HBO CONFIRMS NEW CAST MEMBERS FOR FIFTH SEASON OF GAME OF THRONES

SAN DIEGO, July 25, 2014 – HBO has confirmed some of the new cast members for the fifth season of the hit series GAME OF THRONES, with many of them appearing in a video that was unveiled today at Comic-Con International: San Diego 2014.

Among the new actors and the characters they will portray are:
Alexander Siddig as Doran Martell. Doran Martell is the ruling lord of Dorne and older brother to the late Prince Oberyn Martell. Unlike his brother, Doran is even-tempered and deliberate. Now, all of Dorne waits to see how their lord will react to his brother’s death.

Toby Sebastian as Trystane Martell. Trystane Martell is Prince Doran’s son and heir to Dorne. His father betrothed him to Myrcella Baratheon as part of the alliance offered by Tywin Lannister, then Hand of the King.
Nell Tiger Free as Myrcella Baratheon. Myrcella Baratheon is officially the eldest child of Cersei Lannister and the late King Robert Baratheon, though in truth her father is Cersei’s own brother, Jaime Lannister. For years, she has been a guest and ward of Prince Doran, betrothed to his son, but her position has become tenuous with the death of Oberyn Martell, the Prince’s brother.

DeObia Oparei as Areo Hotah. Areo Hotah is the long-serving captain of Doran Martell’s palace guard, renowned for his loyalty and his longaxe.
Enzo Cilenti as Yezzan. Yezzan was an extremely wealthy slave trader before Daenerys Targaryen outlawed the slave trade.

Jessica Henwick as Nymeria (“Nym”) Sand. Nym Sand is the second eldest of the late Prince Oberyn’s bastard daughters. Her mother was an Eastern noblewoman who brought Nym up to be cultured, graceful and deadly with a whip.
Rosabell Laurenti Sellers as Tyene Sand. Tyene Sand is the daughter of the late Prince Oberyn Martell by Ellaria Sand, his final paramour. Tyene is fiercer than she looks, especially with her twin daggers.

Keisha Castle-Hughes as Obara Sand. A fearsome warrior, Obara Sand is the eldest bastard daughter of the late Prince Oberyn Martell. Her mother was a Dornish peasant girl who caught the eye of the late Prince.

Jonathan Pryce as the High Sparrow. A devout and pious man, the High Sparrow came to King’s Landing to serve those forgotten by much of the world – the poor, the downtrodden and the infirm – and quickly amassed a large following. His fellow believers have swarmed over the city, ministering to the lowest and decrying the corruption of the highest.

Based on the bestselling fantasy book series by George R.R. Martin, GAME OF THRONES is an epic drama set in the world of Westeros, where ambitious men and women of both honor and ill-repute live in a land whose summers and winters can last years. The Emmy®- and Golden Globe-winning fantasy series concluded its ten-episode fourth season in June, with the fifth season scheduled to launch in 2015.

Cast regulars for the fourth season of GAME OF THRONES included: Emmy® and Golden Globe winner Peter Dinklage, Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, Lena Headey, Emilia Clarke, Charles Dance, Aidan Gillen, Jack Gleeson, Kit Harington, Diana Rigg, Sophie Turner, Maisie Williams, Isaac Hempstead Wright, Alfie Allen, Jerome Flynn, Conleth Hill, John Bradley, Gwendoline Christie, Liam Cunningham, Stephen Dillane, Natalie Dormer, Iain Glen, Kristofer Hivju, Sibel Kekilli, Rose Leslie, Rory McCann, Michael McElhatton, Iwan Rheon and Carice van Houten.

Season four credits: The executive producers of GAME OF THRONES are David Benioff, D.B. Weiss, Carolyn Strauss, Frank Doelger and Bernadette Caulfield; co-executive producers, Guymon Casady, Vince Gerardis and George R.R. Martin; producers, Chris Newman and Greg Spence.

  1. Sand Snakes! Interesting mix there.

  2. If I remember correctly he plays a mysterious role in Da Vinci's Demons.

  3. Fan favorite Siddig cast!
That's nice for everyone isn't it?

The rest are quite different than book descriptions, but in the end I'm sure I will enjoy them one and all!

Ok, now to the worrying bit...
No mention of Griff, Euron or Victarion Greyjoy, or Arianne Martell!

I still do not rule out one or all of the mentioned cast turing up later as production continues, but for now... I am a bit worried. It would be a huge departure from the books to omit those chracters.

Part of me also is happy if the series moves away from the books though if I am honest.
It allows me to view the two mediums as completely different stories and to not have the TV series spoil the books for me!

  4. Indeed he does.
Random appearances though... Ind of pops up in dreams or hallucinations etc. At least as Doran he will be a recurring role we can count on!

  5. So we still don't know if Indira Varma will be back as Ellaria Sand?

  6. Just like GRRM said on the panel. "gently dissuades fans from thinking the books are the "true" form of #GameofThrones story. Both are fiction, both are true."

  7. IF most opinions are correct, Ellaria is in one of the Sand snake audtions. I woudl assume she will be back.

I think she may take on some of Arianne or Nymeria's tasks and traits from the books.

  8. That's how I see it, but I won't lie... I see the books as "more" true since they are they original form of the saga.

That does not stop me from enjoying the show for what it is though!
At least, not now. All the changes used to bother me a few years ago!

  9. Still can't forget reading the novelization of Star Wars and Luke thinking about Hot Chocolate on the Millennium Falcon. lol

  10. I've heard that, and that would make sense. I'd just like to see some confirmation. You'd think since her daughters are involved that Ellaria would at least be around at least as much as she was in season four.

  11. Well in the books Obara, Nymeria, Tyenne (and the cut role of Sarella) are not Ellaria's daughters at all. They are all from affairs before Oberyn met Ellaria.

In the show it looks like they changed it so that Tyene is the natural daughter of Oberyn and Ellaria though! The older two Sand Snakes are Obern's bastard daughters from previous affairs still as far as I can tell.

  12. No Arianne...
    AND
They refer to Trystane as the "heir to Dorne" basically ruling out Arianne and Quentyn.
    Sad that!

  13. Um.... Tyene is /not/ the daughter of Oberyn and Ellaria! And what the hell with Trystane being heir and not Arianne?!

    ReplyDelete
  14. That's unfortunate. I could take or leave Quentyn, but of all the legitimate Martell heirs I found Arianne's story the most compelling in the books. Oh well.

  15. I think you have to be right in that some of the cast will be revealed later. I don't remember is the Maggy report a rumor or an actual spoiler? I can't imagine going forward (especially the wall stuff) without The Greyjoys, and then the Griffs, ect. LOL do you Theon is somehow going to ask for "so and so's" hand in Marriage instead???

    ReplyDelete
  16. Me too!
It was interesting and refreshing to have a female heir to a kingdom! Dorne is renowned for its equality and to omit that aspect from the series is a tragedy.

  17. The way I see it could possibly play out without Victarion, Euron, and Griff...

    - Tyrion will have a more direct route to Meereen and no sea voyage. At least not much of one. No Victarion or Moqorro then.

    - Daario already supplied Dany the fleet and the show could cut out the dragon horn. IF they do want to use the dragon horn Illyrio, Varys or Daario could supply it easily enough. That means no Victarion in her arc as well.

    - When/ if Balon dies.... Yara will take the Seastone Chair and rule the Iron Islands. That supplies a female ruler aspect they lose with cutting Arianne and gets rid of the entire Kraken storyline. No Euron, Victarion or Aeron.

    - Trystane will take on parts of Arianne's role and Aegon's role. Some of the Seven Kingdoms houses could support Trystane instead of Aegon. He could later try to marry Dany. Removing the 3 or 4 possible alliances through marriage and making it just one possibility streamlines things greatly. That removes Quentyn, Aegon, and the Greyscale arc as well.

    - Trystane and Obara will be leads in the Queenmaker plot. That makes cutting Arianne easier when combined with the Sand Snaked and Ellaria doing some of the other actions of Arianne in the books.

I'm not saying I am a fan of these ideas... Just saying I think they could work and could explain the lack of news on certain characters. It would also put all the arcs through the 5 released books at the end of this upcoming season. That is imperative if D&D want to complete the series in seven years.

    ReplyDelete
  18. Ya I could see how that could work out that way! Thanks for taking the time though to go threw how you think that could work!

    ReplyDelete
  19. Thanks.
Just some theories based on other people's ideas and my own...

The one thing I still have no idea on is whether or not Trystane will get sent to Meereen to take Quentyn's place. If he does he could intersect with Tyrion's arc. He could be part of the mercenary group that captures Tyrion much like Quentyn was in the Windblown.

It actually starts to terrify me that Weiss and Benioff apparently don't know that High Sparrow isn't the actual title of the character. He's High Septon, only Cersei calls him High Sparrow in her POV chapters because sparrow flooding King's Landing demanded him being elected High Septon.

But I think generally Weiss and Benioff aren't very bright when the depth of the story is concerned. Their decisions are a proof enough of that. They don't seem to understand the whole point of the POV chapters and how that affects the narrative or the information you get. If they don't even understand how important it is to have one kingdom in Westeros (Dorne) where women are basically equal to men in the matter of succession. They seem to center everything on the male side without an apparent reason. It seems the trend of being more popular means things get more and more shitty and mediocre is present in GoT too. Duh, right?
