Sci-fi set in space, when was the last time we had that kind of show? Probably Stargate Universe. But I want more weird and wonderful space shows like Farscape with alien races looking alien. I was disappointed that Defiance decided to set its story on Earth, it has a range of different races and languages but restricted it to boring old Earth. Think bigger TV shows!
It may not be a genre, but I am still hoping for new projects where sci-fi blends with everyday life. What I mean by that is, take Under the Dome as an example; something supernatural happens in a normal city in our day and age. I don't want it too sci-fi-y, but I still want sci-fi blended with everyday humans. Those types of shows really intrigue me, which I guess is why UTD is my favorite drama :D
Definitely NOT procedural, we have way too many of those already. It's pretty much the enemy of creativity on TV: don't have a single original idea for a show? Write another one where a cop/doctor/lawyer/whatever has a different case every week, and put in a "twist" where he or she crackes cases by tying their shoelaces together or something. Done!
Not dramas either - at least the ones that are largely romance-centric.
I voted for action, would like to see more shows that don't just have random, brief action scenes but elaborately choreographed fights and cool stunts. I miss Alias and Nikita in that regard. Also, I forgot to vote for "other" - thrillers with lots of great twists and clever, complex mysteries. I want to see new ideas and clever storytelling. Too many shows rehash the same concepts over and over and over again. Whenever I see a description for a new show that goes like "Cindy moves to the big city, where she has to deal with a series of challenges in both her personal and professional life...", I know it's something I wouldn't touch with a six-foot pole.
I would also love to have some sci-fi in space. I have always been interested in the universe. I was searching for something like that to watch over the summer but couldn't really find anything besides Firefly. I am glad The 100 is having one part of the storyline in space, but this might be over soon.
Definitely more serialized sci-fi/fantasy/action (Lost, Alias, etc.) shows in general. Procedurals are a snoozefest (the only one I like and watch is Elementary) and they are everywhere.
I also miss a good old teen drama like The O.C. Call me sappy but I do miss this kind of show. I'm not counting Gossip Girl in, though, since it went downhill after season 2 and it didn't have even half of a tenth of the emotional weight and quality of The O.C. The Carrie Diaries was great, but it was cancelled too soon.
Science-fiction, fantasy and dramas in general are my favorite, so I voted for those three. I think there should be more sci-fi on TV (I mean not sci-fi used as a pretext to make a new procedural, soap opera or teen drama, real science fiction like Lost or BSG), and much more fantasy shows (only GOT right now), even if it's expensive I'm sure it would have succes (if the storie's good). Anyway I think there are far too comedies on TV right now, and much of them are really bad (there are less and less really funny comedies), so I'd like to see more AMBITIOUS dramas on TV, but no more unoriginal procedurals, soap operas or medical dramas that networks want to sell us every year.
To be fair, TV isn't about creativity. It's about the $$$$, and procedural case-of-the-week shows earn millions (I want to say billions?) in syndication. While I do agree I also want creative shows, I'm not holding my breath for one. It only happens certain times that networks are willing to go for shows that can't earn them anything in syndication, and even then, the chances of cancellation are much higher than for a show with syndication possibilities. I'd like more science-fiction comedies, fantasy comedies and horror comedies. So basically what Edgar Wright is doing in his wonderful filmography (Spaced, Shaun of the Dead, Hot Fuzz, Scott Pilgrim vs. the World, The World's End, and Ant Man if the geniuses at Marvel had let him do what he was hired for years ago). I'm also looking forward to the Wachowski's Sense8 on Netflix and I hope it'll be successful enough so that premium cable channels finally delve into serious science-fiction.

I went with comedy, but I don't want the traditional 23 min comedy, I want the whole hour comedy ala Pushing Daisies, something that tries to innovate and be a fresh breath of air. Galavant looks like it could do something like that, but it's only a half hour, which was a bit underwhelming, and it also is glued into a hard timeslot with no life support, so I don't think it will make it. I also voted fantasy and sci-fi, but to be honest we already have our good fare of those shows (special thanks to The CW for bringing so many this season!)

Well, this poll is about what we'd like to see happen, regardless of whether or not it's a realistic prospect given the TV business model. As you say, procedurals carry a far smaller risk for the network and end up being a success, even a modest success, more often than high-concept shows. But that doesn't mean they're actually good. Unfortunately, what usually happens is that these lazy, seen-them-a-thousand-times-before shows do well, while original and smart shows don't resonate with the audience - or the fraction of the audience that the obsolete Nielsen system actually measures - and get cancelled.
I quite enjoy Reign, now that the triangle stuff is over anyway, but yes it's not really historically accurate, which is the reason I tuned in to begin with. I much prefer The Musketeers over it as it is far more based on reality with it's historical figures, but even that meanders in its plots at times.
Lol yeah, it has changed quite a few things, the one that really annoys me is making Francis dashing and sexy rather than the immature and sickly lad that he was. I think it would be a far more interesting tale if that was the case, the power struggle between his mother and wife (since they have upped the ages of the children involved) due to him not being fit to rule would have been a better tale to tell. But then it's the CW, we should expect these changes I guess ;)
Procedural + Medical: I always like characters who are medical examiners just like Dr. Megan Hunt (Body of Proof) and Dr. Maura Isles (Rizzoli & Isles). :)
The universe is vast, there are countless worlds out there, so many stories waiting to be told, and people keep setting series on this one tiny world we already know so well? Now you make me want to watch Babylon 5 again.
Don't get me wrong but the O.C also went down in quality in the 4rth season,it was unwatchable-Not that it can be compared to gossip girl.The first 2 seasons of the O.C were awesome IMO,quality went downhill after that!
Sci-fi is for me. Eureka was one of my all time favorites because it showed a lot of science and a lot of fun, and now that kind of series are even less common which is sad.
The science-fiction I grew up on roamed the whole universe, countless worlds and cultures and adventures beyond wildest dreams, and now everything is tied down to this one world we already know. When did imagination get so small? When did we lose it all? Let's see some real action.
Honestly I was never into science fiction but I enjoyed Star Crossed this year and I would welcome something along those lines. I would also like to see a good family drama or something similar to Friday Night Lights/Parenthood.
I suppose that will depend on if they will green light a third season or not. I can't see them taking the gamble of moving Mary to Scotland and recasting the whole show if the ratings don't pick up. I think a large part of the audience only watch for the ships anyway, unfortunately, so killing him off could well kill the show off...
Oh, sorry, just spotted the edit about Henry killing his brother, Francis. There are many at the time, and even some now, who think that he or Catherine had something to do with his death as it was so sudden after accepting a drink from someone. I personally think it was more to do with the damp conditions he and Henry were kept in when they were held captive in place of they father which made him weak later in his teens. But I thought it was interesting the way it was played out in the show.
I wanted to love Farscape, I honestly did, but - on top of Channel Nine completely screwing up handling it - it was really distracting to see all these Aussie actors (and locations) we knew from every other show on down here, more than a few of them giving half-hearted (in comparison to their other shows) performances. At least it never got the live-on-air lengthy abusive sf-fans-are-unaustralian rant from a Nine sports presenter that Babylon 5 did.
I love sci-fi and fantasy. However, I would love to see more good sci-fi TV shows centered around dystopian or futuristic societies (such as in the Handmaid's tale, Dune, Gattaca, Hunger Games, In Time, the Chrysalids, etc). I get the feeling that these types of futuristic shows are much harder to pull off on TV, because the writers are faced with the challenge of inventing a completely different world without making it seem too artificial or ridiculous. A number of these shows have sounded great on paper (e.g. Terra Nova and, Revolution) but ended up falling short. Almost Human was great and I wish it hadn't been cancelled. I also love those sci-fy shows that center around a mystery or puzzle that needs to be solved (like Haven, Lost, Under the Dome, etc)
Aside from the sci fi shows, I tend to love the pure courtroom dramas like The Good Wife and the Practice, but surprisingly there aren't that many of them. Also, prime time soaps like Revenge, Desperate Housewives, Scandal, Ugly Betty and Devious Maids are always fun to watch, so I wouldn't mind seeing more of those. Also, whatever formula was used to make Breaking Bad and Dexter (ignoring the series finale!)...we need more of that! I also don't think we need any more sitcoms or procedural cop/detective shows
Try Devious Maids. It's surprisingly very good and has a Desperate Housewives vibe. I think it's much better than Mistresses, the other soap opera that was released around the same time.
I said Science fiction shows ! I want to see more in space and with new "alien races"... I miss shows like stargate sg1 - Battlestar galactica - Farscape... And i'm not talking about defiance or The 100 that are just on earth... so it doesn't have the same feeling as the older sci-fi shows
I love historical dramas! Vikings, the Tudors, and the Borgias have been great! Michael Hirst is great at bringing history to life! I'd like to see him continue to do these kinds of series.
Actually it would be nice to see another quality historical crime drama like the Brother Cadfael stories too. There are some good historical ones like the Alexander McCall Smith's Ladies Detective Agency stories, Anne Perry's Victorian detective series (Monk and Thomas Pitt series), Lindsey Davis' Roman detective series, and Laurie King's Sherlock and wife detective stories, and others. I think there was an ancient Egyptian one I read too. Some good stuff to draw upon in an interesting setting. I know PBS Mystery does one once in a while, but I'd like to see longer term story lines for some of these series.
Agreed, I still can't believe they're launching a new NCIS and a new CSI (after burying the previous two), it is so ridiculous. The action show I really liked was The Unit, it had plenty of men in uniform going on dangerous missions and not too much drama, Strike Back is pretty badass too.
Oh my god, I'll never forget Gilmore Girls, I never thought I would like such a wholesome show but it was so brilliantly written and with two fantastic main characters.
I feel ya. The upcoming Ascension about a murder that occurs on a spaceship and the fallout, and space opera adaptation, Leviathan Wakes, could very well fulfill our desires.
In regards to fantasy, they`re doing an adaptation of the award winning fantasy novel American Gods. So things are looking up on that front also!
I know! It's hard to find shows whose casts and scripts are in sintony and leave you feeling good vibes. Last year I found in Brothers and Sisters and Grey's Anatomy, even though they both have some heavy moments, and now I think I'll try some '90s WB shows.
On a somewhat similar note, I would love to see more anthology series a la "The Twilight Zone" or "The Outer Limits". Those series are classic for a reason, and I like to think that there's certain directors/writers out there who could come up with a great show in that mold again. It'd be a nice blend of the sci-fi/supernatural stuff that people love, but there'd be enough realism and drama in there for those who like that stuff, too. (It's not sci-fi, more straight up horror/drama, but if we could have more mystery shows like "Alfred Hitchcock Presents", that'd be cool, too.)
Same for me it was my very first obsession ! I was so obsessed that I started watching it in english on the internet when I was 13! ( before that it was dubbed in french on TV ) and learned the language ! :D So thanks to Stargate SG1 I now speak english !
While I agree that a proper/classic Sci-Fi Show is missing. I would wish for more action shows, there is Arrow and Strike Back and thats too little for my taste :-) I love Urban Fantasy and we have quite many of them, but a good classic one would be nice too. I do consider GoT a fantasy show, but it is all about the game (just like Battlstar Galactica was more than just a Sci-Fi Show). I am missing some an iconic Show (non-Comedy) where expressions like "another red shirts" are created. On the other hand we have plenty of comic-adaption - it's just another era.
Fantasy, if it's not based on the whole true love thing, that killed Wonderland. It is the least underrepresented genre on TV. I also think more sci fi and action are needed. Mostly though I want more shows where they are not pairing the main characters up even when it makes no sense. My biggest wish though - shows with no love triangles or love geometry of any kind. They used to dominate TV but now they are almost extinct.
Agreed. But only if they stick more closely to the books than most TV shows do. I love how dystopia took over YA lit and to an extent, movies. Time to bring that to TV, which other than Revolution and Walking Dead we really haven't had lately.
Yes I agree, The reason I love Modern Family and The Middle is that a whole family can watch, yes I do like shows like HIMYM and MOM, but I think there needs to be more family sitcoms, this season though there seems like there are quite a few! Fresh off the boat and Black-ish to name a few.
I was surprised by the number of good familt friendly comedies that came out last season. Yes, most of them got cancelled, but I'm hoping this means that networks will stop only going for the raunchiest comedies they can find. I'm looking forward to seeing what the fall season brings us.

Also, prime time soaps like Revenge, Desperate Housewives, Scandal, Ugly Betty and Devious Maids are always fun to watch, so I wouldn't mind seeing more of those. Also, whatever formula was used to make Breaking Bad and Dexter (ignoring the series finale!)...we need more of that! I also don't think we need any more sitcoms or procedural cop/detective shows
Try Devious Maids. It's surprisingly very good and has a Desperate Housewives vibe. I think it's much better than Mistresses, the other soap opera that was released around the same time.
ReplyDeleteI said Science fiction shows ! I want to see more in space and with new "alien races"... I miss shows like stargate sg1 - Battlestar galactica - Farscape... And i'm not talking about defiance or The 100 that are just on earth... so it doesn't have the same feeling as the older sci-fi shows
ReplyDeleteI love historical dramas! Vikings, the Tudors, and the Borgias have been great! Michael Hirst is great at bringing history to life! I'd like to see him continue to do these kinds of series.
ReplyDeleteActually it would be nice to see another quality historical crime drama like the Brother Cadfael stories too. There are some good historical ones like the Alexander McCall Smith's Ladies Detective Agency stories, Anne Perry's Victorian detective series (Monk and Thomas Pitt series), Lindsey Davis' Roman detective series, and Laurie King's Sherlock and wife detective stories, and others. I think there was an ancient Egyptian one I read too. Some good stuff to draw upon in an interesting setting. I know PBS Mystery does one once in a while, but I'd like to see longer term story lines for some of these series.

I am so surprised that most people picked sci-fi, it's my favorite too and I miss Stargate like crazy.

ReplyDeleteAgreed, I still can't believe they're launching a new NCIS and a new CSI (after burying the previous two), it is so ridiculous.
ReplyDeleteThe action show I really liked was The Unit, it had plenty of men in uniform going on dangerous missions and not too much drama, Strike Back is pretty badass too.
Unfortunately it seems to be a common pattern and not just for television.
ReplyDeleteOh my god, I'll never forget Gilmore Girls, I never thought I would like such a wholesome show but it was so brilliantly written and with two fantastic main characters.
ReplyDeleteLike Rome? I always heard that this show was really into accuracy as far as the history was concerned, probably what made it so expensive.

ReplyDeleteI feel ya. The upcoming Ascension about a murder that occurs on a spaceship and the fallout, and space opera adaptation, Leviathan Wakes, could very well fulfill our desires.
ReplyDeleteIn regards to fantasy, they`re doing an adaptation of the award winning fantasy novel American Gods. So things are looking up on that front also!
I know! It's hard to find shows whose casts and scripts are in sintony and leave you feeling good vibes. Last year I found in Brothers and Sisters and Grey's Anatomy, even though they both have some heavy moments, and now I think I'll try some '90s WB shows.

ReplyDeleteOn a somewhat similar note, I would love to see more anthology series a la "The Twilight Zone" or "The Outer Limits". Those series are classic for a reason, and I like to think that there's certain directors/writers out there who could come up with a great show in that mold again. It'd be a nice blend of the sci-fi/supernatural stuff that people love, but there'd be enough realism and drama in there for those who like that stuff, too.

ReplyDeleteSame for me it was my very first obsession ! I was so obsessed that I started watching it in english on the internet when I was 13! ( before that it was dubbed in french on TV ) and learned the language ! :D So thanks to Stargate SG1 I now speak english !

I love Urban Fantasy and we have quite many of them, but a good classic one would be nice too. I do consider GoT a fantasy show, but it is all about the game (just like Battlstar Galactica was more than just a Sci-Fi Show). I am missing some an iconic Show (non-Comedy) where expressions like "another red shirts" are created. On the other hand we have plenty of comic-adaption - it's just another era.
I know there was a pilot for Delirium a few years back. Other books that come to mind are Legend and The Darkest Minds
ReplyDeleteFantasy, if it's not based on the whole true love thing, that killed Wonderland. It is the least underrepresented genre on TV. I also think more sci fi and action are needed. Mostly though I want more shows where they are not pairing the main characters up even when it makes no sense. My biggest wish though - shows with no love triangles or love geometry of any kind. They used to dominate TV but now they are almost extinct.

ReplyDeleteAgreed. But only if they stick more closely to the books than most TV shows do. I love how dystopia took over YA lit and to an extent, movies. Time to bring that to TV, which other than Revolution and Walking Dead we really haven't had lately.

Yes I agree, The reason I love Modern Family and The Middle is that a whole family can watch, yes I do like shows like HIMYM and MOM, but I think there needs to be more family sitcoms, this season though there seems like there are quite a few! Fresh off the boat and Black-ish to name a few.
ReplyDeleteI was surprised by the number of good familt friendly comedies that came out last season. Yes, most of them got cancelled, but I'm hoping this means that networks will stop only going for the raunchiest comedies they can find. I'm looking forward to seeing what the fall season brings us.
