IDW KICKS OPEN THE DOORS TO COMIC-CON WITH ORPHAN BLACK!

The Hit Sci-Fi TV Show Takes On Another Form In New Comic Book Series
San Diego, CA (July 23, 2014) – Orphan Black, the acclaimed sci-fi series by Temple Street Productions, assumes a new identity in the form of a comic-book series from IDW Publishing. IDW’s series will not be a clone of the show but will feature some all-new stories set in the complex and thrilling world of Orphan Black.

“Orphan Black, in addition to being a captivating TV series, is a perfect premise for comics,” said Chris Ryall, IDW’s Chief Creative Officer/Editor-in-Chief. “And as the second season has expanded the series in exciting new directions, that has only increased the amount of stories we’ll be able to tell in comic-book form.”

Orphan Black, which has just been renewed for a third season, centers on Sarah Manning, who after witnessing the suicide of a woman that appears to be her doppelgänger comes into the knowledge that this woman and indeed herself, are two of many biological clones. Sarah takes on the woman’s identity and uses her position as a police detective to uncover the mystery behind what she is and what that means.

IDW Publishing is known for its authenticity and attention to detail when approaching licensed properties and Orphan Black is sure to be a comic book series a delight existing fans and make new ones.

“We’re so thrilled for Orphan Black to take shape as a comic series and join the ranks of IDW’s impressive roster,” said John Young, Managing Director of Temple Street Productions. “Orphan Black was met with an enormous amount of enthusiasm at last year’s Comic-Con which really inspired us to give back to fans of the show through a medium so vital to the science fiction world.”

IDW will be working closely with the show’s producers to expand the Orphan Black world. The first cover image seen here is by artist Nick Runge. The full creative teams and series details will be announced soon, with the first comic-book series launching in early 2015. Striker Entertainment on behalf of Temple Street Productions brokered the deal.

  2. I love Orphan Black, but even I have to admit that there's no reason to create a comic book tie-in. There's absolutely no way that a comic can exist without convoluting the story even more than the second season already did.

  3. We don't know enough to say that. The series obviously won't be required reading, and it could very well be non-canonical, or simply add-in additional information the way that the Dunk and Egg book series adds background information to the main Game of Thrones novels.

  4. If non-canonical, why bother? That's just admitting that it's milking the cow.

If canonical, where does a comic book fit? With every episode taking place nearly back-to-back, with little to no breathing room, there's simply no place to say, "Hey, here's some less significant, but hopefully just as fun and exciting events!" The only conceivable thing could be done is a prequel, and just how interesting are things, pre-Beth's suicide? The only remotely interesting thing you could do there as further explore Helena's background, and there's only so much longevity there.

There's absolutely no reason for an Orphan Black comic, other than to prematurely milk what might be a cow. That said, I think there's only a few dollars in here.

  6. Totally disagree. There is SO much back story that has only been lightly "touched" on that expanding on it could be a great and very insightful thing! There's also the possibility to get more information not just on the past, but the everyday lives of the secondary characters. I mean I would love to know more about Art, Evil Angie, Paul, Donnie, ect, let alone if it would touch on prequel series elements or other clones out there!

  7. The past! The upbringing of the clones, the real history behind DYAD, the lives of the characters before and/or along side the show. The secondary characters also kind of get shafted so there's that. There's so much we don't know...just how many clones and/or kinds of clones are out there? What if there are other characters having experiences that relate to experiences/history of these character that we have never met and could potentially meet? There's a lot of ways to tie-in and/or expand on the universe.

This is only true if you're not the type of person who engages with fiction for the purpose of reading/watching an interesting story. If storytelling quality is what matters to you, the canonicity of a story shouldn't matter at all.

  9. If canonicity is irrelevant, you shouldn't have to piggyback on an established franchise, and potentially tarnish its reputation.

Why not just have a separate clone conspiracy comic that's admittedly inspired by Orphan Black?

I have no interest in seeing clone club drama that bears zero consequence on anything.

Case in point: Weak cash grab of a franchise that lacks an utter.
