Looks to child approved, like it's more about the love story and not the kinky stuff he is into. But let's see maybe they are teasing now and on the big screen it will be more of everything.
So here's looking at it from the POV of someone who has not read the books: it's a love story between a powerful guy and a shy girl and he is the one to pursue her and introduce her to a grown-up world. I know the kink should be in there somewhere, but I just don't see it. Not in the trailer, that is.
Pretty sure this is the morning show-approved version that aired on Today just a little while ago. Can't show all that kinky stuff when the kids are watching!
This looks like crap. I predict a flop at the theater, they picked some really wrong actors to play these roles. And that will be the reason the movie flops.
One of many reasons I also avoid the Mortal Instrument series even though my mom DVR'd the movie months ago (I'm really curious but I haven't given in).
I felt the same way about Mortal Instruments but the thing that turned most people off is a lie created by a different character. (Sorry that's so vague but I don't want to spoil anything)
Wait was that series fan fiction based on something existing that got turned into it's own book as well? For the record it's not an awful movie. But I have no interest whatsoever in watching the sequel (if it ever gets made).
I'm worried about how horribly inaccurate the book is about the lifestyle. That book and this movie is going to lead to so many misunderstandings. This could have been used as an opportunity to shed some light into a lifestyle that isn't nearly as bad as the ignorant think, but instead it's going to misrepresent it and cause more problems.
Nope thank you! I don't have read the books so I can't comment about the story, but seriously this trailer is awful. I really like Jamie Dornan (he's so great on The Fall) but I can't see the hot chemistry between the leads here.
I couldn't get through the whole book, it read too much like mediocre fanfiction for my taste, but the PoV is all wrong, this is not supposed to be about the romance...
Actually, The Mortal Instruments did NOT start out as fanfiction. Cassandra Clare did write Harry Potter fanfiction before she was a published author, but her fanfiction isn't the same material that ended up in her published books. She did use passages from other books in her fanfiction, but she didn't in The Mortal Instruments. I've read both so I should know.
I know she has a lot of haters from her fanfiction days, but I think it's unfair to compare the Mortal Instruments to Fifty Shades of Grey. Fifty Shades is the EXACT same text as EL James' fanfiction, just with the names changed (Bella became Ana, Edward became Christian etc). Mortal Instruments, while some could argue as having characters similair to Potter, is NOT Cassandra Clare's old fanfiction with names changed!
Why don't they just call this a porno and get it over with. There's nothing wrong with porn if that is your thing so why don't so many women fanning themselves and getting excited about this movie won't just admit it is porn already. They keep trying to say oh no the books are so good its a romance tale its not a pornographic film its a love story. Ahahahahah No. It's porn ladies just admit you want it because you think it looks sexy that's okay if you are fan of the books (I personally am not but I we all have our guilty pleasure be it a cheesy movie, tv show or book series). Stop trying to masquerade it as fantasy sexy "romance" material for horny housewives.
No its just poorly written. In fact the french probably language probably made it read as less trashy and poorly written then th original english version. And that reality is scary.
The book was awful. I kept pushing myself and couldn't go beyond half the book. Even though I tried to overcome the bad grammar and vocabulary, I just couldn't get past the fact that this book just pushes the whole women's liberation movement back by a 100 years! Seriously, that moment in the trailer when he's asking her about herself and her reply is "there's not much to know about me... look at me" ... maybe it's just editing but come on, if in the 21st century we have movies where women doubt themselves in front of men who just stare to appear dominant, then we still have a VERY long way to go! :-(
Reading the book was a torture. I finished it because I hate leaving books unfinished but it took a lot of strength.
This movie looks decent. As long as they removed the inner goddess bs and some things that don't make any sense it could be ok. I think it's hilarious how the fans of the book trashed Dakota's casting when I think she's actually perfect for Ana. Ana is supposed to be pretty but not sexy or stunning. Also Anna is incredible insecure so I think Dakota is playing the role like she is supposed to. Jamie Dornan seems the be the one miscast but maybe the director took the character down a notch so it doesn't come across as a psycho like in the book.
What makes a movie trailer good and awesome¿?... definetly the soundtrack... i havent read the book but a friend told me what is it about and the song made this trailer 100 times better than it actually is...
I work in a bookstore, and I was amazed at how many women would come in and ask, in a whisper, where these books were, or they'd be trying to hide the fact that they're standing in the section flipping through the book. And I'm just watching them and thinking, "Seriously, this is one of our top-selling books here, you aren't the first woman to buy this nor will you be the last, you really don't need to hide anything." I will say, though, that the constant use of the "mommy porn" phrase that gets thrown around when discussing books like this, or other various erotica, does tend to give off a public insinuation that women should feel some sort of shame for even being interested in such things, the implication that it's just bored housewives whose husbands aren't fulfilling them who read stuff like this. So that probably explains a big part of why women are so quick to brush it up as some sort of "romantic" tale instead of what you note it basically actually is. The thing is, though, the assumption about the sorts of women who read such books couldn't be further from the truth, first off, and even if that was accurate...so what? Are people who say things like that implying housewives should stop being interested in crazy sex and entertaining "silly" sexual fantasies now that they're married or something? I don't get it. Mind, from the excerpts of this series that I've read, I think women could find much better erotica out there to get them going, and I think there's very fair complaints to be made about the Christian character in particular. But a woman just reading an erotic book in and of itself shouldn't be cause for mocking, and yet, unfortunately, in some people's eyes, it is.
I've only read excerpts online, and blogs from people who get into the nitty gritty of what all happens in the books. Doesn't sound like my sort of thing at all (the "inner goddess" crap alone would be enough to make me back away). Which poses some difficulty at where I work, because I've had people come in and ask about the series and how good it is, and given I haven't read it and don't really have any interest in doing so, well... I usually just wind up telling them that it's a big seller and a lot of people have been raving about it. That seems to work.
The book isn't worth reading (there are better erotic books out there) but I read it because I was curious and sometimes the internet blows up things out of proportion. The book is terrible but not for the things people usually said. The idea for the story isn't bad the problem is the execution. Ana is too naive for her age and it comes off as unrealistic and sometimes very stupid. Christian acts like a psycho half of the time and the relationship isn't a healthy one. Still Christian never rapes her or anything like that like some haters claim. Actually he sometimes asks her a lot of the times if she is sure about sleeping with him or going to the red room and she always agrees and enjoys it.
I totally get why the book is a best seller. There's barely no porn for women and this book comes from a legit publisher instead of those erotic books with the incredible cheesy covers.
The stigma attached to this series of books that causes some women to be embarrassed about purchasing this book or even admitting to reading it is exactly why I think this movie will be a box office flop. If people are embarrassed to walk into a book store, how likely are they to walk into a crowded theatre to see this movie? On the other hand, I think the DVD sales will be very successful.
Fifty Shades of Grey was originally written as Masters of the Universe, a Twilight fanfiction that was posted online. The characters were based on those from Twilight.
That's just... sad... on so many levels I don't know where to start... Don't get me wrong, I have great admiration for fanfic writters, over the years I have come across many very talented ones that deserved to be published, but from what I read this not even descent fanfiction... I was always happy I decided to buy only the first book in case I didn't like it, lol.
Yeah, the stuff with Ana and Christian as characters was the big complaint I saw, too, from the people who talked about it. And I too noticed the lack of outright rape and whatnot-he's a controlling guy in many ways, absolutely, and he's not exactly best boyfriend material in my eyes, but in terms of sex the two did seem to have a genuine understanding of what the other was going for.
Like you said, done right, a story like this could be very intriguing-power dynamics, exploration of kinky sex and its positive/negative effects on the couple, seeing people go outside their comfort zones, etc. Unfortunately, we get this weirdness instead.
Good question. I'm wondering about that, too. Granted, it seems they're toning down a lot of stuff to make it widely available, so that might help...but even then, I do wonder about that as well. Guess we'll see in the near future! I'm actually kind of interested to observe how that plays out.
NOTE: Name-calling, personal attacks, spamming, excessive self-promotion, condescending pomposity, general assiness, racism, sexism, any-other-ism, homophobia, acrophobia, and destructive (versus constructive) criticism will get you BANNED from the party.
Oh woah...
ReplyDeleteWell now..
ReplyDeleteNot quite how I imagined it from the book
ReplyDeleteLooks to child approved, like it's more about the love story and not the kinky stuff he is into. But let's see maybe they are teasing now and on the big screen it will be more of everything.

ReplyDeleteUgh, this movie (and the books).
ReplyDeleteThis looks like crap. I predict a flop at the theater, they picked some really wrong actors to play these roles. And that will be the reason the movie flops.
ReplyDeleteAs huge fan and avid reader of Fanfiction, this book and this movie piss me off like no other thing has done it >(
ReplyDeleteOne of many reasons I also avoid the Mortal Instrument series even though my mom DVR'd the movie months ago (I'm really curious but I haven't given in).
ReplyDeleteThe only thing I'm looking forward to is Beyonce's new version of her song Crazy In Love.
ReplyDeleteI can't wait for the Honest Trailer!
ReplyDeleteI felt the same way about Mortal Instruments but the thing that turned most people off is a lie created by a different character. (Sorry that's so vague but I don't want to spoil anything)
ReplyDeleteCan't see any chemistry between the leads!!This is a disaster waiting to happen!! Poor sheriff!!!
ReplyDeleteWait was that series fan fiction based on something existing that got turned into it's own book as well? For the record it's not an awful movie. But I have no interest whatsoever in watching the sequel (if it ever gets made).
ReplyDeletePorn. That will just be porn.
ReplyDeleteAlright hell yeah! Totally gonna be watchin this opening day!
ReplyDeleteYup, it's started out Harry Potter fic and then she changed names. Cassandra Clare also has a history of plagiarism and is not well liked.
ReplyDeleteWow I never knew that. Cheers! I definitely won't be checking out the sequel now lol
ReplyDeleteI can't believe I actually watched that. Her wardrobe at the beginning reminds me of Mandy Moore in Walk to Remember.
ReplyDeleteI'm worried about how horribly inaccurate the book is about the lifestyle. That book and this movie is going to lead to so many misunderstandings. This could have been used as an opportunity to shed some light into a lifestyle that isn't nearly as bad as the ignorant think, but instead it's going to misrepresent it and cause more problems.
ReplyDeleteah.. right... I forgot Cassandra Clare was first breaking major fandom rules :/
ReplyDeleteNope thank you! I don't have read the books so I can't comment about the story, but seriously this trailer is awful. I really like Jamie Dornan (he's so great on The Fall) but I can't see the hot chemistry between the leads here.
ReplyDeleteWas that Beyonce? She sounds really different.
ReplyDeleteAnd there is that. :/
ReplyDeleteTotally not capturing the images from the books when I was ready them...save me a movie ticket...I'll stick to my screen of imagination.
ReplyDeleteHahahaha.
ReplyDeleteI couldn't get through the whole book, it read too much like mediocre fanfiction for my taste, but the PoV is all wrong, this is not supposed to be about the romance...

Rant over.
Well, technically it IS mediocre fanfiction.. ;)
ReplyDeleteI'd swear this was a Skinemax trailer but they'd be too cheap to pay for a Beyonce track.
ReplyDeleteIt's so tame it could be used in flood control.
ReplyDeleteLOOOOVED IT!! I think the cast was perfect!!, this is my Christian Grey!!, let's hope the performances are good too.
ReplyDeleteWhy don't they just call this a porno and get it over with. What do you mean? It's a badly written book, kind of like Twilight. Well, there are a lot of badly written books this days...
ReplyDeleteWhat makes a movie trailer good and awesome¿?... definetly the soundtrack... i havent read the book but a friend told me what is it about and the song made this trailer 100 times better than it actually is...

I'm laughing because you basically hit the nail on the head... It was originally written as Twilight fanfiction.
ReplyDeleteThe book isn't worth reading (there are better erotic books out there) but I read it because I was curious and sometimes the internet blows up things out of proportion. ReplyDeleteFifty Shades of Grey was originally written as Masters of the Universe, a Twilight fanfiction that was posted online. The characters were based on those from Twilight.
ReplyDeleteThen EL James decided to publish the books so she changed the title and the character names (Bella became Ana, Edward became Christian, Jacob became José, Rosalie became Kate etc).
So the reason it reads like mediocre Twilight-y fanfiction is because that's exactly what it is ;)
I literally don't know what to say...
ReplyDeleteThat's just... sad... on so many levels I don't know where to start...

ReplyDeleteTwo frozen trouts have more sex-appeal than these two . Laughable. This movie will be a serious contender for the razzie award.
ReplyDelete
