The Mindy Project - Season 3 - Received only 15-Episode Order from FOX

7 May 2014

While The Mindy Project will be back for a third season, fans might not get as many episodes as they’re used to. “I’ve done less this [season],” Reilly says. “We’ve ordered 15 so far.” Reilly thinks some shows can work better in smaller doses: “I think for a contemporary audience, less is more. I think it ends up becoming a really digestible amount where the end is always in sight.”

  1. Sad to hear this, but at least the story won't be dragged out. I'm just glad this show got renewed in the first place :)

  2. Hmm, hear I was thinking that FOX wanted to renewed it for syndication.

  3. It's actually doing decent compare to the other comedies. It almost beat New Girl last weak, but it ended up tying.

  4. Fox is really trying to pissing me off lately!

  5. Normally shows that score 1.0 on a regular basis get cancelled. So people should be VERY happy and thankful for 15 episodes.

  6. Kevin Reilly reduced episode order of Mindy to 15. On the other hand, Sleepy Hollow will be getting 18 episodes next season. I love both shows.

But Kevin, really? Mindy's numbers are in and its finale rose to 1.3 out-rating both GLEE and New Girl. Why not just retire GLEE in the first place. A 0.8 rating, really? Oh well.

  7. Murphy talked about Glee getting a 24(!!!!!!!!!!!!!) episode renewal. I know we should believe when the showrunner says it but I refuse to believe it. And it's Ryan Murphy after all, so.......

  8. Errrrr, an over-rated executive producer? LOL

  9. I'm sure they would love to retire Glee after this season's disastrous ratings but they made a S6 commitment when they renewed it for 2 seasons back at the end of S4. I think if they pulled the show now they would be in a mess with contracts and having to pay severance.

Don't they realize the show has quietly but steadily started outrating their former ratings juggernauts Glee and New Girl??
Ugh. I guess people would say we should be happy it was renewed at its low numbers, but that's not a great concession to make because if those two have full seasons next season, there's NO reason for TMP to not have its, unless Kaling herself requested it (And she didn't, I'm almost certain). This also doesn't bode well for any hope of a season 4 because they'll be nowhere near syndication numbers.
After a great finale (something those other shows haven't been able to/probably won't be able to pull off), this is disappointing to hear.

  11. Argh. FOX is better than this. They made a mistake long ago for keeping X Factor then ricochets right on their face. If they do cancel or reduce it, I wonder how much will it cost FOX. But a 0.8 rating is really awful! When will they come to their senses!

To be fair, I watched several episodes of GLEE before and another I think last season. I was like, what the hell happened with this show? It was good before but now it turned to be your typical melodramatic show. The story is comparable to watching Pokemon. 10 years after and it's the same old f*cking story (sorry Pokemon fans)

  12. Oh its been a mess for ages, I was actually a fan of S1 but really since then its dropped in quality and sometimes I read what is going on in the show and the story is a mess!

Dear Fox be careful next time at picking up shows for 2 seasons!

  13. I agree with all this. FOX deserves all that has happened to them for making horrible decisions. Almost Human is cancelled while it was pulling high 1s while Glee gets renewed for 24 (probably) episodes when it can barely reach a 1.0

  14. Ryan Murphy already confirmed Season 6 of Glee will have 24 episodes.

More recently Scandal's 2nd season had an order of 13eps and then got a full season.

  16. Good point, too! BTW, I love Scandal!!!!! :)

  17. I'll take it! Hopefully there will not be any filler episodes since it's a small order.

  18. Wow. While I do agree less is more sometimes, this series only improves with time. It gets better and better each episode.

  19. To be honest I really think the issue with Glee was losing Cory Monteith. I know Lea Michele is more than capable of holding her own and leading a show but together with Monteith the just made the show so much stronger & I'm not saying that because of the romantic storyline. That combined with the weakness in which the way the writers introduced the new characters and created the NYC storyline, it's just gone downhill. They always planned to have the characters graduate but when they finally got to it I don't believe they did a very good job with the transition of the show. I might catch up eventually but I have no interest or strong desire to at the moment.

  20. Well they don't produce the show, NBC universe does. If Fox owned it then it would be a full year.

  21. So The Mindy Project is the new Cougar Town?

    Season 1 - 24 eps
    Season 2 - 22 eps
    Season 3 - 15 eps

  22. I know that, I meant many NBC gave them a sweet offer to renew the season so they can NBC can get it syndicated.

  23. Mindy Project did actually beat New Girl in both the key demographic and overall viewership for the season finale and deservedly so. I am hoping they bring it back for a full season once they reassess.
