Beauty and the Beast - Operation Fake Date - Review

Jul 2, 2014

This episode almost defies analysis due to its just plain wacky nature, but I'm going to do my best anyway.  I do enjoy when BATB pours on the crazy sauce, and boy did "Operation Fake Date" have some of that to spare!  So I'm going to go with a slightly different approach to this review to break down the aspects of the episode that I liked and those I felt were a bit off-key.  I can't wait to hear what you guys thought of this episode...!

The Good:
-The fact that this episode title sounds like a Sweet Valley High book from the early '90s.
-Vincent and Catherine's "disguises" and fake baby carriage at the beginning of the episode: This was probably the perfect way to start a bizarre episode, and I have to hand it to Kristin Kreuk and Jay Ryan for making the comically quirky aspects of VinCat totally adorable and hilarious.

-J.T.'nT. - Basically, J.T. and Tess were so cute and funny in this episode that they almost stole the whole hour.  Poor J.T.'s attempt to prove that he could be "edgy," after thinking that's what Tess wanted, was priceless.  And Tess' confession at the end that she felt a little nervous about sex shops and strippers, and would rather just be with J.T. sans theatrics, was so sweet.  Love these two!

-Heather is going to make it onto both the "good" and "ehhhh" lists in my review.  I really enjoy the frenzied charm that Nicole Anderson brings to the character of Cat's sister, and despite the weird way the writers had her behave in "Operation Fake Date," I was still happy to have her around.  She brings a fun energy to the ensemble that makes me look forward to seeing what she gets up to next season as a regular.  I liked her chirpy PR coaching of Vincent, too.

-Vincent's reading material in solitary lockdown: Beyond Anger.  Ha!  He's such a great combination of hot and hilarious.

-References to the actual mythology of the show: We actually heard about Rebecca Reynolds again and saw her journal reemerge, with Cat studying it to learn more about her ancestor and "her beast" Alistair.  This whole undercurrent to the mythology was brought up and dropped back in ye olde days of "Torible" earlier in Season 2, and I'd really like to hear more about the history of beasts and the Reynolds family.  Fantasy shows do benefit from having a rich backstory and structure to the mythology, and I think that BATB's writers would do well to continue building up their world in this respect.

-Adorable and sexy VinCat moments: For those who were regretful we didn't get it last week, this episode had a nice prelude to sexytimes scene of Cat and Vincent in the youth hostel, with him asking her to wear the blonde wig one more time and both of them giggling.  Gotta appreciate them making the best of life on the run!  There's so much chemistry and sparkling humor between the two characters that they really light up the screen.
One of the deepest moments of the episode came when Vincent told Catherine it's    understandable that she has a lot of anger (specifically seen this week towards Gabe) which she habitually represses.  This is very true, and Cat does spend a great deal of time and energy soothing everyone else's frayed nerves while her own frustrations boil within.  It was nice to have Vincent tell Cat that he was kind of glad to be able to clean up her mess for once.  Even if that mess was Gabe's possibly dying, which wouldn't have been such a bad thing!

More good moments:
-J.T. providing pink furry handcuffs for Gabe: Because LOL.
-J.T. gets one more shout-out - for functioning as The Voice of the Audience after VinCat resuscitated Gabe: "now we're hugging because he's alive?!"  Amen, brother.

-Vincent being exonerated: We don't get much of an explanation on how this is even possible, but at least he's been freed from fugitive status.  That's a pretty huge deal that our fab four fought long and hard for over the last batch of episodes...though it's unclear if their efforts really had anything to do with this turnaround.

-Awesome cliffhanger: After all the utter plotting lunacy it took to get him there, we had a psycho-scary Gabe beasting back out, leaping through windows past a shocked J.T. and Tess, and ripping poor Beth's heart out.  This harrowing conclusion was potently successful in setting the scene for an exciting and high-stakes season finale.

-Obvious best scene in the whole episode: Cat kicking Gabe's ass!  Seriously, I could watch a whole episode just of that.  Damn, he really had it coming, and Catherine served it up so excellently.

The Ehhh....
-The actual premise of the episode: the idea of Catherine going on a "romantic date" with Gabe after everything that has transpired was more than a little out there, and I think she might have been playing too easily into his manipulative schemes.  There's using Gabe's obsession with Cat to the fab four's advantage, and then there's giving Gabe the opportunity to get even madder and crazier. Unfortunately, going out with Gabe succeeded much more in the latter way than in the former.  Also, the whole "date" segment made my skin crawl, though at least that means the show succeeded in being frightening, which was probably a big part of the goal of the premise.

-Cake decorating?  Limo?  Really?  Not to mention the ridiculousness of having Gabe come back after realizing that he has Catherine's cake instead of his own.  I don't know, this part seemed a bit contrived and silly to me, though again I have to hand it to Sendhil Ramamurthy for carrying off every flourish of nuttiness the scripts give him with such enthusiasm.  Gabe's sob story and explanation of his reasons for doing horrible things was pathetic, and his disappointment at realizing Cat's obvious true agenda was laughable.

-Mysterious FBI-looking dudes taking Vincent's blood and apparently exonerating him: This might click plotwise if we get some more explanation, but right now it's a little too murky and flimsily presented to seem plausible.  Who are these men? What's their connection to Gabe, whom they are surveilling?  Did they give Gabe Vincent's blood, since he injects something to make him a beast again at the end of the episode?  I wonder if this has anything to do with Reynolds.

-Heather's procrastination on pressing charges against Gabe: I sympathize with the fact that she's been traumatized, but when Heather kept putting this off in favor of organizing her bachelorette party (for her upcoming, not-at-all-rushed wedding to the invisible fiancé), it was a little hard to take.  Her bossiness and scolding of Tess was also fairly annoying, though I am trying to cut her slack since she was snatched and held in a dungeon last week.  We'd all be a little out of sorts.

-VinCat procrastinating on taking Gabe out for good: I know Cat can't just kill someone in cold blood because that's just not who she is.  I can even go along with her desperate attempts to save Gabe, since she's not a killer and couldn't deal with having accidentally taken someone's life.  Alright, okay.  But we don't have to be quite so relieved and happy about saving Gabe, who's an out of control and destructive murderer, one who will clearly keep killing since there's no way for him to ever get what he wants and that's what fuels his violence.  Furthermore, I hardly think that giving Gabe a stern talking to and then un-handcuffing him and leaving him with only J.T. and Tess for protection while he wandered around free after acting like a maniac throughout the whole episode was a wise move.  And J.T. and Tess wondering, "is he still in the bathroom?"  Really?  I wouldn't let that psycho out of my sight for a millisecond.
Even though "Operation Fake Date" had its questionable points, I still liked it for its stronger aspects.  And I'm super-psyched for the season finale, which looks sure to be a major event, not least of all because the producers had every reason to fear it might be a series finale at the time of filming.  That means, I hope, that we will get real closure (I think Gabe, at this point, has to die) and a happy ending for Vincent, Cat, J.T., and Tess - with Season 3's continuing adventures to look forward to as the best possible bonus.  I wonder if there will even be a cliffhanger next week, and what it might entail.

    1. I thought it was the best ep of the entire series. The disguises were great. The fake date with the cake decorating worked. Heather's party and Tess and JT worked. It just all fit together. And Gabe beasting out again. I thought it was a great ep.

I´m with you again in most of the ups and downs :)
I just think the FBI guys probably have some to do with Murfield again ... I don´t know.

Great review and love final Vincat scene and JT and Tess was adorable :)

    3. I enjoyed the ep. It was a crazy combination between funny and dramatic, with action and romance. I loved V asking her to wear the wig one more time, so cute! lol I only wish instead of Sweden's next door they had referenced his Native country and had him "fake" a New Zealand accent as a joke. After he asked her to wear the wig she could've asked him to do the accent...role play at sexy time ;) cause we all know his natural accent is super sexy!! lol

Anyway, I believe that Gabe injected himself with the beast serum back from when Sam was caught. I don't think he has anything to do with the guys in the suits. He had been telling Beth he had it and it did go missing a few eps back, so that's how he became a beast again IMO.

      Great review, awesome ep. :)

    5. Thanks! Right, the "FBI" guys seemed very Muirfield-ish to me. Loved VinCat and J.T.'nT. this week!

    7. Virginia, enjoyed your review as always, I agree with you about the date, Cat giving Gabe the chance to even smile in her face was very unsettleing to me, however I know what she perceived as a greater call was ok, I'm glad Heather finally came to her senses, for a minute she was season one brat, as for Gabe if this was any network, but the CW, with the way he's playing all kinds of crazy he'd be consired for an Emmy, I know the season finale is gonna be a wild ride, I hope we don't have to wait to long to see, good things coming for the Fab Four !!! Thanks Virginia love your view on this show I love!!!!

    8. I loved the episode, the disguises were great,I didn't see that coming but it really worked & I know Jay knows how to push a baby carriage after all he has a baby in real life,I know he was upset so luckily Catherine took over the stroller. The date with Gabe I didn't like, her killing him I did,she really kicked his a_ _ _ YEAH!!!!! reviving him,not again!!! Oh well on to JT & Tess, loved loved loved their scenes, the writing for them was fantastic.Heather on the other hand is trying to wrap her head around everything going on,she's gradually getting all of this ,When JT pulled the tranque gun out & took control that was good ,what would we do without JT? I can't wait for the finale to see how this will all play out,it's going to be an amazing episode & I feel that it should be 2 hrs. long.I know there will be a cliffhanger,I only hope they don't seperate VinCat again,we need to keep them working together & no other love interest's for season 3 for V&C or JT & Tess.

    10. Great review Virginia as always. VinCat disguises were hilarious, Vincent reminded me of Super Mario with that mustache. I loved Catherine's beat down of Gabe, it was totally awesome and a long time coming! Vincent's wrath in the season finale will be 10 times worse for Gabe and hopefully will end him once and for all. There so many cute moments between JT&T. Vincent and Catherine were adorably quirky and hilarious as always. Jay Ryan always makes his adorableness so sexy, it drives me nuts...makes me have hot flashes all the time! This was a fantastic, intense episode and the season finale will be no different.

    11. It was one of my favorite episodes of the series so far. It had everything I love - action, romance, fun and mystery. Gabe injected himself with the serum that JT made back when Tori was still around. He denied having stolen it at that time but he obviously did.

    13. I really enjoyed this episode. I thought it had all the elements that make this show great. Really awesome moments with the core four that everyone has mentioned (the sexy time at the end being my favorite) I really wish that they had let Gabe die. I was so pumped when Cat took him down. I was so over him in that moment, I think I actually cheered a bit when he went down and didn't have a pulse. I was totally on board with JT when he said "now we're hugging because he's alive?!?!" I had a feeling all this "crazy Gabe" was leading back to him beasting out but I thought it would be because his DNA reverted, totally forgot about the vile that went missing from Sam.
I'm really looking forward to next week though, I am in agreement, I think next week we'll finally say good bye to Gabe. I don't want him around in season 3.

    14. Great review as always. Loved the episode, too. Just one question: how can Heather officially implicate Gabe in her abduction? She was abducted by Tom Sheckman and his goons. Gabe - as always - stayed in the background. He never puts himself in danger. Vincent and Catherine suspect Gabe instigated the kidnapping, but there is no proof, and they cannot ask Sheckman, because he is dead. Unless I missed Gabe's confession this is a plothole.

      ReplyDelete
    15. Thanks! Good point about the possible plot hole...maybe Cat, Tess et al were just hoping that Heather backing up their story would convince the authorities about the kidnapping. Gabe does make it hard to pin him down.

      ReplyDelete
    16. Yep, I completely forgot about that vile! Totally explains how Gabe re-beasted himself.

      ReplyDelete
    17. i think they just made a "detective" conclusion that Gabe was the one behind it because it was Sheckman and his people that took her and that connection led back to Gabe. regardless of how they figured out if it was him, he admitted that it was when Cat confronted him about it. Small plot hole but I would rather them have "cracked that case" off camera instead of them chasing it down when we all knew who it was.

    18. Can someone explain me why Vincent could sense Gabe during the shower scene but he couldn't sense Gabe was out of the door with the cake ?

The fake date: I cannot really figure out how could one single date been enough to keep Gabe and the "reporter issue" under control . Maybe for one day .What about the days to come? And how far was she ready to go ? I'm sorry but Vincent was right to be mad about it because she was acting pretty superficial and enjoying the moment 'too much' with a psycho who 1) exposed and tried to kill Vincent 2) kidnapped and tried to kill her sister 3) tried to kill JT and Tess 4) killed a poor witness 5) Put an end to her carrier. Well, she is not too picky when it comes to kiss bad guys isnt' it ? Totally out of context and, to my eyes, a bit disgusting.

    20. Great episode. But as a beastie will sit through even when it is a bad episode and smile and try to see the positive in it. But loved this one.
Gabe gave the wrong cake to Catherine just so he could go back. Love the kick ass of Catherine on Gabe and I personally would have left him dead, but Vincent brought him back so Catherine did not have to love with the guilt.
Can not wait for the next week but bit sad being the last episode for the season and not knowing when season 3 starts

    21. Thanks Virginia!! I really enjoyed the ep, don't want to get hooked in the bizarre things that happened, but there's only one thing that's keep bothering me since a few eps ago. The fact that they do not show their emotions to each other, Cat's little kiss saying "you're a free man", when she found him in the rooftop on ep 17 after she thought he was gone, when he save her from the officer in the suburbia, when agen Knox told them about the exoneration on ep 18. I don't know, I feel like something is missing. And don't get me wrong, I love Vincat, the chemistry between them is amazing but...

    23. i keep getting afraid of the season finale beacause kristin kreuk called it emotionally traumatizing

      ReplyDelete
    24. Thanks! Really looking forward to the finale as well.

      ReplyDelete
    25. She also said that it is both a series ender and a cliffhanger and that we would have been happy with it as a series ender, so I think we will go through many emotionally traumatizing parts, but the end scene will be Vincent and Cat together on the bench, thinking their normal life together is about to start but somewhere in a lab more beasts are being created. i will be okay with whatever as long as Gabe is gone, and neither Cat nor Vincent get taken away and they are separated AGAIN!

      ReplyDelete
    26. You make some good points, and I agree on wanting more from the VinCat scenes and dialing back the Cat/Gabe aspects. :)

    27. Lovely review, very clear and delicious to read. A turbulent episode for me - it seemed they wanted to solve everything from night to day, which ended up resulting in some inconsistencies that I don't need repeat; you already said. Overall, I enjoyed the episode.
How always the last scene of VinCat made me stay wanting more.

    28. Virginia, I was enjoying gabes beating just a tad too too much. It was fantastic and what's worse, i still felt he needed more ass-kicking. gabe is such a wanker and so delusional that he is so convinced he is in the right........seriously.........!
Cat i believe is also desperate to be rid of gabe and i think going on that fake date she thought she would pacify him and he would leave her and Vincent alone.
I do hope that in the upcoming episode, they have Vincent actually kill him. It would not even be a match for Vincent. gabe is just scary, but Vincent has skill, power, & speed of which gabe has None and envies Vincent!
I did love the part where Vincent says that being blonde has gone to Cat's head because she claims to have some power over gabe.
I have searched and read as many reviews and recaps as i can on this episode and i love yours Virginia because i agreed with each point! it's almost as if i wrote it (yeah i wish!!!!!)
      Good on you!

      ReplyDelete
    29. do you think Vincent will rip the gabe's skin off?

      ReplyDelete
    30. Vincent will do more than rip Gabe's skin off. I hope he tears him apart, that what he deserves for all the terrible things he has done. Gabe has always been the real beast not Vincent.
