Zap2it: Where do we find Sam at the beginning of Season 10?
Jared Padalecki: With his head up his a**. [laughs] No. When Sam went down to summon Crowley to get his brother back at the end of Season 9, he returned to Dean's room to find his brother gone. Since Sam didn't get a chance to see the episode, he didn't know that Crowley was in there or that Dean woke up a demon. So Sam starts out not having any idea that his brother is a demon. True to the Winchester form, he's going to go through hell and high water to try to get his brother back, wherever his brother is. He doesn't know if he's been taken, or vanished, but he has his suspicions. Sam starts out with the same commitment to bring his brother back that he ended with in Season 9, when he was telling Dean, "Stay with me, I'm not going to let you go, I've got you. We'll make it through this." Obviously, he didn't, but he's still going to try and keep his promise.
That's good to hear! I love it when Sam is committed to helping Dean. But we've seen Sam try to find/save his brother before in seasons past, so how will his journey be different in Season 10?
I feel like Sam finally knows and has accepted a lot of the things he's fought for years and years, i.e. his destiny, that Sam and Dean have both done things that maybe weren't completely forthright like when Sam was on demon blood or when Dean let Sam get possessed by an angel. I think Sam has made his peace with it and he realizes all those choices were all made with good intentions. So now we have Sam who just loves his brother and wants his brother to get well and be better. That's how this season will be different.
After a whole season of tolerating each other in a toxic relationship, Sam and Dean finally got to a good place at the end of the Season 9 finale. When Sam and Dean finally do reunite, will those good feelings carry over or will seeing Dean as a demon bring it all back to square one for Sam?
I think seeing his brother as a demon will actually stiffen his resolve. He knows that it wasn't his brother's choice. When Sam does find out -- and he does find out, though he won't know how it happened, he'll just know that Dean is a demon -- he doesn't think it's Dean's fault. He doesn't know if it's the Mark of Cain, or Crowley, or something else entirely but when he sees what's happened with his brother, he feels as if someone has wronged his brother and it steels his resolve to fix things.

ReplyDeleteNothing was resolved at the end of season 9 it was just pasted over with 3rd rate wallpaper. Sam;s side was not even written for the show could not write its way out of a paper bag.
ReplyDeleteI don't know about anyone else but I feel a lot better about the 200th episode...I couldn't imagine how they were going to do it but I think the brothers working a case that bring back the Carver Edlund books is always fun. And from the sounds of it, it's not going to be Sam and Dean singing which would keep true to the canon. Excited to have this side of Sam back and over all I'm excited!

ReplyDeleteYes, I feel a little better now, too, Still no guarantee that Robbie T's OC Charlie won't show up as a replacement for 'Carver Edlund' expert "Becky Rosen" but I agree that's it's likely that Sam and (Demon?) Dean won't be actively participating.

I can't disagree... I think Sam's (Jared's) role in most episodes post 9.11 was either weakly written or written to put Sam in a bad light again.
ReplyDeleteI've never been a fan of Chuck or the books so I'm not too thrilled they're going back to that well. It also seems to make it very clear that it won't be too long before it is business as usual with Sam and Dean. I was hoping the demon thing would really shake things up but it doesn't seem like that will last very long.
ReplyDeleteNo I don't think the demon thing will last long but I'm 99% positive Dean will still be a demon at this point. I don't think they will complete that story arc until the midseason finale. I'm guessing that Sam is just partnering with Dean and keeping his eye on him (make sure he doesn't do anything "too" bad/demon like) until he figures out how to cure him. My guess is by doing the last task of the trials, the "curing a demon" thing. But my worry is, by doing this would Sam technically be completing the trials, closing the gates of Hell, and something bad will happen to him? Or will it just returning Dean's humanity?

JC: It’s a little multi-layered in that the demon part of Dean will be therefor the majority of the first half of the season — not the entire thing. But, I think one complication they’ll realize is even though Dean has been a demon, he still has the Mark of Cain. So he’s not out of the woods by a long shot.”
So, you're right and Demon Dean will be 'with us' in 10.05. But as Carver reminds fans, de-demoned Dean will still have the MOC so that's another problem
for another day ;). I’m not even certain of Dean’s ‘life” status – if Sam cures Demon Dean will he even be alive or still need to be resurrected (other than by the “First Blade”)?
I don't think 'curing Demon Dean' will complete the trials and cause Sam's death; each Trial was completed only after Sam said the Enochian phrase - if Sam doesn't say the phrase it should be no different what the boys and Cas saw in the video in 8.22 Clip Show where the priest cured the demon/father.
I just hope the show doesn't do a 're-do' of Dean trying to keep 'Soulless Sam' out of trouble once Sam finds DD.
I agree that sam's role was weak and I hope it was on purpose. Sometimes you have to fall to rise again stronger. And Sam had to grow up, and stop looking for ways around his destiny and I am hearing we are there. He now knows this is his destiny and his path. I just don't want him pulled back to evil. For those that have watched Sammy grow up - we don't want to see that he can be beat up repeatedly by Dean - we already know this (he can take a licking and keep in ticking). We don't need him to turn to a monster. We have seen that. It is truly time for him to grow up and be an equal. That doesn't mean that Dean won't always look after him- of course he will. But Sammy can still show what he is made of. We need him to be someone that Dean would be proud of also- his brother and strong enough to win a few fights with his brother. I hope Cas is there to push Sam in the right direction- would seem a great role for him and I think the two of them would be a good team. I also think it will help with putting angels in a better light as they start to fix themselves also. So I guess only time will tell us if the story is thought out on all these levels.... Just a side note. I know that different members were asked if they watch the old shows. Most said occasionally. And that might be one of the problems. I know I watch them a lot and repeat them in a binge before a new season - even if you don't do that ... Most of us remember how we got here. I hope the writers do as well. This is a hard story to write for because fans have lots of expectations other than a good fight scene; we want to see the relationships and growth of the characters and we don't want the basics to change because that is how we fell in love with the boys. So my fingers are crossed-
ReplyDeleteOh yeah...I forgot about the phrase...So yeah...I think Sam (I don't know if Cas will help or even know about Dean yet) will "restore Dean's humanity" and they'll have to figure out how to get rid of "the Mark" or destroy the Blade (if that's possible).
ReplyDeleteI think they might kinda do what they did with SS to DD but I don't think it will be any different from earlier seasons where Sam had to "control" Dean to an extent, like not poking an old woman with a stick or mouthing off to the cops...
Now that we kind of have an idea on what's going on with the brothers, I'm curious about Cas and his angel grace. I'd be curious about Crowley too but I haven't forgiven him since I found out he put Bobby's soul in Hell. Sorry to Crowley fans but I want him dead. NOBODY PUTS BOBBY IN A CORNER!
In the same Carver interview (I just submitted the scoop and it may be posted here) and likely other interviews but the recent interview link is freshest in my mind the interviewer asks what Cas will be doing to help Sam with finding Dean and here’s a portion of Carver’s response:
ReplyDelete“ … So we’ll see a real interesting dynamic play out. Castiel is entering the season in a bit of a dilemma himself in that he’s in the same place: he’s dying. To survive, he’s got to get his grace…but to do that, he has to kill another angel, and he doesn’t want to do that. So the question is, what does he do? That’s very much the struggle. At the beginning, Castiel and Sam are in communication. They’re both looking for Dean, but they’re not together. And there are reasons for that.”
So Cas and Sam are in communication – both on earth (said in other interviews) – but not looking for Dean together, at least not early in the season. I also assume that with weakened, stolen Grace, Cas might not be able to do a full on resurrection if “HUMAN DD” is really dead and the First Blade only resurrected Dean as a demon just as it did to Cain when he tried to suicide with the FB.
I think the boys (& Cas?) may need to track down Cain
again, maybe with Crowley’s assistance to see if the MOC can be transferred back or something like that. Then the boys (& Cas/Crowley) have to get rid of the indestructible blade somehow again. That’s as far as my speculation goes at the moment.
As far as Cas goes, I guess the ‘cleanest solution’ will be if Cas’s original grace is still in the vial Metatron it in the S8 finale or at least some portion of it not used in the spell.. Cas was in Heaven in the S9 finale and I can’t imagine him not tearing up Heaven looking for some remnants. I don’t know if I’d necessarily believe anything Metatron might say but Hannah was certain

(I can’t see why Sam doesn’t just use the same needle setup that Cas used to extract Gadreel’s leftover grace from Sam in 9.11 First Born but maybe it doesn’t work that way with ‘stolen grace’; Metatron took Cas’s grace in the S8 finale, healed him and made Cas human-ish – I don’t see why the same actions wouldn’t work on Cas now, all Sam and Cas would need is another sympathetic angel to heal ‘human-ish Cas again)
BUT, I tend to believe what Crowley said in "Heaven Can’t Wait" and Metatron’s spell is irreversible, meaning that all Cas’s grace was used in the spell that cast the angels out of Heaven.
I love Crowley as a character (I adore Mark Sheppard) but I’ve never, ever trusted him and neither has Sam.
Hmmm...I don't know...the only thing I know for sure is that October 7th/8th is too far away...I'm more excited for the 8th of course but the Retrospective on the 7th might chill me out for the remaining 24 hours before Season 10!

I am looking forward to season 10 and will keep my fingers crossed that Carver does not screw it up again.
Dean could do with some growing up himself he got into this mess because he could not see past his own needs. As for someone Dean can be proud of not acting like Dean he won't do anything to save my brother and to hell with the consquences , saving Dean could of been achieved with in Sam's own code not have go off and do exactly what he hated last season.

ReplyDeleteSubstitute "when Dean let Sam get possessed by an angel" with "when Dean made a deal with a demon" and you have season 5.
"It starts out very action-y. Sam will not accept 'no' for an answer in figuring out what happened to his brother. It will kind of be like the first couple of seasons, with Sam acting as a fed or a police officer, a doctor or dentist or whatever, to try to almost solve a case. It's a missing person thing. So the energy of the season premiere is very high-paced, more of a thriller, action, than emotional."
This is what I'm looking forward to the most.
It's Oct 6/7. I have no idea what Cas will do to survive either. Unlike prior years when Cas slowly 'de-powered' and became more human the show made it clear this time that Cas (angel & vessel - I am not clear on that point) will die if he doesn't replenish his grace. 'angelCas' has been more human than angel several times and while he didn't necessarily like it, being human/being humanish didn't kill him. I don't know what he expects to do on earth (if he's unwilling to take the grace from other angels on earth) except to help Sam find Dean and die... except we know he won't die and the show will find another solution.
ReplyDelete"A" solution (assuming his grace was used up in the spell) is to go back to Heaven, take Metatron's grace and either heal (and make Metatron 'human') himself or have another angel in Heaven help him. But that might be later in the season if show goes this route..
I'm mostly excited too about S10 - the only season premiere I was not excited about is S8 because fans who follow spoilers already knew that Sam wouldn't look for Dean. Dean's purgatory flashbacks saved the early parts of S8.
Oh wow...sorry...yes 6/7...I'm a fan of Arrow too and that's why the 8th was on my mind...so..more excited for 7th than the 8th...but also excited for the 6th.
