A weekly feature in which we're trying to find most compelling, best acted, written, directed and just generally great scenes that we've seen recently.
24: LIVE ANOTHER DAY, "Day 9: 3:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m.", May 26, 2014, Actors: Kiefer Sutherland, Kim Raver, The Scene: Jack and Audrey reunite
Justyna Kubica: Jack Bauer is one of the toughest character on TV. To break him seems impossible. He can be a hard person to like, even though we all root for him to win in the end. But I’m so glad to see our hero back in action. It’s been a long time and now it feels like the good old times again. So why this scene exactly? Jack has built such a strong wall around him, so to see it crumble down like that, the second he sees his lost love after so many years, is an incredibly powerful moment. He’s so good when it comes to controlling his emotions which makes this rare exception feel even more significant. Two broken souls meet again and we can feel their sadness, pain, their longing… The actors are especially impressive in this scene. Both Kiefer Sutherland and Kim Raver did a truly wonderful job. Their performances were spot on. I’m really happy I finally caught up with the new season. It’s absolutely great and I can’t wait to see what’s next. Kudos! Also picked by Bradley Adams, Alex Zhora and Sharon Seymour
FAKING IT, "Three to Tango", May 27, 2014, Actors: Rita Volk, Katie Stevens, Gregg Sulkin
The Scene: The threesome
Jamie Coudeville: Amy has been doubting what she should do about her feelings for Karma these last few episodes, but in this episode she finally took charge. She wasn't about to let Liam win. I hope she comes clean to Karma about her feelings soon.
FARGO, "Who Shaves the Barber?", May 27, 2014, Actors: Billy Bob Thornton and more
The Scene: Malvo takes out an entire building
DarkUFO: Uniquely filmed as all you see is his progression through the building from outside by the camera moving via the walls and windows. Also picked by Max Conte, Darth Locke and Sharon Seymour
IN THE FLESH, "Episode 4", May 25, 2014, Actors: Luke Newberry, Emmett J Scanlan and more
The Scene: Kieren's story of how he Rose
Sandi wich: It's about time Kieren bit back at those against the PDS Sufferers. It's a shame it had to happen around the family dinner table, but if they are going to let a guest go into details of how he killed Rabids, then it's to be expected that their son is going to retaliate with details of how his insatiable hunger drove him when he was in his zombie state. Simon's surprise at Kieren being the First to Rise was also interesting, it showed that he had genuine feelings for him beyond just leading him on like we had assumed he could of be doing. What happens now this knowledge is out in the open makes for a very interesting next episode!
LOUIE, "Elevator Part 4&5", May 26, 2014, Actors: Louis C.K. and more, The Scene: Flashback to young Louie and his wife when they decide to get divorced (picked by Max Conte)
MAD MEN, "Waterloo", May 25, 2014, Actors: John Slattery, Jon Hamm and more
The Scenes: The end scene & Don and Peggy talk about the presentation to Burger Chef
Darth Locke: Don envisions Burt Cooper singing and dancing to "The Moon Belongs To Everyone/The Best Things In Life Are Free". Mad Men's first half of the final season continues to present the best parts of Mad Men by both going back to things from previous seasons, but also at times being so beautifully surreal. Can't wait untill next year to see how it ends and if "time" will play a part. I chose this scene, because it greatly reflects the life and times of Bert Cooper being a by product of the Great Depression.
Max Conte: Wish I could pick an entire episode; they had one perfect scene after another. I'll go with the final few moments where Roger tells the partners about McCann Erikson's offer to buy the company & then Don sees recently deceased Bert Cooper singing "The best things in life are free".
Diana mack: Amazing episode. I'd pick the last scene as well. Bye bye Bert, you'll be missing us!
Tonya Papanikolas: Don tells Peggy he wants her to make the presentation to Burger Chef. I thought this scene was really significant because it showed that Don thought about someone else before himself. He was thinking of Peggy and how if he got fired, she would have nothing left from the account. So he offered to let her present instead of him. I thought that marked a significant selflessness on his part and forethought. Also it paved the way for Peggy to shine and feel like she wasn't always under Don's thumb. I liked that Don was the one who gave her the news himself. Don and Peggy have a contentious relationship but this marked a nice turning point for them so that Peggy can potentially let the hostility toward Don go, a hostility based on always comparing herself and how she is treated to him. I was happy to see Don thinking of Peggy and making a sincere overture to her after the animosity/haughtiness she's showed him recently. And I loved that Peggy was in her bathrobe with her hair in curlers, vulnerable. Great scene among many standouts this week. Also picked by Sharon Seymour
ORPHAN BLACK, "Knowledge of Causes, and Secret Motion of Things", May 31, 2014, Actors: Tatiana Maslany, Matt Frewer, Kristian Bruun, The Scenes: Donny kills Dr. Leekie & Rachel lets Leekie go
Darth Locke: Donny accidentally kills Dr. Leekie by banging his gun on the steering wheel! Also picked by Samy Bgs
Jamie Coudeville: Rachel lets Leekie go - This week is one of the first times we've ever seen Rachel's softer side. I loved this scene, although I was expecting her to kill him. I hope Rachel starts to see the light soon
THE 100, "The Calm", May 28, 2014, Actors: Eliza Taylor, Christopher Larkin and more
The Scenes: Clarke kills the grounder & The end scene
Jamie Coudeville: Clarke kills the grounder - This took me completely off guard but I love it. I hope she gets more bad ass scenes in the remaining episodes.
Daniel van der Veer: This episode ended in several cliffhangers. What happens to Finn after the death of the Grounder girl? Where is Monty and what was it that he stumbled upon? Will Clarke be recaptured or will she be rescued? While we sadly have to wait a week for all these answers, I believed it was a great scene! I thought it was really suspenseful and the darkness in the woods added more of that thrilling feeling.

Not a long article this week. I only picked one scene, but my honorable mentions go to the episodes of The 100, Believe, Melissa and Joey & Orphan Black. Could not decide on the specific moments.
ReplyDeleteHopefully the Summer shows will be starting shortly :)
ReplyDeleteDonnie fails basic gun safety,
ReplyDeleteRachel lets Leekie go,
Vic gets "molested by elves",
Angie's reaction to family day being too much for Vic,
Sarah as Alison as Donnie,
Donnie's cluelessness at seeing Sarah and Alison together,
Sarah and Alison in front of the mirror (seriously, how did they film that?),
Kira sacrficing another tooth for Cosima,
Alison explaining why she can't go to prison,
Cosima telling Delphine exactly whose lab it is
- Orphan Black
It's impossible not to love this show. last night was insane.
ReplyDeleteThat scene where Clarke kills the grounder was so well done. They're really stepping things up quickly
ReplyDeleteThey really are and I believe the finale is going to take us to a place a network show has never done. So excited. This show just does not slow down.
ReplyDeleteMy favourites scenes are mostly from TV movies this week.
ReplyDeleteFirstly The Normal Heart. It made me sob and cry in so many scenes: I loved when Julia Roberts' character tells her story of polio over dinner. I loved everything with Matt Bomer, I really hope he gets nominated for his performance because it was truly touching. I really liked Jim Parsons speech at the end too. But if I had to pick a fave it would be the "food fight" between Matt Bomer and Mark Ruffalo's characters. It was so heartbreaking and sad, I started crying like a baby.
Another TV movie I quite enjoyed was "Petals on the Wind". It was obviously nothing compared to "The Normal Heart" but it's a Lifetime movie, you know what you're walking into and adjust your expectations accordingly. I think they managed to keep the dark tone of the first movie and make you root for Cathy and Christopher even if you know what they are doing is wrong. I really liked their first kiss together, you could tell they didn't want to do it but they couldn't hold it anymore.
From regular TV shows I really liked John and Cotton interrogating the witch in Salem (for the first time they really got a taste of what they are up against, so far it was mostly theoretical), Rachel letting Leekie go (so unexpected from her, and Tatiana did a fantastic job in that scene).
And James' scenes in "A Place to Call Home" (most underrated TV show ever, btw). I was so heartbroken during his aversion therapy scene, it was so sad.
Cheers, as always!
ReplyDeleteIf only we could have included screener scenes huh ;) lol
And thank you, as always :)
ReplyDeleteOut of curiosity, the scenes from which pilots would you pick? ;)
I didn't have a chance to see any of the TV movies you mentioned above but I heard so many good things, especially about The Normal Heart. I have no doubts that it was a brilliant movie and the cast did a spectacular job. Thanks for sharing your thoughts with us :)
ReplyDeleteHmmm, there was one stunt in Scorpion that would definitely have made the list! Then it would have been a toss up between the last scene from either Stalker or The Flash I think for the third choice. lol.
ReplyDeleteYeah, I really enjoyed Scorpion. Unfortunately I'm so busy (and sick again!) that I still didn't have a chance to watch Stalker and The Flash. Both are on my need-to-watch-soon list :)
ReplyDeleteAhh, you probably know which stunt I am talking about then, it's the obvious, harebrained, one ;)
ReplyDeleteUgh, sorry to hear you are sick again hun, you are doing too much atm :( But hey, it's June now, so not too much further to go, hang on in there <3
Clarke kills the grounder, No doubt one of the best scenes I've seen this season, not just this week.
ReplyDeleteEliza Taylor was terrifying.
Fargo: I loved the Malvo scene but my favourite moment was a quieter scene with Molly and Mr Wrench, kind of broke my heart
ReplyDeleteIn The Flesh: Yes the story of how Kieren rose was brilliantly acted
24: Jack and Audrey, I didn't think I cared that much for them as a couple anymore but that scene was beautifully acted. A really great moment.
Yes to The Normal Heart, everyone was brilliant in it even actors I didn't know had it in them like the Taylor Kitch scene at the hospital with the mother, that completely broke me. Ruffalo and Bomer deserve all the awards coming their way. Jim Parsons memorial speech killed me. Great movie hope more people catch it.
ReplyDeleteBelieve: The scenes after the bomb goes off.
ReplyDeleteI cannot think of anything else. Haven't seen much this week. Still have yet to watch Crossbones.
