Character Cup - Round 1A
14 Jul 2014
2014 Character Cup 24: Live Another Day Cancelled Shows Chicago PD Graceland Nikita Parks and Recreation Sherlock The MentalistNote - Polls close around 2 pm CST Monday.
It's finally time to begin and I hope you guys are as excited about this contest as I am. The goal is for us to pass the hiatus time with great TV talk and loads of fun. Alas in every internet contest ever, there are always things that come up and ruin the fun for everyone. In an attempt to shoot for the stars and miraculously avoid these, here are the rules:
1. The Aliens Haven't Landed. There's No Conspiracy Here - I have no hidden agenda. Everything is placed in brackets based on number of nominations and ranking polls. If your favorite show goes against a giant, it's nothing personal. There's also no secret underground of people cheating polls. Nobody gets paid for that so nobody has time for that. Especially since this contest means absolute squat. It's just for fun.
2. Leave Sour Grapes on the Vine - Yeah, it sucks when your favorite gets kicked off by a show you hate. Yep, the winning character will come from the most organized fandom that works the hardest to get the word out. Them's the facts of life and internet, folks. It doesn't mean we can't have fun. So discuss why you love your favorite instead of vetching about life's unfairness and bringing down the room. I promise we'll all have more fun that way.
3. It's Not 2048 and My Name's Not Dorian - I will do my very best to keep the contest running smoothly and let you know the approximate time each poll ends. However, I occasionally do silly things like put the wrong date on a poll so it doesn't end the exact time I thought. Again see #1. Let me know and I'll fix it. I apologize in advance for any technical difficulties.
4. Comments are the Wellspring of Hiatus Life - Most of us anxiously await a favorite show's return and if you're like me, right about now is when I start feeling the wait the most. Why not distract yourself with a little TV talk? So explain your voting choices. What is your favorite thing about a character? Your favorite character arc? What are your hopes for him or her? The conversation is endless as long as someone starts it.
Nuts and Bolts -
1. All polls, even the final one, will be about 24 hours long. A new poll goes up every day unless something unforeseen happens so you always know when your favorites compete.
2. Everything is head-to-head competition unless there's a tie and then both go to the next round.
3. One vote per IP per poll.
4. All comments must stay civil. No attacking or insulting a fandom. Any comment deemed unrespectful will be flagged for removal. Respect makes for a happy contest.
Polls close around 2 pm CST. Enjoy! Don't forget to pick who you chose and why in the comments. For me:
ReplyDelete1. Paul Briggs - Briggs is one of the few antiheroes that I like. He's complicated but he cares about those in his house. Ever since he accidentally murdered an FBI agent, he's changed and I find that fascinating. I cannot wait to see how he deals with the murdered agent's wife in the future. Mostly though I see a man haunted by his demons in a way that I can empathize. Patrick Jane also has personal demons, but he comes off as too big of a douche for me to sympathize at all.
2. Draw - For me these are much the same character. To be honest, I disliked both characters for part of their run, so either winning is fine by me. Given that I think Jack will win and there's a dearth of kick butt females on TV, I guess I choose Nikita.
3. Buffy - This one is easy because I have never seen Parks and Recreation plus Buffy was my TV hero for a long time. She revolutionized how the teen girl was portrayed on TV and I had a lot of fun watching her do it.
4. Neither - I can't stand Sherlock and I don't even know who Erin Lindsey is.
Only Nikita for me.
ReplyDeleteArgh. Jack, but I was very close to voting for Nikita.
ReplyDeleteWell... PATRICK JANE all the way ♥
ReplyDeleteWent with
ReplyDelete1) Patrick Jane (Not seen Graceland yet)
2) Jack Bauer (Can never vote against Jack!)
3) Buffy (Not a fan of Parks)
4) Sherlock (Love Sherlock)
N/A
ReplyDeleteNikita
Buffy
Sherlock
My votes are Paul Briggs and Erin Lindsay. I haven't seen any of the four shows in Poll 2 and 3 but they are on my Watchlist.
ReplyDeleteJust Sherlock and Buffy for me today.
ReplyDeleteYou should definitely try Buffy. The first short season is rocky but it is totally worth watching for season 2 alone.
ReplyDeleteIt's a shame two such similar characters came up against each other in the first round.
ReplyDeleteI really like Graceland. The first seasons was pretty bumpy but it has some of the best plot twists around and they even make sense.
ReplyDeleteThis one's easy: Nikita, Sherlock and Buffy.
ReplyDeleteI don't know when I will get to Buffy. I have a hard time picking which ended shows to watch so I decided to pick them randomly and there are currently 7 other shows on my 1st Watchlist (Damages, Friday Night Lights, Friends, Lost, Pushing Daisies, The O.C. and Weeds). I also don't like bingewatching, so what I do is I pick 2 of them and watch their episodes alternatively. Once a season is done, I switch to another of the seven shows and once one of the show is finished I pick another show form my 2nd Watchlist (I make watching TV sound complicated...)
ReplyDeleteI've heard many good things about the show but it will probably take some time until I get to it.
I watched two of listed shows, but nothing for me.
ReplyDeletePatrick Jane
ReplyDeleteJack Bauer
Buffy Summers
I've never seen Sherlock but I love Sophia Bush so my vote goes to Erin Lindsay
Just 24-HR Jack Bauer for me today!
ReplyDeleteSounds like a fair system with a lot of variety. When you do get to Buffy season 2 let me know because we're doing the roundtable on it.
ReplyDeleteJane, Bauer Buffy, Lindsay
ReplyDeletePatrick Jane, Nikita, and obviously Buffy. Who wouldn't vote for Buffy?
ReplyDeleteFinally its starting! :) My votes:
ReplyDelete1: N/A
2: N/A
3: Buffy
4: Sherlock
I think it's the acting is why I mainly love Buffy & Sherlock. And Buffy is a female badass which is rare on TV, especially back then so she was is extra cool (Buffy & Xena are my favourite female badasses!). Benedict Cumberbatch plays Sherlock really well too. Of course the writing of the characters plays a huge part as well.
P.S. That Almost Human reference at the start made my day :)
I just wanted to say I loved the Almost Human reference.
ReplyDelete1: N/A
ReplyDelete2: Jack Bauer
3: Buffy
4: Sherlock
Thanks. I figure if we need to have rules, they might as well be entertaining.
ReplyDeleteI have high hopes that Buffy will go far. She is one of my favorite TV icons.
ReplyDeleteI am curious: do you have a favourite character on Sherlock
ReplyDelete(assuming you have not given up the series, seeing how you dislike the main
character)?
I have only seen the first three episodes, but I liked John Watson fairly well and Mrs. Hudson always made me laugh. She's probably my favorite. Is Sherlock your favorite character?
ReplyDeleteI have a feeling Erin Lindsay will get a little Brooke Davis love in this poll. Good for her.
ReplyDeleteGlad you liked it. Even more glad that people are getting it. I was afraid I'd leave people looking quizzical. Buffy is still one of the most influential characters for me. To be honest, there were other characters from the show that I liked better, but Buffy was special and not just because she was the chosen one. I agree the acting was good. I can't imagine anyone but SMG playing her. To this day I live in fear of a Buffy reboot.
ReplyDeleteIf you like Buffy and Xena, I strongly recommend you try La Femme Nikita or the reboot, Nikita. She is another strong, kick butt woman. I think you would really like her.
First of all, loved the rules at the beginning. All the references and stuff. Nicely said, Dahne :)
ReplyDeleteMy picks for today:
1. Patrick Jane. Sorry Briggs.
2. Nikita. Had to think for a second, cause Jack is also quite a character. But it is NIKITA, so...
3. Buffy. Again, Leslie's such a fun character. But even though I still haven't finished watching Buffy, after watching season 1 and half, plus some additional later episodes (most of season 3) and generally knowing the show's story, it's hard not to vote for our favorite vampire slayer.
4. Sherlock. Absolutely sure here. Even though I regret it's not Watson.
Two characters I love, too. Can't believe you rigged it this way* ;)
ReplyDelete*in case people on the internet cannot pick up on sarcasm, this was it.
Nope :-) I actually do not like him at all... I mean – the
ReplyDeleteactor is doing a great job playing him, obviously, but I just cannot stand
people who are as rude and unpleasant towards others as Sherlock is. That being
said, I do keep watching the series. Mostly because it is still a quality entertainment
and it is interesting enough to come back for three episodes at the time, I
guess. My favourite character on the show is Mycroft. He seems much more thought-provoking
than Sherlock and comes off as much more likeable person, especially as from
time to time you can see that for all his talk about how “caring is not an
advantage” he actually does care about his brother.
Thanks. I was hoping if they were catchy, people would read and follow them.
ReplyDeleteSo you are in the middle of season 2 of Buffy? We are doing a roundtable review of 2.02 next Sunday via Skype. I hope you can make it. It's a lot of fun and very casual.
Yeah, they're definitely catchy. Hopefully eveyone will notice them :)
ReplyDeleteAs for the review, that sounds like fun. I read them back when you were doing season 1. That's actually what got me to watch the series from the beginning. Only knew some random episodes before. I would have to re-watch the episode, since it's been a while, but sure, if the time will be okay, I'd love to help out. Maybe let me know via G+ or something when you'll have the details and I'll look for the episode :)
all the other polls are not close.........only Jack/Nikita is close and only separate by two votes
ReplyDeleteI've heard a lot of great things about Mycroft from my friend who is a huge fan of BBC Sherlock. I will probably eventually catch up with it but it's not a priority right now. I have the same issues with Sherlock as you do. In fact, he is on the list along with Dr. House and Patrick Jane of characters so obnoxious that I cannot watch them. I like their shows well enough but only in those instances when they are not there, which are few and far between. I guess for me since I work with people all day, I don't like coming home to rude people in my entertainment. I tend to be rooting for their downfall. I did think that the second and third episode of Sherlock had good mysteries though.
ReplyDeleteN/A, Nikita, Buffy and Sherlock. I love Jack but he has grated my nerves at times. Nikita didn't and she's the female Jack. Kickass. Buffy was my first "real" TV addiction. I'm old enough to remember what it felt like to watch Starsky and Hutch so finding this show in the 90's was fun. It was exciting and I became a part of a cult TV show fanbase for the first time in my life. I had the videos, eventual DVD's, character cards, costumes and every Buffy Magazine and calendar ever printed. The guys at Suncoast movies knew me well and by name. They saved Buffy merchandise for me. My favorite little gems were a B/A T-shirt that I wore til it was threadbare and Spike's car. I have a lot of fun memories of Buffy and friends.
ReplyDeleteI am a big fan of close polls but there will probably only be one close poll per day in round 1. That's because they are seeded by rank so the #1 nominated show goes agaisnt the least nominated show. For this section it is:
ReplyDelete#1 vs #64
32 vs 33
17 vs 48
16 vs 49
Polls should get much closer as the contest continues.
My conspiracy theories come with a little provocation, rather than coincidence.
ReplyDeleteNikita has actually been on my watchlist for years now but i've just never got around to it :P When it first came out I had intended to watch it but for some reason never got around to it.
ReplyDeleteLucky woman. Back before shipping took over absolutely everything on TV, I was not the staunch anti-shipper that I am today. I loved that claddagh scene and it is still one of my favorite romantic moments on TV.
ReplyDeleteThat is Alias for me. I want to watch it. Every summer I think i am going to watch it. Somehow it never gets watched.
ReplyDelete:) ahaha! I'm glad you wrote them, this should be on every fan poll on the internet, just to keep things light and clear- .. and YES!! that was a nice surprise! I hope he wins! \o/
ReplyDeleteSince the whole purpose of running these contests is to get great TV discussion going, I'm going to start. Topic - Looking at the lsit of nominated characters, there seems to be a lot of antiheroes listed: Patrick Jane, Jack Bauer, Sherlock Holmes, Raymond Reddington, Hannibal Lector, Lorne Malvo, Walter White, etc. Other notables like Sons of Anarchy and The Sopranos also seem to be favorites. What makes an antihero a great character? Why do you think they are so popular these days? What changed? Who are your favorites and why? What are your favorite shows, scenes, moments, etc. with antiheroes?
ReplyDeleteIf you have other topics you want to discuss, either start the conversation here, e-mail me at dahne1@spoilerTV.com, or tweet me @dahne1.
Dahne, this looks like it's going to be a fun poll, very entertaining and fun read of the rules, I voted for Nikita, and Erin from Chicago Pd, don't know if she'll go far but I like her character, she's a fleshed out character, I like kick butt female characters!!!
ReplyDeleteJane, Nikita, Buffy, and Sherlock. Today's choices were easy for me.
ReplyDeleteI think most antiheroes have to be written better as well. They either need to have some underlying sympathy the audience can grasp at while they are doing terrible things or being complete douches Or they have to be so interesting in their own right that the audience is willing to put up with them in order to figure out how they tick. Something has to appeal to or connect to the audience. For instance Jane is a douche but it's partly because his entire family was killed by a serial killer and he blames himself for it. Jack Bauer acts like a terrorist himself much of the time, but he's doing it for a cause the audience can get behind. Walter White at least started out on his journey for good reasons, to provide for his family after he was gone.
ReplyDeleteThe newest group of antiheroes, both cops and gangs, for me is from Gang Related. I don't like any of these characters but I am compelled to figure out what will happen to them. I admire their sense of loyalty and strong family bonds even as I hope they take each other out. The idea of a gang leader doing everything violent and evil as a way to get his entire family out of the life holds a backwards fascination.
I was just talking on another site about how BtVS can be compared to other supernatural shows. There are even some parallels to it on The Vampire Diaries.
ReplyDeleteAgreed. The thing I love about Walter White is (SPOILERS) his admittance in the finale that though he said he was doing it for his family, he actually ended up doing it because he liked it and was good at it. That made him far more of a character than he was previously imo.
ReplyDeleteYou're totally right about Jack. And I think he himself summed it up brilliantly in season 7 "For a combat soldier, the difference between success and failure is your
ability to adapt to your enemy. The people that I deal with, they don't
care about your rules. All they care about is a result. My job is to
stop them from completing their objective, at all costs. I simply
adapted."
Just Paul Briggs for me today.
ReplyDeleteIt was so dificult to vote for Sherlock against Lindsay, I love her too but there's no doubt about Cumberbatch's greatness.
ReplyDeleteJoss Whedon really made a contribution.
ReplyDeleteI prefer Johnny Lee Millers Sherlock. I don't know what it is about the BBC Sherlock that makes me not like him, he has just seems like a very unlikable character.
ReplyDelete"Comments are the Wellspring of Hiatus Life - Most of us anxiously await a favorite show's return and if you're like me, right about now is when I start feeling the wait the most."
ReplyDeletexxx
This is why I love summer shows. My shows this summer have been keeping me. I actually might miss my summer shows (okay, Dominion) more when it ends then majority of my fall shows. Too long until next summer.
Patrick Jane - The Mentalist
ReplyDeleteNikita Mears - Nikita
Leslie Knope - Parks and Recreation
Sherlock Holmes - Sherlock
I've never had as many Summer shows as I do this year, i'll miss Penny Dreadful, Teen Wolf & Dominion (all of which are in my top 5 shows list) and Continuum(which is in danger of cancellation:( ) the most, Teen Wolf was fine last season cos it was 24 episodes but not this season :(
ReplyDeleteI have really high hopes for The Strain too because I absolutely love horror, there's just very very very few good 'horror' shows or movies that scare me. The only fall shows I really miss are OUAT & The 100. The wait for OUAT isnt that long with their split season approach and The 100 is returning earlier with a longer season so thats good :)
Three words: Masters of Sex.
ReplyDeleteTotally feel your pain. It hasn't even started and I'm already missing it.
I guess the choice of Jack vs Nikita was tough.........not enough 24 fans here
ReplyDeleteI actually miss fall shows a lot more than summer ones , i dont really watch many summer shows to be honest at the moment i only watch The Fosters , Falling Skies and Under The Dome. I miss loads of fall shows and cant stand it when the season ends: Person Of Interest , OUAT , TBBT , The Middle , Elementary , The Walking Dead , Game Of Thrones. I find it also very hard to actually get into summer shows as much as fall shows , i usually find myself just watching one show i have never seen before through summer (Im watching Greys anatomy at the moment).
ReplyDeleteHave you seen American Horror Story? As im considering watching it and if you have seen it as you love horror type shows i would love to get your opinion on it.
ReplyDeleteHannibal Lector is my favorite antihero. I don't know why , but although he does horrible things i don't really want him to be caught. I like the fact how he is so cunning and he can easily manipulate people into doing things (Abigal Hobbs) without them really knowing what their actually doing its just brilliant. I think what makes a good antihero is down to two things a well written script for the character and the person playing the antihero (so the acting).
ReplyDeleteYh I watch AHS, I like it, it took me a while to get into it properly and it has it's poor moments. I almost stopped watching during season 3. The good thing about it though is that every season is like an entirely new show just with the same actors, so if you don't like a season you can just skip it :) The acting is always supurb it's just the writing is the problem sometimes, it can be slow moving at times as well but I don't mind that.
ReplyDeleteThats awesome that they change it around each season i suppose it keeps things interesting and each season can have a different idea. I probably will check it out eventually just at the moment i watching greys anatomy for the first time and their is a lot of episodes to get through to catch up.Thanks for your thoughts on the show!
ReplyDeleteYh it's a cool way of doing the show, and no problem :)
ReplyDeleteJane and Lindsay! Don't watch the others.
ReplyDelete1. Paul Briggs - Am I the only one kind of shipping him with Juan's wife?
ReplyDelete2. Nikita -
3. Don't overly care for either.
4. Erin Lindsay - Sophia Bush, need I say more?
I usually miss fall shows more too, cause I've usually been summer light too. But I really, really, love Dominion. It's been keeping my mind off my beloved fall shows.
ReplyDelete1) Patrick Jane - mostly because, while I don't watch constantly I am more familiar with that character than Paul Briggs. (Oh wait, is he the hot guy in charge of the house? (I did watch that pilot.))
ReplyDelete2) Nikita Mears
3) Buffy - Buffy and Nikita appeal because they are strong fighters who never stay down too long.
4) Sherlock - Really interesting, complex character.
Thanks, as usual, for putting this together. It's a major feat.
ReplyDeleteI keep trying to figure out if this Sherlock is in anyway related to the characterizations in the books? My earliest introduction is in the American movies of the um...40s(?) Basil Rathbone.
ReplyDeleteI voted for him not necessarily because he's a likable guy but because, as a character he's anything but one dimensional. (part of my fun with the characters on Sherlock is in the fact that Watson has Sherlock's number (especially by the last set of episodes) and frequently wins.)
Knope and Holmes
ReplyDeleteSherlock was a pretty big douche in the books too if I recall, although it's been awhile. When your own creator wants to kill you off, that says something. :-P For me, I have to be able to root for a character if I am going to vote for him/her. It makes my decisions easier for this contest because there are actually a lot of characters I don't like here. Glad to hear Watson's stepping up his game now.
ReplyDeleteNikita and Buffy, don't watch the other shows. Both are absolutely kick ass and I don't watch any of the other shows they were up against anyway :P. Really excited for this competition but I really hope Elijah Mikaelson wins cause he's my fav. (Also because Derek Hale didn't make it)
ReplyDeleteI prefer the Elementary version as well, although Sherlock is still my least favorite character in it. I think he's easier to handle than the Sherlock version though because of his drug addiction and because the other characters around him don't put up with his rudeness as much. He is frequently called out for being a douche and he is frequently remorseful for his most jerk moves. I guess I feel like the Elementary version is at least trying in small way while the Sherlock version is fully happy in becoming an even bigger douche.
ReplyDeleteThanks for participating. I've missed out Supernatual contests.
ReplyDeleteEasy voting day for me: Jane, Jack, Buffy and Sherlock.
ReplyDeleteJane, Jack and Buffy are from shows I only casually watch/watched so I voted for them because I've seen their shows and not their opponents'
Sherlock isn't my favorite character from the show (Moriarty is) but I love the show and half the time he says the kinds of things I'm thinking so that earns my vote.
My favorite Sherlock line: "I'm a high functioning sociopath, do your research!"
Jack Bauer <3
ReplyDeleteAnd as much as I love Sophia Bush as Erin Lindsey, Sherlock Holmes is one of the most intriguing, complex and brilliant character.
Nikita and Buffy. It's too bad I had to vote against Leslie Knope though, I don't watch P&R but I've heard she's a great character.
ReplyDeleteBuffy. Enough said.
ReplyDeleteWith Dr House, I think what he had going for him was the
ReplyDeletesense of humour. The problem (for me) was that his sense of humour was almost
inseparable from his rudeness towards others and ultimately led me to give up
watching. I find Patrick Jane the easiest to tolerate out of the three in this respect,
though I am not entirely sure why. I guess it is because the
moments when he is truly inconsiderate of others are balanced by those when
he shows that he actually cares about people other than himself, and also that the
suffering of others affects him more than he normally lets on. So... I like
Jane, even though I still find it a bit difficult to accept that someone who
experienced the tragedy that he did can be this insensitive to people who are
essentially in his shoes.
I tend to not watch shows on premium cable channels because of the excessive nudity, language, and violence. I had heard that OZ was a big offender in this regard so I haven't seen it. I am however finding the same thing in Gang Related. Terrible people and yet something happens and I find myself wanting some of them to get out of the mess they made for themselves. It's odd because I usually have no patience for that.
ReplyDeleteI agree about House. With Jane, I guess I rarely saw that side of him and already couldn't stand him when I did. I watched all of season 1 in hopes that he would get better and to give the show a fair chance, but I just cannot accept this character's arrogance.
ReplyDeleteSorry. I hate when a showrunner screws up my favorite shows. So again it looks like a character's motivations can mitigate some of the worst parts of a charater if it's written right.
ReplyDeleteThere really aren't mitigating circumstances for Hannibal like the others that have been mentioned, which makes him fascinating to study. He's not killing only serial killers like Dexter or selling drugs as life insurance like Walter. So he is compelling because of his brain, like being mesmerized by snake's movements.
ReplyDeleteThanks. I appreciate you taking time to red the rules too. I am a big fan of kick butt females as well. In fact, they are often my favorite characters. I wish there were more of them on TV.
ReplyDeleteGlad someone else is giving him a nod. He's a far more complex character than I ever thought he would be.
ReplyDeleteI will miss summer shows too, especially since they do seem to have the shortest seasons with the longest hiatus, a bad combo for me. Still I find mysef missing my fall shows, especially now when they are starting to film again. Tweets and little teasers are making me really anxious to get the fall season started again.
ReplyDeleteI have far more TV to watch this summer than I ever have before so I get where you're coming from. As for Teen Wolf, it is always possible that season 5 will start in January and therefore make it feel like a 24 episode season. Fingers crossed.
ReplyDeleteI am surprised by the vote too, especially given that 24 is airing right now. I guess the contest got some promotion at a Nikita site and Nikita fans have always been loyal. I'm just sad they both cannot go through to the next round.
ReplyDeleteI don't ship anyone but I do really like Briggs finding repentance by helping her. I think it will be a good character arc for him.
ReplyDeleteI doubt it since the entire reason season 4 was twelve episodes is too give the cast & crew time off to do other things, at least there's a very high chance season 5 will be 24 eps :)
ReplyDeleteYes, Briggs is the hot guy in Graceland, although there's more than one. :-P Buffy and Nikita are both strong characters with a lot of appeal for me in that they can take care of themselves but they are at their best when working as a team.
ReplyDeleteI'm hoping that this season of Teen Wolf will expand Derek's character and really give him a meaty role. I really think there is a lot to explore with him that they have barely even started to touch.
ReplyDeleteHa! Great line. I will say that for the most part the writing on Sherlock is clever.
ReplyDeleteLidnsay didn't have much of a chance given this draw. Perhaps next year, she'll be in a more favorable position.
ReplyDeleteI've never seen Parks and Rec either but I have a friend who is gaga over that show and raves about her every week in the TV season.
ReplyDeleteWas this a rewatch or the first time you've seen Sherlock at all?
ReplyDeleteJeff did say he was exhausted. I'm hoping he gets inspiration very quickly. It can't be too long a turnaround though since most of the cast is at least in their mid 20's and playing a teen for much longer is going to be a huge stretch.
ReplyDeleteBeacon Hills University here we come!
ReplyDeleteI totally agree. After all the high school at Sunnydale went down and suddenly a college sprung up. Could definitely happen at Beacon Hills too.
ReplyDeleteFor me the Red John
ReplyDeletearc was interesting enough to push through Jane's worst years (in terms of his
behaviour) and I think the creators of the show really toned his arrogance down
over the past couple of seasons. It was also good to see that especially this
year he finally seemed to realise that he often assumed too much when it came
to his closest friends, and he was trying to change that. What I absolutely
loved was that at one point Jane decided to use his "abilities" to
figure out what his friends at work wanted to have the most when they were
younger, and then get it for them. He managed to do it quietly, without turning
it into a spectacle, just to do something nice for them. I thought it was such
a lovely b-plot. Nevertheless, I completely understand why you would stop
watching after the way he behaved at first; I was very close to tuning out during
the first season myself. I had a similar problem when I was trying to get into watching
Castle and he seemed just so arrogant to me that I did not even make it to the
end of the pilot. But I hear the show is good. Do you watch Castle?
I don't expect to have too much to say during the competition itself, but I had to say your rules were worth the price of admission just for laying it out there like that. Classic job there. :)
ReplyDeleteI think many readers would appreciate a heads-up. I haven't seen several of these polls until they've already closed. Judging by the date of the post and the closing time of the poll, there isn't a great deal of time.
ReplyDeletefirst time
ReplyDeleteI feel like the the writers know they have an intelligent audience so they don't dumb down the dialogue hoping that everyone "gets it" (Carver, I'm looking at you). This version of Sherlock is by far my favorite - I just hope that BC and MF will still make time in their busy schedules to film a few more seasons - four just isn't enough!
ReplyDeleteYeah!
ReplyDeleteThanks! Your suggestions should prove helpful.
ReplyDeleteI know both actors are in high demand but given that Sherlock has so few episodes, I'm sure they can work around both actor's schedules.
ReplyDeleteThat was some felicitous timing there. You watched the episode right before the poll. Obviously you were meant to vote for Sherlock.
ReplyDeleteThat sounds like a great Jane episode and I think they would have benefitted from something like that in the first season. I kept trying to see why I should care about him and failing. I am glad to hear that they "softened" him up for lack of a better word.
ReplyDeleteI have seen the first few seasons of Castle. Not sure which one I stopped on but it's been a couple of years. I marathoned Castle and generally liked the first 2 seasons, but I too never saw the appeal of Castle. I guess I saw him as more goofy than arrogant though, although he is both. I've heard that Castle and The Mentalist are essentially the same show but The Mentalist is more drama focused while Castle is more humor focused. That makes sense to me if too simplistic.
Given how busy both are, I was pleasantly surprised to hear that we would be getting a Christmas special in 2015 and a 3 episode season to follow in 2016 - hope that trend continues for many, many seasons!
ReplyDeleteA Christmas special is a great way to bridge the gap. I hope some other shows with long hiatuses go that route.
ReplyDeleteDoctor Who and Downton Abby do it too - seems to be a British thing. Hopefully it'll catch on with American/Canadian shows....oh how I would love a Hannibal Christmas special a few months before the new season premiered!
ReplyDeleteI'm not sure if Hannibal and Christmas go together. Christmas dinner might be a little hard to take. :-P
ReplyDeleteI agree that would be cool! I'd really love a spinoff in any form tbh, I just want to see the world expanded more, there's so much there to work with.
ReplyDeleteyeah perfect timing. and loving sherlocks so much. i would be able to get through more episodes if they weren't so long though. don't have time to binge watch a show like that. have to take them one night at a time
ReplyDeleteI actually consider Sherlock to be a mini series instead of a TV show so I feel your pain.
ReplyDeleteI am dying for a Teen Wolf spin-off as long as some of the main characters go with it. I've been advocating a Derek and Lydia spin-off since 3A when it felt like their characters went AWOL a lot.
ReplyDeleteLiterally LOL!!!
ReplyDelete
