Rookie Blue - Wanting - Review

Jun 10, 2014

Tonight’s episode is what McSwarek fans have been “wanting” and more. Sam being reassuring of Andy’s instinct on the job, them being “friendly” and most importantly, the kiss. But we’ll get there later. Save the best for last, am I right?

Why don't you just sit tight and make yourself comfortable.

Duncan Moore. You little shit. Am I allowed to say that? I don’t usually project that much hate on a TV character but after tonight’s episode and watching next week’s promo, he’s on the top of my list. When we first got to meet Duncan, I can understand where he’s coming from, being a rookie and all, he’s bound to make mistakes. I found it charming even. But now I just think he’s seriously not cut out for the job. His incapability of stepping up when needed to made Andy second guess her gut instincts and herself as a TO. If he’s sticking around through the season, he better have some redeeming qualities left that I haven’t seen.

Case of the week was rather intriguing, multiple shootings in the same building. But it was predictable to find out who the shooter was. We saw Steve Peck and Traci working together. That’s always a sight for sore eyes. I’m hoping there will be more of that in the future.

This week Chloe has an itch that needs to be scratched. The only person that’s able to do that is Dov. Chloe and Nick’s friendship is one of my favourite things on the show now. At first I was a little hesitant about the two, that there may be more than just a friendship, but after tonight’s episode I am fully supportive of them being best buds.

Chris is heading down a really dark path. This is a slippery slope that’s only going to get worse. Let’s all form a prayer circle for Chris Diaz. He can spiral, I’ll allow it, but being a cop and all, taking drugs can really jeopardize his career.

Please don't cry. I hate it when you cry.

As if Gail hasn’t got enough suffering and heart ache after all she’s been through. She came across a one of the victims at the scene, but unfortunately she did not make it. Gail had trouble finding out the victim’s name and which apartment she lived in, so being a kind hearted person Gail is (although she doesn’t let people see that side of her), she goes back to the crime scene to look for keys or something that might help her narrow her search for the victim’s identity. What Gail wasn’t expecting, was a girl appearing at the scene looking for her mom. Gail puts two and two together and breaks in front of the poor girl. I read an interview that a case will affect Gail deeply both on the job and at home. If this is it, I wouldn’t be surprised it involves children. We all know Gail always had a soft spot for kids. Although I love Gail and only wishes for happiness in her life, I’m really excited and intrigued to see how this affects Gail's life. Also, Holly is not back this week. But I’m optimistic she’ll be back.

Even Traci's not buying the whole "friends" thing.

I know a lot of you have been “wanting” this kiss for a really long time and McSwarek fans finally got it tonight! At the beginning of the episode we saw Andy and Traci talking about her relationship with Sam. We all know Andy and Sam won’t be able to be friends for long. Andy’s been making a list of pros and cons, using her mind rather than her guts to decide whether or not they should still be friends or something more. I know I’m treading on thin ice over here. In the beginning of the season, I really wanted Andy to figure out what she wants in her life, have some alone time, focus on her career. Yes, she’s been doing all of that, but what bothers me is that why bother doing that, wasting time when all signs point to Andy going back to Sam? Whenever she’s in the same room as Sam you can clearly see their connection. All the flirting doesn’t help either. We all know that McSwarek is inevitable, a force to be reckon with. I think that the reason the writers keep dragging out this storyline is for the sake of teasing the fans and it needs to stop. They need better material than that. All these beating around the bush can be avoided. If the writers want them to be together, then be together and not try to make Andy look like she has a choice when clearly her heart is already telling her to be with Sam. I’m all for McSwarek, believe me, but I can make do with them working professionally without all the googly eyes every time they’re in a room together.

It's what makes you who you are.

So Sam drove Andy home and they had a conversation about Andy’s undying faith in people. Sam’s speech was rather touching and Andy was clearly touched, because they shared a kiss. I’ll admit I did melt a little.

I don’t know if it’s because we’re already in the fifth season and the writers are stretched too thin, but after the way they handled Andy and Nick’s breakup, I have lost a bit of faith in the writers. So dear writers, please prove me wrong. I’m glad this season is 22 episodes long.

I’ve been scrolling through social media and I know fans think this is one of the best episodes in the season so far. I don’t disagree, but I feel like the writers could do even better.

I’m excited to see Chris and Gail’s storyline this season and next week’s episode seems really intense. Let me know if you guys share the same thoughts with me or you just plain disagree, which is fine too.

  3. Great review! I was rooting for Duncan until this episode, seriously he didn't even have the guts to man up and tell Andy that he got cold feet. He was a complete ass in this episode and based on the promo for next week it only gets worse. I feel bad for Andy but I feel she did all she could do, its like Oliver said this job is not for everyone and I'm just glad Andy and that little boy were not injured because of Duncan.

I felt for Gail in this episode, like you said she does not show this side of her character often but my heart went out to her when she broke down seeing the daughter of the victim who died. Heartbreaking.

Why are they doing this to Chris?? I was shocked to see him going down this path but I am hoping it does not end up costing him his career. I would hate to see that happen but I am intrigued to see where this is going. I like that this season the writers are exploring more about the hardships cops face on the job.

Couldn't agree more about Andy and Sam, I love them and its obvious they are end game so the writers should not go for the tease.

  8. disagree with your review. The writers are making an amazing job and I love what they're doing with McSwarek and all the others.. they have kept things pretty realistic so far.

  9. Is it wrong that I am kind of excited by this Chris doing drugs and going dark storyline? I don't want him to lose his job but it's nice to see him actually get some sort of storyline and struggle with where he is in life at this point. The shows focus so often is Andy or Andy and her love life that we forget all the crazy stuff some of the others are going through. I mean Chris thought he had a son, had a decent life with his little boy and then found he was living a complete lie by the mother of the boy and now he is alone and lost. As much as I don't want him to be fired I am kind of glad the writers went there because it is not uncommon for people in authority positions and stress filled jobs like police officers to succumb to addiction to escape. I like it even more that they are making Chris, the dare I say Mr Goody two shoes big hearted gentle cop the one going through this dark time instead of one of the more rebellious, spunky characters go even darker (which is what most shows typically do).

I love taht they r not rushing sam and andy and slowly letting them work there way back it makes it all that much better! Sam is definatley changed and it's amazing, they really will make it work this time and wanting was best episode so far, love it all!

  12. I agree. I'm kind of interested and excited to see what they do with it. My only disappointment at this point is that it seems like a lot of the build-up was skipped. We have to just imagine the mental state that pushed him to first turn in this direction. All we saw was him flirting with the coke-head witness from the pawn shop. And now it looks like boom we'll check back in with him already pretty sucked into an addiction problem. I think that might make it hard to make it as compelling or for us to be fully drawn into his story. But I'll reserve judgment for now and see whether they can pull it off. It's so hard with this big cast to fully serve all the characters' story lines, so I cut the writers some slack.

  13. Wow.. Duncan turned out to be a complete douche! Loved the storyline, I imagine that many cops turn out not to be cut out for the job. But Duncan turning on Andy...grrr, hopefully he gets what's coming to him.
Gail was fantastic this episode - she is so snarky in an absolutely perfect way.
Chloe, Dov and Nick made me laugh out loud!!! :)
    Chris - this looks interesting
    Yup, great episode.

I have this theory he is a plant set up by the Inspector to destroy 15 Division......and this way the inspector take down the division one by one.
