Beauty and the Beast - Déjà vu - Review: "Those who fail history are doomed to repeat it."

Hey Beasties! Are you ready to discuss the season 2 finale of Beauty and the Beast 2x22: Déjà vu? I know I’m not. But I also know I have to do it. I can’t believe that season is actually over. I feel a little empty inside and have no clue what I'm going to do with myself on Mondays at 9 pm now (I'm open to suggestions, by the way). I found a lot to love and not a lot to nitpick so that’s always great. I guess it’s time to dig in, so let’s get to it.

If I had to make a long story short I would sum up it a little something like this: Gabe went on a killing spree. Cat became obsessed with her ancestor, Rebecca Reynolds’s journal. Tess questions her relationship with JT while keeping point on the Gabe manhunt back at the 125th and JT got gravely injured. But all’s well that ends well because by episode’s end Gabe was dead, JT was doing just fine, Tess sorted out her feelings and VinCat finally a little uninterrupted alone time.

I was a little disappointed with Sherri and Jenny’s last of the season outing last week and was totally prepared to be bummed out by Brad Kern having his hand in the last episode of this season. But luckily this episode was not written as solo effort by Brad Kern, he got an assist from Roger Grant (one of the writers that have grown on me over the course of season 2). The pacing in this episode was (as it has been in the case of almost all of the episodes since we got back from hiatus) was frantic, tumultuous, lopsided and if I'm going to be totally honest, a little disjointed. I get what Brad and Roger were going for with the flashbacks but it just kind of fell flat for me personally both as a storytelling device and the execution of it on the technical side. The heart of the story was nice but the dialog was a little stiff and kind of boring.

But hey at least one thing didn’t disappoint me and that was most the directorial execution which was provided by Stuart Gillard. While I was not a fan of the flashbacks, I thought everything in the present day was breathtakingly beautiful and stunning, even the interior shots were well composed, lit and blocked. The performances he pulled from the Fab Four was great, especially Kristin Kreuk’s. You guys know I could drone on for days about the technical stuff so I will just move on…

The theme that I loved the most that was presented in this episode was team work and this theme applied to almost everyone in the episode. Any good Beastie knows that Cat and Vincent are better together than they are apart when it comes to accomplishing a goal. I also love that we revisited the idea of destiny and fate and how in the end Cat and Vincent always choose each other AND THAT IS WHAT MAKES THEM SPECIAL AND SETS THEM APART.

Another theme presented in this episode was of course the title, déjà vu. Not only are we at a similar point from last season, Cat is going through something eerily similar to what her ancestor Rebecca went through as well. I wasn't a fan of Gabe and Vincent rematch at first because it felt too ‘been there, done that’ but that actually turned out to be one of my favorite things about this episode. Some recurring elements that came back into play yet again were the gem, the collar, Rebecca Reynolds and her journal ‘Big Brother’ style surveillance and the taskforce. The motifs of being in control and learning from others mistakes was front and center as well (I can only hope the writers, executive producers and any other network powers that be will take the latter lesson to heart).

On to the meat and potatoes of this review…

Cat was on fire this episode. I was a little put off by her obsessiveness over the journal at first (and that was probably due to it being in my top three least favorite plot devices of this season of Beauty and the Beast). I loved her desperation and conviction. But as the parallels droned on the use of the journal and the flashbacks grew on me. I loved seeing Cat take charge of a situation and handling it competently. I do feel the use of this plot device for drawing the parallels was a tad bit heavy handed but it served its purpose well. Kristin Kreuk really brought her A game in this episode. I felt her pain, her rage, her hopelessness and her determination to not let history repeat itself. The best Cat moment for me had to be when Vincent’s blood from the vials is all over hands and she realizes that the plan ISN'T right. That they need to do this TOGETHER or it won't work. I also like when Cat questions herself and tells Tess that it doesn't feel right putting the plan into motion without Vincent. She finally realizes it isn't about which one of them saves the other more often or who sacrifices the most, it’s about them being together and when they are together there is almost nothing they can't accomplish. It warmed the cockles of my heart to be honest. I was shocked that Cat was the one to kill Gabe (again) in the end because damn she literally just saved his life (for a second time, friendly reminder for anyone who is keeping score).

While I feel like I saw more of Allister than Vincent during this episode for some reason, I found everything to do with Vincent to be on the mark. OK, first of all, I love the continuity of the big, blue, fluffy robe when we got to the first present day scene of the episode. Secondly, I’m glad they finally showed a little something, something off in that robe again and that little something, something happened to be Jay Ryan’s abs (they have been sorely missed). I have to say that I found Vincent to be full of wishful thinking and quiet seething rage this whole episode. It was fun to see the domesticated side of Vincent that knows how to cook and apparently can cook very well. It was also a nice change of pace to have Vincent telling Cat she needs to relax and stop worrying. It was interesting to see Vincent take on Gabe once again, especially since Gabe now had the upper hand by being a stronger beast. The fight scene was fun but not nearly long enough. I really wanted Vincent to be the one to kill Gabe, especially since Gabe was once again a beast. I thought maybe that was the point of making Gabe a beast again so Vincent could get a cathartic release and with that bury his animal instinct for at least a little while. Guess not. But I’m glad that killing Gabe together brought Cat and Vincent closer together (wow, that was a very odd sentence to write).

I’m a little miffed about everything to do with JT in this episode. For starters, he didn’t get nearly enough screen time. Secondly, I absolutely hated the way Tess treated him for the majority of the episode. Especially since this episode started the morning after the important chat with Tess about sexual compatibility and everything seem perfectly fine (well, until Gabe beasted out and escaped). Lastly, they actually thought that it would a good idea to tear him to shreds and string him up. Oh, wait, also the fact that no one ever bothers to thank him and show him a little appreciation for all the amazing stuff he does. I’m still shaking my head about this. I’m ever going to be over this particular part of the episode.

Speaking of disappointing material for a character… Every single time Brad Kern has something to do with the script the character of Tess gets super wonky. I don’t know what it is. Maybe he doesn’t like the character. Maybe he doesn’t understand the character very well. Maybe he just likes drama for the sake of drama. I don’t know and I don’t care. What do care about is having Tess in character and explored and fleshed out a little more. All of this stutter step and stop with the character’s development and storyline has been frustrating and it is almost always at the hands of Brad Kern. Tess was out of character for most this episode and it infuriated me. Tess was pushing JT away. Why? I have no clue. Tess was feeling unsure about her relationship with JT. Why? I have no clue. Tess suddenly wants a relationship like Cat and Vincent’s. Say what now? Not only that but she confesses it at the worst possible time. Tess if anything has a laser light focus and a propensity to bottle up her emotions for better or worse. But at least Tess being good at her job and the best gal pal ever didn’t change or was impacted by this kerfuffle and her breakdown over JT and interactions with him at the hospital totally made up for it.

Gabe did not go into that good night without a fight. I found the material written for Gabe to be hammy as hell but Sendhil still managed to knock his performance out of the park. I wish that we’d had more time of Gabe being the actual big bad and had gotten a more gradual descent into madness but it is what it is. I loved Gabe taunting Vincent. The best villains are the ones that can get inside our heroes heads and Gabe certainly knew how to push Vincent’s buttons. When he attacked JT I knew there was no going back. There was absolutely no way Gabe would not end up dead (as it should be, you touch JT and somebody should pummel you until your heart stops beating). Gabe was a man with absolutely nothing to lose. His job and the power that it provided was gone. There was no chance of him getting back with Cat and worst of all he’d intentionally turned himself into the thing he hated the most. Cockiness was always Gabe’s problem and in the end it was his downfall. I loved the look on his face when the collar and gem was snapped onto his neck and all the smugness drained from his body. Priceless! That was probably one of my top five screencaps from the episode.

• The flashbacks weren't actually flashbacks, more like Cat's imaginative re-enactments.
• The heavy use of the "flashbacks".
• The technical execution of the "flashbacks"
• The "romantic" parts were very bland and chaste (Beasties deserved to be shown a little more than that after this season)
• Sendhil is no longer in the cast. He was awesome when it came to interacting with the fandom and I will (and hope you all will as well) support him in any of his future endeavors because once a Beastie always a Beastie.
• This hiatus is going to be a bitch BEAST

Miscellaneous
Style Spotlight – You probably already guessed it... Cat's blue leather motorcycle jacket.

• JT is going to become a beast sometime during season 3

Thank You Beasties
I just want to take this time to thank all the Beasties who have taken the time to stop by and read my reviews. It means so much me to interact with you guys even when we don't see eye to eye about things. I had a blast reviewing this season and made some friends and had some great experiences. While I may love the story of season 1 better than season 2, this season will always have a special place in my heart because it was the season when I found the place where I belong and it’s right here in the BATB fanmily.

I will try my best to find plenty of fun things for us to do over the long hiatus, I promise. I have two pretty cool things in the works for the following two weeks. One is a highlights and lowlights recap of season. The other project is a roundtable discussion featuring some fandom favorite reviewers. I’m definitely going to find time to review every single episode from season 1 over on my blog as well. A review will be posted once every two weeks starting at the end of August.

I also want to have a Netflix live streaming event as soon as season 2 is available and I will tweet more details as the time gets closer so be sure to follow me on Twitter if you haven't done so already.

  1. Thanks for the review. I really enjoyed the ep! so sad season 2 is over!! i just want to share something that is really bothering me, the gem!! It is supposed to stop him from beasting out when it´s on him right? now it is some kind of kryptonite? it was outside the cage, I mean what? I´m kind of confused about the gem, sometimes it works one way, sometimes not so :/

  2. Thanks, for the recap & review, as usual you're spot on, this episode gave the entire cast the spotlight and they really did shine, the opening sequence with Tess had me really confused, where did that come from, but at least she did redeem herself, and the saga of Gabe is finally over, with the overuse of him throughout season two in a sense I'll miss him, but will get over it, Cat and V working together what a team, and I also loved that blue leather jacket, the girl does rock some nice jackets, were in for a very long hiatus, as always I'll check in to see what you got in store to help with the break, Thanks again for all you do!!!

  3. Thanks for the review. This was an awesome episode from start to finish. JT survived, him and Tess are fine. Vincent and Catherine worked together and put an end to Gabe once and for all. It made sense that Gabe died at the hands of Catherine, after all she was the one he was "protecting". Vincent and Catherine are happy, free and very much in love. We have a long hiatus...thank God we got a season 3! I have pre-ordered my season 2 dvd already, as soon as it comes, I'll be watching season 1 & 2 like crazy until season 3 starts.

  4. I personally liked the flashbacks, however I wouldn't want to see them continue into S3, maybe the odd time but definitely not on a regular basis. But I thought they worked and that surprised me because usually I'm not a fan of them.

I loved the ep overall. Tess did seem a little off and I have really missed those spectacular VinCat moments, but hey! We got the abs!! ;) lol There's always S3 for the rest. CAN'T WAIT!! :)

  5. I like Stu Gillard . I'm pretty sure he did a cameo in this last episode.

  6. Great Review ...as usual..except that I won't miss Gabe..he has been around and dominated season 2 more than he should have. I am hopeful you will stay with beasties ...it's gonna be a long wait for S# and we need you writing and supporting and helping keep the fans together.

  7. Hey, Lovelies. Just wanted to pop in ask you guys if you'd be interested in a discussion thread along the lines of 'Burning Questions from season 2 of BATB'. I really love meta and I really love the fandom's imagination and there are a ton of plot holes and questions that will probably never get answered so let's fill in the blanks ourselves. If you are interested please respond with to this comment with your question or you can email or tweet me. Every week I'll pick 5 questions for us to discuss.

  8. thanks Lilith :)!! agree with many of your points and I really did enjoy the episode, though I did feel it could do with a slighly slower pace (to give us time to feel the emotions) and better writing. But I have watched it a few times already and the more I watch it the more I like it :) Ok, regarding Tess - I can see what they were doing in this episode and I liked the way they initially depicted her as a bit (or a lot) of a b...h. Tess would normally not get together with J.T. and they are getting closer, even emotionally and this scares her and she doubts herself and the relationship. and yes she is treating him badly, cause Tess when feeling vulnerable tends to put up a harsh front. ok, not fair on J.T. of course, but at least after the near death experience she realised she really does care. in fact, i loved her performance in this episode adn their interactions. I also really enjoyed the flashbacks and how they played out. But the writing was not particularly clever and had it not been for our brilliant cast it would have shown! and please slow down the pace a little bit next season, just a bit lol.I absolutely loved the themes of the episode (the ones you mentioned above) and the fact that all that really unites vincat is love. this was a good season finale, much better than last year's finale for sure and really looking forward to season 3. And as u say the wait will be a beast!! A REAL BEAST!! So anything to keep us going Lilith is much appreciated :)

  10. Hi :Lilith
First I want to say YES to the questions and talking about them through the hiatus-I don't even want to call it that because it seems like it will be forever- but I have a lot of questions from both season 1 and 2 that are burning a hole in my psyche!

As for the episode. I liked that it filled in some gaps and was a sweet, VinCat ending. I like shows hat don't always end on some horrifying note and you have to go for months waiting to see it resolved. I know that the ending was written not really knowing about season 3 but I liked the fact that it set up some terrifying thoughts for season 3 but with a good ending, which I really think, whether the writer's knew about Season 3 or not, was needed after this season.

You and I are usually on the same page on almost everything, but this time I feel that ess was right on her character. Granted I agree she has been not herself all season, mainly because we saw so little of her really, especially as her own person. I felt that who Tess really is, is the brash exterior with a puddle of goo in the middle and that is who she was in this episode.

The person I thought was off was Cat. I know that in the end, she figured things out with Vincent and how to defeat Gabe, but the whole first part of the episode I felt she was off. The premise of S2 was Who am I apart from this relationship. I do think that there was way too much time spent on Gabe and even Vincent's character but there was some for Cat and we certainly saw who she was in Ever After. I thought that the whole purpose was that she was not going to be defined by anyone-not Vincent, not Gabe, not the relationship and not Rebecca yet she was defined by Rebecca. I liked the flashbacks but you are right they were about Cat interpreting the journal. I think it would have been good for Cat to decide right away she was going to make her own destiny. I think the time could have been better spent focussing more on the gem, Rebecca's real history with Alistar, how they met etc. I didn't really think the mythology ever came into play which disappoints me as I really was interested in that-a burning question.

Anyway, all in all I am happy where we ended off. Sounds like the showrunner did finally get in the end what the beasties want and that the small loyal fanbase, which doesn't seem to be expanding deserve to be rewarded for all we do and that VINCAT together is what sells this show, as you said. Thanks for all your work in keeping us going and supporting the show. Look forward to lots from you over the hiatus!

  11. Thanks for the review,I always like reading reviews about my favorite show.I really loved the episode last night, sad that this is the end of the season & we have so long to wait before season 3 begins.I will be watching 1st season over & over & over,& Hulu+ reruns also, hopefully season 2 DVD's will download on Netflix Oct. or Nov. Yes many B&B marathons in my future for the hiatus.
I liked how they ended the episode,no one was seperated V&C are in love & it was a sweet ending for them,JT&T are together & in love & they know it now,I couldn't see JT not being in season 3,seeing him hanging was very emotional for me,Gabe I still think they could have found him another love interest besides Catherine,Tori would have been a good match for Gabe I felt & Reynolds finally admitted to Catherine that she is the reason Vincent has not lost himself. I love watching V&C working together to solve whatever comes their way, they are stronger together than seperate & it only took 16 episodes this season for Catherine to figure that out....LOL...Gummy's rule, they have been very popular since Jay had 1 hanging out of his cute little mouth....

  12. I have a few theories about Heather's fiance.... like, he knows that she's connected to all this and he's either a really bad dude and just wants to get close to Vincent or he's a really good dude and got with her to protect her. Still trying to work that one out...

And I think those government guys at the hospital changed JT's DNA somehow when they injected him.

  13. I love your title: Those who fail history are doomed to repeat it. I disagree with you about the fight scene, Identical in choreography and performance to any other fight scene. It was even set in a bar, the oldest trope there is. And it wasn't even a real fight, it was just a trap to catch Gabe.
They destroyed the romance of Tess and J by the inane bickering that the writers seem to love. Bickering can be fun but must be done with finesse.

It was with a sigh of relief that I watched Cath finally using her brains and realize in a flash that her plan to lock Vincent up for his protection was as stupid as Rebecca's. Locking Alistair up and then leaving him there, helpless? When there is a mob around? Inadvertently causing someone's death by accident or misfortune is bad enough but causing it by your own stupidity must be harrowing.

The scene with Alistair at the stake was heart-wrenching, seeing Cath sinking gracefully down with her bosom heaving, wearing her lovely dress with her bosom heaving, not so much.

  14. Thank you for your review, you always capture something unique that provides insight.
I had trouble with the flashback timeframe. In the opening scene the text tells us it is NYC 1854. In the closing credits it says 1840. The first time we heard about Rebecca Reynolds the time was in the 1830's so by 1854, they would have been 45-50 years of age. Hardly running around performing martial arts. That by the way almost spoiled the entire scene for me. A lady in that time frame could hardly walk due to the amount of clothing she wore, let alone performing martial arts. But never mind.
They didn't burn people at the stake in 1840 or 1854 but that could have been just Catherine's imaginings. A mob would have hung him instead.
I don't care for the obsessiveness they have given Catherine these last few episodes. First she was almost maniacal in Ever After and now clinging to this diary like the holy grail. It was as if her eyes were glazed over in some sort of OCD episode.
Also, I am not quite sure why Vincent would have lost his humanity by killing Gabe. He killed Andrew Martin at the end of About Last Night and that was rewarded with a trip to the bedroom. This time, according to Reynolds and Catherine if he dared to stalk Gabe (gosh how they must have loved Gabe to be so concerned about his wellbeing) he would lose his humanity and turn into a killing monster. Never mind that since we met Vincent in episode 1.01, he has killed people in self defense of in defense of others. He never turned into a monster. Suddenly he would?
You must love the incongruity of Catherine telling him over and over that we can't kill Gabe because it would be wrong, then they do just that. I know, self defense. As many body counts as we have with both Catherine killing someone almost every week, and Vincent in the opposing episodes, they can't convince me suddenly that because it fit the plot of this episode, suddenly we turn 180 degrees. Of course, there is the out of some lame self defense motive. That being judge jury and executioner is okay as long as it is based on self defense because they went into a situation half cocked. She okayed Vincent killing Andrew Martin with a nod.
I am having trouble distinguishing that beast kill from Gabe. It made more sense after she learned that Gabe would be stronger, but not before. Honestly, half the fun of the show is Vincent beasting out, I hate to see him neutered by this constant barrage of "losing humanity" when obviously he hasn't lost it yet. Where has Catherine been for the last two seasons? She has been with him during half the killings and she has done quite a few on her own.
Worry for Season 3: The government agents cure JT who was dying from massive blood loss. Isn't that what Tori died from? And didn't we see her being whisked away in an ambulance? I am starting my letter writing campaign now. The character wasn't particularly well done - okay it was awful and I can't imagine having a shortened season with that poor characterization haunting us throughout.

    ReplyDelete
  15. OMG , are you implying they won't be honored by an Academy award ?

    ReplyDelete
  16. One of my worries of season 3 as well is the "Vincent will lose his humanity theme" again. It has sort of already been spoiled that Vincent will have to use his inner beast to fight whatever the new threat is, which will threaten to destroy their love again. Hopefully the writers will not go that route again as is getting repetitive and you are right, Vincent has always had his human side. The only time he didn't was when he was around Tori or when Muirfield turned him into the super soldier, which he overcame so if he can overcome that, then I don't think we need to worry about him losing his humanity yet again. Are you suggesting that maybe they would bring Tori back? Might as well pack the show up right now if the writers were to do that!

    ReplyDelete
  17. Tori back? I hope not, but the ability to replace massive blood loss had me worried. You know when they tell us there will be more "romance" you never know where they are going. Your are right Maureen, I don't think the writers would do that because the fans already made it clear about not only the Tori character but the portrayal also.
Vincent saved his own humanity in "Catch Me If You Can" He did it without needing Catherine, she was still "with Gabe" There is no misplaced monster. But the finale led us to believe otherwise.
"I can't kill Gabe because it's wrong" didn't stop the killing of Gabe. So either they are both monsters or they are both the beacon of righteousness.

  18. I was actually thinking last night after I watched Deja Vu again that the end dialogue between Cat and Vincent is really contradictory to the whole premise of S2. Vincent DID lose hiis humanity as you said too between 207-212
He chose his beast side. He would have killed Reynolds bit Cat shot him
And you are right V found his humanity not because Cat loved him in 215. She was in love with Gabe then, so he did.that on his own. And you are right about Cat being self righteous. That played all the way thru the season. One of the major flaws of season 3 was inconsistent writing. Lots of new writers which is fine but not if they are not being cohesive with the story. It was like each one had their own story that did not really connect to precious ones. When cans posted reactions to episodes others kept saying it is a whole season story but it wasn't in any ways. So many unanswered questions and random themes. Maybe some will be answered in S3 but hopefully there will be consistency from beginning to end.

    ReplyDelete
  19. Sorry I meant inconsistencies with season 2 not 3, hopefully that won't happen. I hope they pick a few tried and true writers: and then stick with them through the whole season.

    ReplyDelete
  20. I agree with you about the unanswered questions and random themes from S2, and I sincerely hope there will be more consistency in S3. I also believe that Vincent did manage, sometimes with great difficulty, to maintain his humanity with and without Catherine. Saving people reminded him of what he used to be - Human (not a doctor / Ep1). However, Catherine's presence gave him HOPE, that he might, someday, have a real partner, a soul-mate, with whom he could spend the rest of his life. That, I believe, is the essence of Catherine being his GEM, his guiding light, and his Home.
P.S. I do wish agent Reynolds will stay with us in S3, he seems to have warmed up to the VinCat relationship, and he can provide a much needed support for Catherine, and Vincent as well.

  21. I am. seriously suffering because the season has ended. I loved this episode. Actually, the last 8 eps. I enjoyed tremendously, some were better than others, but Vincat together again, I can forgive anything. Looking so fwd to S3, but the long wait is going to kill beasties
