ReplyDeleteMy exact same reaction!
ReplyDeleteToo many shows on Sunday T_T
ReplyDeletebasically, showtime xD
ReplyDeleteUnfortunately. They need a show or two that stand out as something remarkable, and doesn't have to market itself as softcore porn.
ReplyDeleteexactly, problem is they made softcore porn as their "something remarkable" LOL, they need a show that is not centered on sex, otherwise people are going to tune in just for the sex
ReplyDeleteMasters of Sex already (reasonably) has a very nasty stigma. I only just started watching the show the other day, and I'm only eight episodes in, and I must say, this show truly is great. But the negative stigma towards it comes from the title, and how Showtime basically markets it as period piece porn (alliteration!).
ReplyDeleteHomeland is the only show that Showtime even tries to market as a serious series. Even when there's much more to it, Shameless, Episodes, Masters of Sex, House of Lies, and now The Affair, all look like raunch from their covers. Nurse Jackie isn't marketed at all. Ray Donovan and Penny Dreadful are too unfocused to be anything even kind of remarkable.
Masters of Sex and Homeland are what Showtime has for remarkability, but both are ill choices for that conceit. Homeland's best days are almost certainly behind it, and Masters of Sex will never be taken seriously because of its topic.
So here's to hoping that Westworld and Robert Downey Jr.'s rehab drama can fill this gaping void for Showtime.
I'm sure you haven't seen any of these shows that you are bad mouthing. I suppose a show has to have violence 24/7 to be taken seriously right? I mean how many crime shows do we need? Oh but one more sexually themed show is horrible!
ReplyDeleteI'm not even bad-mouthing them. I'm saying they're poorly marketed. I think they're all great in concept. I just wish Showtime would market them as the shows that they truly are, and not as raunch.
ReplyDeleteI didn't say themes of sexuality are horrible (hence, my above praise of Masters of Sex); I think Showtime marketing all of their shows as sex, drugs and alcohol is horrible, especially considering that all of their shows are MUCH more than that.
That said, I still think Masters of Sex is the only running show on Showtime that's truly something remarkable to watch. They need something else special. I don't need that to be a show with gratuitous sex, or violence; I need that to be a brilliantly written and directed show with a powerful cast. Masters of Sex is that, but it's marketed as smut. And besides, as great as that show is, one (two, if you count Shameless, which has a smaller, but just as passionate fanbase) show(s) simply cannot sustain a premium cable network. Showtime needs to step things up because they're being left in the dust. Part of how you do that, is advertising your shows as a narrative powerhouse, not as softcore porn.
I'm not saying Showtime's shows are bad; I'm saying the PR at Showtime are awful.
There just this thing about Ruth that makes me want to watch what she's in!
