Ready yourselves, gladiators, this isn't good news.
Shonda Rhimes, the mastermind behind shows like "Scandal" and "Grey's Anatomy," just revealed a bit of her endgame when it comes to Olivea Pope & Associates and it doesn't go past Season 8. The showrunner spoke with The Hollywood Reporter about plans for the upcoming season of the show and admitted she doesn't see too many years left for Olivia, Fitz and the rest of the crew.
"I think there's only so much 'Scandal' you can tell satisfactorily," Rhimes said. "The Fitz-Liv thing can only be told so long and in such a way. It's not a 10-season or eight-season show. I've already decided how long that is and what that's going to be."
Honestly, it's not too surprising that Rhimes has already forged the ending for her political drama. Last season's final episode saw Olivia flying off into the sunset with Jake, Harrison meeting his end at the hands of daddy Pope and Fitz being re-elected for a second term in office. Unless the show decides to change the Constitution of the United States and let Fitz remain as POTUS past another four years, an early ending, at least when it comes to that part of the series, seems likely. But Rhimes also revealed the decision on when to pull the plug doesn't hinge on Fitz completing his time as president.

I wasn't even expecting it to make it to Season 8. I expected it to sooner, despite being a huge success ratings-wise. But it's nice to know Shonda has an endgame in mind.
ReplyDeleteEight seasons sounds good but I wonder how much crazier it could get.
ReplyDeletei love scandal and i'm glad
ReplyDeleteI never thought it would last till S8.
ReplyDeleteJust saying, we're barely at season 4, so who cares! That's even better :D
ReplyDeleteAnd yet, she has no endgame for Grey's planned.
ReplyDeleteThat is still 5 years to go so I'm happy. Usually a show has it hard to keep the story interesting pass season 3, let's see how they'll do in S4.
ReplyDeleteHow many shows that have started in the past few years on network TV would make it that far anyway?
ReplyDeleteLOL. What an hypocrit.
ReplyDeleteShe said the same thing about Grey's Anatomy years ago and now look where we are.
Exactly. It's hard to believe anything she says since she has no idea when GA is going to end!!
ReplyDeleteTagged to show when Scandal gets renewed for its 9th season.
ReplyDeleteI think Mellie or Cyrus could be the next president of U.S. and Fitz maybe get a minor role.
ReplyDeleteFor this kind of show is important to have an ending date..so I agree with Shonda!
ReplyDeleteI don't see why it can't go longer she's managed to make Grey's go on longer then necessary and still people watch. It is nice to know she already knows the ending though.
ReplyDeleteAnd it's not even 8 full seasons - S1 was 7 episodes and S3 18. I believe they made a mistake when they started S1 already deep into presidency. Would've been better if shortly after the inauguration. Anyway, who's to say the each season has to be one year of presidency - it's not like they are in "real time" anyway. The re-election was in 2014!
ReplyDeleteThis is good, this means the story won't be dragged more than necessary! Given the fact that Scandal has lost main characters so soon (Heny Ian Cusick, Colombus Short), it's wise from Shonda to have and endgame already.
ReplyDeleteI wish she felt the same way about Grey's, season 12 should be the last one!
more than half the main cast is already gone!
Come on! I dont believe her at all. That endgame will change anytime ABC wants it to or anytime Shonda is bored at home. The only way Scandal would end in season 8 would be because of low rating or Kerry wanting to leave.
ReplyDeleteI think this is actually good news. I'd be awful if Scandal became a 10 season shows or something. I think it should end around season 6-7
ReplyDeleteAs far as it not going past the 4 years left of the presidents term--each season does not have to be one year; And if they spent more time on other cases and not just on Liv-Fitz it could also go longer. But when they start killing off good people for shock value and to be talked about than caring about the story and how fans feel then it's the beginning of the end.
ReplyDeleteI'm thinking she's going for a five-season framework or a seven-season one for Scandal.
ReplyDeleteI really hope that season 4 goes back to the format of season 1 and 2. Season 3 was very entertaining to watch but I still liked Scandal a lot more when each episode revolved around a particular case.
