SpoilerTV Reader Renew/Cancel Predictions - NBC Shows

4 Jun 2014

Hey All,

As you know each year we try to see how good your prediction skills are in determining which shows will be Renewed and which ones will be Cancelled.

You can see how we did last season here.

Today it's the NBC shows. You can find promos, clips and photos for most of the shows via the NBC Menu at the top of the site.

There are 2 Polls below. One for Renewals and one for Cancellations.

So vote below and let us know in the comments which shows you hope will be renewed, and which ones you think will be cancelled.

ABC Renew/Cancel Polls

  1. I found this a lot harder than ABC shows mostly because I completely forgot about half these shows getting picked up to begin with.

Obvious renewals first: The Blacklist, Chicago Fire, Grimm, Law and Order

Most likely to be renewed unless something goes majorly bad: Chicago PD, About A Boy

New shows most likely to do well: A to Z, Constantine, State of Affairs, Marry Me

New shows most likely doomed: Mr Robinson, Mysteries of Laura, Bad Judge, Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt

Shows I really have no idea how they will do: Hannibal - but by this point it would be foolish for them not to just continue with the show. Odyssey,

Shows I really can't even remember getting picked up: One Big Happy, Emerald City, Aquarius, Mission Control, Allegiance

Shows I want to be renewed: Hannibal

New shows I'm interested in based on trailers/news, etc: Constantine, A to Z, Odyssey, Marry Me

  2. Good analysis @Lou Agree it's quite hard to predict NBC, and I agree about Hannibal. Unless the ratings completely collapse I can see a Season 4

  3. NBC has so many new shows this year and really I don't know, it seems like procedural series are doing quite well for them but comedies its hard to guess. The big broad approach of the last few years failed so they seem to be going for sweet comedies that aren't too weird like their Thursday night shows used to be but will it work? No clue!

And yeah Hannibal clearly the deal they have with Gaumont is good enough to have given it 3 seasons so far so why not a 4th? NBC don't have many critical hits left esp with Community gone and Parks and Rec ending.

  4. Returning shows

The Blacklist, Chicago Fire, Chicago PD, Grimm: certain renewals

About A Boy and Hannibal: likely renewed
Law & Order SVU: there were tense negotations this year so I am not sure how it's going next year. I think (and hope) that NBC will give them a heads-up if it's the final season, but for now it will likely get a 17th season. Renewed

    New shows
    Scheduled:
    Marry Me: it's Voice-fueled. Renewed
The Mysteries of Laura: canceled (could be the first one of the 2014-15 season to get the axe)
    Bad Judge: canceled
    A to Z: renewed
Constantine: initial reviews seem a bit mixed, so it might be the next Dracula. Going with renewal anyway
    State of Affairs: Voice-fueled. Renewed
Allegiance: will be interesting to see how The Blacklist does and if it carries over any audience to Allegiance. Could go either way, but ultimately canceled.

Unscheduled: (no idea where these are gonna go)
    Aquarius: canceled
    Emerald City: renewed
    Mission Control: canceled
    Mr. Robinson: canceled
    Odyssey: renewed
    One Big Happy: canceled
    Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt: canceled

  5. Certain renewals: Blacklist, Chicago Fire, Chicago PD, Grimm, Law and Order SVU.
    Likely: About a Boy
Shows where it is impossible to predict and anything could happen because NBC are strange: Everything else.

  6. Mysteries of Laura and a lot of the new comedies seem not so strong (based on their trailers and considering their competition from other networks) except for Marry Me and possibly A to Z, but it's after Bad Judge, so that's troubling.

New dramas appear divided, where State of Affairs seems likely along with possibly Odyssey and Allegiance.

I was really looking forward to Emerald City, but there's not a lot of stuff out or casting, so it's on the fence. Constantine could be a hit, if it can hold onto Grimm's numbers instead of declining like Dracula.

I'm looking forward to Mission Control due to Kristen Ritter, but that show doesn't look like it could survive.

  7. Emmerald City is a mini-serie on 10 episodes, it can't be renewed (normally)...

  8. Are you sure it's a mini-series. All the NBC press releases refer to it as a Series.

In this press releases Emerald City is mentioned as a Series where as The Slap is mentioned as a Mini Series

Also here there is no mention of it being a mini-series.

  9. I'm quite sure I read on several web sites that it was a mini-series in 10 episodes. And in the second link, they refer to it as an "event series", with Heroes Reborn and AD which are also mini-series. But after all, If it is a success, they may try to do a second season, even it it's a mini-series...

  10. In the TCA Press Tour, Greenblatt sai that they haven't decided if Emerald City will be a miniseries or not.

  11. The Blacklist, Grimm, SVU, Chicago twins and Hannibal seem like a sure renewal among the returning dramas. About a Boy being the only returning comedy could be renewed if it appears to be compatible with Marry Me
History is on State of Affairs' side, so it will most likely be renewed. Marry Me is also likely to be renewed. I want A to Z to be renewed among the new comedies, but that's a tough time slot.

  12. Thanks. We'll leave it in the polls for now. No harm in doing so :) We can always remove them later etc.

  13. Constantine reminds me of how Grimm initially did and now its a fan favorite. I think it will stick around and pull around the same number.

Something I'm sure of: The Blacklist will run for at least 6 seasons with a big syndication package (they were already trying to sell it this season, it just did that good)

  16. I'm focusing on fall only. In the obvious renewals, Blacklist (if the Thursday move doesn't screw everything up), the Chicago shows, and Grimm are sure bets. L&O I might put in the obvious renewals, but the negotiations recently show the series ending sooner rather than later, Hannibal is a toss-up as always, depending on what NBC thinks in terms of coproductions and critical appeal, and About a Boy has the least amount of episodes, and it could easily be rid of with little consequence.

As for new shows, State of Affairs does seem likely...if it wasn't for it airing in November. It'll have a weaker lead-in, since Voice drops a bunch later in the season, and if it underperforms in January, it's going down. Marry Me is likely as well; Voice lead-in shows it's the fan favorite of NBC, and it seems compatible with AAB. Laura has to be a self-starter, has bad buzz, and there's already plenty of backups. It's dunzo. Bad Judge and A to Z have no comedy competition for the first 5 episodes, but Biggest Loser isn't the best lead-in out there, and Blacklist is there anyway for midseason. They both could be gone, but I'm still unsure. Constantine is the most unknown out of all of them; it's in a rough timeslot, and it's not a coproduction, so Hannibal numbers won't be accepted. Probably canceled.

  17. It depends on what fails5 June 2014 at 02:08

    Returning shows:
Renewed: Chicago Fire, Chicago PD, Grimm, Hannibal (cheapness), The Blacklist.
Canceled: About a Boy (yep, NBC's last comedy to make syndication will still be Community) and Law and Order: SVU (costs will be unsustainable and NBC will get rid of it even if it gets above-average ratings, Dick Wolf's focus will be changed for the Chicago franchise entirely)
    New Shows:
Renewed: Marry Me and State of Affairs (cushy slots).
    Canceled: everything else.

  18. Since they killed "Community" and "Revolution", i can't trust NBC so i think the most obvious renewals are Law and Order,The Blacklist, Chicago Fire, Grimm, Chicago PD, About A Boy and Hannibal. The others are doomed for all i know.

    ReplyDelete
  19. I don't watch anything on NBC but I'll definitely be checking out Constantine.

  20. Returning Shows:
    - About a Boy: Cancellation
    - Chicago Fire: Renewal
    - Chicago PD: Renewal
    - Grimm: Renewal
    - Hannibal: Renewal
    - Law and Order SVU: I kind of think this is the season it ends
    - The Blacklist: Renewal

New Shows Whose Timeslot we Know:
    - A to Z: Renewal (these comedies are awful to predict)
    - Allegiance: Renewal
    - Bad Judge: Cancellation
    - Constantine: Renewal
    - Marry Me: Cancellation
    - State of Affairs: It's simply too tough to say cancellation here so renewal, but I have my fears
    - The Mysteries of Laura: Cancellation

New Shows whose Timeslot we don't know and some of which I actually forgot what they are about so I have no idea how to predict this:
    - Aquaris
    - Emerald City
    - Mission Control
    - Mr Robinson
    - Odyssey
    - One Big Happy
    - Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt

Returning Shows I will Continue to Watch:
    - About a Boy
    - Grimm
    - Hannibal
    - The Blacklist

New Shows I Will At Least Sample (aka basically every fall show except for laura):
    - A to Z
    - Allegiance
    - Bad Judge
    - Constantine
    - Marry Me
    - State of Affairs
[I will not comment on the midseason shows because most of them I don't really remember what they are about and I need trailers first]
