Character Cup - Nominations Open - Nominations Now Closed
Jul 8, 2014
2014 Character CupUpdated 7/10 - Nominations are now closed, but you can still participate. Polls are up for the final nominations and ranking. Contest starts Sunday evening.
Updated 7/6 - Remember you can only nominate once. If you fill out the form more than once, all your nominations will be disqualified. We've already had a couple people who negated their nominations and that just sucks out loud.
Character Cup nominations start today! If you haven't participated in the Cup before on SpoilerTV, it's basically a fun contest to pass the hiatus. People nominate their favorite characters (male and female, current and/or ended) and the top 64 characters go head-to-head to choose a favorite. Let me stress that this contest has nothing to do with the "best" character, which is subjective, or the best acted character, also subjective, or most influential character, you guessed it - still subjective. It is simply a way to show your favorite characters some love. So think back on all those great TV shows you've watched in the past or are watching now. Who are your favorites?
You can nominate up to 2 males and 2 females from any show. If you want to have all your nominations from the same show, that's fine. However in a new twist for the contest, only one character can be represented per TV show. So if one TV show has the three top nominated characters, only the one with the most votes gets in. This gives more fandoms a chance to participate and will hopefully make the contest a lot more interesting. It also means that you are better off nominating a different show's characters each time so you're not cancelling out your own nomination.
Basic nomination rules:
1. Only 1 Submission per person. If you submit multiple times ALL your submissions will be removed.
2. You can nominate up to 2 males and 2 females but you have to do it at the same time. You can choose to nominate fewer.
3. Nominations end Thursday at noon CST. Contest starts next Sunday.
4. Only nominations with both character AND TV show will be included.
5. Questions? Ask in the comments below.
Welcome back Character Cup. This contest hasn't been run since 2011 and I'm so excited to have it back. Please, please, please read the nomination rules so yours is not disqualified and if you have any questions, ask away.
ReplyDeletePeter Hale, Conrad Grayson, Elena Michaels & Freya Beauchamps
ReplyDeleteDerek Hale (Teen Wolf), Elijah Mikaelson (Originals), Buffy Summers, and Veronica Mars
ReplyDeleteNikita!! Love her so much but I don't think she had a chance to win so did not nominate. Stiles :( I like him too but Derek > Stiles for me. Of course Sterek bromance is one of the best (non romantic!)
ReplyDeleteThat's in my Top 10 character descriptions of all time. Perfect!
ReplyDeleteMale Characters: Ben Linus (LOST) and Walter Bishop (Fringe)
ReplyDeleteIf I could pick a third it would be George O'Malley (Greys Anatomy)
Female Characters: Christina Yang (Greys Anatomy) and Regina Mills (QUAT)
Hard to choose, but went with Harold Finch (Person of Interest), Felix Dawkins (Orphan Black), Buffy and Kiera Cameron (Continuum).
ReplyDeleteHonorable mentions: Jack Bauer (24), John Reese (Person of Interest), Sidney Bristow (Alias), Nikita and Michael (La Femme Nikita), Veronica Mars, Wilfred, Tyrion Lannister (GOT), most characters from Fringe, Alison and Helena (Orphan black), Dean Winchester and many more...
Maybe a few years ago, but I'd say others have surpassed Supernatural here in popularity. However it really doesn't matter because the whole thing is just about having some fun and showing our favorite characters some love. There's nothing serious about this contest.
ReplyDeleteI started watching The 100 but didn't really get into the Pilot much and I had taped all the episodes too. I know the premise of the show but what makes it a good show in your opinion?
ReplyDeleteWhat? No Veronica Mars. I'm shocked. You're the one who got me into that series. :-)
ReplyDeleteHarold Finch is a good one , he is currently my favorite male character that's on air at the moment.
ReplyDeleteBarney Stinson, HIMYM. (Love him!)
ReplyDeleteTyrion Lannister, GoT. (Badass!)
Phoebe, Friends. (My favorite female character ever)
Olivia Dunham, Fringe. (Such a strong woman, so pretty, love her, miss her!)
I like darker, grimm shows and The 100 is like that, the storyline is far from boring and it's totally unpredictable. Plus the EP said he wont be focusing on romance and that he hates love triangles which for me is a huge point in the shows favour! The acting is really good too, especially from the older actors.
ReplyDeleteStargate, Buffy, and X-Files were my first TV obsessions (not in that order) so whenever I think back fondly on TV they come to mind first. Generally shows that are airing have a much better chance in these contests so my female votes have no chance of getting in. I just love them too much to leave them out.
ReplyDeleteI expect that she's covered by other voters. I like to give my initial nominations to 1-2 characters that I don't expect to get as many nominations.
ReplyDeleteI never watched X-Files and I think I only saw bits of Buffy. But Stargate was the only show I watched until it ended in 2011 :P After that i started watching old shows and starting new ones. I know Buffy at least still has a huge active fanbase so you never know!
ReplyDeleteMan, this is so hard. I went with:
ReplyDeleteJack Bauer - 24
Walter White - Breaking Bad
Chloe O'Brian - 24
Phoebe Buffay - Friends
Honourable mentions:
Hank Schrader/Gus Fring/Mike Ehrmantraut/Saul Goodman - Breaking Bad
Ross Geller/Chandler Bing/Joey Tribbiani - Friends
Harold Finch/John Reese - Person of Interest
Daniel Faraday/James 'Sawyer' Ford/Jack Shepard/Ben Linus/Hugo 'Hurley' Reyes/Charlie Pace - Lost
Michael/Sean/Birkhoff - Nikita
Tony Almeida (season 7 of 24 the only reason I picked Jack over Tony - damn you 24 writers for ruining his character)/Bill Buchanan/David Palmer/Charles Logan/Aaron Pierce/Stephen Saunders/Edgar Stiles - 24 (there's more, I'm sure, but they just aren't coming to mind right now)
10th Doctor - Doctor Who
Jack Harkness (also of Doctor Who)/Owen Harper/Ianto Jones - Torchwood
Oliver Queen/Tommy Merlyn/Slade Wilson/John Diggle - Arrow
Miles Matheson/Sebastian Monroe - Revolution
Steve McGarrett/Danny Williams/Kamekona - Hawaii Five-0
Nick Stokes - CSI
Mac Taylor/Don Flack - CSI: New York
Horatio Caine/Eric Delko - CSI: Miami
Leroy Jethro Gibbs/Tony Dinozzo/Tim McGee/Donald Mallard - NCIS
G. Callen/Sam Hanna/Marty Deeks/Eric Beale - NCIS: Los Angeles
Raymond 'Red' Reddington - The Blacklist
Daryl Dixon - The Walking Dead
Monica Geller-Bing/Rachel Green - Friends
Joss Carter/Root/Sameen Shaw - Person of Interest
Kate Austen - Lost
Nikita - Nikita
Nina Myers/Sherry Palmer/Michelle Dessler/Martha Logan - 24
Rose Tyler - Doctor Who
Gwen Cooper - Torchwood
Felicity Smoake/Moira Queen - Arrow
Calleigh Duquesne - CSI: Miami
Ziva David - NCIS
Kensi Blye/Nell Jones/Hetty Lange - NCIS: Los Angeles
As I said, this was very hard.
I think a character in a show still airing will definitely win. That's the way these things tend to go, but it's great to talk about them again in the nomination stage. Sometimes I wish we had retro articles here on SpoilerTV just to bring back all the great shows that are no longer with us. As for Teen Wolf, I like Derek and I often think he gets shafted by the writers. However after 3B, there's no doubt that Stiles is my favorite character. He's quickly followed by Team Parent though. :-)
ReplyDeleteBuffy, Scully, and characters from LOST tend to be the ones that go against the norm. At least one of them usually gets to the final 8.
ReplyDeleteHa! I was going to write Jack Bauer, but replaced him for Finch in the end, Michael Emerson is doing a wonderful job, and I think Harold deserves to be on the list.
ReplyDeleteGreat list. There have been so many awesome characters that I agree, this is difficult. The 10th Doctor was on my original list as well.
ReplyDeleteDamn that was hard....ultimately went with:
ReplyDeleteCrane - Sleepy Hollow
Bellamy - The 100
Felicity - Arrow
May - Agents of Shield
Big thanks to Dahne for putting this together - can't wait!
Those four immediately came to mind, and when I decided to start making an honourable mentions list, I went "am I REALLY not going to include this character?!" There's always next year.
ReplyDeleteSome of these I picked because many wouldn't :)
ReplyDeleteChuck Bartowski, CHUCK
Dexter Morgan, DEXTER
Sarah Walker, CHUCK
Myka Bering, Warehouse 13
I do the same thing. It's fun to discuss them again even if only in the nomination stage. Claudia from WH13 made my original list. I would bet that you won't be the only one to nominate characters from Chuck though.
ReplyDeleteMy guess is that Bellamy will have a lot of votes. Not sure if he will make it in or not but he is indeed a popular character. I'm looking forward to marathoning Penny Dreadful because I thought Vanessa was awesome in the pilot.
ReplyDeleteyes he does , lets hope he gets through nominations!
ReplyDeleteFor a producer who hates love triangles, he sure has them in the show. I wonder if that means that he has been pressured to add them. I hope not because the only thing that I can't stand about The 100 is the romance issues.
ReplyDeleteTo put it simply, the characters. The writers are not afraid to put the characters in extreme situations that are still realistic to their situation. These are teens but they have to make decisions many adults couldn't face in order to survive. There is a bit of the love triangle, CW-ish in the episodes, but for the most part it is an intense, rich world and well worth your time to watch.
ReplyDeleteI did the same thing. I'm hoping that the Veronica Mars movie has kept her in people's minds for this.
ReplyDeleteI went with Emily Thorne, Vanessa Ives, Ragnar Lothbrok and John Snow
ReplyDeleteSo glad Walter is getting some love here. He was such a great character.
ReplyDeleteFinch also made my short list. It's such a great character and I love how mysterious he was at first.
ReplyDeleteI didn't really watch HIMYM except sporatic reruns but I still think that clip of Nothing Suits Me Like a Suit is one of the best things ever created. Barney cracks me up every time I see him.
ReplyDeleteI went with
ReplyDeleteDean Winchester - Supernatural
Seth Gecko - From Dusk Till Dawn
Buffy - Buffy
Lydia - Teen Wolf
Thanks for participating. I used to do a big Supernatural poll every summer but since I stopped watching SPN, I was missing the contests. I need my fix.
ReplyDeleteLove that you added May in your nominations. She's another of those great kick butt females on TV and always one of the biggest highlights of SHIELD.
I know how you feel. If I didn't have all of my TV DVD's packed away to put the new entertainment center in, I think my honorable mentions would have been too long to type.
ReplyDeleteI decided to go with my two favorite shows(for now haha) and my favorite female and male from those shows.
ReplyDeleteSo i picked Tyrion and Cersei from Game of Thrones and Oliver and Sara from Arrow.
I expect that Daenerys will get lots of nominations. I don't even watch GoT and even I know who she is. Bring on the dragons!
ReplyDeleteI'd be surprised if there wasn't pressure from someone at The CW to add more romance given how against it the EP is but i'm glad it's not influencing every storyline and it's kind of in the back seat for now. I agree that the romance is the only issue I have with The 100 as well. The EP also said he wont let 'shipping' influence how the show plays out at all so im glad for that too, of course that's not stopping The CW from making Bellamy & Clarke the center of every poster!
ReplyDeleteSad yet true. I really respect a show runner that tells his/her own story.
ReplyDeleteIt's super difficult to choose 2 and 2 characters ! If only I could nominate more! I would probably nominate every main character from CHUCK :D I'm sure others nominated Chuck, Dexter and Sarah, but Myka was the wildcard of my bunch. Now I would like to change Maybe 1 or 2 of my picks to more undervalued characters :/
ReplyDeleteMale:
ReplyDeleteSherlock Holmes - Sherlock
Stiles Stilinski - Teen Wolf
Honorable Mention:
Ichabod Crane - Sleepy Hollow
Tyrion Lannister - Game of Thrones
Ramsay Bolton - Game of Thrones
Hannibal Lecter - Hannibal
Will Graham - Hannibal
Female:
Spencer Hastings - Pretty Little Liars
Malia - Teen Wolf
Honorable Mention:
Margaery Tyrell - Game of Thrones
Moriarty - Elementary
Kenzi - Lost Girl
Cosima - Orphan Black
Sloan Sabbith - The Newsroom
Patrick Jane and Teresa Lisbon from The Mentalist ( oh what a surprise here) ;)
ReplyDeleteI kept on forgetting shows. I almost forgot 24 in my honourable mentions. Probably due to the fact that it's almost midnight and I'm quite tired.
ReplyDeleteOne of the things I love best about these contests is I inevitably forget someone so when I read other people's picks it brings back great TV memories. Here's hoping that others nominate the other characters you wanted to nominate.
ReplyDeleteI recognize all these characters except John Snow. What is he from? Love the Vikings love by the way.
ReplyDeleteGlad the females from Teen Wolf are getting some love too. I really hope that Lydia gets to shine this season because she's a great character. I liked her from teh minute they broke the stereotype and made her not only the most popular girl in the school but also a certified genius.
ReplyDeleteHa! My favorite show flip flops too. Right now it is Teen Wolf and Sleepy Hollow.
ReplyDeleteGreat list. I adore Moriarty. I hope she comes back next season because she always makes Elementary better. Malia is also a favorite right now for me.
ReplyDeleteJohn Snow is from Game of Thrones :)
ReplyDeleteThanks. I guess I only recognize the characters with weird names or Lannister somewhere in them from GoT.
ReplyDeleteIt was really hard to choose but i went with:
ReplyDeleteMale: Omar Little from The Wire and Ben Linus from Lost
Female: Olivia Dunham from Fringe and Sydney Bristow from Alias
We all love what we love. It will be interesting in the most popular shows here to see which character is going to represent the series, male or female. That's actually what makes me the most curious about this contest.
ReplyDeleteyes he was!
ReplyDeleteTwo kick butt females - awesome. I still mean to watch The Wire someday with all the raves it gets.
ReplyDeleteI also chose Ben Linus ,he was a great character.
ReplyDeleteLove Stiles and Dean, I'm confident they'll make it.
ReplyDeleteI think votings for characters might end up differently as votes for a show or episode. I often like charcters but not the show so much. We will see.
ReplyDeleteI am a bit sad only one character from each show will make it...I would have loved to see a male and a female vote and a final against the favorite male and female character.
LOL - I can't imagine the work that goes into this so I'm glad you needed the fix!
ReplyDeleteI had so many that I wanted to nominate so I decided to narrow it down to characters on shows that are still airing - my original list was lengthy but also included pretty much every main cast member from Stargate so deciding on May was a calculated choice - Ming Na can represent my favorite franchise (even if Universe is my least favorite incarnation of it) and one of my currently airing favorites all in one!
For me:
ReplyDeleteDean Winchester, Supernatural
Gregory House, Dr House
Fiona Glenanne , Burn Notice
Dana Scully ,X-Files
I am actually not confident that either will. Dean could easily be kicked out of the contest by Cas and Teen Wolf is likely to split its votes among most of the male cast. Plus while it is popular at SpoilerTV, it is in no way one of the biggest fandoms. I actually doubt any of my nominations make it into the actual contest.
ReplyDeleteJack Bauer - 24: Best memories include "Chase's hand", "Chloe/Jack partnerships", "Heller confrontation (end of season 6)", "Last ep of season 7", "Renee moments" and everything from 24: LAD :)
ReplyDeleteTopher Brink - Dollhouse: Best moments include "Geeking out over Bennett", "Lazer tag with Sierra", "playing around with DeWitt", and many more!
Alexandra Udinov - Nikita: Best moments include a lot of badass action, "being Birkhoff for Nikita for the day", the good old days with Alex inside Division, and the confident Alex from season 4!
Olivia Dunham - Fringe: Best moments include everything in Ability, her many cute moments taking care of Walter, everything from Season 3 (Peter drama/escape from Over There), "Shooting someone with an already used bullet" and the Peter/Olivia scenes!
Love these characters so much. hopefully some of you see this and it sways your votes ;)
Males:
ReplyDeleteIchabod Crane: Sleepy Hollow
Stiles Stilinski: Teen Wolf
Honorable Mentions: Bellamy Blake from The 100,
The Eleventh from Doctor Who, Agent Fitz from Agents of SHIELD, Jefferson/ The Mad Hatter from Once Upon a Time, Chuck Bartowski from Chuck, John from The Tomorrow People, Oliver Queen from Arrow, Dean Winchester from Supernatural and Crowley from Supernatural.
Females:
Lydia Martin: Teen Wolf
Allison Hendrix: Orphan Black
Honorable Mentions: The Entire Clone from Orphan Black,
Alison Argent from Teen Wolf, Nikita from Nikita, Agent May from Agents of SHIELD, Regina/ The Evil Queen from Once Upon a Time, Abbie Mills from Sleepy Hollow, Sara from Arrow, Amy Pond from Doctor Who and Christina Yang from Grey's Anatomy,
I'm sure there's more, that I'll remember :)
Oooh, smart thinking. I like the idea of a character representing more than one franchise. I wish I had thought of that.
ReplyDeleteMales:
ReplyDeleteWalter Bishop - Fringe
Hugo - LOST
Females:
Olivia Dunham - Fringe
Sydney Bristow - Alias
Honorable Mention:
Gene: Fringe
There are far so many more i would love to add...maybe next year?
I agree. Many times I love a show but I am not thrilled by the main character. In fact, there are few shows in which the main character is my favorite, since I am a sucker for the snarky sidekick.
ReplyDeleteI was tempted to allow one male and one female per show but the very last thing I wanted was to get to the end and only have a handful of shows left. That's only exciting for the people in those fandoms and I'd rather involve more people. Too be honest, if I had gone that route, I probably would have had them face off in the first round so it's not much difference. I would never have made it male vs. male and female vs. female throughout the contest though. I believe each character needs to stand on his or her own. My general plan for all contests I run is to use the NCAA 64-bracket tournament rankings. Whatever gets the most nominations gets the first place slot, whatever gets the second most as long as it's not from the same show gets the second place, and so on until it gets to 64. That way I can be just as upset as everyone else when my favorites are matched against each other in the first round. Sharing the love.
Oh man, I forgot about Alex completely.
ReplyDeleteI have run contests like Best Inanimate Object before. I have no objection to running a best TV animal one. Gene would probably go against Bear from PoI in the final round.
ReplyDeleteI certainly hope this Character Cup goes well so we can run it again next year. I have a whole list of people I want to nominate.
I would love it if Crowley made it into the contest. He's one of my favorite villains from any show ever. Great picks!
ReplyDeleteI love adding the best memories for the character. What a great idea! Just the memory of Olivia and Walter scenes makes me smile. Hopefully as we go through the contest other people will add their favorite moments with their picks too.
ReplyDeleteMe too, thanks :)
ReplyDeleteI really considered picking Stiles rather then Tyrion or Oliver but I just could not justify it to myself.
ReplyDeleteI kept changing names wanting to nominate Ben Linus, Jack Bauer,Peter Bishop,no wait this one,no wait that one,lol..! I hope you do run this next year!
ReplyDeleteOh. I forgot to add Bear!
Yeah, another vote for Fiona. She's my favorite kick butt character of all time and she never gets the love she deserves. I miss her.
ReplyDeleteI can see Walter doing well in this competition a few people now have nominated him (including myself). He was such a joy to watch , damn i miss Fringe.
ReplyDeleteLove Fiona. Strong, but sensitive. My favorite type. Hope she'll do great and get into contest.
ReplyDeleteI think it would be awesome if Bear took the character cup
ReplyDeleteI hope he does and i cannot express how much i miss Fringe. John Nobel was brilliant as Walter Bishop,i fell in love with him in that very first scene of him turning around to look who was standing there. When LOST ended i never thought there would be another series that would ever fill that void and i mourned till Fringe.
ReplyDeleteI'm still mourning Fringe and i have yet to find another show that will shine as bright. The closest i've come is Sleepy Hollow.
Yeah,I miss Fringe too!
LoL,agreed!
ReplyDeleteMing Na is such a talented actress - she can pull off brainy and/or badass so easily - I remember back when ER ruled the airwaves - she played a character I loved to hate so I guess in nominating her current character, I am also giving "honorable mentions" to all her past characters in all the shows I miss!
ReplyDeleteBest Inanimate Object would be an awesome contest!!! I can think of a dozen I'd nominate off the top of my head! Possible follow up to Best Character???
ReplyDeleteFox Mulder - The X Files
ReplyDeleteWalter White - Breaking Bad
Dana Scully - The X Files
Laura Roslin - Battlestar Galactica
She was on As the World Turns when I was in high school. I can't believe she's in her 50's. The woman looks amazing.
ReplyDeleteMales: Don Draper (Mad Men) and Ichabod Crane (Sleepy Hollow)
ReplyDeleteHonorable mentions: Tyrion Lannister (Game of Thrones), Sherlock Holmes (Elementary) and Dr. Hannibal Lecter (Hannibal)
Females: Leslie Knope (Parks and Recreation) and Tiffany Doggett (Orange is the New Black)
Honorable mentions: Victoria Grayson (Revenge), Elizabeth Jennings (The Americans), Jackie (Trophy Wife), Catherine de Medici (Reign) and Marie Laveau (AHS: Coven)
It would be the best contest ever. I knew I should have nominated Metallicar.
ReplyDeleteHa! Me too. I had my list on an index card and I kept scratching ones out and then addind them back in pen. (Not my finest move) Finally I just had to pick one.
ReplyDeleteWow - didn't know she has daytime soap roots! I was watching a YouTube clip of a panel from one of the Cons and couldn't believe how awesome she looks. I wish I would age that well!
ReplyDeleteOooohhhhh! That would be fantastic! I may be dating myself a bit here but Night Rider would be on my nomination list!!!!!
ReplyDeleteYou and me both. When I was a kid, my babysitter watched As the World Turns and Guiding Light so when I was in high school I kept up on them. She didn't look much younger then than she does now.
ReplyDeleteWill Scarlet was the best thing about Wonderland. I kind of hope there is another spin-off that follows him as the main character.
ReplyDeleteThat's on my lsit too. Hey I'll take it back even farther and go with the General Lee from Dukes of Hazard.
ReplyDeleteOMG - totally forgot about the General Lee!!! Very fond memories from my childhood watching DoH with my dad!
ReplyDeleteThat settles it - you gotta do the Vehicle contest!!!!!!!
and the only character that I doubt even Carver could ruin (and I'm pretty sure J2 would mutiny if she was totaled beyond repair).
ReplyDeleteI think at least stiles will, even if there are great characters in Teen Wolf he stands a better chance, I could be wrong but I hope I'm not.
ReplyDeleteOberyn Martell - Game of Thrones
ReplyDeleteHershel Greene - The Walking Dead
Brienne of Tarth - Game of Thrones
Carol Peletier - The Walking Dead
So with you on Moriarty, actually last season when she was in Elementary for a few episodes in a row it kinda spoiled me, it took me a few episodes to enjoy the show without her.
ReplyDeleteJame and Teresa (simon baker n Robin tunney ) from THE MENTALIST
ReplyDeleteWoah this was hard. As expected, I couldn't think of a second female character that I likes enough to actually nominate. Would have put Olivia Dunham but didn't want to nominate 2 from the same show.
ReplyDeleteMale: Walter bishop; fringe
John; the tomorrow people
Female; arya stark; game of thrones
Honerable mentions: most other males from game of thrones (tyrion, jamie, john, tywin, oberyn, Sam), ichabod crane; sleepy hollow, fitz and ward; shield, Jefferson and hook; once upon a time, Peter bishop; fringe, tommy merlyn; arrow, Zuko and sokka; avatar (could we do animated shows?), Bellamy; the 100, sawyer, LOST, Shawn spencer; psych, the captain; Brooklyn 9-9
I would like to be able to put the winchesters in here somewhere and can't believe I didn't even nominate them but despite how much I love their characters, I hate the way they've been written recently and can't bring myself to nominate either one of them because I don't like their characters recently due to the writing.
Not nominating 2 from the same show is definitely the best plan since only one can get in and yes, animated character count as long as they are from TV. I like to credit selective amnesia for my love of the Winchesters. See if Supernatural ends at season 3 in my mind, they are the greatest characters of all time. :-P
ReplyDeleteOh Tommy Merlyn, how I still miss you? You were far too good for your so-called friends.
You probably know this, but he is joining OUAT next season as a series regular! (I'm just hoping we see Emma Rigby reoccur and maybe get some random resolution to Jafar in the second half of the season).
ReplyDeleteI could totally go for another spin off, as long as Will was the lead! :)
You too? I thought I was the only one with Post-Morairty Depression. She makes the scenes crackle and is so witty that I simply cannot get enough of her on screen.
ReplyDeleteDone! Patrick Jane, Raymond Reddington, Felicity Smoak, and Elizabeth Keen!
ReplyDeleteI hope so. He definitely seems the most nominated from Teen Wolf.
ReplyDeleteBwah! The Js wouldn't have to mutiny because the fandom would have Carter on the run more than a pack of leviathans with killing spree notoreity. He'd never escape.
ReplyDeleteSadly it is not my call. I would love to do silly polls all summer to make hiatus pass faster but it doesn't really fit the SpoilerTV business plan. I would however love to see someone do this as a USD poll submission. Or maybe I'll do it on my website instead. it would be fun.
ReplyDeleteSadly the combination of Emma Swan and Henry is too far into the suckage for me even for Will's shining beacon of snarky light to penetrate. I'd be throwing things at my TV before the fourth episode. I do totally agree with the Red Queen showing up though. In fact, if we must have romance as the center of these fantasy shows, I'd love to see the spin-off be Will and Ana on their own fighting whatever.
ReplyDeleteReddington won for best new character of the season for me. He's so manipulative that I never know if he's telling the truth and so unpredictable that every reaction is a surprise. Definitely a power character.
ReplyDeletehihi she's always been a favourite of mine. I was glad to see someone else with 24 excitement though :P Seems we have similar show interests ahah.
ReplyDeleteThought it was a fun idea. So many good characters out there that it is hard to choose favourites! I chose mine based on the feeling I got when I thought about their best moments so I figured it might be fun. Will be exciting to see which characters make it and why people chose them as their favs! Love this competition. Keep up the hard work! :)
ReplyDeleteSo really what we need is a cup where we have supernatural characters separate from humans because it is really hard to compare Dorian who was awesome with a human character... but what category would he be in? Robot?
ReplyDeleteThanks and keep sharing those great TV memories. I'm going to start adding that to my posts for this contest too. Hopefully you'll start a movement...and a lot of great discussion.
ReplyDeleteHa! Yes, Dorian counts as male. Although I have to say that I prefer Maldonado to either of those 2 lovable goofballs.
ReplyDeleteI nominated:
ReplyDeleteMale:
Rumplestiltskin/Mr. Gold (OUAT)
Frank Underwood (House of Cards)
Female:
The Evil Queen/Regina Mills (OUAT)
Red (OITNB)
I feel like, with the exception of Frank Underwood (who I just nominated because his quips are HILARIOUSLY AMAZING), all these characters have gone on long, great journeys. With Regina's arc from the Evil Queen to the good person she is now to Mr. Gold's fear of love to a (mostly) changed man to Red's innocence to amazing badass-ery, these characters are just great. :)
I've been planning on watching The Blacklist for a while now, but I have too much to watch now. One day I'll give it a try.
ReplyDeleteIf you get the time, I would suggest marathoning it. The Blacklist can get incredibly frustrating on a week by week level because things progess very slowly. In marathoning, it largely overcomes its biggest flaws.
ReplyDeleteOh now I'm even more excited to watch House of Cards. It got recommended to me a few days ago. I am a big fan of witty quips and snark.
ReplyDeleteLOL, that's totally a new diagnosis!
ReplyDeleteFantastic show, one of my new favorites. I highly recommend it!
ReplyDeleteI also suffer from Jeremy Carver Antipathy Syndrome and Love Triangle Gastric Reflux. Let's just say I suffer from a few TV related illnesses.
ReplyDeleteThank you!!!! Jon Snow, illegitimate Stark son from Game of Thrones.
ReplyDeleteThis was tough, there are so many fantastic characters out there:
ReplyDeleteMale 1: Sherlock Holmes, 'Sherlock'
Male 2: Stiles Stilinski, 'Teen Wolf' (I may have forgotten to write his surname, but I'm assuming it still counts)
Female 1: Annie Walker, 'Covert Affairs'
Female 2: Lydia Martin, 'Teen Wolf'
I guess we picked exactly the same male characters ;)
ReplyDeleteIt's really hard to choose! I went with:
ReplyDeletePatrick Jane (The Mentalist), John Crichton (Farscape)
Teresa Lisbon (The Mentalist), Olivia Dunham (Fringe)
Honorable mentions to the other characters from Fringe, Farscape and TM, and also pretty much everybody from Person of Interest.
Also:
Kate Beckett, Richard Castle (Castle)
Jaime Lannister, Tywin Lannister, Arya Stark, Brienne of Tarth (Game of Thrones)
Buffy Summers, Rupert Giles, Spike (BtVS)
Samantha Carter (Stargate SG-1)
John Sheppard, Elizabeth Weir (Stargate Atlantis)
Miss Parker (The Pretender)
Dana Scully (The X-Files)
Ben Linus, John Locke (LOST)
Gene Hunt, Alex Drake (Life on Mars / Ashes to Ashes)
Gwen Cooper (Torchwood)
And many others...
Kevin Spacey is beyond fantastic in House Of Cards.
ReplyDeleteI feel like there are a lot more good male characters than female characters. Am I the only one who thinks this, or is this just because I'm a guy?
ReplyDeleteI nominated Castle, Beckett, Red, Scully.
Reddington is awesome but Keen sucks. The blacklist is a one person show.
ReplyDeleteMale 1- Damon Salvatore (TVD)
ReplyDeleteMale 2-Niklaus Mikaelson (TO)
Female 1-Katherine Pierce (TVD)
Female 2-Regina Mills (OUAT)
Great minds and all of that. :-P
ReplyDeleteThanks for sharing your picks. I don't watch either of these shows but I've heard great things about both.
ReplyDeleteThey are definitely getting a lot of nominations.
ReplyDeleteKeen is not my favorite but generally there are other things I like about the show. In fact, from the time we knew he was a spy, Tom became my favorite character. I also loved Meera. So sad she's gone. Aram continues to be a favorite as well and I hope we don't find out he's evil.
ReplyDeleteHa! There's only one Stiles sono surname needed. I debated adding Annie Walker as well.
ReplyDeleteJohn Crichton narrowley missed my nomination. I thought he was a great character as well. Same thing goes for Giles and Sam Carter. So many great choices.
ReplyDeleteJohn Locke, Lost
ReplyDeleteTyrion Lannister, Game of Thrones
Sarah Manning, Orphan Black
Lagertha, Vikings
God, it was difficult to choose only 4 characters!! I would also like to see Walter White, Daniel Holden, Boyd Crowder, Ragnar Lothbrok, Ben Linus, and Lucas Hood being nominated.
Not because you are a guy. TV is still lopsided when it comes to great female characters. They are out there but it takes a bit more effort to find them because a lot of female characters are still there simply to feed a male character's development. It gets frustrating to me, especially when I look at how unbalanced my original list was. There were well over twice as many males as females on it.
ReplyDeleteRegina was by far my favorite thing about OUaT. She rocked.
ReplyDeleteI didn´t think about nominating Mr Lector - glad somebody did. What a great character!
ReplyDeleteI also picked John Locke though, all the characters from Lost should be nominated. :-)
I would love to see Lagertha make it into the contest as she is one of the better developed female characters.
ReplyDeleteShe is the BEST!!!!
ReplyDeleteWas? U don´t like OUAT anymore?
Most definitely! I can't figure him out. It's such a treat to have such an unpredictable character
ReplyDeleteI couldn't stand Emma and Henry so I dropped it in season 1. Still Regina and Gold were phenomenal.
ReplyDeleteI accidentally pressed enter when I was only halfway through my form. Any chance it can be scrapped and I can put in my full nomination?
ReplyDeleteDone. Go ahead and redo the whole thing.
ReplyDeleteThank you.
ReplyDeleteMy picks:
ReplyDeleteCarter and Finch from Person of Interest.
Arvin Sloane and Sydney Bristow from Alias.
I am still planning on getting to Alias this summer but time is rapidly running out on me.
ReplyDeleteYou NEED to see Alias. It's a brilliant show with so many awesome characters. The final season isn't as good as the rest but it's ending makes up for everything.
ReplyDeleteJust remember: There's only one Sydney Bristow ;-)
It wasn't easy to pick, there are so many wonderful characters!
ReplyDeleteBut in the end it went like this:
Walter Bishop- Fringe.
Tyrion Lanister- Game of Thrones
Emily Thorne- Revenge
Carrie Mathison- Homeland
Can I nominate the same character twice?
ReplyDeleteIf i am honest nothing has come close to filling LOSTs shoes , i don't think i will ever enjoy something as much as i did that. Although a few things have come close Game Of Thrones , Person Of Interest and Fringe. The same really goes for Fringe after LOST ended that was my favorite program.
ReplyDeleteWalter white and Frank Underwood
ReplyDeleteAlicia Florick and Peggy Olson
Haha, no clue about the Jeremy Carver one but definitely with you on love triangles, so sick of them.
ReplyDeleteI also went with Walter White and Alicia Florrick. Peggy Olson--good call.
ReplyDeleteRick Grimes, Walter White, Alicia Florrick, Carmela Soprano.
ReplyDeleteThat's happened to me a couple of times. Aggravating. The worst was when I was submitting a USD poll and I didn't get to add my favorite choice or "other."
ReplyDeleteI know three of these characters, but what show is Frank Underwood from?
ReplyDeleteHouse of Cards. He's the main character.
ReplyDeleteSorry, but no. It will only count as one nomination.
ReplyDeleteI am surprised that Ziva hasn't been mentioned more. I realize she is no longer on the show but she was very popular and if I remember right did well in this contest last time.
ReplyDeleteIt has been at the top of my summer to-watch list for several years now and yet the time just always seems to go by too quickly. I'm starting to feel like it will be on top of my lsit next summer too.
ReplyDeleteI think that's the first time someone has mentioned the Sopranos. That's kind of surprising to me since it was such a popular show.
ReplyDeleteTrust me, it's definitely worth it.
ReplyDeleteHe's the show runner on Supernatural that screwed everything to hell.
ReplyDeleteI chose 3 popular picks sure to be on many others favorite character lists- stiles teen wolf, damon tvd, and cosima orphan black but one I know i will probably be alone in nominating- Ronnie Mitchell eastenders, even if no one watches or keeps up with british soaps I can't help it that ice queen is my spirit animal had to give her a nom.
ReplyDeleteI really hope Walter gets into the contest. It's nice to see all the love he's getting here.
ReplyDeleteI love when people nominate characters out of the norm because they stick out to me and often inspire me to put their shows on my to-watch list.
ReplyDeleteNone of my picks will probably make it into the Top64 but I submitted them anyway.
ReplyDeleteFemale:
Amelia Sheperd - Privare Practice
Brooky Davis - One Tree Hill
Male:
Max Blum - Happy Endings
Gary Walsh - Veep
Good for you. One of the things I like most about these contests is that it makes people aware of shows they might have missed. For instance, I have never seen Happy Endings but I know it has quite a passionate fandom. This reminds me to add it to my to-watch lsit as well.
ReplyDeleteOk. Thanks!
ReplyDeleteHouse of Cards is pretty damn good if you like political shows.
ReplyDeleteCarmela has always appealed to me. She was stuck in this kind of life and recognized that she couldn't get out of it. So she made the best of it.
ReplyDeleteJust call us drifters,or better yet searchers!
ReplyDeleteLagertha is a very strong character and has had some good storylines. sadly she will proberly not get enough votes to make it into the 64.
ReplyDeleteI also love Carrie, Homeland, Arya Stark, GoT and Olivia Dunham, Fringe, but I figured that they would get enough votes. :-)
Yep, same for me. Proberly have 12 - 15 males characters that I would like to nominate and only 5 or 6 female. However there is a lot of great female characters, they are just not the lead so it takes me a second to think of them.
ReplyDeleteMale
ReplyDeleteGregory House - House
Benjamin Linus - Lost
Honorable mentions: Tyrion Lannister (Game of Thrones), Dexter Morgan (Dexter), Jesse Pinkman (Breaking Bad), Stiles Stilinski (Teen Wolf), Sherlock Holmes (Sherlock), Rust Cohle (True Detective), and Rumpelstilskin (Once Upon a Time).
Female
Juliet Burke - Lost
Daenerys Targaryen - Game of Thrones
Honorable mentions: Debra Morgan (Dexter), Dana Scully (The X-Files), Regina Mills (Once Upon a Time) and Lydia Martin (Teen Wolf).
This was a tough one! I nominated some unlikely characters, cause I know others will come forth cause of the shows popularity! Can't wait for the draw!
ReplyDeleteHouse of Cards!
ReplyDeleteMost of my favorite characters are not the lead so it's less that for me than the idea that many females in a show generally revolve around the males' storyline. They aren't written as completely and they tend to be defined by relationships more than as separate, distinct characters. If they are the lead, then I usually have the same issues with them as their male lead counterparts. I think Hollywood still has a long way to go even if it has gotten marginally better.
ReplyDeleteI think we are going to be very surprised by who does NOT get in compared to who does. If the contest nominations ended today, several prominent characters I expected to be shoo-ins would not be in at all.
ReplyDeleteGreat thanks!
ReplyDeleteHarold Finch (POI)
ReplyDeleteBenjamin Linus (LOST)
Melinda May (Agents of SHIELD)
Regina Mills (OUAT)
Never thought of submitting them as a USD poll...I've done one of those (and it was selected) - I got no plans this Sunday, maybe I'll submit something!
ReplyDeleteIf you do it on your website..,let me know, would love to participate!
HA!!! Very true - now that you mention it, I bet Jared would "accidentally" leak a photo on Twitter during filming and Vancouver would never be the same again!
ReplyDeleteJim Moriarty, Jessie Pinkman, Emily Thorne and Donna Noble
ReplyDeleteI hope you do make it a poll. I think it would be a whole lot of fun. I can think of several vehicles that made their shows better.
ReplyDeleteI'm surprised that more people haven't said Rumpelstilskin in the comments since he is a pretty popular character.
ReplyDeleteAwesome. So what did you nominate? I love hearing about others' favorite characters because it sometimes inspires me to check out new shows.
ReplyDeleteMy plan is to take a few hours calculating nominations on Thursday and then holding any run-off polls if we need them. Sometimes these things are very close. If we don't need them I will post the brackets on Friday so people can predict who they think will win and talk about favorites. Just a fun way to get people speculating on the contest before it goes live on Sunday afternoon. I will also explain the technical stuff for how shows were ranked on the brackets in the Friday post so people aren't confused. Transparency tends to keep people from starting conspiracy theories on me. :-P
ReplyDeleteI really hope Melinda May makes it in. She's one of the best kick butt females on TV right now.
ReplyDeleteAgain I know 3 out of the 4 characters. What is Donna Noble in?
ReplyDeleteHa! Moosketeers and minions alone would take out Carver if he were foolish enough to kill off Baby.
ReplyDeleteDoctor Who :)
ReplyDeleteSounds Great! Cant wait for it to start and to hear who everyone thinks will win the contest , for me i already have a winner in mind.
ReplyDeleteThe Doctor - splendid chap, all of them - Walter White, Sarah Manning & Buffy
ReplyDeleteI´m glad to hear it. It would be nice to see some different characters in the spotlight this year. Thanks for putting it together, it is so much fun.
ReplyDeleteSelected at mostly random from the first batch of characters to jump into my head:
ReplyDeleteWill Graham - Hannibal
Chuck Bartowski - Chuck
Kiera Cameron - Continuum
Caroline Forbes - TVD.
The last one I selected because I think that the character and her actress deserve props for being the most consistent and standout elements of a show that has become rather inconsistent at this point in its run.
I didn't go back far in my nominations but I should have.
ReplyDeleteDean Winchester
Ichabod Crane
Raven Reyes
Ava Crowder.
Other than Dean, I went with the less obvious to make sure they got a vote.
All time for me would be a big disarray of characters!
Buffy, Spike, Willow, Zander, Tony Soprano, Alicia Florrick, Will Gardner, Mark Sloan, Nikita, OuaT Regina, Boyd Crowder, Raylan Givens, S1 Gemma Morrow, S1 Jax Teller, Walter-Fringe, Felicity Smoak, Gaius- BSG. This is too hard. I'm just loving everyone's nominees. Some great characters that I've forgotten.
Male: Killian Jones/Captain Hook from OuAT and Oberyn Martell from Game of Thrones
ReplyDeleteI'm pretty sure that the male characters from OuAT and GoT will end up being Rumplestiltskin and Tyrion Lannister and I'm totally okay with that,I love them both, but I thought that Oberyn in particular deserved a nomination this year.
My runners up are Daryl Dixon from The Walking Dead,Castiel from Supernatural,
Varys and Robb Stark from Game of Thrones.
Female: Lagertha from Vikings and Arya Stark from Game of Thrones
My runners up are Margaery and Olenna Tyrell from Game of Thrones,Veronica form Veronica Mars,Melinda May from AoS.
Glad to see that somebody else nominated Lagertha. I´m also a big fan of Varys and Daryl, but I doubt that they will make it in the 64.
