Gotham - TCA 2014 Panel Spoilers

Thanks to Nirat for the heads up.

“You have to front-load the pilot with the best that you’ve got. You have to open big,” executive producer Bruno Heller (formerly of The Mentalist) said Sunday at the Television Critics Assoc. summer press tour in Beverly Hills.

As the season progresses, “We’ll be far more careful with how we roll out the villains and in what way,” he continued. (Season 1 is “very much about the rise of Penguin (played by Robin Lord Taylor) and his titanic struggle with Fish Mooney (Jada Pinkett Smith),” Heller noted.)

Meanwhile, there will be a decidable lack of iconic superheroes in the drama, seeing as Bruce Wayne (Touch‘s David Mazouz) is just a young child.

“If there is a superhero in the show, it’s [the city of] Gotham,” Heller explained. “It’s a larger-than-life character. … Heroes are more interesting than superheroes. Superheroes do the impossible and drama is really about the physically possible. This is about people and people trying to overcome real problems as opposed to trying to learn how to fly.”

The EP isn’t worried that Batman’s absence will drive fanboys away because “the really interesting parts of these stories is the origin stories. This is about how all these people got there.”

"The first year is very much about the rise of The Penguin and his titanic struggle with Fish Mooney," Heller tells reports during "Gotham's" panel at the 2014 summer TV press tour. The fact that he's associated with Mooney is what's most interesting, considering she's not an existing character in the DC Universe. "She's a new part of the mythology," Heller adds while not saying how long she'll actually last in the story.

As for the man portraying The Penguin, Robin Lord Taylor, he admits to being a huge fan of "Batman Returns" as a kid, and Danny DeVito's portrayal of The Penguin, which was his biggest exposure to the character. "As a kid, I didn't read many of the comic books," he says, "but now [I'm] going back and researching Penguin to see what his deal is."

  1. I hope this show's Penguin is closer to the comics. Despite the fact I loved Batman Returns it's a really poor adaptation of most characters.

  2. As someone who has seen the Gotham-pilot i would say Penguin is the strongest thing about that pilote, while there are alot of teasing in the pilot they also have a good few moments with other characters. I really like the show, and i hope it will stay intact after pilot.

  3. Good to know. I'm really excited for this show and I'm one those people who understands how this show can work without Batman. There's plenty of juicy back stories for many villains and the GPD has a lot of interesting storylines and characters in the comics.

  4. Very excited for the show, I'm really looking forward to seeing this Penguin as well as Strange and Arkham. Heck I'm looking forward to the whole show and I'm hoping they do these characters justice in whatever way they choose to tell their stories.
