24: Live Another Day – 7:00 PM – 8:00 PM – Review: “A Mixed Bag”

I am livid. I’m so angry that I cannot fathom the words to describe it further. Anyone who knows how much I dislike season 7 just for the pure concept of bringing Tony back from the dead will get a sense of how angry I am right now.

I said in my review last week that I love when 24 does emotional send-offs. It’s one of the greatest aspects of the show. What I loathe is the fact that almost the entirety of last week’s episode has just been rendered null and void. What this fake-out shows me is that the writers lack balls. They lack the balls to actually go through with killing a major character. On a show that is memorable for killing off major characters on a regular basis, this is a terrible misstep in the show’s progression.

What was interesting was to see how it was done. Which is, to say, with very little explanation. So, Chloe hacked into the drone feed and put it on a loop. But Heller didn’t know this. Was Jack shouting at him? How did he get off the pitch so quickly? Was this him (see picture) leaving the pitch? There was so little explanation about it. At least when Tony’s death was faked (both times) they explained how he survived.

Luckily, so little time was spent on Heller and so much time was spent with exhilarating story, I mostly forgot about Heller. There was an awful lot going on, particularly for the first half hour.

The firefight between Kate/Eric and Margot’s people was fantastic, as was seeing Jack covertly make his way into the building. I loved it when Jack abseiled down the building in order to get into Margot’s room. It was even more fantastic when he threw her out of the window. Margot had it coming, and it was great that she finally met her demise.

Very reminiscent of 24 of old, the terror threat has been averted with hours to go in the show (15, in fact). And so, the secondary storyline moves firmly into the spotlight as the primary story. Steve Navarro was finally uncovered (by someone who isn’t then murdered by an assassin), and it’s clear that Adrian’s acquisition of the override device from Navarro is going to be front and centre for the remaining three episodes.

  • I actually watched this promo and so was spoiled about it. However, I did also watch it before I had finished my review of last week’s episode, which made it especially tough to write.
  • I don’t remember having said it in any review yet, but Sean Callery is a genius. Every possible award that he could win, he needs to win.
  • How long until Jack and Audrey hook up again?
  • Chloe, what the hell are you doing going with Adrian?
  • RIP Jordan.
  • How exactly does Jack have a contact in the CIA when he’s been hunted by the government for the last 4 years?

Excluding Heller being alive, this was a fantastic episode that I really enjoyed (far more than I expected to having been spoiled about Heller). I’m really looking forward to seeing where the show goes in the final three hours.

  1. This was a great episode and Heller being alive did not bother me one bit ( having watched 24 from the beginning year it was nice not to have to say goodbye to yet another someone - believe me, the really dead characters have far outweighed the not so really dead characters in this long running series). But with 3 episodes left anyone could still die, including even Heller. So do not be livid, just enjoy the ride and be happy we have the chance to have 24 back with us , even if it is ( or is not) only for one 12 episode go round.

  2. Bradley, I'm not understanding how you could write that glowing review about Heller's death when (as I understand it) you knew from the Canal Fox promo that he wasn't. I can understand how it would have been hard to write around, though.

  3. I'm not angry Heller being alive. This episode was great actually.

  4. It was horrible. Trying to go on about how great the episode was for being a Heller send off, knowing full well that he was alive? Not fun.

  5. I'm angry that it basically ruins the previous episode. That episode needed to end with Heller's death to fully warrant the emotional build up. The fact that it didn't makes the episode far less impactful.

  6. Take a breath! I actually speculated that Jack had faked Heller's death last week. Two clues for me: (1) Jack & Chloe failing to foil the drones with time left before impact--and us not hearing them discuss a Plan B. Jack always has a Plan B. (2) The real giveaway it was a Fake Death: no silent clock at the end. Several other websites picked up on this last week, too.

Now, to what we agree on: this was a fantastic episode. The shoot-out with Jack, Kate & Eric's team against the terrorist at Margot's finale hideout was very well staged. Lighting, action, camera movement/angles all worked.

Of course the Evening Highlight was Jack tossing Margot (hands tied?) out of the window to her death--beside her son, who Jack had also tossed to his death from the same window only minutes before. That Margot was not a physical threat to Jack when he killed her, is clearly a sign that not only Jack--but TV audiences--have a questionable Moral Compass. Indeed, what's more immoral: throwing an unarmed, non-combative woman to her death, or launching drone attacks that may kill innocents?

  7. I thought it was refreshing for Heller to survive. I'm glad Jack had something up his sleeve and something actually worked out for once. Logistically it seems like a stretch to pull that off.

So did Heller actually resign? I know he left a letter prior to leaving with Jack maybe that's a loose end that, combined with Mark's forgery, will cause some interesting situations later on.

We've seen this from Jack recently. He's starting to disregard protocol and decorum. You kind of got a sense of that with his rampage at the end of season 8 and you've seen streaks of it this season. The character's been there so many times that he's getting tired of dealing with the technicalities.

It's not like he went into a grocery store and popped some random lady. She killed soldiers, killed people at the hospital (likely), and was willing to take out a major transportation hub packed with people. I don't think it's completely unjustified to toss her out the window.

  8. The writers are hiting that Chloe might die by the end of the season. Don't know if it's a good thing or not.

  9. I think he'll adjust his resignation until he returns to the US and resign then.

  10. I don't mind a major character like Heller being killed-off. What did bother me was, if Heller were really killed, the PR of giving the terrorists a public victory from forcing us to capitulate to terrorist extortion. I wrote elsewhere:
I'm glad he will live . I like what the producers did -- they gave us two honest dramatic treats/twists: episode 8 where Heller surprisingly and honestly goes about sacrificing himself to save London, and episode 9 where Jack surprisingly and honestly takes matters into his own hands to hit a home run -- save Heller and defeat the terrorists.

I was always hoping Heller would live because I didn't like the idea of the US submitting to terrorist extortion coercion. I didn't like the idea of giving terrorists an embarrassing public victory like that. I thought it would encourage more kidnapping, extortion, etc.

    Good job "24."

  11. Hmm. Interesting view point. Hadn't really considered that because Heller had handed in his resignation, so technically...But yeah.
