2014 Character Cup - Final Four
29 Jul 2014
2014 Character Cup Beauty and the Beast Castle Supernatural The MentalistPlease Read: So far this has been one of my favorite internet contests I have ever run. It's been a joy listening to people's opinions on TV in general and how TV has inspired them. However this is the part of the contest where, in my experience as a contest creator and participant of far too many polls to count, things often get rough. As things head to a close, people tend to forget that this is a completely unimportant little contest that is meant to do nothing more than pass hellatus and get people talking about why they love TV. There is nothing at all worth getting riled up about here. So it feels like a great place to remind people of the rules.
The Rules Re-Posted: The goal of this contest is for us to pass the hiatus time with great TV talk and loads of fun. Alas in every internet contest ever, there are always things that come up and ruin the fun for everyone. In an attempt to shoot for the stars and miraculously avoid these, here are the rules:
1. The Aliens Haven't Landed. There's No Conspiracy Here - I have no hidden agenda. Everything is placed in brackets based on number of nominations and ranking polls. If your favorite show goes against a giant, it's nothing personal. There's also no secret underground of people cheating polls. Nobody gets paid for that so nobody has time for that. Especially since this contest means absolute squat. It's just for fun.
2. Leave Sour Grapes on the Vine - Yeah, it sucks when your favorite gets kicked off by a show you hate. Yep, the winning character will come from the most organized fandom that works the hardest to get the word out. Them's the facts of life and internet, folks. It doesn't mean we can't have fun. So discuss why you love your favorite instead of vetching about life's unfairness and bringing down the room. I promise we'll all have more fun that way.
3. It's Not 2048 and My Name's Not Dorian - I will do my very best to keep the contest running smoothly and let you know the approximate time each poll ends. However, I occasionally do silly things like put the wrong date on a poll so it doesn't end the exact time I thought. Again see #1. Let me know and I'll fix it. I apologize in advance for any technical difficulties.
4. Comments are the Wellspring of Hiatus Life - Most of us anxiously await a favorite show's return and if you're like me, right about now is when I start feeling the wait the most. Why not distract yourself with a little TV talk? So explain your voting choices. What is your favorite thing about a character? Your favorite character arc? What are your hopes for him or her? The conversation is endless as long as someone starts it.
****Now that business is done, we now return you to your previously scheduled contest. :-)
Congratulations to Patrick Jane (53%), Dean Winchester (53%), Vincent Keller (by 21 votes), and Kate Beckett (59%) for proceeding to this round in the overall tightest races of the contest. Only Beckett had a clear lead throughout as the others remained too close to call much of the way. What an exciting race for all characters! Thanks to everyone who passed the word and voted. Today as you comment please remember that the goals of the contest are to have fun through hellatus, to get people to try your favorite shows, and to start some great TV discussion. In that nature, please tell us why the characters you voted for are so amazing instead of sour grapes about the previous poll. I appreciate you keeping things light and fun. Until next time, happy commenting and voting!
Previous contest results - Final rankings for all characters out in the third round now up. Rankings for round 4 will come shortly. Final rankings have been moved to the top. Inital rankings below
Polls end - Tuesday around 5:00 pm CST
Prediction contest results - Janna, Dahne, Sharon Seymour, and It Depends on What Fails all had 100% correct. Janna remains in the lead with 11 misses. Great job!
TV Talk Topic - To be honest, I have pulled a Kira (Teen Wolf reference sorry) and hemmed and hawed about whether to go ahead and do this topic or change it. In the end I decided I really wanted to know, so please stick with talking about why you love a character and please do not put other characters down. Stay positive! Since today is the Final Four of our contest, today's topic is who would you have in your own Top 4...with a little twist of course. We're going to narrow it down. Who would you put in your top 4 of classic TV, as in characters who started out in black and white because there was no color TV at that time? Who would you pick during the post-color but still in the 20th century time period? How about the millennial age? Better yet, who are your top 4 characters of (fill in a genre of TV)? Please remember to keep it positive and NOT a discourse on the current competitors of the actual contest. Thanks! Can't wait to hear your picks.
Please remember to play nice today in the comments and talk up your favorite characters. Maybe it will inspire someone to check out your favorite shows. Thanks!
ReplyDeleteTV Topic - Final Four
1. Classic TV - I was not around when TV was black and white, but there were a lot of reruns when I was a kid. So my choices are: Lucy Ricardo, Cathy Lane, Alice Kramden, and Dr. Richard Kimble. I can't remember if Gidget was black and white at first or not or else she would be on the list. Honorable mentions - Catwoman, Wally Cleaver, Rod Sterling (who I debated on whether to call a character or not), Lily Munster, and Samantha Stephens. I'm sure I missed a bunch, but these are the ones that popped into my head.
2. The 70's - Laura Ingalls, Greg Brady, Kelly Garrett, and Janet Wood. Honorable mentions - Shirley Feeney, Dr. Johnny Fever, Florida Evans, Wonder Woman, BJ Hunnicut, Alice Hyatt, Julie Cooper, and everyone Carol Burnett played on her show
3. The 80's (my generation) - Mike Seaver (my first TV love), Jo Polniaczek, Cliff Huxtable, and Deanna Troi. Honorable mentions - Tom Hanson, Hannibal Smith, Sam Malone, Alex P. Keaton, MacGyver, Sam and Tony Micelli, Winnie Cooper, Remington Steele, KITT, and a whole lot more.
4. The 90's - Willow Rosenberg (pre-witch), Pacey Witter, Quinn Mallory, and Dana Scully. Honorable mentions - Al Calavicci, Dylan McKay, Niles Frasier, Carlton Banks, Topanga Lawrence, Murphy Brown, Dr. Quinn, Michael Samuelle, and more.
5. The 2000's - Dean Winchester, Michael Guerin, Veronica Mars, and Parker. Honorable mentions - Lily Rush, Daniel Jackson, Eliot Spencer, Alec Hardison, Angel, Aeryn Sun, Don Eppes, the 10th Doctor, Abby Sciuto, Adrian Monk, Lex Luthor, CJ Cregg, and more.
6. Current - Fiona Glenanne, Walter Bishop, Mozzie, and Stiles. Honorable mentions - Peter Bishop, Claudia Donovan, Paul Briggs, Ichabod Crane, and a whole lot more but I am running out of time.
Sci/Fi: Dean Winchester, Aeryn Sun, Buffy Summers, Walter Bishop, Stiles, and Dana Scully (not sure which would be the 4)
Crime Dramas - Abby Sciuto, Lily Rush, Hetty Lange, and Don Eppes
My Votes:
ReplyDelete1. Dean - I will vote for Dean over any other character in the contest because seasons 1-3 Dean is my favorite character of all.
2. Beckett - I liked her well enough the first few seasons and I don't watch BatB
Jane and Beckett
ReplyDeleteJane and Beckett for the win!
ReplyDeleteI just voted for Patrick Jane.
ReplyDeleteI'm out. My four favourite current characters: Raymond Reddington, Harold Finch, Tony Dinozzo, John Reese.
ReplyDeleteFrom this millenium (I'm not old enough to have any before that) (and I'm not including any of the current ones, not that they'd make this list in favour of anyone on it anyway): 10th Doctor, Jack Bauer, Tony Almeida (seasons 1-5; as far as I'm concerned season 7 Tony didn't exist) and Ben Linus. Honourable mention to Walter White and Sawyer.
Dean and Beckett. I can't wait to see the winner of this competition!
ReplyDeleteJust Dean for me now. I love your reminder that it's an unimportant conest though haha. Thanks for running this! I've enjoyed it.
ReplyDeleteI'm still waiting to hear who your final 4 would be in a variety of categories. I know you have them.
ReplyDeleteI'm not sure that characters I consider current would bump off my overall favorites either. I have to live through a character's experiences for awhile before they can bump any major character from my list.
ReplyDeleteThanks! The whole fun of any internet contest is for people not to take the results seriously but to talk seriously about TV.
ReplyDeleteOoh, I like today's question. Tough one to choose from, though.
ReplyDeleteLet's see...for classic TV, well, I'm basing things totally off of reruns here, as I wasn't around in the early TV era, but...Samantha Stevens ("Bewitched" did later go to color episodes, but they started in black and white, and Samantha was just so cool), Henry Bemis (I love "The Twilight Zone", it's one of my favorite series, and who can forget poor Bemis and his longing to have enough time to read?), a tie between Rob and Laura Petrie from "Dick Van Dyke" (one of the best sitcom couples ever), and...I dunno, Mister Ed, LOL. I used to love that show when I was little :D. Who doesn't like a talking horse?
Color/20th century: Niles Crane (one of the funniest characters to ever grace TV-David Hyde Pierce played him brilliantly), Chuck Noblet (so messed up. And yet so hilarious. Fun to see Stephen Colbert playing someone so crazy), Lydia Deetz (from the "Beetlejuice" cartoon-I adored her and wanted to travel to all the places she did and dress like her and all that stuff), and Helga Pataki (tough yet vulnerable, and I loved her interaction, warped as it was sometimes, with her beloved "football-head", Arnold).
Millenial choices: Britta Perry (I relate way too well to her), Spencer Reid (he is adorable. And sweet. And ridiculously smart. The perfect combination in a man), Michael Scott (despite being iffy at the best of times as a boss, he was still an entertaining, and in some moments, very caring, person), and a three-way tie between Ichabod Crane/Abbie and Jenny Mills (can't think of a better group of people to fight the apocalypse!).
Doh, and now I'm kicking myself for not mentioning anyone from "The Munsters". And I wondered whether or not to include Rod Serling, too-if he can be included, then yeah, he'd be on my list, too, no question. He was awesome.
ReplyDeleteYep. Especially not when considering how awesome the ones I picked are (for me anyway, probably not for you). Tbh I think even if Blacklist/POI were to last 7, 8 seasons, only Finch may have a chance of overtaking any of those four I picked for this millenium (hell, NCIS has been going 11 years and DiNozzo isn't anywhere near that millenium list).
ReplyDeleteAh Numb3rs, another show that I miss terribly. I've always loved brother stories and Charlie and Don Eppes are some of my favorite brothers ever, along with Sam and Dean of course, but I also liked Michael and Max on Roswell (they were kind of brothers), and Peter and Nathan on Heroes.
ReplyDeleteI really miss Numb3rs. I have it all on iTunes but I still sit down and watch it on Ion if I catch it. The Eppes brothers made my day. I too am a sucker for brother stories and I completely think of Max and Michael as brothers. In fact, I was kind of disappointed that when we learned of their ties on their own planet, they weren't in fact brothers.
ReplyDeleteThe Munsters and the original Batman with all the "pow bam" were shows my babysitter let us watch before going out to play again. Some fond memories of both.
ReplyDeleteAny show that started in black and white counted for me too. It is such a treat to remember watching reruns of these shows. In some way I love how simple many of them were. They are my grilled cheese shows. The Petries and the Reeds and the Beavers make me laugh and hit a spot that is sometimes missing with today's TV.
ReplyDeleteNiles Crane was a total joy. I didn't watch Frasier when it aired although I did watch Cheers. It was in reruns again that I learned how delightful a character he was. Spencer Reid is growing on me as well although I am brand new to Criminal Minds. Possibly the smartest character on TV. I totally agree with the Sleepy Hollow crew as well. They make a great team and I am more and more excited for the premiere every day. Thank you Comic-Con for whetting my appetite even more.
All my characters are out , but gave my votes to Beckett and Dean just because i have watched some episodes of each show when there has been nothing else on.
ReplyDeleteTV Topic:
I have put in brackets the actor/actress for some characters that people might not recognize.
90s: Dr Mark Sloan (Dick Van Dyke) , Jessica Fletcher (Angela Lansbury) , Dana Scully , Colonel Jack O'neil
Honorable Mentions: Willow , Xena , Hercules (Kevin Sorbo) , Buffy Summers and Lorne
The 2000s: Hoban 'Wash' Washburne , Phoebe Buffay , Hal , and Monk
Honorable Mentions: , Jack Carter , Lex Luthor , Captain Dylan Hunt (Kevin Sorbo) , Lord John Roxton (The Lost World) and David Scott (Dinotopia)
Current: Harold Finch , Tyrion Lannister , Mr Gold/Rumpelstiltskin and Walter Bishop
Honorable Mention: Frankie Heck , Howard Wolowitz , Michonne , Sherlock (Elementary) , Regina Mills , Ben Linus and Hiro Nakamura.
I can imagine! Sounds fun-your babysitter was a smart person.
ReplyDeleteI certainly remember watching a lot of "Munsters" on Nick at Nite with my mom when I was a kid. That block of programming, along with the Nickelodeon cartoons during the day, MTV, and Disney were pretty much the only things our TV ever seemed to be tuned to, I think, LOL.
I can't give you anything definitive because I'd always be changing my mind but I'll give it a go:
ReplyDeleteClassic 4: Batman (Adam West), Joe Friday, Aunt Bee, Laurie Petrie
Honorable Mentions - Jack Benny, Bob Hope, Carol Burnett
70's 4: Hawkeye Pierce, Fred Sanford, Maude, Ms. Piggy
Honorable Mention - Jim Rockford
80's 4: Cliff Huxtable, B.A. Baracus, anyone from Golden Girls or Designing Women
Honorable Mention - Everyone on Night Court
90's 4: Homer Simpson, Cosmo Kramer, Elaine Benes, Buffy
Honorable Mentions - Mulder, Scully, Lennie Briscoe, the expansive cast of ER
2k 4: Jack Bauer, Greg House, Debra Morgan, Lucille Bluth
Honorable Mentions - Tony Soprano, Dexter Morgan, everyone on Farscape
Exactly! Somebody in the programming department clearly knew what they were doing. Shame more channels don't do things like that nowadays.
ReplyDeleteThanks for coming to discuss with us even if you are no longer thrilled with voting choices. I can't believe I forgot Lorne. He's one of those characters that slowly grew on me from Angel. If only he could have prevented Angel from singing though. :-) I was a fan of Jessica Fletcher myself, although I would have fled Cabot Cove after that many murders. I'm blanking on Hal though. What TV show is he/she/it from?
ReplyDeleteAgreed. Infomercials might pay the bills but give me Andy Griffith anytime.
ReplyDeleteFavorite characters... Well I've just finished reading a Stargate SG-1 book, so the first one that comes to mind is obviously Daniel Jackson because of his incredible knowledge, his courage and his open-mindedness.
ReplyDeleteThen in no particular order there is Methos on Highlander who is the coolest, most laid-back 5000-year-old guy that I know. Sylar on Heroes who was so twisted and evil even when he tried to be good. Charlie Eppes on Numb3rs who made me wish I actually understood maths. Lorelai Gilmore from Gilmore Girls who is the coolest chick even in the most ridiculous situations and who didn't just have good quips, she had a hell of a backbone.
And also Brian Kinney from Queer as Folk US, Shane from The L Word, Arthur from Kaamelott (French TV series which is extraordinarily good), Merlin in Merlin (eh), Ronon Dex on Stargate Atlantis, Spike on Buffy, Lindsey McDonald on Angel, Burt Chance on Raising Hope.
I'll stop my list there but it's really not finished.
Oh I loved Murder She Wrote, Jessica Fletcher was like a modern Miss Marple.
ReplyDeleteI always love a good discussion. Hal is from Malcolm in the Middle played by Bryan Cranston. I never understood in Murder She Wrote how they could have so many murders in one place and still have a sizable population in that area. They just kept on introducing new people and im like where is everyone coming from ,because it wasn't that big of a place.
ReplyDeleteIts a great show , I still watch occasional episodes when they air now.
ReplyDeleteI was thinking Hal from Quantum Leap...
ReplyDeleteBut yeah, Malcolm in the Middle! I love this show, this family is so completely crazy, they make me think of the Chances in Raising Hope.
Yeah, 10th Doctor was great. Tony was my favourite character in the first five seasons. Then season 7 absolutely killed his character, attempted to revive it, then just as it was about to come around, the show put 5 bullets in his head (metaphorically, not literally - despite the ruination of Tony in S7 I think I might have quit the show in a rage had they done that).
ReplyDeleteYep, Abby's awesome too. That's the thing I like about NCIS: they find a way to have a reasonable amount of time with character development as well as solving the case.
Me too!
ReplyDeleteThe 10th doctor was 100% the best one. He had great companions and probably the best episodes of doctor who with all the different species and story lines.
ReplyDeleteI know but I still think they considered themselves brothers and I certainly do.
ReplyDeleteI bought the box set of Numb3rs a couple years ago and it sits in pride of place among my books on a shelf, I was actually thinking of watching it again a few days ago. I love the little scenes at the end of almost every episode when the brothers and their dad usually find themselves at the house and talk, it's almost always my favorite scene of the whole episode.
They were very crazy especially the mother. It was one of my favorite comedies and probably still is , i just love a good comedy about a family its probably the best kind of comedy (in my opinion)
ReplyDeleteonly Patrick Jane for this round<3
ReplyDeleteHa! There have been so many excellent TV characters in the last 75-ish years that it is hard to create a complete list. Daniel Jackson is one of my favorites too and one of the first scifi characters I thought of when creating my list. I was crushed when he left but ecstatic when he came back. Methos was definitely a one of a kind character and he used his years so well. He was one of the most sympathetic characters on TV. Lorelai was also a lot of fun, especially in the early years of Gilmore Girls. Burt Chance always made me roll with laughter. I never thought I would liek Raising Hope but then I saw a clip and I was laughing so hard I couldn't breathe. I immediately watched all of the episodes that had aired by that time.
ReplyDeleteI remember how excited I got when a packet about teaching math using Numb3rs came across my desk. Sadly it was for high school so it was too old for my kids. Still I thought that was a brilliant plan. Only Charlie Eppes can make game theory sound fascinating to me.
Have to say that I am interested in seeing the French Camelot although my French is way beyond rusty.
Alan Eppes was one of my favorite TV dads, which was funny because usually when I think of dads on TV I think of kids or teens. He was always there for his sons, even though they were so different and he had to relate to them slightly different as well.
ReplyDeleteRight now in France, every afternoon is Malcolm in the Middle reruns, they show 6 or 7 episodes, it's amazing.
ReplyDeleteThe more I think about it the more I see similarities with Raising Hope, both families were poor, both mothers wore uniforms for their work - Virginia Chance was a house cleaner - both had a kid that was really not that bright - the episode where Jimmy tries to pass his SATs is hilarious and very revealing - and both mothers loved their husbands passionately to the point of horrifying their children.
Dean and Kate for me.
ReplyDeleteMan, being a SPN veteran really wears you out in terms of online voting. Too many have been done. Now there is nothing left to proof or promote. As a typical veteran I want to lay back and enjoy whatever left, and I'll be happy with it.
Dean is going to be forever my favorite TV character, and even if he lost this round I am happy he got so far.
Kate is one of my favorite strong, kick-ass woman on screen. Hope she gets to the finale.
TV Topic:
ReplyDeleteOh this is going to be tough.
Black and White time characters: The only show I've watched in black and white wasn't black and white it's whole run. That's Gilligan's Island. My top 4 from that show were The Skipper, Gilligan, the Professor, and Mary Ann.
Shows before my time in color: Happy Days - Fonzie, and I currently can't think of any others.
90's (my generation): Roseanne, Frasier, Jesse (Full House), and Cory, Shawn, Topanga, Mr. Feeny (Boy Meets World), Buffy, Angel, and Spike (Buffy/Angel). To choose who goes in what order I wouldn't know. I liked some Lost World characters too, but can't think of their names. Too long ago.
20's: Dean (Supernatural), Castiel (Supernatural), Chris (Charmed) and Melinda (Ghost Whisperer). Other Charmed: Leo, Piper, Wyatt, and Phoebe. Other Supernatural: Sam and Bobby. Other Ghost Whisperer: Jim! Loved Jim. Also, I love Stefan, Alaric, Lexi, and Rose (Vampire Diaries), Junior (Wildfire), and Kyle, Tom Foss, and Adam (Kyle XY).
2010-2014 - This gets really complicated because I really got into shows in the last 4 years. From this long show list I love Michael (Dominion), Reese (Person of Interest), Monroe (Grimm), and Ty (Heartland, Canadian series) the most right now.
Other (no real order to it):
Dominion - Alex, Becca, Uriel
Heartland - Amy, Grandpa Jack
Person of Interest - Finch, Fusco, Zoe
Agents of Shield - May and Coulson
OUAT - Charming, Snow, Graham (there are so many though)
Arrow - Oliver, Diggle, Roy, Sara (most of the time)
Grimm - Nick, Rosalee, Hank
The Originals - Elijah and Rebekah, Klaus on his good days
Sleepy Hollow - Ichabod
Sherlock - Watson and somehow Sherlock, even if he's a jerk
The Walking Dead - Rick and Daryl
Beauty and the Beast - Vincent, JT and Tess
Nashville - Deacon
Melissa and Joey - In title
Chicago Fire - Kelly and Casey
Gone shows:
Nikita - Nikita, Michael, Alex, Birkhoff, and Sean
Almost Human - John and Dorian
Revolution - Miles and Monroe
Being Human - Aidan, Josh, Sally, and Nora
Warehouse 13 - The whole team
The Tomorrow People - John, Stephen, and Astrid
I'm always changing my mind as well. I know someone is going to mention someone that I am going to facepalm on because I can't believe I forgot them. In fact, I will do it now. How could I have forgotten Dorothy Zbornak from Golden Girls? I also had Night Court on my list but couldn't narrow it down. I adored the classic Batman series. In fact those were the years of Underoos and my mom got all of us Batman ones - my brother, me, and the babysitter's kids. Looking back it is embarrassing but oh so fun back then.
ReplyDeleteI think that is a large part of NCIS's success. There is the procedural element that is comforting but people still really love the characters. They don't get the kind of focus serialized characters get every episode, btu when they do it's usually very powerful.
ReplyDeleteYou could make tee-shirts with Burt quotes, they would be hilarious like:
ReplyDelete"You know I can't think on demand" or
"Noses are the unsung heroes of the face, ties the whole thing together." or
"I'm not that bright, I'm not that smart and I don't have a lot of intelligence."
I remember reading an article a long time ago about an initiative to use Numb3rs to teach maths, I think it was at university level, I looked into it but since I don't even understand maths in French...
The series is Kaamelott, it's the best French TV series ever (though keeping in mind that French TV series are generally pretty awful, that's why French television is colonized by American TV series). It was created by an incredible theater actor called Alexandre Astier, who plays Arthur and who also writes the series, directs it, edits it, produces it and writes the score. He also put his parents who are also theater actors to play Guinevere's parents and his brother (also an actor) to play his brother-in-law. It is absolutely hilarious because the main idea is that Arthur is on a mission to find the Grail but success is very far away because all his knights are terribly stupid. And he's constantly getting interrupted by the fact that he has to run his kingdom, he has to fight wars, settle peace treaties, stop the peasants from revolting, produce an heir (though he can't stand Guinevere so it's kinda difficult) etc.
There are 6 seasons which are called "Books" and I know that at least the last 3 have English subtitles which are very well done (I read them once). The first seasons were very different, because at first the "episodes" are only a few minutes long but they grow bigger and bigger. It's only in season 5 that the episodes are 50 minutes.
I was at best ambivalent about Doctor Who before Tennant. I liked Eccleston but I wasn't clamoring to rewatch the episodes. For me Tennant is Doctor Who, but i know there is a lot of opinion on that one and in all fairness I haven't seen all the older doctors. I tried several times to get through the first ones but have never successfully made it all the way through.
ReplyDeleteHe's undoubtedly responsible for why his sons are so balanced even though they have such stressful lives. He never really got angry, he was always a port in the storm.
ReplyDeleteAgreed. I love the ones that focus on the characters, particularly Tony ones. He always has this comedic outer shell so it's great to see inside of that.
ReplyDeleteI'm still so sad that Almost Human is on the RIP shows list... I miss good sci-fi.
ReplyDeleteThanks so much and right back at you. And yes, I am about to go fix myself a grilled cheese sandwich. :-) Looking back on everyone's lists, it is fascinating to me how things have changed over the years. I think my nostalgia for classic family comedies is what made me love shows like Enlisted and The Goldbergs so much last season. While completely different in tone, they still had the heart that comedies back then knew were essential.
ReplyDeleteI swear these great discussions are making me want to watch all kinds of shows now. I'm getting the urge to catch a few episodes of CHeers followed by Frasier as well as see if I can find the black and white classics anywhere. There has been some great TV over the decades.
Dean! My second favourite character of all time after Spike from Buffy/Angel
ReplyDeleteMalcolm in the Middle - of course. You know I didn't realize until at the beginning of this contest that they never had a last name. That fascinates me.
ReplyDeleteI remember watching Murder She Wrote with my grandma and she said that she really liked Jessica Fletcher but she would never be friends with her or go anywhere she was on vacation. Death was too high a price for friendship. It cracked me up and was oh so true.
TV Topic-
ReplyDeleteClassic TV - Wow this is going to take awhile... Please forgive me but i am horrible with names so i'll go by show alone: Alfred Hitchcock Presents, The Andy Griffith Show, The Beverley Hillbilly's, The Ed Sullivan Show, Bonanza, Star Trek, yes.the original. There are so many more but...
70's - Mod Squad, Gun Smoke, Ironside, H5-0, Medical Center, Rowan and Martin's Laugh In, Here's Lucy, hey,i remembered her name! The Carol Bernett Show with Tim Conway and her other sidekick.See what i mean about names, ugh! Kodjak, Mash, Alan Alda, Starsky & Hutch, again more than i can list.
80's: Spencder For Hire, MacGyuver, Airwolf, Magnum P.I. who could forget Tom Selleck! Night Court, Hunter, Star Trek Next Gen, Max Headroom, Hill Street Blues, Quantum Leap, Miami Vice, Cagney & Lacey, Moonlighting, Amazing Stories, Cheers, Tour Of Duty, China Beach. Remington Steele, & more..
90's: Deep Space Nine, Picket Fences, Profiler, Frasier, Third Watch, Jag, Nash Bridges, Earth Final Conflict, Homicide Life On the Streets, LA Law, NYPD Blue great cop show! L&O, Mad About You, Sliders, The Pretender, Babylon5, Twin Peaks, X-Files, Northern Exposure,if you haven't seen this run and watch! Stargate SG1..I'm sure i missed some.
2000's: Grey's, Castle, White Collar, Burn Notice, Eureka, WH13, Heroes, Prison Break, Firefly, The Wire, The Spoano's, NYPD Blue, Home & Away, Crossing Jordan, My Name is Earl, Friday Night Lights, Star trek Enterprise, Oz, Jericho, Boston Legal, Bones, 24, Awake, House, TGW, CSI, Survivor, The West Wing, Battlestar Galactica, MI5, Flashpoint, Early Edition, Santuary, Stargate SG1, Stargate Atlantis and Universe, Fringe and LOST! ...I'm sure there is more..i'll spare you. :)
I would trade all the raunchy comedies on TV right now, even the big ones, for a good family comedy. I was sad that last year most of my favorite family comedies got axed. At least I still have The Goldbergs.
ReplyDeleteI never really thought of them being similar, but I agree. The Chances were just so good to each other as well for the most part. You always knew that they cared and were trying to do the best for each other.
ReplyDeleteI didn't realize they were still airing. I'll have to check it out.
ReplyDeleteNothing embarrassing about it. My Batman pajamas even had the detachable cape. As for Night Court, to this day it's still one of my all-time favorite sitcoms so I had to find some way to include it. :)
ReplyDeleteAlmost Human was my favorite when it aired. It hurt when it got cancelled. Gone way too soon.
ReplyDeleteYou're welcome, and aw, thanks to you, too! Ah, lucky! But hey, I had a fish sandwich earlier, so still good.
ReplyDeleteFully agreed on what everyone's lists reveal here about the changes in television over the years. I can see a lot of changes in my list alone. I've not seen "Enlisted" or "The Goldbergs", but now you have me curious about them (granted, it seems I'd have to go somewhere where episodes of "Enlisted" were available online at this time, but still...all the talk about it has me curious). I'm glad to know there's still comedies that take notice of that. That's a reason I like "Community"-underneath all the meta and pop culture jokes and wacky pillow forts and paintball fights, there's heart and good cast/character chemistry, which is something I'm big on in the shows I watch.
Same here! Want to throw on some MeTV for a while and check out some older shows (I've been really getting into shows like "Alfred Hitchcock Presents" and "Thriller" on that network lately. We need more cool anthology series like those). I hope you get a chance to kick back and watch some good television!
It probably is but it wasn't announced yet.
ReplyDeleteJane and Vincent, looks like the final 2 will be Dean and Vincent. That should be interesting :D
ReplyDeleteI don't understand advanced math in any language either. So Kaamelott is a comic version of the Arthur story? That's fascinating. I have never heard of shows being only a few minutes though nor of one man doing so much of theTV show. Intriguing. I looked for it at Netflix and Prime, but no luck. I'll have to see if I can find it elsewhere.
ReplyDeleteThere is a vast difference between being a SPN fan then and being one now, I agree. Back then there was almost a frantic vibe to it as a way to ensure that people knew about the show. Now that it is one of the more successful shows on the CW it's a lot more casual.
ReplyDeleteI was a huge fan of Gilligan's Island back when it had repeats in the afternoon in summers. I swear I am never going to get that theme song out of my head. :-) I was surprised at how much I ended up liking Boy Meets World because I was definitely not in the targeted demo when it aired. Shawn and Topanga were my favorites but I had a big soft spot for Mr. Feeney too. I laughed when you put (most of the time) by Sarah and the other commentary. It's sometimes hard for me to love a character when the writers are going in a different direction than I am.
ReplyDeleteI had very few drama disappointments in last year's cancellations, but Almost Human stung.
ReplyDeleteGot it. That's what I had heard as well. Thought I missed something.
ReplyDeleteStill too early to tell. After how close everything ended up last time, I'm hesitant to even wager a guess right now.
ReplyDeleteVery true. I still enjoy voting here and there but there is no "we must win because everyone kicks my favorite show and we have to prove they are so wrong". That stage is over. SPN is one of the oldest shows on network and despite people still go on with kicking and bashing business it doesn't matter anymore. I am personally in peace. lol
ReplyDeleteI wish more people would take note of that before getting so dismissive of procedurals. I totally get why that sort of programming isn't everyone's thing. That's fine. Nothing wrong with that. And I won't argue that there's a ridiculous amount of them on TV (and the spin-offs, and spin-offs of those spin-offs, and so on). And yes. They're predictable.
ReplyDeleteBut most fans of those sorts of shows already KNOW that they're predictable. That's not news. It's just that they don't care. For whatever reason, they like these shows-they enjoy the characters, or find an actor hot, or like the simplicity and routine of the program, or whatever. And this idea that some people have that anyone who watches an "NCIS" or a "CSI" or "Criminal Minds" is an "old fogey" and/or wouldn't, or couldn't, possibly be interested in more "sophisticated, intelligent" programming is ludicrous, too-and blatantly untrue (and even if the vast majority of the viewing audience was older folks...that's bad...why? Do they not deserve to be catered to as viewers? I've never understood that line of thinking).
Bottom line, everyone's got their reasons for why they watch the shows they do, and they're entitled to like what they like. Others are free to disagree and dislike things, but this snobby attitude about television that some people have is just plain irritating. At the end of the day, if it's entertaining viewers, that's all that really matters-that's kind of the point of entertainment programming.
Vincent Keller all the way.
ReplyDeleteI voted for Dean and Beckett.
ReplyDeleteI know I have a lot more than four but I just couldn’t narrow it down. Thinking about my favorite characters since I can remember watching as well as reruns I've seen I'd go with Rod Serling. Carol Burnet, Dr McCoy, Rocky (Rocky & Bullwinkle show), Bob Newhart (original show), the entire cast of Soap, Radar O’Riley, Jim Rockford, Murphy Brown, Buffy, Fox Mulder, the entire cast of China Beach, Veronica Mars, Brian Kienny, Daniel Jackson, the 10th Dr. Who, John Crichton, Walter Bishop, James (Sawyer) Ford, Hugo (Hurley) Reyes, Tyrion Lannister, Boyd Crowder (Justified), Frank Underwood (House of Cards), Sherlock and Watson (Sherlock Holmes BBC), and since I could keep going on forever my three favorite characters of all time Bobby Singer, Sam Winchester, and Dean Winchester.
So I had just finished writing all this on my phone when it randomly decided to restart...anyway i'm done voting but good luck to everyone :)
ReplyDeleteToday's TV Topic: I was born in 95 and the oldest show ive watched (obviously years after it aired) was Star Trek: Voyager. I actually didn't watch anything other than Stargate until it was cancelled in 2011 so anything I've seen that aired before that I binge-watched.
90;s: Top 4 - Jack O' Niell (Stargate SG-1), Piper (Charmed), The Doctor (Star Trek: Voyager), Seven (Star Trek: Voyager).
I know 2 of those are from the same show but those 3 shows are the only shows I've watched that aired in the 90's (other than Family Guy & South Park).
Honourable Mentions - Samantha Carter (Stargate SG-1), Phoebe (Charmed) & Captain Janeway (Star Trek: Voyager).
00's: Top 4 - Nicholas Rush (Stargate Universe), Lee Adama (Battlestar Galactica), Six (Battlestar Galactica), Dean Winchester (Supernatural).
Another 2 from the same show but oh well :P
Honourable Mentions - River Tam (Firefly), Shawn Farrell (The 4400), The Vampire Diaries: Stefan, Caroline & Matt, Battlestar Galactica: Karl Agathon, Galen Tyrol & Samuel Anders.
10's: This is when the amount of shows I watched increased by a (possibly disturbingly) massive amount from 2011 onwards so this is really difficult :P
Top 4 - Vanessa Ives (Penny Dreadful), Scott McCall (Teen Wolf), Bellamy Blake (The 100), Mr. Gold/Rumplestiltskin (Once Upon A Time).
Honourable Mentions
The 100: Abby, Clarke, Kane, Jaha.
Almost Human: John & Dorian
Arrow: Oliver & Felicity
Continuum: Kiera, Alec, Betty, Sonya, Kellog, Travis, Garza, Kagame, Brad.
Dominion: Alex, Claire, David, General Reisen, Ethan, Uriel, Gabriel.
Helix: Hitaki, Sergio & Daniel.
The Last Ship: Captain Chandler, Rachel Scott, Mike Slattery, Danny Green.
The Leftovers: Kevin Garvey, Scott Frost & Adam Frost.
Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D: Grant Ward, Melinda May, Fitz, Simmons.
Once Upon A Time: Regina, Charming/David, Cora, Sheriff/Huntsman, Red/Ruby, Pan, Zelena, Belle.
Once Upon A Time in Wonderland: The Knave/Will, Anastasia/Red Queen, Jafar, Jaberwocky.
The Originals: Klaus, Rebekah & Genevieve.
Penny Dreadful: Malcolm, Chandler, Dr. Frankenstein, Dorian.
The Secret Circle: Adam
Sleepy Hollow: Ichabod
Teen Wolf: Lydia, Aiden, Ethan, Derek, Kira
Under the Dome: Barbie
And I thought yesterdays post was mega long...
Very true. You cannot have raised two great sons without having done something right yourself.
ReplyDeleteI'm so used to calling them by their first names i too didn't realize they never had a last name until the series finished.
ReplyDeleteFunny enough when i was typing up the characters from the 2000s i actually had to search on IMDB for Hals last name as i completely forgot they never got given one. Very strange.
I bet you were the envy of all sleepovers with your cape. Night Court was one of those shows the whole family watched together so it holds a special place in my heart. My brother loved acting like Bull. It was also my first introduction to Mel Torme.
ReplyDeleteI loved meeting Tony's dad. It explained a lot for me.
ReplyDeleteI would too! If you don't watch it already you should really give The Middle a go , its really underrated in my opinion. The middle is a really good family comedy with similarities to Malcolm In The Middle (1 nerdy child , them being poor, crazy ass mum , 1 child who thinks he is a bigshot).
ReplyDeleteThey normally air repeats all the time (at least one ep a day gets shown) on Alibi here in the UK. We still get all the old shows Xena , Farscape , Stargate , Buffy etc.
ReplyDeleteAw, good call on the "Boy Meets World" cast and Roseanne (still the most relatable show on TV for me, that one).
ReplyDeleteAnd Fonzie! God, of course, how can you have a discussion about notable TV characters and not include Fonzie?
I love how you can get a sense of everyone's age ranges with the lists they make here, and which decade(s) are most represented. Granted, now I'm feeling a wee bit old, but still... :D.
ReplyDeleteThere are a lot of TV stereotypes, some based in truth but definitely not the whole truth. Procedurals do tend to attract older viewers but I would guess that the average NCIS lover who comes online to talk about it is not much older than the majority of other shows. I have found that the best way to deal with what I considered a faulty perception is to spend time talking about all teh good stuff about my shows. When I first started at SpoilerTV, I spent most of my time defending Supernatural from people who constantly said that it was a teen girl show that people only liked for the half naked hot guys. Since the cast of SPN can probably still be counted on 2 hands the amount of times they have been shirtless in 10 seasons, I knew that if I countered the most blatantly wrong info out there and talked up the best things about the show, I could get others to at least try it and let the show take care of the rest. Sure enough as more and more SPN fans came to the site and also took up the mantle of defending the show in a positive and informative but still passionate manner, we started getting people to try it. They didn't all like it but they did agree that the preconceived notions about it were wrong and that's all we were looking for.
ReplyDeleteI think people who are tired of hearing their favorite procedurals put down should talk about those times that are poignant and moving and exciting more. I think there should be more discussion of the long-term arcs as well, since that is the serialized element. In fact, I'd love to hear people talk about what they like best from both sides of the coin. Fact is most people watch and like both so there is a wealth of conversation waiting to be had. I think we just discovered next year's first TV Talk Topic. Thanks!
Teen Wolf starts in 10 minutes so that is my TV for the night. Last week I won at Teen Wolf Bingo so I have bragging right right now. :-) Oh and I just got finished with my grilled cheese - yum!
ReplyDeleteI would strongly recommend The Goldbergs, Enlisted, and Surviving Jack, although this last one is a bit brusque. I also liked Trophy Wife for a beautiful look at how blended families can be there for each other and Growing Up Fisher, while a bit less funny had some great heart moments about a family there for each other even while going through divorce. Comedies rocked this year for me because they got that laughs need to be balanced by heart.
I've dreaded this part of the voting, so know I get to feel what others have been talking about, although it is really tuff to have Beckett and Vincent, head to head, I'm still Beastie had to give the vote to Vincent, this is a wild final four, I like Kate as well so here we go!!
ReplyDeleteThis is true. That old saying about stereotypes having a kernel of truth and whatnot.
ReplyDeleteYeah, I mean, I do know some older people who watch those kinds of shows, but I also know quite a few people in my age range (I'm 29) who enjoy them, too. I love your idea of talking up shows that people tend to often dismiss so quickly. I've only seen bits and pieces of "Supernatural", but yeah, the fans do a very good job of making those of us who've not seen the show/aren't as familiar with it realize that there's so much more to it than what people would assume given the channel it airs on and everything. I think it's cool that fans banded together so much to defend their favorite show-and from what I've seen of the "Supernatural" fanbase, they are a VERY passionate bunch, so it probably didn't take much prodding to get them to rave about the series! Good to hear you were able to change some minds in the process, too.
I'm all for that sort of a discussion in regards to procedurals. I would love to hear from other people about that stuff, 'cause there have been some good story arcs and character moments and such-I can think of quite a few from the show I watch right off the top of my head. If that can be turned into a "Talk Topic", wonderful-you're welcome, and thank you for running with the idea! I look forward to that topic.
Ah, fun! Congrats on winning the bingo for the show, too-enjoy your program!
ReplyDeleteCool, I'll make note of those and check them out, then (I also saw mention of "The Middle" in here, that's one I've been meaning to watch, too. I've heard, like, nothing but good things about it). I like that there are shows addressing the blended family/divorce issues in a realistic yet mature and hopeful way, too. It's a part of many people's lives nowadays, so it's good that they have shows out there that address that and which they can relate to.
Ah, "Thriller", it was an old horror anthology that was on in the early 1960s. Boris Karloff hosted it, and it featured creepy stories each week (there was one I saw last night that was based on an Edgar Allen Poe story in which a man who was thought dead turned out to have been buried alive and escaped. Needless to say, chaos ensued :)). If you have Me TV, they show episodes of that series on Sunday nights as well as weeknights (though unfortunately during the week it's on quite late at night). And if you can't stay up to watch the show/don't have that channel, there are episodes on YouTube if you want to check them out. It's a good, spooky little series, and Karloff is the perfect choice to narrate such a program.
Only dean for me today.
ReplyDeleteCan't really pick any favourite black and white characters because I was too young to ever see any. Sure I've watched some reruns in my time but never enough to get a favourite character out of it
The Middle was actually a nominated show for Last Week in TV so I have seen one episode. I liked it. I just haven't had time to see anything else.
ReplyDeleteHa! I really thought my voting days were done as I didn't expect Dean or Beckett to make it this far!
ReplyDeleteToday's Topic: I like this one...let's see, where to start, where to start....since I'm not sure what year each of these started, I'm going to break them down by age range relative to when I watched them: childhood/teens and adulthood. I was born in 1976 so some of these shows were ones I watched via reruns on Nick at Night or I didn't start watching until a later season. All picks are from shows that have ended their runs except for Scooby because I still watch Scooby Doo and were not included int he original 64 of the competition....
Top four from Childhood/Teens:
1. Scooby Doo
2. Sam Malone
3. Grandpa Munster (dude had an awesome car)
4. (tie) Gilligan and Luke Duke
**Honorable Mentions: Cringer/Battle Cat, McGuyver and Mr. T
Top Four from Adulthood
1. (tie) Daniel Jackson, Jack O'Neill and Samantha Carter
4. Captain Jean Luc Picard
**Honorable Mentions: Seven of Nine, Dr Rodney McKay, Dr Carson Beckett, and Veronica Mars
Top Four from Adulthood - Including characters in the competition
1. Ziva David
2. Samantha Carter
3. The Doctor
4. Dean Winchester
Just sit right back and hear a tale, a tale of a fateful ship.....
ReplyDeleteI just got that out of my head from the Best Vehicle poll!
Dean and Kate
ReplyDeleteMe too. I feel like The Minnow is haunting me right now.
ReplyDeleteWe aren't going to be able to use it until next year's Character Cup because Best Show doesn't do that, but I am excited to have a topic for next time already.
ReplyDeleteHmm,. Thriller sounds like fun. I don't have Me TV but I will look for it. Thanks. I liked the one episode of The Middle that I saw. I just haven't had time to pick up the rest of the series.
ReplyDeleteI was looking up something with TV shows and they called them Malcom's parents. I thought that was weird so went to IMDb and then did internet search to find out. I bet there is a good interview about why they never gave them a last name somewhere out there.
ReplyDeleteLucky that sounds like our Ion but those are usually crime dramas instead of sci fi. I love it but I'd still really like to have Farscape repeats somewhere too. Loved that show.
ReplyDeleteI still haven't seen Human Target but it is on my to-watch list. I've heard good things about it.
ReplyDeleteTotally understand about names. I cheated and used IMDb to get last names because there was no way I was going to remember those. I used to love Bonanza too, which is really odd because I hate westerns. Something about the characters I guess. Can't believe I forgot about Spenser For Hire or Moonlighting. Hawk was one cool cat and I watched Moonlighting with my parents. I wholeheartedly endorse your Northern Exposure suggestion. That show was for lack of a better word, charming. As for Flashpoint, I am currently catching up with it on Ion, my new go to channel for comfort TV.
ReplyDeleteAbsolutely list as many favorites as you wish. I had to cheat and put down Honorable Mentions or it would have taken me forever to pick people. I adored Soap as a kid and I remember that was teh first show I ever watched that had a gay character. It's amazing how many people from teh show went on to star in other things I loved as well. I don't recognize Brian Kienny. Which show was he from? The Winchesters and Bobby Singer are 3 of my favorites of all time too.
ReplyDeletePoor Jane, doesn't stand a chance against Dean (though I voted for him). I was actually surprised by how well Kate did votes-wise last round (she didn't need to against Chandler). I still think Vincent's going to win but she's going to put up a serious fight. Then we'll have Dean vs. Vincent in the finals which is what I guessed after the first round (based on number of votes).
ReplyDeleteIt's funny, I didn't know half these shows even existed before coming here. 90% of the shows I like and follow are on cable, so I don't really stand a chance in these things and yet I'm into these little competitions. Heh.
1. Patrick - I see that Dean is clearly in the lead for this though...
ReplyDelete2. Beckett - She's narrowly in front and I hope she stays that way so I have someone to vote for in the finale, ha!
So sorry to here you got sunk by the vanishing post too. Technology seems to be after all of us these days.
ReplyDeleteSamantha Carter is an honorable mention for me too. Loved her. I am so going to miss Daniel on Helix. I really, really wish they hadn't killed him off. He was my favorite. Slattery from Last Ship is growing on me a lot. I like his snark, while May Fitz, and Simmons make my day on SHIELD. I hope they get more screen time this season.
I'm feeling a little old myself, but it's more from looking at the Young Hollywood Award list. I don't even know who half those people are.
ReplyDeleteI am going to miss Crazy Ones and Growing Up Fisher too. I loved the dynamic between Simon and Sydney (plus giving me a show with SMG I could actually watch) and I adored how even though they were getting divorced Mel and Joyce were still there for each other and their kids. That scene where they took their rings off together was beautiful.
ReplyDeleteFair enough. So what are your top 4 from other decades then?
ReplyDeleteI had a hard time determining what decade some shows were from too, especially those that straddled decades. In the end I went with when i watched them like you. I totally cannot believe that you prefered Luke Duke as well. I was always the odd one out because everyone prefered Bo. And yes, Grandpa Munster had quite the sweet ride. I debated back and forth between Deanna and Picard for ST:NG. To me, they were both awesome.
ReplyDeleteAbsolutely anyone but Dean.
ReplyDeleteNo votes for me today.
ReplyDeleteFavorite characters from when I grew up. Hmmm...I didn´t really watch TV back then, BUT I was obsessed with Twin Peaks, so I´ll have to say my favorite character would be Special Agent Dale Cooper. And Bob kept me up at night, god, I found him sooo scary.
Then LOST appeared 10 years ago, and I have watched a lot of TV since then. My favorite 4 characters would be Ben Linus (LOST), John Locke (LOST), Tyrion Lannister (GoT) and Boyd Crowder (Justified). Two of them made it into the competition, so I´m happy with that. It was very exciting to see Tyrion do so well, hopefully he has a chance next year.
Really hope Beckett goes all the way.
ReplyDeleteTop 4 Fav Tv Characters:
1- Sheldon Cooper- The Big Bang Theory
2- Jack Bauer- 24
3- T Bag- Prison Break
4- Richard Castle- Castle
Honourable mentions: Dexter Morgan(Dexter), Sherlock Holmes(Sherlock), Dr House (House), Willow Rosenberg(Buffy), Caroline Julian(Bones) and Walter White (Breaking Bad)
Nothing for me today, sorry.
ReplyDeleteeghads! Favorite Characters o…f all time. This is going to be a long list. In general, if they stick out in my memory with some significance I’ll list it here. I can guarantee there are a lot I’m forgetting. (I'm going to borrow your categories because they've ignited my memory)
ReplyDelete1) Classic TV - Grandpa (The Real McCoys) I remember his limp and have a vague memory of his voice. Very odd character to be on my list but he’s the first character I remember from TV.} Eddie Haskell (Leave it to Beaver) I think he inspired me to "manage" my parents, Julia (Julia) One of the first African American female characters on TV, Jeannie, Major Nelson, and Major Healey (I Dream of Jeannie), Alice (The Brady Bunch), Alexander Scott (I Spy) Another landmark African American Character (not a maid, hooker, pimp or junkie) and a really really cool spy show! Lurch (that voice!), Uncle Fester, The Thing (The Addams Family), Herman, Granpa (The Munsters), Dick Van Dyke (The Dick Van Dyke Show) Endora (Bewitched) Mannix
2) The 70s - Kolchak (Kolchak: The Night Stalker) loved this show, Tattoo (Fantasy Island) I still say “The Plane! The Plane”, Cannon, Kojak, Columbo, Starsky, Barreta, Ironside (All these detectives had fun, memorable, personalities. Venus Flytrap, Les Nesman, Johnny Fever (WKRP in Cincinnati) these guys were all unique and very specific and really funny. Venus Flytrap one of the first African American characters I can remember that, while celebrating his cultural differences wasn’t being antagonistic. I didn’t realize what that meant to me until…well when I started typing this. :-) It’s very much a part of how I am with my dearest friends., Jamie Summers (The Bionic Woman), Klinger(MASH), James Evans (Good Times), Mark Harris (Man From Atlantis) Not sure I can count him since this turned out to be mostly TV movies - and most of them horrible, Twiggy (Buck Roger in the 21st Century) and I'll go with you on Wonder Woman, Alice Hyatt (Alice), Julie Cooper (One Day at a Time.)
Oooo, just spotted several other shows I was addicted to - Escape from Atlantis, Six Million Dollar Man
3) The 80s - Lots of TV to love but off the top of my head stand out characters would have to be... Cliff Huxtable (The Cosby Show), Hannibal Smith(A-Team) I still love it when plan comes together. :-), and Remington Steele, Bill Maxwell, Roger Hinkley (Greatest American Hero)
4) The 90s - Dr. Quinn Medicine Woman, Murphy Brown - Lots of favorite shows but few characters jumping out at me, at this moment, Max, Alec, Joshua (Dark Angel)
5) The 00s - Bobby Singer(Supernatural), Stiles (Teen Wolf), John Reese, Shaw (Person of Interest), Buffy Summers, Walter Bishop (Fringe), River, Jane(Firefly)
One morning about 3:30 am I discovered a network (I think it was HBO) had added, what appeared to be programming for parents rocking their infants to bed. Colors. Mellowness. and Classical Music. If I hadn't been standing I would have gone to sleep.
ReplyDeleteI came to Numbers really late in the game because I thought the premise was stupid. Loved that show. And Yes! Heroes. Most of the characters on that show were standouts for me.
ReplyDeleteWhoops. I don't think I understood the directions.....I'll update tomorrow.
ReplyDeleteI may have spelled his last name wrong but Brian Kenny (Sp?) is from Queer as Folks (American version). He is one of those characters that is a total jerk 90% of time unless you are attacking one of his friends and then he was 100% loyal.
ReplyDeleteI know Ward is in this season too but If that new guy is in it more than Ward i'll have a hard time watching it, I don't like the new guy and he's a regular now :/
ReplyDeleteI was looking at some lists that had shows from before the 90's and I'd never even heard of them so I felt a bit lost lol :P
ReplyDeleteSu
ReplyDeleteDid you still watch Andy Griffith, after Don Knox left?
ReplyDeleteI voted for Jane and Beckett today so I'm pretty sure they're going to loose. Sorry guys! :)
ReplyDeleteI threw Dean a vote. But to be honest, all of my favorites, are out of this race. Good luck to everyone else.
ReplyDeleteHa! I never even heard of that. I bet that helped some adults sleep too, a little white noise. I can't imagine paying for it though.
ReplyDeleteUh oh, if Eddie Haskell was you behavior guide, you must have been a handful for your parents. :-) I was close to putting Alice and Endora down on my lsit as well. I loved all the characters on WKRP, even Herb surprisingly, mostly because it always remembered it was a comedy but it wasn't afraid to give characters some great moments too. The only thing I really remember about Fantasy Island is the white suit and Tattoo's signature saying. I'm not sure I ever saw Man from Atlantis or Escape from Atlantis in any form.
ReplyDeleteI still say, "I love it when a plan comes together," any time a Teen Wolf plan actually works. It doesn't happen often but it makes me laugh when it does. Can't believe I forgot Greatest American Hero. Dark Angel almost made my list as well, but only Alec and season 1 Logan would be on it.
I loved your list. No need to update.
ReplyDeleteThanks. I never saw that show.
ReplyDeleteI haven't read any spoilers for SHIELD yet. Do you mean Tripp, who came on with Garrett last season midway through? I like him so I'm fine with that, but then again I want them to make Ward a villain anyway.
ReplyDeleteStill too much time to tell, but there is a chance that the two I thought would be in the finals will both be out this round - Jane and Vincent. They had by far the most nominations in that those two together almost had more than everyone else on the list put together.
ReplyDeleteI totally forgot about Twin Peaks. That show had everyone talking. I am surprised that Raylan didn't get enough votes to be in the competition. He is one I really expected to be there. I expect that Game of Thrones will go far next year, although who represents them is anyone's guess. It had more characters nominated that any other show.
ReplyDeleteIt would be cool to have a female character win the whole thing. That didn't happen the first 2 times we did the contest. Nice to see Caroline getting some love here.
ReplyDeleteNo problem. So what are favorite characters from different decades?
ReplyDeleteNot sure who you were asking this of, so I'm going to answer anyway. :-P I never watched Andy Griffith on a regular basis. Just reruns when it came on so it didn't matter to me if Don Knox was in it or not.
ReplyDeleteYeah, I´m a little surpriced that Raylan didn´t make it aswell, but I´m guessing that some people nominated Boyd aswell. at least I hope so. Boyd is just as great a character as Raylan and together they are magic. :-)
ReplyDeleteI´m hoping GoT will do well. It is very difficult to only pick one character from that show, you favorite can change after a few episodes.
I just looked it up and it looks liek Raylan got 3 votes but Boyd did not get any. I am beginning to think I need to campaign at the nomination stage instead of the polls. :-) Game of Thrones had a whopping 14 characters nominated. I understand how favorites change quickly in large ensemble casts.
ReplyDeleteMy Favorite Four:
ReplyDeleteClassic: The Joker
(Batman), Dr. Zachary Smith (Lost In
Space), Clark Kent (The Adventures of
Superman), and Sergeant O'Rourke (F-Troop).
Honorable Mentions go to Batgirl, Elly May
Clampett, and Granny (The Beverly Hillbillies)
The
70s: Starbuck (Battlestar Galactica TOS),
Jim Rockford (The Rockford Files), Archie Bunker
(All In The Family), and Kris Munroe (Charlie's Angels).
Honorable Mention goes to Fred Sanford (Sanford and Son).
The 80s: JR Ewing (Dallas), Thomas Magnum (Magnum PI), Al Bundy (Married With Children), and BA Baracus (The A-Team).
Honorable Mention goes to Kelly Bundy (MWC).
The 90s: Duncan MacLeod (Highlander), Londo Mollari (Babylon 5), Buffy (Buffy the Vampire Slayer), and Professor Maximillian Arturo (Sliders).
Honorable Mentions go to Michael Garibaldi (B5) and Gabrielle (Xena the Warrior Princess).
The 00s: John Locke (Lost), Tony Soprano (The Sopranos), Jack Bauer (24), and Lucas Boyd (Point Pleasant).
Honorable Mentions go to Shepard Book (Firefly), Cameron (Terminator: TSCC), and Admiral Adama (Battlestar Galactica).
The 10s to Current: Tyrion Lannister (Game of Thrones), Shane Walsh (The Walking Dead), Icabod Crane (Sleepy Hollow), and Root (Person of Interest).
Honorable Mentions go to Daryl Dixon (TWD), Ned Stark (GoT), Arya Stark (GoT), Abbie Mills (SH), Kira Cameron (Continuum), Dorian (Almost Human), and Bo Adams (Believe).
The Joker on the early Batman series was one of my favorite villains. To this day when someone mentions the Joker that's always who I picture first instead of Heath Ledger's version. I never saw Lost in Space, only the goofy movie, so I am going to add it to my to-watch list. Kris Munroe was a great character too. Duncan MacLeod will always be a favorite to me, especially because I was fascinated by the flashbacks. If they insist on doing remakes all over the place, i think Highlander would be a great place to start.
ReplyDeleteArturo was one of my favorite characters as well. Sliders went downhill rapidly when he left. That will always be one of the biggest TV mistakes in my opinion. I kept hoping they would run into one of his doubles and take him along again. I never heard of Point Pleasant. What was that about?
Yes, Dahne that question was directed for you just hit the darn post to quickly, I asked about Don Knox, it was Andy's show but Knox made it for me, once he left so did the laughs they tried to revamp the show several times it never could catch on without Don Knox, that made me ask did you catch it as a regular viewer
ReplyDeleteSorry. I subscribe to all the contest threads so I get an e-mail whenever anyone posts here and if I can I try to respond right away before my e-mail box gets too full. I actually was less into Knox so his absence doesn't hurt my viewing as much. To be honest though, I watched Andy Griffith mostly when I was visiting my grandma so I haven't seen nearly all of it.
ReplyDeleteI'm very surprised in a very good way that Dean and Kate are winning.
ReplyDeleteMe too since Jane and Vincent came into the contest as heavy favorites.
ReplyDeleteHeath Ledger made the movie. But Cesar Romero made the series great. Lost in Space the tv series is pretty cheesy, with bad special effects and stories. But as a little kid, i loved it. Dr. Smith's "sayings" are legendary, you can even google them.
ReplyDeleteMost boys' favorite was Farrah Fawcett, mine was always Cheryl Ladd. I watched it for "the plot", honestly :P They are rebooting Highlander, as a movie trilogy, starting with Connor MacLeod.
Point Pleasant created by Marti Noxon (a Co-Producer on Buffy). Aired 8 episodes in the USA on FOX, before being pulled. It had a cult following in Sweden, which aired 11 eps. Episodes 12 & 13 were added to the dvd. Ep 13 was shot just for the dvd, to give the fans closure.
A girl Christina, washes up on a New Jersey beach. It turns out (unknown at 1st to her) she's the daughter of the Devil, the Antichrist. Christina (Elisabeth Harnois- CSI) wants to be good, but has evil inside her. Boyd (Grant Snow) was the main demon, in charge of pushing Christina towards the dark side. Boyd is one of my top 5 favorite villains from tv and movies.
The first 4 eps have teen drama heavily in it. But then the writers, dropped most of the soapy parts, and it got a lot better.
Topic of the day, let's see... I don't think I have 4 favorites from different decades, though.
ReplyDelete70s: Livia from "I Claudius". What a glorious character (and actress!)
80s: Basil from "Fawlty Towers".
90s: Michael from "La Femme Nikita". Man, he was awesome. (never watched the "Nikita" version, though).
90s-00s: Keller from "OZ", one of my favorite shows of all time.
90s: Elaine from Seinfeld (the whole bunch really), my biggest TV addiction to date. How come there're no mention of Seinfeld anywhere in these polls?
I'm not ashamed to admit I had a big crush on Michael from La Femme Nikita back in the day. He was awesome. I am kind of surprised that Seinfeld hasn't been mentioned before too. Probably because we mostly have been talking dramas. I am one of the few I know that actually did not like Seinfeld, but with such a big show it is weird that people haven't lauded the characters before now.
ReplyDeleteHow could you not have a crush on Michael with his mad fighting skills and those hot little whispers? ;)
ReplyDeleteI thought since there were some comedies on there it was only natural for Seinfeld to be right up there too. Very surprising indeed. I'd put Curb with it too, rather than some of the others.
I'll have to check out what Dr. Smith says then. My favorite angels were Jaclyn Smith and Kate Jackson, who I actually loved even more on Scarecrow and Mrs. King. I watched Charlie's Angels for the wonder of watching women kick butt on TV without being superheroes. I think that was a first for me. I didn't realize they were rebooting the Highlander movies. That's actually kind of disappointing to me because I never liked them. I actually avoided the show for awhile because of it until I happened to catch a rerun and got hooked right away.
ReplyDeleteAfter Arturo died, the show basically became a parody of whatever bad movie just came out. I liked Sole Survivor after I came to grips that Arturo was really gone. Surprisingly I remember liking the Stoker one too even though vampires are not my thing, After the Kro-Maggs were introduced, I didn't like anything. And yet I stuck with it.
I can't find Point Pleasant on Netflix or Amazon Prime but I will keep an eye out for it. Thanks for the info,
Ha! He was a fine specimen of action hero. Smart too, which I always like. Surprisingly Seinfeld didn't get any nominations. I guess it's a case of out of sight, out of mind.
ReplyDelete14 Wauw!! So many good characters to choose from. Now I have to ask, did anybody nominate Lord Varys ? He is one of my favorites along with Jaime and Tyrion, but I figured he wasn´t getting any other nominations. No reason to waste my nominations. :-)
ReplyDeleteNo Lord Varys, but I did have a nomination for a Lord Baleish. Others were Jaime, John Snow, Tyrion, Oberyn, Hodor, Stannis, Arya (who got the second most votes), Daenerys, Cersei, Margery, Brienne, Khaleesi, and Olenna.
ReplyDeleteWoman superheroes, doh! How could i forget Linda Carter in Wonder Woman (shakes head), must now edit (shakes head again).
ReplyDelete"The Killing Fields" was the only one of two Kromag episode i liked, after the Prof died. They were looking for Wade. "Just Say No" was a fun episode, and the one with Bruce Willis (had the Kromags) ended all hope.
I loved the first Highlander movie, and "Endgame" with Connor and Duncan. But the other 3 don't exist in my universe. I own PP on dvd, but sites like Darewall have it.
Khaleesi and Daenerys is the same, so I hope that she didn´t get more votes than Tyrion then.
ReplyDeleteWonder Woman was one of my idols when I was a kid. Invisible Plane? Oh yeah. I tended to like the strong Wade episodes best in Sliders even though she wasn't my favorite character. I'll have to watch The Killing Fields again because I don't remember that one. To be honest, my seasons 1 and 2 DVD are almost worn out and my season 3 get a lot of use. I don't even have DVDs for the following seasons. Also, thanks for the Darewall site. I haven't heard of it before so I will check it out.
ReplyDeleteYeah, unfortunately Justified is one of the most underrated show, if you compare the quality to the acknowledgement.. I don't count the last season its best, but as @thedane said Boyd and Raylan together are magic. I must admit that even though Timothy Olyphant is great as Raylan, Walton Goggins' Boyd is a one of a kind experience. "You are criminals - I am the outlaw!"
ReplyDeleteJustified is one of my dad's favorite shows. I have only seen the first half of the first season so far, but I look forward to watching the rest.
ReplyDeleteTyrion is clearly a favorite. :-) Good to know. And good for Arya, I´m guessing the is the youngest actress to get that many votes.
ReplyDeleteI never liked Seinfeld either. I couldn't stand Kramer or Elaine. Also, I agree Michael on La Femme Nikita was hot.
ReplyDeleteFirst season is great, but IMHO the second is the best. It's not by accident that tha only award the show got went to Margot Martindale for her acting. But it's hard to rank the seasons, each have their own memorable moments and characters. What was a surprise to me is that - according to the showrunner and the late Elmore Leonard - the whole show happens in about a year's timeframe.
ReplyDeleteI think she is the second youngest character nominated period. If Tyrion had not been in the contest, she would have come into the contest at his exact same ranking.
ReplyDeleteSeinfeld is one of the few shows where I actively disliked ALL the characters. I kept trying to see what others saw but it simply was not for me.
ReplyDeleteReally? That is surprising. That's an awful lot happening in one year. Then again 24 took place in one day so...
ReplyDeleteI understand, my Lost & Battlestar bluerays, are getting worn out as well. Hulu used to have seasons 1-3 on it's free service, now you have to be a plus member. "The Killing Fields" is in season four.
ReplyDeleteDarewall is a link site. Just make sure, you have a good popup blocker with your browser. I use Firefox and it's PUB, and everything works fine.
That was kind of the point. They were petty, jealous, narcissistic pricks. It was what made it great the neurosis of each character and how it affected their lives day in and out leading them to these horrible and awkward scenarios.
ReplyDeleteI am glad that you loved the show. Most people did, but I cannot watch a show if I can't at least root for the characters. I have to have characters I like to pull me through especially if the show is known for being a "show about nothing." I didn't care for any of the characters so I didn't care about them.
ReplyDeleteIt wasn't about nothing actually. It stopped being that about 3 seasons in.
ReplyDeleteThat's just how I heard the actors and critics refer to it.
ReplyDeleteYeah it was always misleading.
ReplyDeleteI had to replace a Supernatural DVD because one of the discs simply would not go past a certain point anymore. No scratches that I could see. I figured the DVD was just tired of me watching the episode and went on strike.
ReplyDeleteNetflix has all 5 seasons of Sliders on streaming so I will catch it there. Thanks for the tips with Darewall.
I'm shocked by what 4 made the final 4. Lol. Those 4 shows have the biggest fanbases on this site.
ReplyDeleteHawk was definitely one cool cat! I wanted to get the dvds of Nothern Exposure but i heard they rushed them out so fast that they botched the qualitly and sound. I read the reviews and they weren't that great. Lately i've had the itch pretty bad so i probably will go out and get them anyway, and yes it was charming.
ReplyDeleteAgain, sorry about the titles instead of what you asked for, i could have put more effort into it. By that time yesterday i just couldn't think my back had been acting up.
Factually incorrect. OUAT and Arrow are more popular on the site that Mentalist and Supernatural.
ReplyDeleteBeckett vs Dean final!
ReplyDeleteCongratulations Kate fans on going on to the final round. Beasties put up a great fight. Voted Vincent this round and voting Kate next round. I love romance and scifi, so I actually watch both of these shows. See you next round
ReplyDeleteI knew Arrow was and it doesn't surprise me about OUaT either. Thanks for for clarifying.
ReplyDeleteTitles work just as well as names. No big deal. Sorry your back was bothering you. I hope you feel better now. I had the zippered DVDs of Northern Exposure at one point, but someone borrowed them so I too will probably have to rebuy. I didn't remember sound issues but I have a cheap TV anyway.
ReplyDeleteWatched about three eps of Supernatural and it was not for me, same with Bones, so I'm out...
ReplyDeleteImpressed though that Beckett has such a huge fan base, who knew? Especially since no where near that number voted for her in previous rounds. Once my faves are out I stop voting, I don't want to skew the numbers for anyone else's preferred characters.
As for Michael from Nikita, OMG, I was totally obsessed by that man. Not just him but Peta Wilson who played Nikita was born for the role. The two together had an onscreen chemistry that was unbelievable. Definitely one of my top three shows of all time, seriously... I gave the newer version a shot but just couldn't get in to it, I guess the previous characters spoiled it for me.
I'm obsessed by anything that has a spy theme, like Nikita, House of Cards, 24, Homeland, that sort of thing.
That said, I have to admit that BATB (and Vincent in particular) is my guilty pleasure these days.
Votes usually go up at the end of a contest because it takes fandoms a little while to find and promote it. Also, some people voted for others no longer in the contest before. I adored both Michael and Nikita in La Femme Nikita. I had a harder time with Nikita but I ended up liking that show as well. Have you ever tried Burn Notice or Covert Affairs?
ReplyDeleteImpatiently waiting for the next season of Covert Affairs, but not at all familiar with Burn Notice. I think I may have seen it listed on Netflix, is it the same type of show?
ReplyDeleteBurn Notice is my favorite spy show and it has one of my favorite female characters ever. Like most shows the first seasons has its ups and downs but I loved it. It also has a lot of great guest stars. It's definitely on Netflix and it ended last season so if you like it you don't have to wait for a new season. Plus it's one of those shows that new it was ending so it wraps everything up and gives the audience a great final episode.
ReplyDeleteExcellent! I'll check it out for sure, I really just can't get enough of the spy stuff. Thanks for the tip :)
ReplyDeleteIf you do get a chance to watch it, let me know what you think.
ReplyDeleteReally? Arrow and OUAT more popular than Mentalist and SPN? Wow.
ReplyDeleteGuilty pleasure is right. Vincent is to die for lol
ReplyDeletei love your assessment of WKRP.
ReplyDeletei found a crudy old copy of the tv movie for Man From Atlantis on line a few years ago. The pilot holds up pretty well
I'll have to look for it. Thanks.
ReplyDeleteYep, I was too - even my mother and grandmother preferred Bo!
ReplyDeleteI liked Deanna but I loved Picard - I used to tell my mom (who preferred Kirk) that I preferred Picard because he would at least try the diplomatic approach but if that didn't work, he had no problem blowing you out of the sky! Of course, it could be the accent too ;-)
Very well said.
ReplyDeleteThe characters on the show aren't likable in a rooting-for-them kind of way. In fact, the more the series progressed the more they became assholes (which was kind of the point of the finale). This show has touched every single aspect of daily life in a brilliant intelligent way that is timeless. A facebook friend of mine once wrote- "first there was Seinfeld, then there was life".
Thanks I tried my best o sum it up, so I'm happy you liked it. Lol that is hilarious.
ReplyDeleteThat's a tough question ! I can't just answer like that, let me think about it.
