2014 Character Cup - 1E
18 Jul 2014
2014 Character Cup Beauty and the Beast Cancelled Shows Chicago Fire Da Vinci’s Demons NCIS Sleepy Hollow The Big Bang Theory True DetectiveCongratulations to Hannibal Lecter, Melinda May, Daryl Dixon, and Dean Winchester for making it into round 2. Yesterday's poll were interesting because they contained the closest battle yet (Sarah Manning vs. Melinda May, with only a 13 vote difference) and the biggest blowout (Dean vs. Mary, Queen of Scots, with 999 more votes). Thanks as always for playing nice and for all the great discussion. You guys are making this contest a lot of fun. Today we start on the right hand side of the bracket and it should be another set of big blowouts with the exception of the second poll, which could be quite close. If you would like a handy list of how each character on the left hand side of the bracket did, I have modified the rankings post to include how many votes each character got and if they were defeated in the first round. You can see that here. Until next time, play nice, keep commenting, and happy voting!
Polls close - Friday around 4 pm CST
Prediction contest result - Rob F, Toni, Emma, and Famous 4 It all got 100% correct in today's polls. Janna is still in the lead with only 1 missed prediction. Way to go everyone!
TV Talk Topic - While going through the comments over the last couple of days, I've seen a lot about how people used to watch a show. What makes you drop a show? Do you make a conscious decision to drop shows or do you simply get behind and not catch up? Do you stick around with past favorites long after the characters or the plot have ceased to appeal to you? If you have been with a show for awhile do you stick it out until the end even once you've soured on it? What's the longest you've stayed with a show that you eventually dropped (not because it ended)? Does nostalgia ever draw you back to a show you have dropped? Are there any shows you've dropped that you're considering picking up again? Do you ever hate watch?
Just a reminder, the reason this competition has been so much fun so far is that everyone has been playing nice in the comments. Let's keep that up here. No attacking a fandom and no sour grapes (see rule #2 of the contest by clicking on the "play nice" link in the opening paragraph). Let's keep it all about the characters, not past contests, today. Thanks in advance for keeping this a great place to talk TV. Speaking of…
ReplyDeleteMy TV Talk Opinion - Dropping Shows
Caveat - I am talking strictly about shows that I have watched at least 8 episodes of. Not ones I watch only the pilot or 3 episodes of to check them out. I don't consider those dropped as much as never really started.
I drop shows a whole lot faster these days than I ever have in the past. A large part of that is the sheer quantity of TV shows available in all different formats which means that it is easy for me to get too far behind on a show to catch up quickly. Even the summer hiatus, which used to be where I caught up, is now jam packed with new shows. 7 new shows premiere this week alone. It's overwhelming so generally I drop shows by default. When I do consciously drop a show, it's usually because it has been sucking for awhile. If I have been watching a show for years, I usually give it 2 seasons to improve before I decide it's not for me anymore. I have had times when I have dropped a show and then years later went back to it to see how it ended, but those are very rare. I do occasionally hate watch a show, but if I do it is because I belong to a Twitter group that makes the show bearable with all their snark. The Following and Under the Dome were my first hate watch shows. This season I belonged to the Coolant Crew, who basically snarked their way through the otherwise unwatchable Dracula.
My biggest reasons for dropping shows are a stalled plot where I feel I've already been through it several times with the same characters, a lack of consistency with show canon that is so bad it sticks out, or making my favorites out of character for an extended time without justifying it well enough. If a show has an issue with all three I may drop it in one season instead of 2. (Looking at you Supernatural) It used to be that I would still stick with a show until the very bitter end (looking at you Sliders even though you became unwatchable) but after Buffy and X-Files I learned to cut my losses in order to preserve the love I originally had for the show. SPN is the longest I've loved a show and still dropped it. It was my favorite show for 7 years, but the 8th got so bad that I dreaded every episode I watched and I couldn't risk all my past enjoyment for a show runner that obviously did not care about what I loved in the show, namely the Winchesters.
My votes for today:
ReplyDelete1. None - don't watch either show
2. Ziva - For all that I like TBBT, Sheldon has had almost no character development in all these years. I think they have great potential to do so now that he's traveling by himself, but for now I prefer Ziva.
3. Ichabod Crane - Not only do I not watch True Detective, but I also adore Ichabod. He's my favorite new character and the only reason I did not nominate him is Sleepy Hollow has only aired 13 episodes. I adore how smart and loyal Ichabod is. He is a gentleman and noble to the core which is hard to do without making the character straight up boring or a caricature. Ichabod is neither. He also kicks butt and makes the most amusing observations. The best scene by far with him was when he's speaking about true love with Yolanda the On-Star-ish operator. I chuckle just thinking about it. Of all the characters on TV I am looking forward to returning this fall, Ichabod is top of the list.
4. Olivia - Olivia isn't even in my top 4 characters on Fringe but she was incredibly well developed over the course of the series. Another woman who could kick butt but also could have moments of falling apart, I like how she got blindsided with all the freaky in the pilot but didn't let disbelief stop her and continued to push through to the end. I could have done without all the cortexiphan Chosen One issues and I frankly liked Alt-Liv better, but she is still one of the better female characters I have ever watched and I am so glad they had a chance to wrap up her story.
Just Ziva.
ReplyDeleteI currently watch Under the Dome, purely because it is laughably bad.
2104 .. a future tournament ;)
ReplyDeleteNothing for today.... AGAIN!!
ReplyDeleteBut I can already tell BaTB, TBBT, Sleepy Hollow and Fringe will win.
...My time machine worked!
ReplyDeleteIchabod and Olivia :)
ReplyDeleteSeveride, Ziva, Crane, and Dunham.......but I know that BATB will destroy Severide
ReplyDeleteTime jumps...they're not just for TV anymore.
ReplyDeleteThat's why I watched it last season. This season I simply don't have time. They kept killing off my favorite characters and keeping Junior so it's just not as much fun anymore either.
ReplyDeleteOnly Dunham and Rust today.
ReplyDeleteI think the second poll will be a whole lot closer than people think. While TBBT is by far the biggest network scripted show, it tends to do poorly on SpoilerTV. Of course the news about contract negotiations might bring more TBBT fans to the contest than usual though.
ReplyDeleteSince Severide was tied for last place in the contest before the ranking polls, she really did not have a chance no matter who she was up against in the first round. There's always next year as more people learn about and watch Chicago Fire.
ReplyDeleteJust Ichabod Crane and Olivia Dunham for me.
ReplyDeleteSeveride is a he :)
ReplyDeleteVincent (I like Severide too but Vincent all the way), Sheldon, Crane and Olivia.
ReplyDeletemy Aunty Allison
ReplyDeleterecently got a nice 6
month old Jaguar by working from a macbook.this website Cashfig.COM
Severide is a he
ReplyDeleteAnd NCIS is still on the air lol
ReplyDeleteKelly, Ichabod, and Olivia. I like Vincent but he's so going to win without my vote once the BATB fans find this.
ReplyDeleteKelly is a dude.
ReplyDeleteI think NCIS will be on the air until TV is obsolete and then it will be on our palms. :-)
ReplyDeleteThanks. I've never seen the show before. Is he the hot guy who was on House? That's literally the only thing I know about Chicago Fire except that it has a spin-off and I watched 2 episodes of that.
ReplyDeleteNo that's Casey.
ReplyDeleteThanks. I looked Taylor Kinney up on IMDb but I don't think I've seen anything he's been in. Maybe a guest spot on Rizzoli & Isles
ReplyDeleteNo Jesse Spencer's character is called Mathew Casey, Severide is Taylor Kinney.
ReplyDeleteI watch Da Vinci's Demons, but Leonardo isn't my favorite, so nothing for me.
ReplyDelete1- I don't watch these 2 shows.
ReplyDelete2- Ziva David, NCIS is the show I watch since I am a kid.
3- I don't watch these 2 shows.
4- Leo Da Vinci !
Just Rust Cohle and Olivia Dunham for me today...
ReplyDeleteI've had a falling out with some procedural shows. I used to watch then I guess got bored with NCIS and CSI. I also didn't like how the CSI team kept losing actors. I never really got deeply invested in the shows, though I had a few episodes I really liked with Toni and Nick.
ReplyDeleteI had a falling out with Burn Notice too, though I never did watch it regularly, even when I was watching season 1. I only got back to it when the final season was announced, wanted to see how it ended and so I had a marathon of the episodes from the first 6 seasons before watching season 7 weekly. I really loved that show for the brief time I got to fall back in love with it. Loved season 6 best, though at times the weekly business was missed - even marathoning sometimes the running all the time weighed a lot.
Other than that, I haven't dropped any shows. Supernatural and The Vampire Diaries are two shows that have really disappointed me the last couple years but I stick with it because I want to see the ending and hoping beyond hope it gets better. I've invested too much time and emotion in the characters to stop watching now.
I may have to drop a few of my casual viewing shows in the fall - like Reign. It depends on how much time I have, not because I'm disappointed or anything. I've just not been as interested in the show as others and if it comes down to needing to cut shows for the sake of less time consumption, it'll be the first to go.
Severide/Kinney was Tyler's werewolf relative on The Vampire Diaries in season 2. Guessing you never made it that far.
ReplyDeleteTwo votes again for me :)
ReplyDelete1) N/A (I don't watch either show)
2) Sheldon Cooper, The Big Bang Theory (By default)
3) Ichabod Crane, Sleepy Hollow (By default)
4) N/A (I don't watch either show)
Today's TV Topic I don't why but I always love hearing about what shows people have dropped and why. I didn't actually start watching other shows until Stargate was cancelled in 2011. After 14 years and 17 seasons of the show it was a pretty big hole to fill so I started a lot of other shows! I could always tell if I would like a show or not at first and it never occurred to me for a second that I could tire of a show I loved.
I've never dropped a show simply because I didn't have time for it. I think the first show I ever dropped was The Walking Dead after season 3. Then Falling Skies after season 3. Then Revolution at the start of season 2 and New Girl at the start of season 3. Then a long list of others that I dropped all around the same time, Arrow,Supernatural,The Vampire Daires, Reign and The Originals I dropped about half way through each of their last seasons. I also dropped Star-Crossed and The Tomorrow People before they were cancelled but only because I knew they were going to be cancelled. Most recently I dropped Resurrection after season 1 Defiance at the start of season 2 and True Blood at the start of season 7 (I just couldn't stick it to the end it was too bad imo).
I wouldn't say TVD, SPN or New Girl are the ones I stuck with the longest before dropping because I binge-watched those last summer before starting them. So that would make TWD and Falling Skies the ones I stuck with the longest. I think I dropped most shows not because the quality declined (but some did imo), but because I started so many other shows that were such higher quality it just set the bar higher for me :P
1) None - don't watch either of them.
ReplyDelete2) Sheldon Cooper - Easy choice , although he isn't my favorite on TBBT which may shock some people (favorite is Howard) he is such a funny character that never fails to make me laugh + Plus i don't watch NCIS.
3) Ichabod - Sleepy Hollow was one of the only new shows i kept watching this year , and he was the main reason why. His character was very well written and played brilliantly by Tom Mison.
4) Olivia Dunham - She was a strong individual character , who grew as the seasons went on physically and emotionally.
I voted for Vincent Keller, Sheldon Cooper, and Rust Cohle. The only one of these shows that I still want to watch is True Detective, but I've seen enough of both Beauty and the Beast and The Big Bang Theory to know that Vincent and Sheldon are very likable characters.
ReplyDeleteNo problems today.
ReplyDelete1. Severide (don't watch BatB)
2. Ziva (quite a character!)
3. Ichabod (still haven't watched TD, plus Ichabod is such a great character, one of new favorites)
4. Olivia! (don't watch Da Vinci and I love Olivia, even though she wouldn't be my pick from Fringe, always had a soft spot for Bishop boys)
I don't normally like to drop shows but some shows become so unbearable to watch that i simply have to drop them. I dont like dropping shows at all , but if i dont get that excitment about wanting to watch the next episode after the previous one just finished then i find that im wasting my time with the show. You could say it could maybe the show was having a bad episode and it could get better the next week , but for most of my shows i cant wait to watch another episode (example POI).
ReplyDeleteThe main reason for dropping a show is like what you said Dahne the plot , i feel with some shows that i decided to drop have taken a huge step forward creatively then the next season taken two steps backwards. They revisit things i have already seen done before with the characters or the show itself which makes it very boring and feels like im re watching an episode instead of watching a new one.
The longest running show i have dropped would probably be Stargate SG1, i loved the show completely it was my favorite show to watch , but after they got rid of General Hammond and replaced O neil with Mitchel i just lost interest in the show. I also didn't like that new woman character vala i felt her presence was annoying and thought her whole character was poorly written. I also thought that the storylines they were doing i had already seen before and the fact that they seem to drag on the whole Goa'uld race as the enemy for years was ridiculous. I also found the direction they took laughable with the whole "Merlin" and the "hidden treasure" rubbish it wasn't the stargate i first loved.
Other shows i have dropped have been: Under The Dome - Dropped this season due to the terrible story line and laughable episodes (because they were that bad). I mean the premiere was enough to put anyone off the whole two deaths were so badly executed it felt like i was watching a bad movie or something.
Mistresses , Dominion and Vikings i have also dropped.
You seem to drop a lot of shows , what shows do you currently watch?
ReplyDeleteVincent keller beauty and the beast .j'adore
ReplyDeleteI drop a lot because I watch a lot :P Get ready for a long list! Currently im watching The 100, American Horror Story, Atlantis, Awkward, The Big Bang Theory, Continuum(hopefully this is renewed!), Cougar Town, Dominion, Extant, Faking It, Finding Carter, From Dusk Till Dawn, H+, Helix, The Last Ship, The Leftovers, Looking, Agents of SH.I.E.L.D., Once Upon A Time, Penny Dreadful, Pretty Little Liars, Sherlock, Sleepy Hollow, South Park, The Strain, Teen Wolf & Under the Dome.
ReplyDeleteThere are some there i'll probably drop soon too.
1. Severide - This was easy. I don't watch BatB.
ReplyDelete2. Sheldon - The only reason I went him and not Ziva is because he's still current. She's not.
and BATB is now running away with it.......I guess all their fans just show up vote and leave......unless all those non chicago fire fans vote for severide to make it close
ReplyDeleteJust Sheldon Cooper(I like Ziva as well,so I'll be happy no matter what) and Ichabod Crane for me today.
ReplyDeleteDropping shows is an interesting topic and I had to think about it a little.I don't drop too many shows, but that's because I don't watch too many to begin with.I mean, right now,I have 5 shows that I watch regularly and I'm pretty happy with them so far.
From past experience though, usually I just lose interest,I get behind and I just don't bother to catch up.The thing is,I can stick with a show if I have issues with the plot,as long as I like some of the characters.I rarely drop a show just because of the plot. The only example that comes in mind is Lost. But even then,it wasn't so much the plot I had a problem with.I just didn't like the approach of creating more and more questions without answering some first.
I do make a conscious decision to drop a show if I have issues with the characters.I can deal with a plot I don't like, but as soon as I stop liking and being invested in the characters,I'm done.Like it happened with The Vampire Diaries. It got to a point where not only I didn't like,I couldn't stand the majority of the characters.I think this was the only time I just stopped watching a show,no second thoughts,no nothing.
Usually though,I just don't have time.If I'm not crazy about a show,I don't watch it regularly and I try to catch up during the summer.
Another straight forward day for me! Vincent Keller, Sheldon Cooper and Ichabod Crane. Don't watch any of the other shows. I like the Sheldon character though over the seasons I have grown to dislike that his quirks are always the joke. I understand that the other characters want to open him up to new ways of looking at things but they don't always try and understand his POV. Ichabod is hilarious as most time travellers are and he kicks ass and continues to save the world from the apocalypse. Vincent is another favourite, put into a situation he didn’t want and trying to make the
ReplyDeletebest of it without hurting others… unless you make him angry.
I've found that procedurals are easier for me to drop if it's a time issue but I drop serialized shows more often for plot and character issues. I never really thoght about that until thinking of shows I've dropped for today's topic. I had a hard time dropping Supernatural because it was the show I had spent the most time, effort, and money on by far. It felt like going through withdrawal and not watching when the first episode of season 9 premiered just felt wrong. Now I am good with the decision but it wasn't easy. Some TV shows become like family in that you know the characters so well and get involved with their lives. It's also tremendously hard because when you step away from the show in a large way you step away from the fandom too, which means people you've bonded with become liek strangers sometimes.
ReplyDeleteI'm glad you tried Burn Notice again. I adore that show even if I only watched the first season sporatically before I got hooked. Once I marathoned season 1 there was no going back. It did get slow for me in the middle but I thought they did a great job with the last few seasons and I'm glad it ended as it did. I think I will be excising a lot of shows from my weekly viewing next season as well. There are not enough hours in the day and I actually have to go to my paying job.
Stargate SG-1 is one of those shows that I watched the entire way through but regretted. I should have stopped the second the Oni came on because the show had gone downhill by that time for me. In that time of my life, I tried to see every show I watched to its end, but even if I hadn't, I still would have watched it because that was our family show. We watched together and discussed it. Some shows have that extra connection that make it harder to drop.
ReplyDeleteFor me if a plot gets repetitive it's a sign the show should bow out gracefully. but since that rarely happens I cancel it myself. One sure sign for me is when they replace characters like with Jack on Stargate. That's going to be part of the TV talk discussion in 2 days so I hope we can discuss it more then.
Cohle and Dunham
ReplyDeleteI haven’t dropped too many shows, mostly it was because I
ReplyDeletedidn’t have enough time to watch them all. I’ve seen about 2 seasons of HIMYM on
DVD but the fact that I know the ending and there are just soo many episodes
makes it kind of overwhelming and I wasn’t enjoying it too much. It was
horrible TV anyway but stopped keeping up with 90210 after many seasons, might
watch the final season though I already watched the final episode. I stopped
CSI NY on its last season (but finished the series after it was done) and CSI
Vegas (not enough time and lost interest with all the character changes). I have
paused New Girl and 2 Broke Girls because of time again but do plan to catch up
at some point. Thinking of dropping Mystery Girls but it’s a 22 minute summer comedy
and I’m only watching like 5 shows this summer anyway, if it comes back during
the winter I probably won’t watch it. I’m looking forward to Girl Meets World
and saw the pilot but will probably drop the show because it’s hard to get into
kid shows (though I am enjoying Liv & Maddie but that’s because I like when
the same actress plays more than one character).
I have the three aired episodes recorded and not sure if I want to watch it yet. I like Eddie Cahill and see that he will be on from previews but I hate Junior and Big Jim a lot.
ReplyDeleteTime is my biggest foe for keeping up with TV as well. I think knowing the end, especially if many fans did not care for how things ended, is a big factor in whether I resume a series or not. I also agree that anything with a whole lot of episodes ends up going farther down on my list. It's hard to think about beginning a series that has over 100 episodes, or even 50 these days.
ReplyDeleteUgh! Those two needed to die in season 1. I would have much prefered if Maxine had lived and became the new Big Bad to be honest.
ReplyDeleteI'm actually not very involved in the Supernatural fandom anymore. Most of my old friends quit the show or stopped going to the website I talked to them on. It's pretty much only Spoiler TV, and I don't talk SPN here as much as I used to because I'm not checking all the spoilers like I used to. BTW the less spoilers I read for a show, it usually means the less interest I have. I went from hunting for every spoiler possible on several websites, to only reading Spoiler TV to not reading BTS and casting articles anymore. I only pay attention to the "big" spoilers.
ReplyDeleteI'm on Twitter now, but still don't do much with SPN, even though I follow some of the actors. It's mostly Dominion.
Dominion's my new Supernatural. I hunt down the spoilers and joined Twitter mainly cause I wanted to help support the show and get occasional questions answered and possibly spoilers missed on other websites.
