Character Cup - 1B
15 Jul 2014
2014 Character Cup Bones Cancelled Shows Dominion Penny Dreadful Teen Wolf The 100 True BloodOur Character Cup is off to a great start. The first set of polls contained no surprises according to the statistics, although I was surprised that Nikita beat out Jack Bauer. Kudos! Congratulations also to Patrick Jane, Buffy Summers, and Sherlock Holmes. Thanks to everyone who joined the discussion and started some great topics. It makes hiatus go faster and me enjoy the contest more. Updated brackets below the poll. Until tomorrow, happy voting!
Polls end - Tuesday around 3 pm CST
Prediction contest results - Sharon Seymour, Famous 4 It, Janna, and Toni are all at 100% this round. Great job!
Today's Topic - Continuining from the fascinating conversation Blue Star started yesterday, how does your summer TV viewing compare to your fall? Do you find yourself more enthralled with the characters of fall or summer? Do you watch the same type of shows in both? Whose your favorite character so far this summer? How about in fall? Has summer TV changed for you over the years?
Current Bracket:
Bellamy!
ReplyDeleteVanessa Ives and Stiles (I love Eric but I love Stiles so much more)
ReplyDeleteThe one and only Benjamin Linus for me today.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the great start to the Character Cup yesterday. I appreciate all the great comments and everyone keeping things civil. You make this a lot of fun.
ReplyDeleteAs far as today's topic goes, I tend to find fall show characters a little more engrossing simply because I get more episodes with them. Still I tend to have summer shows in my favorite list - Burn Notice, Teen Wolf, White Collar, Graceland, etc. I think summer shows have more octane in them so the plots move faster, which I love. Still TV has sure changed since now there are almost as many shows on in the summer as in the fall. It's making it hard to catch up with them all.
Only Ben for me today!
ReplyDeleteI'm trying to pace myself and am currently watching two other shows. I'm actually using an app to randomly choose which show I watch next, so hopefully Lost S3 gets picked on the next spin.
ReplyDeleteN/A
ReplyDeleteBellamy - I stopped watching Lost when it became a convoluted mess and while I love Michael Emerson, I'm tipping my vote to Bellamy. I see a lot of potential for this character. To not only be a hero but to have the most growth of any of The 100 sent to earth. Ben never impressed me much.
N/A
Stiles - This one was a little hard. While I used to love a lot about Eric, I've always loved Stiles. TB is an epic mess, Eric is MIA more often than not and when he is around, he's a neutered version of S1 Eric. Stiles is always Stiles and Dylan O'Brien is a wonderful actor.
I'd advise binge-watching the rest of the seasons before anything else ;)
ReplyDeleteBen - He was my favorite character on LOST so it was pretty easy choice.
ReplyDeleteI don't really enjoy binge-watching. It diminishes the enjoyment for me. I prefer to let it all sink in and anticipate the next episode rather than to dive right back in.
ReplyDeleteOrange is the new Black is the only show I binge-watch but that's because I have been waiting a year for a new season.
Voted for someone in every poll today :)
ReplyDelete1) Archangel Michael (I love Dominion and Michael, I watched Alias but don't really remember it :P )
2) Bellamy Blake (I nominated Bellamy so...yeah, I watched Lost up to season 3, I don't remember who Ben is :/ )
3) Vanessa Ives (I nominated Vanessa as well and this is who I want to win although I doubt she will :( Temperance Brennan is a good character too but I much prefer Vanessa)
4) Stiles (Well obviously I had to vote for Teen Wolf even if I nominated Scott! I watch True Blood as well but don't really have any opinions on the characters on that show)
If I had to order these four characters from favourite to least favourite (even though I really love them all), it would be: Vanessa, Bellamy, Stiles & Michael. Im so glad none of these were up against each other (yet!) because that would have been a really tough decision, all the shows that these characters are from are in my top 5 shows.
Ah. Tbh, with all the mysteries and whatnot that's in Lost, binge-watching might actually help with understanding it all. To each their own I suppose.
ReplyDeleteHotness versus cuteness. How can I choose?
ReplyDeleteThis was fairly easy for me today since I really don't know 3 of the characters.
ReplyDelete1. Michael - Basically because Alias is still on my to-watch list. While Michael is my favorite of the angels, that's not saying much on any show. I prefer the secondary characters on Dominion to be honest. Noma is bound to be a kick butt warrior and Arika is terrifyingly brilliant. The females are better developed on Dominion than most shows and that's exciting to watch.
2. Bellamy - I am not a fan at all of the shipping of his character but taking that away, he is more complex than almost any character on the CW. I particularly love the complicated relationship he has with his sister. To have to hide your sister for 16 years had to be hard on them both.
3. This is the only one I had problems with. In the end I chose Vanessa more for her potential than anything.
4. Stiles - Hands down one of my favorite characters. His loyalty to Scott, general all-around good guy appeal, and Dylan O'Brien's portrayal of him make him stick out in a large cast. Season 3B really showed depth to Stiles and gave O'Brien a very meaty dual role. It is Stiles that made Teen Wolf one of my favorite shows.
I voted by default today too. I kind of like this strategy because it is so easy.
ReplyDeleteI think Bellamy has a whole lot of potential as well. He started as one of the most messed up which he turned into great leadership potential. I am excited to see what happens with Bellamy when the 100 and the adults end up in the same place again. He seems to thrive better without any formal authority so I expect a lot of problems between him and Kane.
ReplyDeleteU are killing me here! Bellamy vs Ben!!!??? Had to vote Ben, he was so delusional!
ReplyDeleteAnd the last 1 I didn't even vote, can't decide!
Ha! It's great when you get a no-brainer. It happens so rarely as the contest continues.
ReplyDeleteSydney Bristow, Vanessa Ives, and Eric Northman, although I've stopped watching True Blood altogether because that show's final season is officially worse than any of the previous ones.
ReplyDeleteBwah! Best comment and I completely agree with you. I've been dabbling in the notion of cloning. Sad that Almost Human got cancelled because I really needed notes on how to make that cupcake copier too.
ReplyDeleteBy default today,Sydney Bristow(who,to be fair, would have probably gotten my vote anyway),Temperance Brennan and Stiles.
ReplyDeleteSeason 3B was amazing. I am so glad they gave Dylan O'Brien a chance to show off his acting chops. I hope that Lydia or Derek get a chance to do the same thing this season.
ReplyDeleteI think that in the short amount of time that they had in season 1, they have done a great job of developing his leadership skills. I would like to see him interact with more people as well as people who have greater skills than he has. I think that will really make his character grow. Out of eveyone on the show, Bellamy seems to be the best developed at this time.
ReplyDeleteThe one I really want to make it to the next round is Ben
ReplyDeleteLinus. Such a wonderfully complex character!
So, today:
ReplyDelete1. Sydney (Michael is a really interesting character, but still a new one)
2. Ben Linus (see: above)
3. Bones (don't watch Penny Dreadful)
4. Stiles! (Eric was my favorite on TB, but Stiles has like his own level with me, tbh)
Oh I agree season 3 was the best as far as the show goes, I meant the fans during season 3 ruined his character for me. I want the show to go back that too, it's odd that during season 3 a lot of the fans wanted to go back to season 1&2, and now that it has, a lot of the fans want to go back to season 3 :P It feels like season 3 attracted a new audience that doesn't like the way season 1&2 was. We'll see how this season goes and then maybe season 5 might find a balance between the way season 3 was and the way the show used to be.
ReplyDeleteI agree, and since you mentioned leadership skills it'll be interesting to see if both Clarke & Bellamy act as the two leaders next season like they did this season or if one of them steps up.
ReplyDeleteHe has an excellent chance. There are not a whole lot of people who have watched The 100, being a midseason show on The 100. Comparetively LOST is known by a lot of people, for better or worse. When I made my predictions, I have Ben winning this poll as well as a couple more.
ReplyDeleteI have heard so much great stuff about Sydney. I cannot wait until I watch Alias and meet her.
ReplyDeleteWhat a shame! If fans spend so much time on a show, it's a pity when the final season is a disappointment.
ReplyDeleteThe 100 was one of my favorite midseason shows in a long time. Did you get to Twilight's Last Gleaming? Because that's when the show really kicked it up a lot and the Ark became the most interesting part of the show. It was a little uneven before then.
ReplyDeleteTotally agree!
ReplyDeleteI would like to see three leaders emerge - Clarke, Bellamy, and Finn (not as a love triangle by the way) - because they have such different perspectives that we get all points of view covered. However I am even more intersted in what happens when the Ark and the 100 rejoin together. That's going to throw the leadership ladder all askew.
ReplyDeleteSydney Bristow, Ben Linus, Vanessa Ives and....I don´t know who to pick. Went with Eric in the end. Like Stiles too though.
ReplyDeleteI actually started watching the show a little before season 3 started so I binge watched seasons 1 and 2. I thought the pilot was excellent and season 1 good but a little too "teen" for my taste. I cared not one iota about their romances but lived for the action and incredibly quick plot. This summer I rewatched season 1, taking notes as I went and I found that I really loved some episodes but other were more fast forward worthy. Season 2 I think got a lot stronger in mytharc and I loved the whole kanima storyline. I look forward to going over it in great depth over the winter hiatus.
ReplyDeleteSeason 3A was the first time I watche din real time, compelte with week long impatience and hiatus blues. I adore how intense it was although I thought there were far too many characters (a problem we now have again) and I hated the true alpha stuff. Season 3A made Teen Wolf appointment TV for me and zoomed it to the top tier of shows I watch. Then came 3B and it was incredible. DarkStiles is my favorite villain, mostly because of Dylan O'Brien. Still it started in such a rush. I'm not sure my heart stopped racing throughout the entire premiere. Sure it had it's iffy episodes, like the flashback one, but overall I thought it was an adrenaline junky's dream. Frankly, I'm not sure Teen Wolf can top it, but I live in hope that it does.
Enjoy watching Alias it is a really good show and Sydney is such a great character. You will love her.
ReplyDeleteI think that is I had seen Alias, I would have chosen Sydney too. We've only had 4 episodes with Michael so he's a little new for me too. I'd like to hear more of his backstory, which Gabriel hinted at, and see him interact more with the characters. It looks liek we are going to get that with Alex. Hopefully others too. As for Stiles, he's on another level with me too. He and Buffy tie as my second favorite characters in the whole contest.
ReplyDeleteOnly Sydney Bristow and Ben Linus.
ReplyDeleteSydney has been my favorite spy for a long time. She managed to adapt to any situation her wild life took her, and she managed it with style. Also bonus points for a major villain being
her own mother
.
Michael Emerson is just a fascinating actor. Also you gotta love it when a show brings on a guy for a short guest spot and turns him into a major character because he's such a great character and actor.
The whole show if full of great characters played with great skill. Sloane, Marshall, Jack, Sark, and of course things I won't mention.
ReplyDeleteSpoiler? Now you've got me even more intrigued about this show.
ReplyDeleteThe show takes a lot of surprise twists and trust me when I say it's best if no one tells you. Pretty much every final season ends with a shocking ending.
ReplyDeleteI am a big fan of plausible plot twists and general butt kicking. I'm fairly sure I know some of the big twists just from being on SpoilerTV, but I look forward to seeing how it all goes together.
ReplyDeleteFor me it was :
ReplyDelete- Sydney Bristow (My favorite spy with Annie Walker close 2nd)
- Ben Linus (I haven't watched the 100 yet)
- Brennan from Bones
- And Stiles without a doubt!
I'm definitely a fan of Annie Walker, so that bodes well. I would encourage you to give The 100 a try. It is a lot edgier than I ever expected with real consequences for the character's choices, especially when there is no clear right answer. It ended up being a whole lot better than I ever expected and is one of the shows that I am now anticipating its return in the fall.
ReplyDeleteI won't vote. Both of them are great and either way I'll be happy. I would probably vote Stiles but Eric is just so magical in S7 so I let the "others" decide.
ReplyDeleteI loved Alias because of Sydney/Michael and Victor Garbor. I will watch that man play any character, on any show. I just love him.
ReplyDeleteI was a fan of the show and followed a lot of fans on twitter. Then they turned into shipping demons. I had to whittle them down one at a time. When you become angry, demanding or you pout because the story isn't what you want RIGHT NOW, I have to say you're leaning towards the obsession I see in another fandom. I want no parts of that. I do enjoy romance on my shows. In it's time and place. This is not a rom-com, it's is a SciFi drama. Ugh. Sorry, this shipping thing is a pet peeve.
ReplyDeleteI do too. I'm also very curious as to the leadership dynamic next season and how far into the season we get to that. I really don't want the kids to be disrespected or pushed off to the side to play a merry band of rebels. They came in and not only survived, they fought to live. They developed as humans and as a family. They made a home. I know Kane and Abby will respect that but I hope they don't undermine the work they did or the progress they made.
ReplyDeleteNo argument from me. I see your point. I try to only tweet with fans of the show, not shippers of a couple only. Well Malia but c'mon. She's shippable. So funny and is not afraid of anything but math. She'll take try to fight an unknown berserker but pale at the sight of algebra. I love it.
ReplyDeleteI see that kind of obsession in a lot of fandoms :P As much as i try not to let it ruin a show for me it's very difficult not to. Im just glad that romance takes a back seat in The 100 (in the show anyway), did you stop watching because of the shipping or are you still watching it?
ReplyDeleteI'll be interested to see what changes take place when the two groups do meet. The way The 100 have been doing things definitely isn't going to be the way the Ark survivors handle things.
ReplyDeleteYou gotta love how many people felt the exact same way about math as Malia. I would have been tempted to hightail it out of there as well. Malia is rising quickly in my favorite characters because wherever she goes humor follows. And often chaos.
ReplyDeleteI expect that the transition will be very rough from all sides. I too fear that the teen's accomplishments will be undervalued by the members of the Ark, but at the same time teen attitude will get old if they don't listen to the adults as well. What I would love is to see another council like they had on the Ark with both sides represented equally. They each have a knowledge base that will be useful and I hope they relaize that sooner rather than later.
ReplyDeleteThat works too. :-)
ReplyDeleteOnly Temperance Brennan for me today..
ReplyDeleteOh no, I still watch. It's a great show. I just stopped following fans turned into shippers and when I live tweet I try to block the all caps yelling of a certain shipper name.
ReplyDeleteThanks, I will surely try it when I have some time.
ReplyDeleteI only watched the first two episodes, I really liked it but I was already watching too many shows and it was a little slow so I decided to marathon it in the summer, but I hear A LOT of good things about it.
ReplyDeleteI thought Dylan's performance was fantastic in 3B as well, I really hope Jeff gives the other actors an opportunity like that, i'd really love to see it. I agree there are far too many characters in the show now, I said i'd like to see the actors get an opportunity like Dylan...they have to actually get screen time first :P
ReplyDeleteseems like the shows that are currently on are garnering the votes lol (exception being Stiles vs Eric, thank satan for pitting then against each other D:)
ReplyDeleteStiles vs. Eric is just impossible... I vote for Eric because I'm with True Blood since 2010, but I love them both!
ReplyDeleteJust Archangel Michael for me today. :)
ReplyDeleteSydney Bristow
ReplyDeletemy first tough one today. the only characters i know where facing off against each other and i was surprised when i couldn't decide between bellamy and linus. bellamy is my favourite character tom the 100 but ben was just an incredibly awesome and often creepy character. my initial thoughts was to vote bellamy but i think that's just coz the 100 is so recent and lost feels like it was decades ago. but on giving extra thought i went with ben. he was just such an interesting character who never failed to surprise me and played so well by micheal emmerson as well
ReplyDeleteHow the hell is ANYONE beating out the one and only Sydney Bristow? Granted the show did end in 2006 so I guess it could be considered "old" (but not to me). I've never even heard of the other character, wtf.
ReplyDeleteCome on guys, vote for her!
Benjamin Linus and Stiles.
ReplyDeleteBen gets my vote because he is one of my favorite TV characters ever. I loved every scene he had in LOST, and I consider him one of the best anti-heroes ever. Also, Michael Emerson's acting is brilliant.
I love Stiles so much, he is one of the main reasons I watch Teen Wolf. I loved his storyline in season 3-B.
Not as easy voting today as yesterday but ultimately I went with: Michael, Bellamy, Vanessa and Eric.
ReplyDeleteI'm surprised Bellamy is doing so well against Ben - I thought for sure it would be an embarrassing blow out! Ben's character was one that I loved to hate but Bellamy started out that way too. Over the course of six seasons, I had softened towards Ben but would never trust him or his motives. While I didn't love to hate him anymore, I still wanted to strangle him more often than not the last season. In Bellamy's case, over the course of only 13 episodes, I actually came to like Bellamy - that kind of a change is what lead to my choice of Bellamy over Ben.
I haven't seen a single episode of Teen Wolf so Eric got my vote even thought I dropped True Blood after season 4. However, in the episode competition I read so many good things about it that I think I will check it out!
Today's Topic: I still watch considerably more shows in the fall than summer but with more original, quality programming during the summer, that is changing. I'll give just about anything a try so it doesn't matter if it's a summer vs. fall or cable vs network show. What ultimately determines what I watch and when is availability to stream. Some shows I would love to watch next day on Hulu but it's not available so I have to wait for the whole season to come out on Netflix/Amazon or worst case, DVD.
Teen wolf stiles
ReplyDeleteVoted Bones and Stiles, don't watch any of the other shows (so far this cup has been easy on me because I don't have to think about it).
ReplyDeleteBenjamin Linus.. one of my absolute favorites! Michael Emerson rocked that character.
ReplyDeleteSydney Bristow ( I'm sorry but actor playing Michael and Gabrial on Dominion have zero screen presence for me. I can't help but measure them against Paul Bettany and Kevin Durand.) Is Dominion a Canadian show in a later season than is airing on SyFy?
ReplyDeleteBen Linus
Temperance Brennan
and
Stiles ( Currently, he is my favorite character on TV. Has been for a while.)
Really? LOST vs The 100? I'm sorry Bellamy, but I have to vote for Ben here.
ReplyDeleteSydney Bristow is by far my favorite female character in a TV show. For me,Alias would have been worth watching even if she was the only cool character among the cast. But she is definitely not! There are so many great characters, both good and bad.It has such interesting villains, which I think is a huge deal.I was always torn between wanting for the good guys to win but also wanting to see more of the bad guys. They had managed a great balance. And,of course, there's awesome action, twists, complex relationships between the characters and other things, which I'll let you discover on your own. : )
ReplyDeleteI'm looking forward to your opinion once you start watching!
Vanessa Ives.
ReplyDeleteSydney for the first one. I like Michael well enough, but he hasn't earned the right yet to be called a great character. Maybe next year.
ReplyDeleteBen Linus for the second. I don't know who Bellamy Blake is, but there are very few characters who could rival Ben Linus.
No votes for the last two as I don't watch most of those shows.
Sydney Bristow and Ben Linus. Too bad neither of them is doing too hot.
ReplyDelete"It feels like season 3 attracted a new audience that doesn't like the way season 1&2 was." totally agree with you, tw fandom became pretty annoying during season 3
ReplyDeleteTeam #Eric.
ReplyDeleteHence my problem with all the new characters. We don't have enough time for key characters like Lydia and Derek already. Now I have to watch lacrosse tryouts instead of Lydia developing her banshee powers.
ReplyDeleteSo true. Plus the people of the Ark think of these kids as criminals, but they are not the same people they were when they were booted. They need to realize that the situation has changed and quickly.
ReplyDeleteI completely understand TV overload. I'm still in the middle of it and it's summer. I'm not sure how I'll manage fall shows returning. If you do get to The 100, let me know what you think of it.
ReplyDeleteI am a fan of kick butt females and spy shows so I know it will be great.
ReplyDeleteI have heard a lot about Sloane over the years. He sounds like a smart and complex bad guy, the best kind.
ReplyDeleteI was not a fan of Victor Garbor in Deception but that is probably because I wasn't a fan of Deception. I was happy to see him play Ichabod's father in Sleepy Hollow though. Hope he gets more flashbacks.
ReplyDeleteI agree that villains are a key part to a show's success. Every hero is made by the quality of villains he/she fights so you have to have great villains to have great heroes. I look forward to watching Alias as soon as I get caught up on all the TV I am behind on.
ReplyDeleteI have never seen True Blood, but I am getting from people's comments that Eric is one of the favorite characters even if they aren't happy with this season.
ReplyDeleteShows that are currently on do have an advantage compared to cancelled shows. They have a currently active fan base that makes it easier to spread the word about the contest and people are still talking about them on a regular basis. The longer it's been since a show has aired, the less chance they have in any internet contest even if it was a great show.
ReplyDeleteIt seems to be the toughest segment of polls for most people today. I wonder if that is because both are from supernatural shows so they have similar fans.
ReplyDeleteYour angel is doing very well here. Pretty good for a character that has only been on 4 times.
ReplyDeleteI didn't expect Bellamy to be demolished because The 100 has a pretty decent sized fan base on SpoilerTV. However I expected it to be close and for Ben to win. Today is wrecking havoc with my bracket because my predictions are way off.
ReplyDeleteSorry it was tough today. I have it pretty easy in the first round until we get to the bottom right bracket. Then it all goes to Hades for me.
ReplyDeleteSydney barely made it into the contest. She was tied with 9 other characters for last place so it is unlikely that she would go far no matter who she was up against in the first round. Shows that have been canceled a long time ago are rarely on people's minds as new shows take their place. Such is the way the internet works. It's sad but great characters get replaced with new great characters in people's hearts.
ReplyDeleteOne of the biggest surprises for me when looking at the nominations was that Ben Linus got the most noms from LOST. I was sure it was going to be John Locke. Do you think that having Emmerson on PoI made Ben more active in people's minds? I dropped LOST shortly after Ben came on so I don't know if he was always this popular or not.
ReplyDeleteI hope to finish Penny Dreadful this week and the character I am most looking forward to is Vanessa. She impressed me in the pilot and I cannot wait to find out her backstory.
ReplyDeleteWithout a doubt Alias contains 2 of my all time favorite villains with Sloane on top of that list. You'd have to see the whole thing to see why but over the 5 seasons he has the most complete story of any character I've ever seen.
ReplyDeleteI know Stiles is one of your favorites and I like him too. Stiles is the normal in a show full of abnormal. Eric is.....well, the coolest vampire I guess. I liked him better in the first 3 seasons though (same thing goes for the rest of the characters on TB). Looks like Stiles is gonna win. It ok with me, he is the best part of Teen Wolf. If he left I would not watch it anymore.
ReplyDeleteI expected Ben to win over Bellamy by a small margin, but as TV shows spend more time off the air they tend to lose popularity in online polls. It's definitely affected this contest so far. The X-Files, Buffy, LOST, and Fringe were ranked far lower than I remember them ever being and a show with only 4 episodes aired was ranked above them all. The internet has a short memory.
ReplyDeleteI do hope you check out Teen Wolf and let me know what you think. I waffled over watching it for almost a year and even had the DVD unopened because of the silly name and MTV network. Then I broke down and watched the pilot and was hooked. Season 1 has its share of silly teen romance stuff that is fast forward worthy but the action and pacing are top notch. The story moves so quickly and then only gets better in the following seasons. Season 3B was a highlight for me in particular. In fact, it is in my favorite seasons of TV list.
I still have a lot more shows in the fall too but I am also more picky then. I chuck shows faster and make more decisions based on pilots alone. I have less time in fall so i have to. I try to give every show a chance unless there are elements I know I will hate. For instance to shows about adultery pilot this week but I am avoiding them since it's a TV pet peeve of mine. I'm sorry you have to wait for some great shows. I have to live stream a few on first watch and that can get buggy so there's a few shows I wait to marathon on Amazon/Netflix as well. Thanks for discussing TV by the way. I appreciate it.
Lucky you. I hope that continues and your favorites move on.
ReplyDeleteI think Michael Emerson rocks in general. :-)
ReplyDeleteSydney Bristow, Ben Linus, Vanessa Ives, and Eric Northman for me today!
ReplyDeleteAs far as I know, Dominion is first airing right now. Others like Spartacus are being shown as first-time airings on SyFy but have aired on other places before. I never saw the movie version of Dominion but I do have a hard time with Gabriel's acting at times. Michael is still very much poker faced for the majority so he's harder for me to read. As for Stiles, he's my favorite character on a show I am still watching. After 3B, he moved up the favorite character of all time ladder quite a few notches too.
ReplyDeleteIf I had seen Alias, I probably would have voted for Sydney as well. I look forward to seeing where Michael goes for the rest of the season. Only then will I be able to determine if he's a great character or not.
ReplyDeleteIt's going to be a tough contest for characters from cancelled shows I think.
ReplyDeleteLOST was a popular TV show, and I think Ben already was a fan favorite. You don't like Ben? Why? :) And yes, I was surprised John wasn't nominated, or Jack (I think he won the Best Character competition a couple of years ago).
ReplyDeleteI love Ben. One of my top 5 favorite villains of all time. But i nominated Locke as well.
ReplyDeleteIf it weren't for all the nudity, I would probably watch True Blood and I get the appeal of cool vampires (instead of all the lame ones). I actually picked Eric to win this in my predictions and was unhappy when Stiles pulled him in the first round. Nothing like two popular characters from the same genre going against each other right from the start. As for Teen Wolf, I wouldn't be able to watch it if Stiles or Scott left. Their brotherhood is the foundation of the story for me, much in the same way that Supernatural is Dean and Sam.
ReplyDeleteI did not realize that Alias was a Bad Robot production. Thanks!
ReplyDeleteI have nothing against Ben. I just don't like LOST, although yes it was very popular, especially on this site. Locke and Jack both got nominations, but Ben got more so he went in. I was just so used to seeing Locke and Jack as the most talked about characters whenever LOST was in a competition that I thought for sure one of them would get the nod over Ben.
ReplyDeleteI will :)
ReplyDeleteI did not like LOST that much either... I loved Ben, but
ReplyDeletecould not bring myself to care about any of the other characters.
I see a lot of possible bracket busters here and I'm happily surprised. Even when it's mine!
ReplyDeleteIt is not necessarily a bad thing, though. I would much rather
ReplyDeletehave that than if people were to vote for the “classics” in every competition, never
making space for the new shows.
Agreed. I don't think it's a bad thing either. Like you said, it would get stale quick if there wasn't new blood. Personally I think that anything that brings more people participating and talking about TV is good - new or old.
ReplyDeleteThree of the four I voted for went through :) Sadly Vanessa(my favourite character in the contest) didn't make it :(
ReplyDeleteMe too. I only had one go through so my bracket is completely busted. It should be interesting to see how far these characters will go before falling probably to Patrick Jane.
ReplyDeleteSorry she didn't make it but next year she will be better known and will have a better chance.
ReplyDeleteLike most shows they kept killing off my favorite characters and leaving the ones I despised. I could not stand Locke and wished for his death every episode I watched.
ReplyDeleteDoes that mean you're definitely doing it again next year ? :)
ReplyDeleteSo far I am remarkably impressed by how much fun this contest has been to run. People have done a great job of following the 4 rules and that has made me want to continue. We'll see how it goes when we get to the right side of the bracket, but I think that it's safe to say that this contest will be back next year. :-)
ReplyDeleteYep! :D It's the first official series under the production company! It started during Felicity's last season.--Some trivia is that in Felicity's second season there is minor reoccurring character named Bryan "Burky" Burke. As I am sure you know, Bryan Burke is also a founder with J.J. Abrams. Alias allegedly was created because Abrams imagined /joked about Felicity becoming a spy on summer vacation. Some of Alias' cast actually appeared on Felicity (Jennifer Garner, Greg Grunberg, Amanda Foreman, Kevin Weissman, Rob Benedict, and Amy Aquino) and Terry O'Quinn also has a pretty neat reoccurring role!
ReplyDeleteThat's some cool back story. Thanks!
ReplyDeleteBones vs Stiles is going to be a tight race when it comes around both have strong fan bases.
ReplyDeleteand she was willing to back up Scott when he was going to see Peter.
ReplyDeleteSatan in a V-neck. If Malia hadn't already captured my imagination, she would have been a favorite at that point for sure.
ReplyDeleteThat one will be tricky. Teen Wolf audiences fluctuate a lot on SpoilerTV. Sometimes they show up en masse and sometimes hardly at all. I'd love to see a Stiles vs. Bellamy Blake contest to be honest.
ReplyDeleteHoly upset, Batman! Can't believe Bellamy pulled off a win! It's true about the internet having a short memory but wow - that was not expected! Are you keeping any stats behind the scenes of how many nominations each character received and how many total votes they get over the course of the competition? It would be interesting to see how the voting breaks down between new/returning/finished shows and even by network.
ReplyDeleteI checked for Teen Wolf on Netflix and it's not available to stream but Amazon Prime has the first three seasons for free with my membership. I may give the first couple episodes a shot this weekend and see how it goes. The DVD's were reasonably priced so if I do like it, I may just buy the DVD's to watch while I'm on the treadmill ;-)
I agree about being less forgiving of fall shows. If I'm not stalking Spoiler TV for any tidbit about the show after 3-4 episodes, then I either drop it completely or put it in the "binge on Netflix" pile. I limit my online streaming to Netflix, Amazon Prime and Hulu + so I don't have too many problems with it but some of the players on the Network websites leave much to be desired (*ahem* ABC *ahem*) so if that's the only way I can **legally** stream online then I usually just wait for it on Netflix/Amazon or buy the DVD - DVD's have become so cheap that finding a new show because I picked up the DVD's super cheap at Target has happened more than once (that's actually how I found Arrow and most recently Under the Dome).
Thanks for putting this competition together - so far it seems everyone is following the golden rules which makes discussing my favorite shows that much more fun!
The real trick is which new show is going to pull off the upset next time when it is Dominion's newbie fans versus The 100's Bellamy Club. That vote might come down to the wire and be the first truly close competition we have of the contest. I will look at compiling statistics if I have time. Right now I am one review and a bazillion LWiT shows behind but it would be fun to see how it trends and I like that kind of thing. It probably won't be that in depth though. Sorry. Teen Wolf used to be on Netflix but then Amazon bought it. It wasn't a big deal to me since I have both but it did kill an online marathon of the show, which was a huge bummer. Those are a whole lot of fun.
ReplyDeleteI too buy a lot of shows when they go on the cheap. Teen Wolf was actually one of those. Season 1 cost me $10 so I figured even if I didn't like it, I could give it to someone else. I ended up buying the second season before I even finished the first just so I would be caught up before the third season started. Love the "stalking" STV measure for whether a show is worthy of continued watching. It made me laugh. For me it depends on whether the show goes to the bottom of my list to watch for Last Week in TV or not. If it stays on the bottom too long I get behind and obviously it's not worth continuing on a hiatus, if that.
I have been very pleasantly surprised by how well this contest is going I hope people keep being so awesome when we come to the right side of the bracket, whch will be the real challenge. I have had a lot of great conversations already and I know that I am definitely going to try Alias after all the positive buzz it got. This has been a lot more fun than most contests for me as far as organizing and keeping the discussion going goes. I credit that to all the fabulous people taking time to participate like you.
I haven't seen any episodes of Dominion yet so Bellamy will get my vote but that is going to be an interesting competition since both shows are on Networks that don't always get a fair shot from viewers and are new (Dominion is still airing, right?). Neither have had the time to really build a large fan base like the LOST and BATB of the world.
ReplyDeleteI've had a really long week (yep, it's only Wed and I've been saying that for two says already) so I think I am going to watch the pilot while eating dinner tonight. I just want some good old fashioned entertainment tonight!
I have several shows that I dropped watching live for various reasons but still binge watch when the DVD's come out. NCIS is a good example. I still love the show but there are so many awesome new shows that I want to check out that some of my veteran shows are being pushed to DVD viewing when they go on sale. My favorite time of year is right around Thanksgiving when all the stores have DVD wars in my area...I can usually pick up the new season of Big Bang for $10 and get older seasons of other shows for $5-$10. Unfortunately, my DVD collection is starting to take up as much room as my book collection!
Just finished the first episode of Teen Wolf - yep, I'm hooked. They pretty much had me at "which half of the body are we looking for?". Stiles is my new favorite character!
ReplyDeleteYeah! I'm so glad you liked it. Stiles is my favorite as well (love that snark) followed by what I collectively call Team Parent. The first season has its ups and downs and the bowling episode is particularly painful, but it improves every season, culminating in season 3B, which is one of my favorite seasons of all TV.
ReplyDeleteWhoops! Looks like I underestimated the popularity of Dominion!
ReplyDeleteHa! I think everyone did.
ReplyDeleteI am so hooked it's crazy - I stayed up way past my bedtime and watched two more episodes! Yep, if the rest of the parents are anything like Scott's mother, I'm gonna love team parent. The scene where she almost brained Stiles with a baseball bat for coming in thru the window had me laughing to the point of tears. And Allyson's dad was in Stargate so I of course love him (even if he is trying to kill Scott and Derek). I think I'm going to buy the DVD's too - if this series only gets better from here, then I'm all in!
