  2. I'm still not entirely certain why they didn't keep Griffiths and just took her character into another direction and revealed her to be 'this` character (there're enough ways to do that). But I suppose there were enough behind the scenes reasons as to why she got booted.

All I know is that THIS casting came incredibly fast

  3. I'm still pissed about Lucy Griffiths but I'll do my best not to hold it against Angelica Celaya. I hope this works out well.

  4. Apparently "Officially, creative choice. Writers felt she didn't have enough purpose or agency as a character." and "CONSTANTINE"s "friends drop like flies" -David Goyer @ how they'll write out the uncast Lucy Griffiths." I probably won't be watching the show.

  5. were there signs about Griffiths exiting beforehand? I'm still trying to wrap my head around this quick casting.

When did we hear about the recast? 3 or 4 days ago if my memory serves right. Casting takes a LOT longer than that, especially casting for leads

Me too! she was the reason why I was checking it out. I'll check the opinions here after the first episode airs, and then I'll decide if I give it chance.
    Still, great for her.

  7. I believe the exit was announced Thursday but I'm guessing that it was in the works awhile before that because, like you said, casting someone just days later is highly unlikely. Completing a significant narrative change and a casting within days of letting a lead go without delaying production is akin to waving a magic wand.

  8. She was in a telenovela called Alguien te Mira (Someone's Watching You) and she was really good. I didn't expect to see her on an american show though.

  9. Yeah, I was looking forward to it, but if this is how they treat a character that was supposed to be main (as in, write her off rather than make an effort to write BETTER for her) then I'm probably not going to watch it either.

  10. I saw the pilot and liked the potential that RG's character had, and am wondering how the writer's will close her arc and open up this character I just hope the shift will feel organic and not so noticable....

  11. Looks like solid casting. Though making Zed a latina is new and rather interesting (and works supprisingly well with her "evangelical family" backstory). I'm convinced this casting change can only bring good things for the show as Lucy Griffith's Liv was a bit of wet blanket on the pilot. Zed's introduction in the comic was a very important issue that also introduced us to Constantine's sister Cheryl and niece Gemma. There are many interesting ways you can adapt that story from the late 80's UK setting to the US today.

  12. Zed was a really great character and this actress fits the bill, this is only going to improve the show and the storyline, I am really excited.

  13. I like Griffith's character in the pilot personally...
It was nice to have a character not know what they are doing for a change of pace. So many lead roles today are the best at their job or badass in one way or another and Liv was a refreshing change of pace.

Now it seems we have yet another badass character as a lead. It feels like networks are almost afraid to have a non-badass female lead these days...

  14. Liv was the weakest thing about the pilot, so I won't miss her. Being around Constantine has never exactly been the safest place to be, so killing her off would be fitting. The Hellblazer comics get pretty damn dark.

  15. Also, fans of the comic book want a good adaptation of their stories and characters, and inserting a new character instead of using one from the actual source material is annoying.

Whereas fans on this site and probably other entertainment sites were more interested in seeing this for the actress Lucy Griffiths than any great interest in the source material. (That's not a diss or anything, I also am guilty of being led to a show because an actor I"m fond of is in it.)

Those of us who aren't that familiar with her don't particularly care that she's leaving the series.

  16. Most fans..
Hellblazer is the one and only comic I ever collected.

I randomly picked Hellblazer #1 when it first came out in 1987 or 1988 after a suggestion from the cashier and continued collecting/reading them for about 2 years. At the time I worked at a bar a block away from a collectibles/ comic book shop.. When I changed jobs my collecting stopped. Graphic novels just do not move me the way film and TV does... I guess I was a casual fan maybe, but still a fan.

I liked Liv exactly because she was something fresh and different from the comics and many other shows on now. She seemed to fit well within the Constantine world I thought.

I'm not writing it off now because of the change, nor was I invested in the character, but I had I actually enjoyed her (or the premise of her) in the pilot. Oh well, if they stick to the books she will just be one in a line of dead acquaintances for Constantine.
