Supernatural - Season 10 - New Recurring Female Character
7 Jul 2014
Supernatural
Thanks to Elena for the heads up.
Great! We definitely need more female characters on that show! Let's just hope that she's not an angel though...
ReplyDeleteOr a love interest....
ReplyDeleteOr a Mary Sue (a la Charlie)
ReplyDeleteOh god, I hope not. I'd rather have Sam working alone to save Dean. I hope they don't ruin a brilliant storyline by bringing in another Mary Sue to save the day.
ReplyDeleteI wonder if it's related to this. Ausiello: Sure do. The Season 10 premiere, tentatively
ReplyDeletetitled “Soul Survivor,” will introduce the new recurring role of Rowena,
a tough but elegant woman who will stop at nothing to reclaim her power
base. Here’s the interesting part: Actresses who have or can perfect a Scottish accent are preferred.
If it isn't then we are looking at having 2 women who will appear more than once in season 10. We haven't had that season three Bella and Ruby.
That occurred to me too, but the casting doesn't seem to fit. I don't know much about this actress, but her bio says she's from Vancouver so I'm guessing she doesn't have a natural Scottish accent. She might be good at faking it of course, but she also seems a little young to be paired up against Crowley.
ReplyDeleteIf they split up Sam and Dean for a good portion of this season (and I don't see how it can be otherwise unless they resolve Dean's storyline within the first couple of episodes), they're going to have to introduce more supporting characters for Sam especially to interact with (Dean in addition to Sam has Crowley, possibly Cain, and Cas). Cas will likely spend more time with Sam, but he'll have his own angel storyline and won't be around enough.
That makes a lot of sense. I do think Sam and Dean will be split up for at least the first half of the season. The snippy part of me wants to say that they haven't felt th need for Sam to interact with anyone before this season, but I guess they can't just have Sam running around, presumably hunting and trying to find a way to save Dean while never talking to anyone.
ReplyDeleteNo worries. Maybe Bella and Ruby stand out more because they were both regulars and both potential love interests?
ReplyDeleteThe snippy part of me imagines scenes being written of Sam doing nothing but sitting at a computer, silently searching for clues, but even the writers, I think, would get bored with that after a while. Jared is still a lead so he has to make an appearance every now and then.
Also I am sure Jody Mills was on more than once but I can;t remember which season.
ReplyDeletewho cares about this anymore they just kill her off so who gives a crap anymore.
ReplyDeleteYes, you're right. Seasons 7 and 9.
ReplyDeleteAWESOME NEWS!!!!!!!!!!!
ReplyDeletemaybe they should just write Sam out until the last minute when he can pop up with an out of the blue save after all we dont need to actually have Sam interact with anybody to get the job done we just need to know in the end that he did? Or maybe they can just film Sam as silently researching in the MOL library and tack it on randomly in every episode so Jared gets to keep his lead status and his pay checks?
ReplyDeletemy guess would be demon and interacting with Dean (maybe Crowley) only.
ReplyDeleteIf the Rowena character is a witch then she may be part of her coven. WItches may be one of the bads this season as we all know how much Dean hates witches and don;t they have some connection with demons in getting their powers? Maybe Dean is using hsi demon side to go after the same sort of bad supernatural creatures he hunts normally.
ReplyDeleteNo more Mary Sues taking over. Agreed. But at the same time, one character sitting quietly alone or monologuing to himself isn't much of a story either. Think of how different Dean's current storyline would look if Crowley had played no part, and the conversations between them in First Born, Mother's Little Helper, and Do You Believe in Miracles had never happened?
ReplyDeleteIA. I want Dar to be a hunter who connects with Sam - a non hot pants wearing hunter like the skanky Tracy in 9.02. She can even evolve from 'hunter-partner' into a Sam "LI" .... the way Amelia should have been written ... aware of "what's out there" and not putting the blame for the "Apocalypse" solely on Sam. (That Dean 'allowed' Tracy to even say that without admitting he was equally to blame is my least favorite part of 9.02 - an episode that in general I really liked.)
ReplyDeleteBut "Dar" may be an angel and will be connected more to Cas; I don't think Dar will be a demon connected to DD and Crowley - the show already has Rowena as recurring and I bet the farm that she's connected to Crowley.
I really hope she will be part of Sam's story line. We don't need another character who will be all over Dean. It's starting to get ridiculous.
ReplyDeleteI agree, Indy, not a MarySue (Charlie, Krissy) but an actual hunting teammate that helps Sam track down 'Dean'... sort of like a younger version of "HunterCop" Jody Mills (whom I also like to see back). A character who learned her skills through lots of practice, a character who doesn't make Sam and Dean look like semi-competent amateurs (as the original casting sides for "Rubela" described Ruby and Bela).
ReplyDeletefemale characters never do last on this show
ReplyDeleteYou know, I was responding to a post by percyowner further up (or down) the page, listing off recurring female characters from recent seasons, and almost half were still alive. I think this show has a high mortality rate in general, and if we were to list off recent recurring male characters (Garth, Benny, Frank, Bobby, Bartholomew, Gadreel, Metatron), we'd come up with a close ratio.
ReplyDeleteI don't think (but could be wrong) Rowena and 'Dar' are the same character, just renamed. The details of Rowena are specific but there's no details on 'Dar' yet. I think we just know about the casting for Dar because the show permitted Raquel to tweet and she has been on the show before (babysitter Amber of IBTCAOF).
ReplyDeleteJim Michael's (twitter) says that "Soul Survivor" is not the name of the premiere but it is possible that it's the 'working title' of '10.03', the episode Jensen is directing which will be filmed as #10.01 - I recall that many fans in the past have been confused by the out-of-order filming order designations.
Personally, I wouldn't mind her to be an Angel if she is not (as already mentioned here) a love interest at the same time. I would prefer girl to be there for the story rather than just for the guy
ReplyDeleteJust looked at some other photos of the actress. Just was wondering about her previous projects or something....... well... no offense, but I guess she is there exactly for that storyline
ReplyDeleteComment about Bella just reminded me that I always loved her. Not because of the potential love interest or something. The girl had a really interesting and strong storyline and could be in the story even apart of the Winchesters. Pretty strong and at the same time tragic story.
ReplyDeleteI think this hellatus is getting to us! This character won't be anything more than Hannah, why are you making such a big deal out of it?! lol
ReplyDeleteShe'll be just a minor guest star who won't add a twist to the plot and whose name will be in the ending credit. Unlike that Rowena character whom they're actually talking about.
Supernatural fans always overreact regardless of the topic. Haven't you noticed that by now? ;)
ReplyDeleteShe may or may not be significant, although her tweet does say recurring. For me, I'm just feeling really starved for Sam to have some kind of meaningful interaction with someone other than Dean, or Cas or Bobby. The difference between this and Hannah is that Cas had been interacting with angels about angel business all season long, so Hannah's arrival wasn't anything special.
This character may have absolutely nothing to do with Sam, but ever sense Ruby II, the show seems to like to cast a certain physical type when introducing someone for Sam to interact with (the bartender in the season 6 finale is another example). She's the type, it's hellatus, so I'm speculating. We may find out more when Comic Con spoilers start coming through in a few weeks.
weird name
ReplyDeleteshe probably gonna be a demon since dean is a demon they probably gonna focus more on demons this season then angels
ReplyDeleteI hope this girl will be connected to Sam. Since I'm betting that the Rowena character will be connected to Dean/Crowley. It's only fair that Sam gets to have a friend as well.
ReplyDeleteAlthough with all these characters coming on, it's making me more panicked that Sam and Dean will be split up for a long time and I'm not happy about that. I hate when they are split up.
For SPN recurring means pretty much two episodes in the entire season. So my guess is she's not gonna be around that much...
ReplyDeleteOr a Reaper
ReplyDeleteIt's currently 8 for 8 with the living recurring characters (not counting Cas and Crowley as they are main cast). Except for Metatron, the recurring female characters do appear more often the males. Jody, Charlie, Linda, Krissy, Hannah; and then Lisa and Amelia are still alive but written out of the show. For the males it's Metatron and Garth, Death makes an appearance a season usually. It was like 6 years between appearances for the Ghostfacers, and now they've broken up. The Alpha Vamp and Professor Morrison are still around, but who knows if we'll see them again anytime soon, and finally Ben who was written off.
ReplyDeleteAlso season 9's death count heavily skewed towards male character deaths.
Dar could be a Gaelic name, which translates to "dark," so if Rowena is a witch or pagan goddess, Dar could be connected to her. But Dar is also a name used in Hebrew which means Pearl, so she could be an angel. We'll have to wait.
ReplyDeleteIt's done so Jensen has time to go up to Vancouver and work on pre-production. And I know in season 9 they did it because scheduling issues with Mark Sheppard and Osric Chau.
ReplyDeleteNot really, between 2-5 is about the average. 6-9 appearances usually mean they are either an big bad antagonist or close in some way to the brothers; like Ellen, Jo, Jody, Benny. Hitting double digit appearances is rare feat Castiel has 66, Bobby has 56, and Crowley is at 34, outside of those three 7 characters have made over 10 appearances, and those appearances are split between different actors. Kevin and Lisa are the characters to show up over 10 times with the same actors.
ReplyDeleteI'm aware of all that. In particular last season when filming the first two episodes was also done out of order (9.02 - Devil May Care - was filmed first and designated as #901) it caused minor confusion in several TV site spoiler providers who were insisting that Misha was "in #901" when he was not.
ReplyDeleteOr an angel named Mary Sue Charlie who is a love interest that gets killed off quickly?
ReplyDeleteI was thinking about this more, and remembered (duh!) that the casting calls usually have misleading info about the role the character will play. The Scottish accent could something to throw us off track and make us think she's tied to Crowley when she isn't. The reclaiming her power base is probably fiction that's more about a personality type than a plot. This could be read as simply "a strong, assertive woman."
ReplyDeleteYou are making assumptions based on a tweet and some vague spoilers, just like everyone else here. Don't pretend that you know what's going to happen this season.
ReplyDeleteI don't pretend to know, I'm using my experience about this show and actors of this rank; and it's not about the season, it's about a guest star! ...... What's up with you?! I'm allowed to give my speculation like everyone else, which could turn out to be wrong. *shrug*
ReplyDeleteRogueReaperAngel ;) XD
ReplyDeleteI just hope her character isn't a Mary Sue or isn't evil or suddenly turns evil because she has a vajayjay. Please, SPN, just give me someone like Ellen again.
