The current Broadcast TV season is almost done, both all the renewals, cancellations and series orders already made. During the way there were some decisions made by network executives that felt truly shocking or surprising to many of us. We vented our anger, showed our surprise or "raged". Vote in the pools below to share which decisions felt most surprsing to you and then discuss in the comments sections.
For sure Beauty and The Beast, maybe it has a loyal following, but honestly it's such a disappointing show at this point :/
ReplyDeleteAs for cancellations, I'm just bitter about Community.
I'm bitter about Revolution being cancelled so most surprising to me.
ReplyDeleteunexpected renewal- the mentalist
ReplyDeleteshocking cancellation- suburgatory
unexpected pickup- jane the virgin
another category- show that i thought would've been picked up but wasn't- clementine
I'm with you there on Jane the Virgin, the title is just...and after reading the description I think it looks ridiculous.
ReplyDeleteI thought about the category, but that'd probably be personal taste i.e. which show I wanted to get picked-up but didn't.
ReplyDeleteShocking renewal is BATB, my only guess is CW didn't want to handle hashtags being thrown at them ;)
ReplyDeleteShocking cancellation is Suburgatory because most sites seem convinced it would be back even if it was just a mid-season 13 ep season again.
Unexpected series order, Heroes: Reborn. Like seriously NBC I thought you weren't the desperate network anymore?
Shocking Renewal - Beauty and the Beast
ReplyDeleteSurprising Cancellation - Community, although I don't even watch the show.
Unexpected Pick-Up - Jane the Virgin. I didn't realize CW was that serious about it.
renawal: beauty and the beast
ReplyDeletecancellation: Revolution
pick-up: Heroes Reborn. I didn't expected to see more of the Heroes. (first two seasons were great, but the third was really really bad.)
Shocking Renewal: Beauty and the Beast
ReplyDeleteShocking Cancellation: Almost HUman
Unexpected pick-up: Jane the Virgin
Show I thought would get picked up: SPN: Bloodlines
Good idea on your 4th category.
ReplyDelete#RelocateRevolution !!
ReplyDeleteMost Shocking Renewal: Beauty and The Beast
ReplyDeleteMost Shocking Cancellation: Almost Human (did better than most of FOXs lineup and got cancelled)
Pick up: Heroes Reborn (since they cancelled the original heroes it suprises my how they take the risk)
unexpected renewal: BATB
ReplyDeleteshocking cancellation: star-crossed
unexpected pickup: jane the virgin
for renewals - definitely batb and the mentalist
ReplyDeletein my coutry we had our own version and it was so bad... the premise was riddiculous and it just went worse... I don't think this one wil be better
ReplyDeleteI would go & burn down CW and how easily they cancelled the SC and now they giving BATB a 3rd chance already. Nothing against BATB, don't watch the show but come on.
ReplyDeleteUnexpected Renewal: The Following, seriously this is still on? and Hannibal, great show but considering the ratings.
ReplyDeleteShocking Cancellation: Almost Human, i also lost Revolution & Believe, but this one hurt the most. Great premise, great chemistry, interesting mythology, i really thought the series would get a second season.
Unexpected Pickup: Heroes Reborn, was very surprised. I hope it's more like season 1, than the others. With Jane The Virgin a close second. WTF! And i was shocked that 24 did a limited series, Jack is back!
Surprising Pass on a Series: Clementine, i was really looking forward to this. Though they would have both been crap (imo), i was surprised that Supernatural: Bloodlines and How I Met Your Dad were passed on, considering the name recognition.
Shocking renewal: BatB
ReplyDeleteShocking cancellation: I love Revolution but I knew it was going to get canceled. All the other were pretty shocking especially Community.
Unexpected series order:
I think the HIMYM backlash may have been the reason for the pass on HIMYD.
ReplyDeleteFresh Off the Boat went with another title "Far East Orlando" during development, if you remember that one.
ReplyDeleteReportedly, "HIMYD" has not been passed on yet!
ReplyDeleteSC-shocking? It was constantly scoring 0.3 and below 1 mil viewership.I get that you loved it,but let's get real.
ReplyDeleteUnexpected renewal: The Big Band Theory
ReplyDeleteUnexpected cancellation: Rake
Unexpected pick-up: The Flash with NCIS: New Orleans in a close second
Just kidding
Renewal: The Mentalist - after all the CBS renewals, then the drama pick-ups and there's only a couple of drama slots open, thought it was dead. BATB didn't surprise me (as much) because of the CW's need to have a bigger CBS Productions presence.
ReplyDeleteCancellation: Almost Human - after seeing TF and all the other ratings disasters on FOX, I figured this was worthy of another 13-episode season
Unexpected: Heroes. Without a doubt after the way it fizzled. I hope they can restore some of its first season glory
still reeling at losing community. and the tomorrow people
ReplyDeleteB&tB and The Mentalist are my shocking renewals. I'm surprised to see the CW renewing a show they didn't want airing in the spring and I'm surprised to see CBS renewing The Mentalist both because they ordered so many new dramas and they are known as a network that doesn't care about giving their viewers closure but suddenly they do care.
ReplyDeleteNone of the cancellation shocked me personally.
Jane is the show that makes me WTF the most, but oh well, this is the CW. Almost every year they pick up at least one show that makes me wonder what they're smoking (Reign, TCD, etc.) Sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't. Guess we'll have to wait and see about Jane.
No doubt that Beauty and The Beast was a shock.
ReplyDeleteAs for cancellations, I was surprised by Surviving Jack. It had a great lead but they hardly aired any shows before pulling the plug.
Shocking renewal: Beauty and the Beast
ReplyDeleteShocking cancelation: Community (don't watch the show though)
Unexpected pickup: Jane the Virgin
Nothing even comes close to Beauty and the Underwear Model. Whatever Pedowitz is smoking, I want some.
ReplyDeleteBeauty and The Beast is my most shocking renewal while I was quite surprised by Community and Revolution's cancellations. I know the ratings were no good but it never have been since a long time ago. So I guess I'm just disappointed. Also Suburgatory's cancellation was unexpected for me.
ReplyDeleteMost unexpected series order are both Heroes, Reborn and Jane the Virgin... I mean, seriously?? :D
Shocking Renewals:BatB( I'm a fan)& Mentalist
ReplyDeleteShocking Pickups:None.I guessed weeks ago CW would pick up Jane -my thinking was Pedowitz said in Jan that CW is almost over saturated with genre and after next season ,they'll move back to family shows and I figured if they cancelled CD(which they did), they'd want a non genre show .
Most Shocking Renewal: BATB
ReplyDeleteIs their any doubt?
Most Surprising Cancellation: Community
I don't watch the show, but I was expecting it to be the HIMYM of the next TV season
Most Unexpected Series Order: Manhattan Love Story
It came out of nowhere. Jane The Virgin at least makes sense with the CWs past (they always order 1 WTF series).
starcrossed should not have been cancelled
ReplyDeleteDoes anyone know what time the ABC schedule will be out?
ReplyDeleteAny time now.
ReplyDeleteokay good thanks
ReplyDeleteI like Beauty and the Beast but I thought for sure it was a goner.
ReplyDeleteCancellation - Probably Community. I never watched but it seemed to be a favorite for the network. I'd say Almost Human but I knew Fox and wasn't expecting it to survive despite doing better than the majority of Fox's show and pretty much equaling The Following, but with more viewers.
Unexpected pick up - not really any because most I'd never heard of until it was announced. I knew about Jane the Virgin but was not surprised because CW had a lot of Sci-fi/supernatural shows picked up so I knew a "normal" one was bound to be added.
Cancellation of Revolution was shocking to me. Just killed me. Very upset.
ReplyDelete- Most Suprising Renewal: The Following.
ReplyDeleteSigh...what potential the show had! The first half of Season 1 was mastefully executed, but then it was all downhill. The only reason Fox would renew it is if Kevin Bacon had already signed a deal for a 3rd season & they would not have wanted to alienate him on account of his star power.
- Most Suprising Cancellation: Community.
Let's be real. Community's glory days were over the moment NBC decided to fire Dan Harmon and resulted in a 4th season that was vastly inferior to the preceding 3 seasons. The Season 5 reboot with Harmon back in charge brought about a marked improvement in quality, and though this season wasn't as top-notch as the first 3 seasons, it still elevated Community back to the top bracket of TV comedies alongside Modern Family, Brooklyn99, Parks and Rec & BBT. Hopefully another network or a streaming service (Hulu, Netflix) gives it another chance.
I would think this is just in the eye of the beholder, what they think about this. Looking at ratings is like looking at opinions of 100 peoples, it doesn't tell you anything at all about true viewership. People in the US have to remember they are not the only ones that matter when it comes to looking at shows popularity.
ReplyDeleteFor me most shocking renewals are: Arrow, The 100, The Vampires Diaries (how is this show still alive?!) + it's spinoff and GLEE (omg). Those shows are so terribly BAD!!! But there are a lot of renewals that I have never even bothered to check out, because their storyline alone sounds just to boring.
Shocking cancellations are: Star-Crossed (what the hell??!!), Dracula and even The Tomorrow People
Don't know any of those shows that are picked up, but would love to see them pick up Ringer and The Secret Circle. Those shows where getting really good by the time they where cancelled.
Worst thing about this system of canceling show at the end of the season is that so many good shows are cancelled with cliffhangers and never get any ending. The viewer gets invested in a show and then gets cut off. It's like if we go to a movie and it would be cut off in the middle for 10 minutes break and then it would be decided if they are going to show the second half. At least let the writers give their stories an ending!!!
This is a horrible system and must be a torture for everybody working on television shows, this endless question of "are we going to keep our jobs or not?!"
Shocking reneewal: all of the above.
ReplyDeleteCancellation: Community
Pick up: Jane the Virgin
Unexpected Renewal: The Mindy Project... and The Goldbergs, although I am happy the 2nd one was renewed
ReplyDeleteUnexpected Cancellation: The Tomorrow People and Revolution... also The Neighbors
Unexpected Pick Ups: Jane The Virgin
Oh how I agree with you on The Following! It had potential and Kevin Bacon but yet, they totally ruined it not far into the first season.
ReplyDeleteoh vicky who isn't :)
ReplyDeleteThey always have sports and the Voice to keep them afloat. Mind you all the main networks are struggling apart from CBS
ReplyDeleteIn what way, shape or form would Jane the Virgin be considered a "family show"? I will agree that it is a non-genre show but definitely not family-friendly...well, I wouldn't let my kids watch it.
ReplyDeleteMost Shocking Renewal - BATB
ReplyDeleteMost Suprising Cancellation - Suburgatory
Most Unexpected Series Order - Heroes: Reborn
So so true!
ReplyDeleteI think your point regarding Hannibal's poor ratings is moot because the sheer quality of the show is an overwhelming validation for it's renewal. While there have been some excellent shows in recent times who have been cancelled prematurely due to poor ratings (Jericho, Pushing Daisies, Firefly, etc to name a few high profile exits), none of them were as well organised/directed/acted/written as Hannibal. Even the superlative Firefly rece
ReplyDeleteDo you have any idea when CW will release it's schedule?
ReplyDeletemost shocking cancellation: the tomorrow people and star-crossed
ReplyDeleteMost shocking renewal: DEFINITELY The Mentalist. Everyone had it pegged as dead and CBS always cancels a veteran. Considering it's ratings are low and CBS ordered quite a large amount of new dramas, it seemed reasonable that it'd be cancelled.
ReplyDeleteMost shocking cancellation: For me, it was Growing Up Fisher. I guess Suburgatory too, but more GUF.
Most shocking pickup: CSI Cyber. I guess I REALLY didn't think CBS would try ANOTHER franchise after they just got through canceling the others and when the home show is performing only well enough for a show that's been around since the 90's. I expect this to work about as well as that Law & Order spinoff that aired a few years back. Remember that?
It's also because Hannibal is mainly financed through international production companies and sold to foreign markets, so the costs are very low for NBC and ratings therefore aren't as important. But I'm just so happy because I love the show.
ReplyDeleteCommunity really shocking because for months there were rumours that a sixth season was pretty much a done deal and that a movie was even in consideration.
ReplyDeleteTomorrow. Today is CBS's turn.
ReplyDeleteMost Surprising Cancellation: Revolution
ReplyDeleteOther: Crisis, Believe
Most Unexpected Series Order?: Heroes: Reborn
Still can't believe they renewed BATB. Well congrats to the fans! The Mentalist I was also surprised for but everybody was making it out to be way more dead than it was. If CBS was going to pick up any of the remaining dramas, it was going to be TM. No way in hell would they hold out The Crazy ones for a second season after such a crappy first, and Hostages and Intelligence were worse of them The Mentalist. But yeah, I figured they're just drop it to TNT or something. Anyway, surprised, but not shocked.
ReplyDeleteMost shocking cancellation: Community, and also Growing Up Fisher. Good show, too bad. I'm excited for Fresh Off The Boat though, which looks similar.
Yep I guess I was beginning to believe in six seasons and a movie...so sad and bitter right now.
ReplyDeleteCommunity was surprising. I mean.... NBC could have gained a little loyalty by giving that sixth season. Make it 10 episodes and give it a late midseason run when other shows finish and have been canceled. I haven't even watched it in a long time and don't care all that much... But a stupid PR move, I feel NBC with all their troubles should at least show they'll finish a few shows now and then.
ReplyDeleteUnexpected... Jane the Virgin because people were so critical, but I am open minded about this one, it sounds like it could be Ugly Betty level funny if done correctly. People were assholes about that one too and guess what, it turned out to be awesome. Can't wait to see all the CWs trailers Thursday and I really hope I'm right about Jane. Also stoked to see the trailer for Messengers.
It is a mystery to me but I think the majority of audiences just want easy TV they can fold their laundry to and don't have to pay much attention to either. I don't know I would find watching CBS shows only to be so damn boring!
ReplyDeleteDamn NBC.
ReplyDeleteUGH!
ReplyDeleteThat would lessen the CW's massive amount of fantasy/ sci-fi lineup though for a while if they were trying to do so ( which I believe they aren't) given it has The 100, The Originals, Arrow, Supernatural, iZombie, The Flash, The Vampire Diaries, Beauty & The Beast (though it'll probably die next year) next year.
ReplyDeleteI suppose that must be it. I dunno, I just like to enjoy TV like I enjoy books and movies, to me TV is a better medium for good storytelling than a movie, and I love TV shows that are challenging in some way. I'm going to film school because I want a career in TV but as stifling as most CBS shows make me feel creatively as a viewer I couldn't imagine willingly participating in making the majority of their shows a reality as a job. Ugh.
ReplyDeleteI think in the end a job is a job no matter how mediocre the CBS shows are, they do keep a lot of people in employment but yeah if I was to be involved in the process myself I would like to think I would strive for originality over blandness!
ReplyDeleteVoted the same way, Beauty, REALLY?? wooden acting, no chemistry that I see.
ReplyDeleteAs much as I enjoy Revolution & Almost Human, it was Community that I went OH NO over. I love the Greendale group.
Come on Jane the Virgin, not something I would want to watch. lol
I hope that Blacklist can hang on being on NBC changing nights and LOOOONNNG BREAK.
ReplyDeleteI really did not think Bloodlines would make it after all the bad comments everywhere about it. It might have had a better chance without the SPN stuck in front of it as it had nothing to do with that series and I thought TPTB was afraid it could not stand on its own. I would have felt much different about it as a stand alone series, and it was much closer to The Originals, just not as good.
ReplyDeleteI watched season 1 of Beauty and the Beast and I really wish I hadn't...it was dull, and I only kept up with it because I don't really like to give up on shows :/
ReplyDeleteAnd me too :( Community was one of the best comedies on air.
Never heard of spn Bloodlines--what channel is it on?
ReplyDeleteyeah, loved Almost Human...
ReplyDeleteBeat me to it. That was my hope, to keep it. Hope for the best, expect the worst.
ReplyDeleteWell if that were true, Abrams' wouldn't of lost 2 series. Yeah some shows with good ratings, get cancelled. But usually it's played itself out (Star Trek: TNG, I know not NBC , just an example), or the star wants to move on. Rating are important, because it's what pays the bills. Hannibal's cost are mitigated by international funds. I wish more of my "cult" shows were.
ReplyDeleteSeveral before it have not.
ReplyDeleteLike Revolution.
ReplyDeleteIt was shown as a back door pilot on the series Supernatural...BAD MOVE.
ReplyDeleteExactly. NBC has been pulling this stunt for about a decade.
ReplyDeleteI agree. the second season just didn't hold up.
ReplyDeleteI heard the second season was better and tried to watch it again but I didn't enjoy the episodes I saw. Great idea, poor execution.
ReplyDeleteI am disappointed about Almost Human being canceled, That show had so much potential in my opinion.
ReplyDeleteCancelation Star-crossed :(
ReplyDeleteHow was that "shocking"?
ReplyDeleteNeither of those can be consider "shocking", with the ratings, they had it coming.
ReplyDeleteI'll join you in the "feeling bitter about 'Community'" camp. Sigh. It'll be sad not seeing it listed in fall previews later this year.
ReplyDeleteBATB is mindless drivel and still got renewed even though it had rock bottom ratings. Just the title Jane the Virgin gives me a migraine. I will miss Star-Crossed and The Tomorrow People, both were very entertaining.
ReplyDelete#StarCrossed I am done with CW, will NEVER watch any of their new shows again, taking candy from a baby
ReplyDeleteAs long as Mindy Project and New Girl are renewed I'm ok
