, so it'd do exactly the same.
ReplyDeleteAnd no one would do that job for free, it may look really glamourous but they work their ass off for hours on set, they deserve the money.
and its not like their all great actors...
ReplyDeleteand besides I don't even watch that show...
Despite the act I don't like the show at all I agree. Some of them know that it's possible that after TBBT they end up getting very little to no work. They understand that there's a strong possibility this is the most money they will make in their lives.
ReplyDeleteAlso if CBS could pay Charlie Sheen 1.5 million dollars per episode when he was an unprofessional mess they can pay more money to this cast.
It would take many middle class people a decade to earn what these actors earn for a single episode, in which they might only get 10 minutes of screentime. I'm all for people working to earn their fame and respect for their craft, and this cast has no doubt done that, but I do think it gets to a point where it's just all out greed, and that certainly dims my view of them as people. They end up looking greedy, not gracious, for their once in a lifetime opportunity. And of course you have lucrative opportunities being the face of a clothing or makeup line for years to come.
ReplyDeleteThese actors need to understand that they're part of something which has elevated them to heights right up there with the most famous names in their profession. and the most famous names in society. That's a lot to be thankful for, and demanding more and more cash just because you can almost never does anything to improve the view those who look up to you, have of you. Good on them for being successful, but don't gloat about it, is all
CBS seems to like holding out on actors who are part of their higher rated shows. You would think that what 17 or so million viewers a week would be enough of a incentive.
ReplyDeleteSo they're contracted for three more seasons…but there's not contracted? I don't get it.
ReplyDeleteThe problem is the premisse... you are assuming way too many things here. I understand these people make way more money than regular citizens will ever be able to make. I also do understand it can be considered absurdly unfair, in a macro perspective. But the point is: accepting less money won't change the system, it will only mean you get less money out of a deal, period.
ReplyDeleteAlthough I share your indignation, I'm not convinced being soft on CBS is the solution. Let's not forget, they're not negotiating with a poor, helpless person, but with one of the largest broadcast networks in the US. Is it a ridiculous amount? Very likely, yes. But if they don't take the money, it won't go to charity or even to anyone else, it will stay with CBS.
They're not disrespecting fans, IMO, or the profession. They're trying to take their cut out of the most profitable show CBS currently has. We can obviously criticize the system in general, but I don't believe it makes sense to blame the actors for any of it. Not only would a smaller paycheck not change the overall outcome (such outcome being precisely what you said: it is all about money), but it might even worsen the problem, because CBS would get a bigger cut.
The show is contracted for three more season not the actors.
ReplyDeleteBecause someone will make tons and tons of money off of the millions watching the show. I would rather it be the cast and crew than the executives at the studio
ReplyDeleteMy inner-self hater wants the show to be canceled because I hate it and consider it steals the spotlight from some better comedies.
ReplyDeleteBut my rational decision is: pay them, warner, if they were able to pay 1kk per episode for the six Friends, they can do it.
It's not like they don't have three sitcoms that are syndication beasts.
The Big Bang Theory to me is, and always has been, a show that's decent enough for me to routinely catch new episodes when they're on. However, if this show was shockingly canceled out of the blue today I wouldn't really care. Anyway, there's no way in hell CBS doesn't give all these people new contracts.
ReplyDeleteIt means, for the next three seasons, The Big Bang Theory will be nothing but Stuart, Kripke, Wil Wheaton, and Leslie Winkle.
ReplyDeleteWowww!!! That's crazy. I'm not going to worry though, I mean there is no show, w/o the actors.
ReplyDeleteYeah they think they are new Aniston, Cox, Kudrow, Perry, Le Blanc & Schwimmer. Good luck with that thinking, Not even close, not know, not ever.
ReplyDeleteNot surprising to be honest. It's not like they won't reach a deal given that it is the biggest show on network TV.
ReplyDeleteIt is no different than a professional athlete who is on fire demanding more money. Quite frankly these stars are making Warner Brothers, CBS, and umpteen other stations a lot of money. My guess is that they see those companies as being greedy for not equally sharing the profits.
ReplyDeleteMiddle class lives of their paycheck o month, and makes their employer much less money. They're making money for the rest of their life. And they make CBS a Warner much much more money. It's only fair to get paid as much as they want.
ReplyDeleteThat's because they are. Whether you like them as actors or not, whether you like the show or not, they are in the exact same situation as the Friends stars were. They are the biggest comedy bar none on all of TV. They are the bigger than any hour long scripted drama on TV. Their reruns often get higher demos than other show's first run demos. They propel other comedies shown on the same night into high ratings as well. There is no denying that these actors are bringing in viewers and big time money. They are this generation's Friends.
ReplyDeleteCould be a bug planted by the actors so CBS would pay up. I mean it's a brilliant move.
ReplyDeleteI love the show but they shouldn't allow themselves his kind of Bad marketing. It just looks bad.
I didn't know shows could be extended without the actors' contracts.
ReplyDeleteThat would be something, wouldn't it? Lol.
ReplyDeleteWhile I agree with you.The quality of Friends at Season 7 much better then TBBT. Season 8 and 10 (where Joey and Rachel got together) had bit low moments but there were still good.Lets see how TBBT does in its S8.
ReplyDeletePersonally I think both shows are overrated, even if I casually like them both.
ReplyDeleteI'm actually okay with that.
ReplyDeleteActually, yeah. Come to think of it, I'd probably give it a shot.
ReplyDeleteI think Stuart having conversations with a never seen Mrs. Wolowitz has a quirky charm and I can see real character growth by this move. Amy, Leslie, and Bernadette can bond and become the focus. And let's face it, Wil Wheaton can use a more regular gig since his SyFy talk show isn't going to cut it. In fact, they could use it as fodder for laughs in the show.
ReplyDeleteWhy would CBS pay Charlie Sheen that money? Isn't it Warner Bros. that pays him? Isn't CBS just the network broadcasting the show? CBS doesn't get any syndication profits, do they? Why would they accept having to give a massive paycheck to Sheen if they only earn ad-money? Anyone able to clarify this for me?
ReplyDeleteI'm assuming they're referring to the constant ratings battle that occurred between "Big Bang Theory" and "Community" when the latter was on TV (though, to that poster, feel free to correct me on that one)?
ReplyDeleteI've never understood that mentality, though, regardless of the shows being referenced. A show can't "steal the spotlight" from other shows. There's plenty of reasons why some shows fare better in the ratings than others. Sure, I'd love it if some of my favorite shows that were struggling in terms of viewership did better on that front, but I'm not going to start hating on more popular shows just because they happened to luck out in the success and popularity department.
Hmmm.I liked Friends more:) I can watch it over and over again and I never get bored. Not once have done with TBBT .Although S2-S3 Sheldon-Penny scenes were worth repeat value.
ReplyDeleteI guess you can't read.. because I said that I don't watch the show... never said I hated it....and yeah there are better things on...... comedies and dramas as well... but I also never stated anything about that in my comment either...
ReplyDeletebecause I CAN
ReplyDeleteI'm just the opposite. I loved friends but never watched the reruns, where as I watch TBBT reruns every night- and still laugh out loud.
ReplyDeleteWarner Brothers produces AKA owns the show and CBS airs it.
