  1. The beautiful Tatiana Maslany does awesome accents, British and Ukrainian.

    ReplyDelete
  2. David Lyons not using his charming Aussie accent in Revolution!

    ReplyDelete
  3. Love James Masters, but honestly his Spike accent was terrible for at least 2 seasons. Juliet Landau's was very good from the start though.

    ReplyDelete
  4. The most recent example for great accent work is (imho) Pedro Pascal as Oberyn Martell in Game of Thrones.

    ReplyDelete
  5. Anna Torv, if I hadn't seen her on McLeod's Daughters I honestly would've had no idea that she's Australian

    ReplyDelete
  6. I like Odessa from Devious Maids.

    ReplyDelete
  7. Definitely Alexis Denisof and James Marsters. I thought they were both British originally lol. Also Anna Torv

    ReplyDelete
  8. Anna Torv from the list. But really overall Tatiana Maslany! I really thought she was British. She's amazing!!! She can do so many accents so well and in a single show. She is truly underrated as this poll as a testament unless it was created before s1 of orphan black aired

    ReplyDelete
  9. Hugh Laurie wins for me. Tatiana Maslany is second. Kevin Spacey from House of Cards is third. Eliza Taylor from The 100 does a darn good American accent considering she's Aussie

    ReplyDelete
  14. Andrew Lincoln does an awesome job "hiding" his accent!

    ReplyDelete
  15. James Marsters although he did take several eps to get it right. ;) Alex O'Loughlin an Aussie on Moonlight(I still put a pox on CBS for cancelling it) and H50 & Tatiana Maslany, have to add Luke Mitchell from The Tomorrow People.

    ReplyDelete
  16. Andrew Lincoln. Wasn't until I heard him in an interview that I knew he was English.

    ReplyDelete
  17. Alex O'loughlin Hawaii Five-0.

Tatiana Maslany does american, ukranian and british accents , there isno one better.

    ReplyDelete
  26. Alexis Denisof is on there twice? Why? He basically uses the same accent on all those shows.

    ReplyDelete
  27. Hugh Laurie of course, plus Stephen Moyer - True Blood, Jesse Spencer - Chicago Fire

    ReplyDelete
  28. I really think his accent on Grimm is not as good as it used to be, on Buffy and Angel. I wanted to know if others felt that way.

    ReplyDelete
  29. My poll and I'm kicking myself for not adding Martin Freeman on Fargo.

peter dinklage in game of thrones. hearing his normal american accent in x-men DOFP just seemed wrong

    ReplyDelete
  31. Michele Klinger12 June 2014 at 13:36

    Hugh Laurie for sure

    ReplyDelete
  32. Although I hated the character, I was always impressed by how American Hugh Laurie's House sounded in what little I've seen of the show. If I hadn't already known he was British, I would have never guessed from this part.

    ReplyDelete
  33. Panos Nestoras12 June 2014 at 14:17

Idris Elba and Dominic West from The Wire did a fantastic job with their accents.. I was shocked when i realized they weren't actually Americans. Also amazing is Hugh Laurie's accent.

    ReplyDelete
  34. Definitely David Lyons from Revolution.

    ReplyDelete
  35. Gina Bellman used an impressive variety of accents remarkably well on Leverage, same goes for Tatiana Maslany on Orphan Black. Speaking of Orphan Black, it is just super strange to hear Maria Doyle Kennedy (Mrs S) use her native Irish accent - her Spanish accent on The Tudors was so spot-on that I was convinced she must be really Spanish.
Alan Cummings also deserves high praise for his American accent on The Good Wife, because boy does he have a strong Scottish accent in real life, lol.
And last but not least, Daniel Davis (who is American) is famous for his flawless English accent as Niles on The Nanny. :)

    ReplyDelete
  36. Alexis denioff: surprised he turned out American
Hugh dancy I know he's British but still kinda jarring how good he's able to hide it.

    ReplyDelete
  37. Simon Baker - Mentalist

    ReplyDelete
  38. Let's not forget she also did - even for 5 minutes - a German accent!

    ReplyDelete
  39. How could you leave out Alex O'Loughlin hands down the best! Australian to American/Hawaiian

    ReplyDelete
  40. What about Daniel Gillies (Elijah; The Originals)?

    ReplyDelete
  41. Jenn_FiveDollarShake12 June 2014 at 17:12

Matthew Rhys, in real life he was born and raised in Wales - now playing a Russian pretending to be American on an American tv show.

    ReplyDelete
  42. Other:
    Alex O'Loughlin - Hawaii Five-0

    ReplyDelete
  43. Obviously Rachel Griffiths, her fake American accent is genius, SHE is genius :)

    ReplyDelete
  44. From the list: Jame Marsters, Damien Lewis (Homeland, Life, and especially Band of Brothers -great work), and Yvonne Strahovsky/Anna Torv. Off the list: Tatiana Maslany for sure

    ReplyDelete
  45. ...Also not to forget that she played Sarah (London accent) playing Beth (Canada accent) and she made it sound like a Brit trying to do Canadian. Alos not to mention She played Helena (Ukraine) Playing Sarah, playing Beth. Of course the latter she didn't speak all that much.

    ReplyDelete
  46. Being from the South, I can attest that no one I know speaks like Kevin Spacey's "southern" accent. It is horrible. In fact it is the goto southern accent that people use when they cannot do a true southern accent. It is as bad as Dick Van Dyke's Mary Poppins "British" accent Guvna!

    ReplyDelete
  47. She is really good too. I find that most Aussie actors can do a passable "American" accent. Aussies seem to be better than most at this. there are some exceptions though. Simon Baker (Patrick Jane The Mentalist) for the most part does fine, but every so often I hear his Aussie come through.

    ReplyDelete
  48. Andrew Lincoln has gotten better over the years, but in the first season his southern accent was atrocious. He drew out the words too long trying to sound slower or something. Now he speaks with a normal cadence that fits much better.

    ReplyDelete
  49. I have to disagree with you on Stephen Moyer. His Southern Gentleman accent it laughable. See Kevin Spacey in House of cards for another laughable Southern Gent.

    ReplyDelete
  50. He is awesome! He really hits the nuances of the Upper Midwest accent.

    ReplyDelete
  51. I love accents! I don't know, it's just my thing. I study them as much as possible.
From the Poll I would say in order from best to passable:
1 Rachel Griffiths/ Swear I had no idea that she was Aussie until I did a search last year for info on Camp.
    2. Damien Lewis/ I did know that he was English, but he is so great at his American that it makes me laugh to hear his real accent. His real on sounds sort of fake-ish to me.
3.Hugh Laurie/ Another actor I had know idea was not American until I googled him a few years back.
    4. Lauren Cohen/ She was born in America and her family moved to England when she was young so she has a sort of mixed accent in real life, it sounds rather Aussie to me, but it is just a hybrid Brit/Amer accent. Anyway she does such a realistic southern girl accent, that she sounds like some of the girls around where I live. (Southwest Alabama/Gulf Coast)
Anna Torv gets a mention because she played Olivia Dunham for so long that each season she got better at hiding her Aussie. It slipped out sometimes though. Especially in season 1.

    ReplyDelete
  52. Very few people here watch it but Philip Winchester (American) on Strike Back does the best British accent. I'm British and was awestruck when I found out he was American.

    ReplyDelete
  53. Alex O'Loughlin "Hawaii Five-0"

    ReplyDelete
  54. WAHHH Niles wasn't English for real? O.O

    the mentalist simon baker

    ReplyDelete
  56. From the list: Hugh Laurie, Damien Lewis, Alexis Denisof.
    Simon Baker - The mentalist

  57. Jason Momoa as Khal Drogo, speaking Dortraki....amazing!
Also Tatiana Maslany is doing a great job.
And ofcourse I just have to mention Antony Starr (Banshee) who is from New Zealand.

I heard a story that when Hugh Laurie sent in his audition tape the producers were only looking for American actors. When they heard his audition the producers declared he was the kind of American actor they were looking for.

    ReplyDelete
  59. Was it? I think I preferred his accent in season 1 and to be honest, I think it might be the reason why I kept watching the show because at first, I didn't really like but now it's become my favorite show... :)
I also compared him to Lauren whose British accent is still there when she speaks :)

    ReplyDelete
  60. What about Robert Carlyle (OUAT) and John Barrowman (arrow)

    ReplyDelete
  61. SHIELDNCISArrowfan12 June 2014 at 20:45

also paul blackthorne for arrow.....his interview is completely different from on screen

    ReplyDelete
  62. Shocking, I know! That's just how good an actor he is. :)
He's from Gurdon, Arkansas, USA, and according to imdb:
    "When The Nanny
(1993) first went on the air, many people believed that the very
British butler "Niles" was definitely being played by a British actor.
This Southern boy was so convincing in his role that many fans wrote to
the show and suggested that he teach Charles Shaughnessy (a true British native) how to improve his accent!"

  63. To me (I live on the Gulf Coast in Southwestern Alabama) Lauren has a perfect example of a rural southern girl accent. I don't hear even a hint of her Brit coming through. I also don't hear Brit in Andrew's accent either, but his season one accent sounded to me more like a south Texas (they hit their R's really hard and speak a bit slower) accent than a Georgia accent (Softer r's and a moderate cadence). It is apparent to me that he worked with a voice coach between season 1, and 2, and it has gotten better over the seasons. As a Brit he is not use to a rhotic accent (one in witch all the R's are pronounced) so his hard R's sounded a little pirate-ish (aaaaarrr) in season 1. Like "Caaaaarrrl"

    ReplyDelete
  64. Yes, but he's english. I don't know, I find the scottish accent stronger than the british one, so more difficult to overcome and hide. Maybe I'm wrong :-)

    ReplyDelete
  65. Oh really? When I heard Lauren for the first time, I said "Oh finally there's a Brit!" I just knew the second she started talking.
And who among the cast, has the typical accent from Atlanta/Georgia according to you?
But now that you've said it, I remember me complaining about the fact that he was talking too slowly!
I think I heard in an interview that Lauren, a coach and Andrew have a conversation via Skype once a week to train their accent with the coach :)

    ReplyDelete
  66. I'm an old fart so I'm voting for John Hillerman from Magnum P.I. That guy got letters from thousands of British fans who believed he was British. He was from Lubbock, Texas! LOL!

    ReplyDelete
  67. Scott Wilson (Hershel) had a typical Georgia mid south type accent. I don't know about Lauren, but I have heard that Andrew stays in character the whole time he's filming so as to keep the accent fresh in his mind and ears.

    ReplyDelete
  68. I know it's not very close to a southern accent, but it isn't Spacey's natural one. That's what the poll asked. I think it's a one of a kind voice unique to Spacey and the character which is why I like it

    ReplyDelete
  69. Other - Alex O'Loughlin, when I first saw an interview of him I was so surprised, his Australian accent is really thick and you'd never guess it hearing him with an American accent on Hawaii Five-0
And Ed Westwick on Gossip Girl, when I saw some behind the scenes footage of him on set I thought it was amazing how quickly he switched from English to American accent, even his tone of voice, his diction were different

    ReplyDelete
  70. Gotta love the Aussies.

    ReplyDelete
  71. I love Strike Back!! I can't wait for it to come back.
I was so surprised when I found Winchester was American and Stapleton Australian, Winchester especially looks like a typically English guy.

    ReplyDelete
  72. It's true that Moyer doesn't sound at all English on True Blood but even I - who's French - could tell you that his southern accent is really no good.
I'd be curious to know what you think of Anna Paquin's accent, is she better than her husband or worse?

    ReplyDelete
  73. From the list: Hugh Laurie

Other: Martin Freeman (Fargo) and Hugh Dancy (Hannibal)

    ReplyDelete
  74. Thanks, that's so interesting.

    ReplyDelete
  75. I watch Strike Back, I love it!!

    ReplyDelete
  76. Thanks for the IMDB note! WOW! I'm reading and still can't believe it.. O.O lolol! Suddenly I have the urge to watch Daniel Davis interviews. That's the second trivia fact from the Nanny that blows my mind away, the first one being watching Yetta at the end of the series finale when the cast went out the curtain. Watching Ann Gilbert with her Yetta's clothes but being her normal self was SHOCKING.. and she didn't even talk, (they were just waving) it was the look in his eyes, it was so un-Yetta.. lol! What a great actress!

    ReplyDelete
  77. From List - Alexis and James from BTVS and Angel.

Not on list - Ryan Kwanten, TB. And i want to say Alex O' L. He's really good at hiding his accent, over the years i've watched him. (i stopped watching H50). Also, Phoebe Tonkin, she's also good at hiding hers.

    ReplyDelete
  78. Same here, the final and hopefully the greatest season yet.
I completely agree about Winchester. I remember hearing him in an interview, my mind was blown.

    ReplyDelete
  79. The funny thing about Anna is that she is originally born in Manitoba, Winnipeg, Canada - but she and her family moved to New Zealand, and she grew up there, and lived there until 1995. Being a child actress she was immersed in the Hollywood scene while working so she developed a standard American accent/General American. As far as her Louisiana accent it is pretty good, but a little on the campy/goofy side. I have heard people with that type of accent in real life though. So She is better.

    ReplyDelete
  80. What about Robert Taylor from longmire; he's Australian. And David Lyons from Revolution, also an Aussie, as is Yvonne Strahovski.

    ReplyDelete
  81. Cant believe I'm saying this but creds to Jay Ryan to switch from the NZ accent. I'll say NZ and Australian actors in most shows have done a great job,
Daniel Gillies, Jay Ryan, Karl Urban and Alan Dale from NZ
Manu Benett, Phoebe Tonkin, Claire Holt and Nathaniel Buzolic from Aust.

    ReplyDelete
  82. On the list: Anna Torv, Daniel Lewis, Hugh Laurie, James Masters, and Rachel Griffiths

    Not on the list:
Matthew Rhys - Brothers & Sisters and The Americans
    Jamie Bamber - Battlestar Galactica
Tatiana Maslany - multiple roles - Orphan Black
    David Anders - Alias
    David Lyons - Revolution
Robert Carlyle - "Rumple" persona Once Upon A Time
    Hugh Dancy - Hannibal
Micheal Pitt - "whatever accent" Mason Verger is - Hannibal

    ReplyDelete
  83. Jesse Spencer and Eamonn Walker from Chicago Fire are pretty damn good as well if you ask me.

    ReplyDelete
  84. I think she got better with time because I recall in the first season she was slipping quite a bit.

    ReplyDelete
  85. Hugh "THE KING" Laurie wins them all.
    Tatiana comes a close second.

    ReplyDelete
  86. Robert Taylor as Longmire, not using his Aussie accent, sounding so American as a Wyoming Sheriff

    ReplyDelete
  87. Yep, he's very professional in what he does. So is Lauren of course.

    ReplyDelete
  88. Ryan Kwanten: True Blood
    Stephen Moyer: True Blood
    Hugh Dancy: Hannibal

    ReplyDelete
  89. David Morrissey of The Walking Dead. His accent as The Governor is a far cry from his native Liverpudlian scouse.

    ReplyDelete
  90. Jonny Lee Miller in Eli Stone...also best use of having extensive tattoos covered for his character.

    ReplyDelete
  91. Yeah, but JB was raised in the US since age 8 and can switch back and forth between both accents with ease.

    ReplyDelete
  92. Yvonne Strahovski (Chuck, 24LAD) and Tatiana Maslany

    ReplyDelete
  93. Colin O'Donoghue in Once upon a time!!!

    ReplyDelete
  94. He's not using a different accent for the show.

    ReplyDelete
  95. He has a irish accent in real life and does a english accent in the show???

    ReplyDelete
  96. Whoops, my bad. I wasn't aware he was Irish. I always assumed he was British.

    ReplyDelete
  97. Jay Ryan in Beauty and the Beast

    ReplyDelete
  98. Kate Mulgrew as Red on Orange is the New Black -- Russian accent.
