Joe Quesada took to The Colbert Report, as he has many times before, for another Captain America themed announcement. This time, Marvel Entertainment's Chief Creative Officer and former Editor-in-Chief came not to just give Stephen Colbert a replica of the Shield, but to announce who would be next to hold that shield in the pages of the comics.
Yes, as we've reported repeatedly, Sam Wilson, he who has been The Falcon, will take up the shield, the title, and the costume of Captain America.
"I don't have to tell you that the world is falling apart under Barack Obama's leadership," Colbert said. "We're losing one of our greatest leaders, Captain America. He won our hearts back in 1941 by punching Hitler in the face!
"Unfortunately, Cap's days of protecting America are numbered," the host said. He caught his viewers up on recent events in Captain America, which saw him lose the Super Soldier serum and age "65 years. Meaning his new super serum will be Ensure," he joked. "With Steve Rogers brought low there's a huge void in the Captaining of America. Who among us is prepared to step in?"

what is going on! first a female thor and now replacing CA!
ReplyDeleteI suspect these new announcements are due to Marvels legal issues with the Kirby Estate. They want to get ownership of some of Marvels key characters which Jack Kirby helped create. They include the initial Avengers roster, the initial X-Men roster, the Fantastic 4 and Hulk (and the villains included in those titles).
ReplyDeleteLeaks/Reports suggest that Marvel wants to downplay the X-Men and the Fantastic 4. With rumors suggesting that they have considered going as far as replacing them completely with the Inhumans and the FF. While the initial/core Avengers are starting to be replaced. Ant-Man, Thor and Captain America have been replaced so far.
It's not the first time Cap's shield were carried by someone else. When Rogers died durong the Civil War, he was replaced by the Winter Soldier. So, not really a legal thing, just a plot twist leading to the new Avengers movie. Something like the Spider-Ock story arc that ended when the Amazing Spider-Man 2 movie was out.
ReplyDeleteWhat will this mean for the new Avengers movie and ones after it? Will they be recasting?
ReplyDeleteNope, it doesn't affect the MCU at all.
ReplyDeleteGo Sam!
ReplyDeleteThat's all that matters to me.
ReplyDeleteGood, as long as it doesn't affect the movies, I don't care. Although the whole female Thor thing came out of left field. As a woman, I'm all in for women taking power, but it just doesn't sit well with me.
ReplyDeleteMight be, but, IMO, all they want is a long-lasting source of money, which means they have to introduce more characters and change things up a bit. Hence what they did with X-Men (brilliant way out, they can redo the entire franchise if they see fit, thanks to the last movie).
ReplyDeleteEvans had originally agreed to three CA movies, plus two Avengers. That's what we'll get, apparently. But there always were plans to replace him (IMO, that's why both Falcon and the Winter Soldier were introduced) and keep the story moving forward.
Besides, by having Falcon as Captain, audiences knowing he was initially another superhero, they keep the door opened for a possible Evans return, if and when that works out, and CA's replacement can go back to his original post.
It's a win-win.
not liking these changes much at all... I know that in the comics that there had been others who had assumed the mantle of CA for one reason or another before, (including Sam Wilson) but it was never for an long period of time and Steve Rogers eventually resumed his role. Just as long as these changes are contained to he comics and do not affect the movies, that would be better
