After last week's phenomenal return of Falling Skies, episode 4.02, entitled "The Eye", brings a number of Falling Skies character reunions. While you can expect the majority of the Second Massachusetts to remain split, here's a sneak peek on a number of things to expect in this episode.
Ghost is like Batman
Towards the end of the season premiere, it was really clear that Ghost would serve as "a silent guardian and a watchful protector" (The Dark Knight) much in the same way that Batman does in Gotham. As such, the people of the small ghetto rally behind the idea that Ghost can be anyone willing to stand up for what is right.
Don't Get Too Comfortable
As I said before, this episode features a number of character reunions. This is made possible only by a rather large misstep by the Espheni. Rather than continue to keep Weaver locked up along with Tom, they decide (for some reason) to let them all out in order to search for Ghost. This is just one example of a number of actions by the Espheni in this episode that I found to be not only completely misguided, but downright dumb and convenient for writers.
Anne is Merciless
Due to Moon Bloodgood's pregnancy last year, season three of Falling Skies did not see a whole of action from Dr. Anne Glass, but this season Dr. Glass is graduating from Dr. Alien Mama to Dr. Alien Killer. In her search for her family, expect Anne to be not only ruthless with her enemy, but also with her own militia. In one specific sequence of episode two, Anne willfully chooses to put her lust for blood above the well being of her own troops.
Lourdes is Even Weirder Without the Alien Eye Worms
In my first review of this season, I talked about the excellent job that the show had done with the oddly religious undertones in terms of Lexi's compound. In the second episode, expect these undertones to become more than just undertones. Lexi's people look to her like a God. Anyone that doesn't buy in to her holiness is a "non-believer" and this includes Lexi's family. At the same time, Lexi is young (like seriously really young) and in many ways is unsure of herself as a leader. As a result, she is extremely vulnerable to people like Lourdes who want to control her. I'm looking forward to seeing how Lexi's growing knowledge of the world and people changes her character this season. Personally, I'd like to see her put Lourdes in her place, but that's for another episode. Also, for anyone who thought that Maggie was just buying into Lexi's holiness a little too quickly, let's just say that Matt isn't the only one who is forced to openly conform, but inwardly question his new environment.
A Leopard Can't Changes His Spots
If anything has remained constant over the entirety of Falling Skies history, it is Pope. Selfish, uncaring, and always looking for whatever he can add to his stash (reminds me a little of Sawyer from Lost in that way) John Pope doesn't seem to care about anything, but himself. In this episode, viewers will get to see Pope reunite with his beloved friend (just kidding, these two literally hate each other) Daniel Weaver. I don't want to say too much, but in Falling Skies fashion, a random discovery in this episode could yield very important information about how to move forward with a defensive strategy against the Espheni.
Verdict
Overall, I found this to be a fun and, at times, exciting episode of Falling Skies. I questioned the Espheni plan to the point of implausibility at times, but because of the fast pace of the episode I was able to see past it. Falling Skies has definitely had better episodes, but it's enough to keep the plot moving and viewers interested.
