A weekly feature in which we're trying to find the most compelling, best acted, written, directed and just generally great scenes that we've seen recently on TV.
24: LIVE ANOTHER DAY, "Day 9: 7:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m.", June 23, 2014, Actors: Kiefer Sutherland, Michelle Fairley, The Scene: Jack throws Margot out of the window (picked by Darth Locke & Bradley Adams)
BEAUTY AND THE BEAST, "Ever After", June 23, 2014, Actors: Kristin Kreuk, Jay Ryan
The Scene: Vincent carries Catherine into "their home"
Virginia Fontana: Vincent carrying Catherine into "their home" when they are placed in witness protection. This was a really cute moment of possible foreshadowing with regard to them hopefully getting married someday.
COVERT AFFAIRS, "Shady Lane", June 24, 2014, Actors: Piper Perabo, Christopher Gorham
The Scene: Annie and Auggie's reunion
Virginia Fontana: A complicated and thought-provoking scene, both in terms of the relationship between these two and what Annie is hiding from Auggie.
ENLISTED, "Alive Day", June 22, 2014, Actors: Geoff Stults, Chris Lowell, Parker Young and more
The Scene: Everyone on the beach
Justyna Kubica: If you're gonna end early, end things like this. I think I'm not the only one really disappointed about the cancellation of one of the most genuinely funny and heartwarming shows of the year. But I'm really glad we got to see all of its 13 episodes. Especially this last one, cause it was pretty much a perfect mix of everything that made this show great. In the final scene, Pete leaves the ball to sit alone on the beach, remembering his fallen friends and feeling guilty about his survival. Then everyone start to join him, his brothers and friends. And in the end, they're all there for him, telling him how much he changed for them and making him realize he's not alone. With their support and a beautiful embrace he feels better, enough to join them in their celebration and accepting his new home and place in the world. With wonderful performances by the main cast, a very emotional meaning, exactly the right words and direction this scene is truly THE Scene of The Week and my short comment just doesn't really cover it. Kudos to the cast & crew!
GIRL MEETS WORLD, "Girl Meets World", June 27, 2014, Actors: Ben Savage, Sabrina Carpenter
The Scene: Cory and Maya talk about homework
Klutzy girl: The scene where Cory and Maya are talking about homework and she tells him she has no one at home to help her. That was an unexpected punch to the gut when everything else was funny but it ended up being one of the best parts of the pilot. Looking forward to learning more about these younger characters.
MISTRESSES, "Friends With Benefits", June 23, 2014, Actors: Alyssa Milano and more
The Scene: Savi breaks down over the baby
Klutzy girl: It's clearly been a long time coming, and I'm glad she was able to talk to someone. Alyssa Milano knocked that scene out of the park and I can't imagine how hard that must have been for her to film considering she's actually pregnant. I hope Savi will be able to talk to her friends or Dom or Joss about the loss soon so she doesn't have to carry this burden alone.
PRETTY LITTLE LIARS, "Surfing the Aftershocks", June 24, 2014, Actors: Lucy Hale, Ian Harding
The Scene: Aria confesses to Ezra that she killed Shana
Virginia Fontana: The scene near the end with Aria confessing to Ezra that she killed Shana. This was quite an intense and suspenseful place to leave these two until next week!
TEEN WOLF, "The Dark Moon", June 23, 2014, Actors: Ian Nelson, Dylan O'Brien and more
The Scene: The reveal of Young Derek
Justyna Kubica: Teen Wolf is back! Good timing too, I have to say. Even though it wasn't the best premiere, it was still a good, entertaining episode with at least a few memorable scenes. For me, Malia turned out to be a real scene-stealer (just like Stiles usually does) so her interactions with the rest of the cast were probably my favorite bits of the hour, especially her talk with Stiles in the car. “I would never leave without you. Them - I would leave.” Still laughing after this one. But, I figured I'm gonna choose the most shocking part of the episode here, Derek twist at the end because it's not really easy to surprise me and this ending I honestly did not see coming. Have no idea where it's going but I think this storyline has the potential to be great (hopefully won't last too long though, I miss Tyler!) and I'm excited what's gonna happen next. Kudos!
Klutzy girl: The reveal of de-aged!Derek. De-aging is one of my favorite fic tropes and I never expected it to be canon in any show. Definitely looking forward to seeing what they do with this storyline.
THE LEGEND OF KORRA, "Rebirth", June 27, 2014
The Scene: Zuko shows up
Pablozky21: The whole premiere (3 episodes in 1 night!) was pretty standout and a much better start than Book 2, so it's hard to choose a single moment, but among all the great ones I had to go with Zuko showing up at the end of episode 2. As a fan of both The Last Airbender and The Legend of Korra, every moment when the latter makes any reference to the former is just glory. Getting to see Zuko again and knowing that he will play a key role this season got me really excited. I can't wait to see more episodes and how it plays out. Also, this guy rides a dragon. How more awesome can it get?
THE NIGHT SHIFT, "Storm Watch", June 24, 2014, Actors: Eoin Macken and more
The Scene: The opening scene
Jimmy Ryan: I'm giving The Night Shift a nod this week for its terrific opening scene. It was a 3 minute 45 second long take, and involved a good dozen speaking cast members and another dozen extras. It flowed beautifully and was executed flawlessly. Congrats to The Night Shift cast and crew for pulling it off!
TRUE BLOOD, "Jesus Gonna Be Here", June 22, 2014, Actors: Rutina Wesley, Adina Porter
The Scene: Tara's off screen death
Darth Locke: Tara allegedly was killed by Hep-V Vamps off screen. Although I truthfully don't buy this for many reasons, I think one way or another we will see Tara again and her story line is not finished, but I give the writers credit for giving fans something major to talk about on the first episode of the final season.
TYRANT, "Pilot", June 24, 2014, Actors: Adam Rayner and more, The Scene: Bassam's Final Flashback
Darth Locke: Barry/Bassam Final Flashback - Young Barry gets out of the vehicle and does what his older brother Jamal couldn't, assassinate the enemy execution style. Really liked the pilot. Thought it has a lot of potential, was well filmed, and looking forward to another interesting sociological/military/political & family series from the people behind Homeland and by extension 24.
Also picked by Sandi and Genevieve Taylor

It was an absolutely insane week for me so it seems like I have to catch up with almost everything.
ReplyDeleteAlso, after Jimmy Ryan's comment I think I need to finally check out The Night Shift, liked I planned weeks ago ;) Thanks.
As for my honorable mentions:
Teen Wolf - Malia and Stiles talk in the car, Stiles refuses to leave his car and many other little moments
24: LAD - Jack tells everyone Heller's alive & Jack fights Margot
Continuum - No idea which scene. The Alec vs. Alec confrontation and the aftermath probably. Really couldn't choose.
Next week I'll probably have more to add as Extant and Under The Dome are about to premiere, but you can surely count on me choosing a scene from Korra every week; so far the season looks awesome!
ReplyDeleteIt's already on my to-watch list :) Heard so many good things that I want to see it for myself. Thanks!
ReplyDeleteBeauty and the beast j'aime
ReplyDeleteMy vote goes to my favorite couple ~ Beauty and the Beast i♥
ReplyDeleteShoutout to 24 ~ first time ever I found someone being thrown out the window hysterically funny. First Red Wedding now this ~ she can't catch a a break.
On the List: The Beauty and the Beast and Girl Meets World scenes mentioned.
ReplyDeleteOff the List:
Chasing Life - April cries and talks about what Gerald meant to her (very emotionally strong and touching)
Dominion - Hard to choose, I'll go with Arikta's ultimatum to Wheele and the scene where Michael and Gabriel talk.
Honorable Mentions - Alex's flashback/Jeep's funeral, Michael tells Alex Gabriel knows about him, and Michael asks Riesen for advice.
Haha Yeah I didn't think Vincent would be the type to talk to fish. :P
ReplyDeleteLove BATB
ReplyDeleteEnlisted's was the scene of the season. It so beautifully bookended the show, starting and ending with the wonderfully quirky and heartwarming Hands on Heads.
ReplyDeleteIt's definitely one of my favorites. So beautifully done!
ReplyDeleteAll I watched last week was Falling Skies, so i choose the scene where Tom escapes and disguises himself as The Ghost so he can spy.
ReplyDeleteThe Night Shift is turning out a lot better than I thought. The cast is really good, good chemistry between some of them too. It's an easy show to watch and follow, which makes it ideal for a busy schedule ;-)
ReplyDeleteRight? It has the perfect mix between the romance of Grey's Anatomy and the urgency of E.R.
ReplyDeleteI'm in love with it!!!
Rizzoli and Isles.
ReplyDeleteRizzoli and Isles : I think my heart stopped when I saw Frost. I will also mention Jane's speech and the final scene in which she finally let go. It was an emotional and painful episode.
