MOVIES: Doctor Strange - May join the Avengers + Will hear casting news relatively quickly

"It does make sense [to have standalone franchises], but I don't think it makes sense for this character, who has clearly woven in and out of that stuff [The Avengers] in the comics," Marvel head Kevin Feige told IGN when we spoke to him in advance of the release of Guardians of the Galaxy recently. "We have a template. There's a template for everything we do, which are the comics. Strange goes back and forth. Guardians less so, actually, until recently. But if there's a character like that who clearly interweaves over the course of many stories, I find no reason to go, 'We're not going to do that in the movies. We're going to keep him in his own movies.' So there's always the potential for it [Strange to join The Avengers]."

As to when we might hear some casting news for the character, Feige says "relatively quickly."

"I don't know if it'll be as quick as next Saturday," he added. "But it'll be relatively quickly."

  1. Dr. Strange does have history, with the Avengers. But more so with the Defenders, which he founded.

  2. Please not Benedict Cumberbatch- he can play a villain, just not Strange.

  3. A few of the names tossed around could do the job, but I would prefer someone other than an A-list face personally. Someone not already the face of a franchise or series....

Timothy Omundson certainly has the look to me!
Vincent Cassel could be fun and could do his own stunts!
Meh, they will likely go with a more familiar face....

  4. I Think Orlando Bloom Would Be A Great Doctor Strange.

  5. Yeah he would probably do well....
He's one of the names I've read people suggest along with some others like Johnny Depp, John Hamm, Joseph Fiennes.....

  6. Come on Gary Busey! *crosses fingers*

  7. Bwahahahaha! XD
Why not Crispin Glover, Lyle Lovett or Christopher Walken?
    They're some strange folks! XD

  8. Even though I'm familiar with Doctor Strange, when I saw this title the image of Busey rating and raving at a brick wall for ninety minutes while wearing a lab coat popped into my head.

  9. I disagree about Depp. His last several characters have been the same. Edward Scissorhands, Captain Jack Sparrow, Tonto. They all have the same personality, and that's not Dr. Strange.

  10. I'm not saying I want Depp or those actors, just I have heard fans or articles mentioning them for the role. I think they all could pull off the role in their own way... just not sure I would love it.

It seems like lately when Depp gets a role you know exactly how the character will play on screen... I dislike that too. He used to show his range from time to time. He needs to restart his career I think...

A few of the more intriguing actors I have seen mentioned (by fans) were Pierce Brosnan, Rufus Sewell, and Jean Dujardin. I would love if an actor with real acting chops got the role! Others I read were Patrick Dempsey, Benedict Cumberbatch, Timothy Olyphant, Viggo Mortensen, Oded Fehr.... I forget who else...

I'm not a huge fan exactly, but I did read some of my grandpa's Dr Strange comics when I was young.(he had some from early 60's I think?) I thought it was a fun and unique character compared to so many of the typical heroes in cartoons or comics etc. The good thing is that I'm not casting the part so I just have to deal with whoever comes out in the role! XD

  11. I've seen some of his rants..
Simply amazing in a scary and bizarre - "Why is he not locked up?" - kind of manner XD

Prayer circle for Marvel NOT casting Benedict Cumberbatch. Or, really, any of the media's frontrunners for the part.

  13. Being reminded f him after seeing him on Covert Affairs, I think Marton Csokas could be a very interesting Dr Strange! I doubt he will be cast though since they may want more of a "name" actor....

He has that sense of mystery and menace about him and certainly looks the part. Linked his IMDB profile and a couple pics...

  14. I've never seen the show. He looks the part, but i know nothing about his range.

I knew that. I probably should of said i disagree with those saying it. :)

Benedict Cumberbatch is great in Sherlock. But i've never seen him in anything else, that i remember. So i don't know. Viggo Mortensen, and Timothy Olphant would be great choices. This is the first time, i've heard Pierce Brosnan's name mentioned. An interesting choice. I don't know those others off hand, so...

"I'm not a huge fan.. or even a big enough fan to really know his
personality honestly, but I did read some of my grandpa's Dr Strange
comics when I was young.(he had some from early 60's I think?)."

Ouch. I started reading him in the 70s and 80s, when i was a little boy. I was a Defenders fan (in the 70s), because of The Hulk. Dr. Strange was their leader. Yes i'm up there in age (50, almost), and a grandpa too. :)

  16. Well, we were reading the comics near the same time then honestly!

I would get bored at my grandparents when I was young and snoop into the boxes in the closet. I think the comics were most likely to be one of his kids, my uncles. They were born in the early 40's or the mid 50's so the dates fit. Most of the comics were from the 50's and 60's as I recall.

I don't recall Defenders in the boxes... Fantastic 4, Archie, Amazing Spider-Man, either some early X-Men or Avengers or both, and I think Captain Marvell? Did he wear a red costume with blue and a yellow star? XD

I never got too into them when I was young honestly, but when I was in my teens I did start collecting Hellblazer and Green Arrow: Longbow Hunters comics for maybe 6 months or so. I always preferred books and video to comics personally.

We are not too far apart in age.. I'm... mid-40's myself. How odd that I had to pause and actually recall my age for a second....
