The Returned - Mary Elizabeth Winstead gets Lead Role, Sandrine Holt and Agnes Bruckner also join cast

One of the most hotly pursued actresses this past pilot season, Mary Elizabeth Winstead, has been tapped as one of the leads in Carlton Cuse’s 10-episode A&E drama series The Returned. Also cast in the adaptation of the acclaimed French series are Sandrine Holt (House of Cards, Hostages) and Agnes Bruckner (24). Returned, from A+E Studios and FremantleMedia, focuses on a small town that is turned upside down when several local people who have been long presumed dead suddenly reappear, bringing with them both positive and detrimental consequences. Winstead plays Rowan, the girlfriend of late musician Simon (Mat Vairo) who had a very difficult time getting past his death 10 years ago and now will have to adjust to his return. Holt plays Julie, a competent compassionate doctor who is struggling in her personal life. Bruckner plays the sheriff’s chief deputy.

  2. What an awesome cast this show is getting. I went from not wanting a remake, to being terribly excited, based solely on the actors cast. I think that says a lot about the caliber of these actors.

Still waiting on Claire, Victor, Serge, and Tony. I'd toss a few names out there, but I won't bother. They keep picking unexpected, but satisfying actors. I couldn't compete with the casting directors on this one.

  3. Claire and Victor are the two big roles left to cast. It looks like they are keeping all of the major story lines from the original based on all of the casting so far, but guess there is a chance that one of the returned will not be in the remake.

  4. Without giving anything away from the original, pretty sure you havent seen it, Winstead's role is a great one.

  7. In all honesty, if they want to slim the cast a tiny bit, Serge and Tony could probably be skipped altogether and not have any effect on the plot. Probably Lucy, Frederic, and Costa, too. I wonder if Chloe will be there?

  9. Chloe is 100% essential if they are doing Simon/Adele. I would miss Madame Costa, she brought a lot of humor to the show. I wouldnt miss Serge and Tony, dont want to give anything away for those who havent seen the original but it seems doubtful an American remake would get rid of that story line. Lucy is a key character at the end of season 1 but the remake might not want to go with that story line.

  10. I dunno, I can see them not including Chloe. She adds to the weight of the Simon/Adele story, but with some re-tooling, I can see her being disposed of. That's not saying that I want any characters removed, but I can see such happening to some of the secondary characters who themselves don't have a lot of story. You can add depth to the core cast through other means. So I'm curious to see if the secondary cast will stick around, or be replaced with some other form of plot-device.

Serge is only important because of his heavy relation to Julie's backstory. Tony hardly serves any purpose beyond being his brother. You can easily strip the show of the duo and have Julie face her incident through some other means. What matters is what she believes she experienced, not what caused it.

Eh, Madame Costa didn't do a whole lot for me. She also doesn't seem to important to neither the other characters, nor the mythology. The only reason I can see her being adapted is if they can't trickle in light humor elsewhere.

Lucy definitely becomes a key character at the end of the first season, but I don't see why her role can't be transferred to another character. That'd add mythological importance to someone else, and get rid of a character who doesn't really serve to be an emotional aspect. Not to mention, most of the characters that Lucy is connected to are forgettable tertiary characters (though, they could become more prevalent in the second season). Outside of the cliffhanger, Lucy's only bit of relevance comes from Jerome's affair with her, which could also be easily transferred onto another character.

Again, I don't want those characters removed, but if Cuse & co. want to separate their version a bit from the original, removing these characters are pretty much the only viable changes that could be made without altering the overarching story too much. It all depends on how strictly they want to follow Les Revenants. To be honest, I'm surprised that we haven't yet heard of any entirely new characters. So far, we've just had slight name changes.

  11. I dont want to post spoilers but Chloe is a major part of the Simon/Adele story, she doesnt need to have a story line removed from Simon/Adele to have a major impact on the series. I agree with a lot of your other points especially about new characters.

  12. Looks like we'll have to agree to disagree on how important Chloe is. I do think she is important, though; just not 100% necessary. Granted, I don't even know why I'm spouting any of this. It's not like any insider has given reason to worry about the inclusion of anyone.

  14. I wonder if they're keeping the lesbian characters as such. I don't like the name change (Rowan? why?) but other than that the cast seems strong.
