Marvel is excited to announce an all-new era for the God of Thunder in brand new series, THOR, written by Jason Aaron complimented with art from Russell Dauterman.
This October, Marvel Comics evolves once again in one of the most shocking and exciting changes ever to shake one of the “big three” of Captain American, Iron Man and Thor. No longer is the classic Thunder God able to hold the mighty hammer, Mjölnir, and a brand new female hero will emerge worthy of the name THOR.

Huh...interesting. That's really all I have to say about it. We'll see where it goes.
ReplyDeleteAn interesting take, though they probably will offend fans, if the male Thor is not able to pick up Mjölnir anymore. Maybe they should find a different spin to introduce her, but apart from that it loos very promising.
ReplyDeleteCould be neat, but I kind of hope it still ties into classic Thor(s) in some way. Kind of seek of reboots instead of spin offs.

ReplyDeleteShe's not a female version of Thor, she's apparently the one and only Thor. A recast. The original doesn't exist now. Unworthy.
Strange decision. Thor is male, and will always be male. Marvel can butcher the character in comics but this new Thor isn't Thor. He's a God in Norse mythology. That's not going to change.
I'm not even a comic fan and think this is ridiculous. if she replaces Thor in the movies I'd die laughing.
I could understand it if it was like in DC comics where we know that every incarnation is a part of their multi-universe, but this seems really thoughtless....
ReplyDeleteThere's some contradictory reports about the new Thor. Quotes from the author seem to imply that its more than a temporary change. The "original" is deemed unworthy and she takes over the mantle of Thor. She basically becomes Thor.
ReplyDeleteWhy are they doing this? Here's a snippet from Marvel's press release:
"THOR is the latest in the ever-growing and long list of female-centric titles that continues to invite new readers into the Marvel Universe. This female THOR is the 8th title to feature a lead female protagonist and aims to speak directly to an audience that long was not the target for Super Hero comic books in America: women and girls."
I think this means female Thor is here to stay.
Interesting idea, but I don't like it. I'm hoping they don't call her Thor and that they give her a different name. She's getting the powers that Thor had, but she is not THE Thor. Confusing? Is the name Thor given to anyone that can hold the power of the hammer?

ReplyDeleteReally? Marvel doesn't think that many girls/women might resent such a blatant attempt to manipulate them? There are various Nordic goddesses --such as Skadi, goddess of vengeance and the hunt -- they could have used instead, if they felt they needed a new female superhero.
ReplyDeleteThat's stupid. Sorry, but if the legend dictates that whoever is worthy will be able to hold Mjölnir, then that's one thing. But why does holding the hammer equate to renaming that person too? It's not like Thor is a designation, like Captain America or Iron Man. Thor is a name. It's like calling someone else "Steve Rogers", just because that person has all of the abilities. I could see calling that new Mjölnir-holder, the new "Thunder God", but not renaming HER into Thor, a male-ish name.

ReplyDeleteI would count on it. Spider-Oc and Peter Parker's death was suppose to be permanent too. Comics have done countless replacements over the years, and almost always go back to the original, eventually. The Punisher, Batman, Spiderman twice, just to name a few.
ReplyDeleteI doubt they'd promote a female Thor, supposedly to "speak directly" to a female audience, and then revert back to the original when he becomes worthy again. That would be very cynical, even for a publicity stunt.
ReplyDeleteIf sales take a nosedive they will. Personally, i love strong female characters. That said, i believe this is a mistake. Thor is a name, not a title. If they want someone to take his place a the god of thunder, ok. But use a different name. How about Thunderstrike, the original is dead, so why not?
