The Mentalist - Episode 6.22 - Blue Bird - Review

NOTE: Please be advised that English is not my first language.

The Mentalist ended its season six with a tagline "True love has found a way." If you remember, Bruno Heller said he wrote "Blue Bird" as a series finale. The whole episode was about love and what are you willing to do to show it. The Mentalist 2.0 has been the journey of Jane and Lisbon, a journey to understand who they really are and what they really want. From the very beginning of the episode, Patrick Jane still asks to Cho - and more to himself - if Lisbon is really leaving. He thinks she knows her well and she won't make such a big move... the truth is, Jane's dening the fact Lisbon is leaving because he'afraid to come face to face with his feelings for her. Despite this, Jane cleverly manages to solve a crime involving young students and come back to the FBI building, ready for another case. Lisbon is forced to postpone her departure when a cold case brings her and Jane to Miami: there's a letter written by the killer and they need to know who wrote it. As the two are the guests in the Blue Bird Inn, Jane is clearly happy to spend some quite time with her "more than friend" Teresa. Just to remind her how great are those two when they work together, a long walk to the beach is the key to solve the cold case. Lisbon is happy she's decrypted the mysterious code on the letter; it's clear she learned from her mastermind (Jane) how a serial killer's mind works.

Like Jane, also Lisbon is living her fairytale when she look at the beautiful room Jane has booked for her - including three amazing dresses. Lisbon is touched by his move, she calls him and thanks him for the kind gesture. Jane answers at the phone like a teenager with a crush on a girl - he's happy, you can read on his face. But the fairytale goes wrong when Lisbon finds out Jane has booked the room one week earlier, so before the letter came to the FBI - this leads Lisbon to the conclusion that Jane wrote the letter, not the killer. Lisbon thinks he's a horrible person because he made everything possible to postpone her departure by letting her stay on a cold murder case. As a 'mature response', Lisbon throws a glass of water in Jane's face - they're acting like two kids who are afraid to tell each other that they're in love. Abbott and Cho have been the watchers for all the time; while Abbott has been pushing hard Jane and Lisbon to talk about their feelings, Cho still hasn't realized what's going on between them. Come on, Cho! You've been working with them for almost 12 years and you've never noticed anything! Lisbon makes the impossible move and prepares to pack up her things to go to the airport. Jane has one last chance to apologize with her, but he fails.

"I just don't want you to leave."
"You don't give a damn about what I want, or need. I am just a convenience for you. You use me. It's all about you. You used a woman's murder Jane, you basically dug her corpse up for this crap! you're so twisted in your own dishonesty you have no idea how to act like a decent human being. No idea."
With those words, Lisbon put Jane in the condition of thinking about who he really is: he's always being a con man, acting like a clown in kinda way, pretending it's ok to stage a play just to solve a murder case. Lisbon feels used: remember in episode 6.09 he made her come in Austin to join the FBI, otherwise he wouldn't have accepted Abbott's condition to work. That's the breaking point when Lisbon decided to call a cab, go to the airport and call Pike to tell him she accepted her proposal - Pike's reaction was awful... what kind of man reacts like that like if he just won a football game? Anything but romantic. Jane thinks he's lost Lisbon forever, until he gets a visit from two lovers - from the cold case - who make Jane opens his eyes: "I was a coward- blind, stupid coward. I was so filled with fear and self-hatred that I destroyed the best thing that ever happened to me. By the time I realized my mistake, it was too late. She was gone." There comes the realization everyone was waiting for - but it can't be easy, right? When the two women Fischer and Cho had interviewed before for the case, Jane does everything he can to manage the situation, because the first rule is: keep calm and text "SOZ" to your boss. Abbott and Cho can arrest the women and release the men, and let Jane go to the airport to stop Lisbon. Poor Cho, he seems to be the voice of that fandom who doesn't want Jane and Lisbon to be together. "They're like brother and sister." But anyone is free to think what they want, right?

In a romantic effort to talk to her (and in a scene that reminds me the series finale of Friends, where Ross did the impossible to stop Rachel from leaving), Jane manages to get abroad the plane where Lisbon is and makes one of the most romantic love declarations: "I forgot how to act like a human being, and I play games, I lie and I trick people to avoid the truth of how I feel. The idea of letting anyone close to me is terrifying for obvious reasons but the truth Teresa is that I can't imagine waking up knowing that I won't see you. The truth is I love you. You can't imagine how good it is to say it out loud and it scares me, but it's the truth of what I feel. [...] I love you, Teresa. And it makes me happy to be able to say that to you. I love her. That woman in B12, I love her." For Jane is a huge step, he's shaken, he's come out of the closet and it scares him being honest; but he's realized he may have lost the woman he loves forever. On the other side, Lisbon has mixed feelings, she's embarassed, she's touched, she cries like she never did before. The old woman next to her is right, every woman in that plane is green with envy. Next morning, we learn Abbott had to persuade TSA to let Jane in custody. There, he receives a surprising visit: Lisbon. She got off the plane and he can't be more happy than that - he even tells her she isn't going to DC anymore, like if he needs to hear that from her. But also Lisbon needs to hear again those words Jane said to her, because last time he told that he loves her (The Crimson Hat, season 4), he pretended he couldn't remember. Back then, it was a different time. Jane had Red John and he needed to get to him, so he couldn't let his true feelings come out. We assume he's been kept what he feels for a very long time. When Jane is about to answer, he leans on Lisbon and kisses her. The quick sweet kisses are seen by the security guard who has to make them stop, and I thought "Come on, man, they've been waiting like 12 years for this!"Then, the frame freezes on their happy faces. Jane stopped being a con man, he took his clown face off and start being a human being by embracing life - the same life Lisbon gave to him when 12 years ago found him a home at the CBI, and the same woman who saved him from the mask he was wearing by showing him his true colors - The Mentalist 2.0 was an explotion of colors in every title.

Does this episode make a perfect series finale too? Have you been waiting for Jane and Lisbon finally get together? Share your comments below, and thanks for reading us, see ya next year with the seventh season of The Mentalist!

  1. Ahhhhh, I absolutely loved this episode! It was so wonderful to watch. The build-up was so fantastic and actually delivered on the pay-off! The scene in the plane was one of the best finale scenes of the year! Simon Baker did a spectacular acting job. His bubbling over emotions were perfect for his situation. It was very gratifying and sweet to finally hear him say I love you.

The only thing I didn't like was that kiss. What was that?! That was a really weak kiss!!! It wasn't romantic enough. After all the time and his big speech, it was quick, sweet kisses like you said. That just didn't fit the situation. It needed a big, sweeping, romantic kiss.

Great review. I loved how you say that Lisbon saved him from the mask he was wearing by showing him his true colors. That is such a great way to put it. And I love how you pointed out how the season was an explosion of colors in every title. I hadn't realized that. How fun. Nice job!

I'm interested to see where they are going to go with the show next season now. It should be interesting.

  2. Perfect episode. I loved how Abbott was helping them get together. Jane's con was good but Lisbon was furious. I'm surprised Cho didn't realize what was going on. I loved the scene on the plane. I cried with them. Them kissing in the detention room was all I could have asked it to be. I jumped up out of my chair and said they are going to kiss. It was awesome. I cried. I wish season 7 was starting right now.

  3. Thanks for reading! Yes, I was surprised too with Cho.. I thought he was the one to push Jane towards Lisbon, instead Abbott revealed to be the shipper number one ahaha the kiss was perfect, and I cried too and before that too - with the declaration.

  4. If the show had ended with this episode, I would have been content with it as a ending. Hell, the whole season works as an ending to the show with its wrap-up of the Red John arc and the exploration of life afterwards.

  5. I was kind of suprised that when Jane said that he couldn't imagine waking up and not seeing Lisbon he didn't say again, to refrence the two years that they were apart. (That makes me think that Jane may have had dreams about Lisbon being with him when he was on the island.) I was also suprised that neither Jane or Lisbon had told the TSA guard to shut up when he was yelling at them to stop kissing.

  6. See, I told you they would have their happy ending ;-)

  7. I never said that I didn't think they could, it was just that my gut was saying something diffrent. (And since at the time my gut had been right on other things, I wasn't going to hedge against it.) Though I am glad that my gut was wrong.

That being said, I still wasn't sure the ending was going to be happy until Lisbon showed up in the TSA interrigation room.

So how do you think they are going to pick up next season?

  8. I was suprised that Cho had the opionion he did. I mean he didn't say anything when Rigsby said how he and Van Pelt thought that Jane and Lisbon would get together in episode 15, and then in episode 17 he said that his head would explode if he tried to think about what Jane thought about Lisbon being with Pike, and then to say that he didn't see what so far everyone the worked with had, except for Fischer she didn't seem to give an opionion on Jane and Lisbon, had me thinking 'huh?'

  9. I really hope they pick up right were they left off in the finale. I think another time jump would deprive us of some interesting scenes between those two.The writers should exploit the opportunity to show us how their long friendship turns into a romantic relationship with all its possibly awkward but still very romantic moments :-)

    What about you?

  10. Fischer thought they had been a couple in episode 6.10 when she asked Lisbon "Have you two ever been involved?" So I think she has an opinion.

  11. Thanks for reading! yes, this episode fits as season finale as well as series finale. Season 3 finale was one of the best of the series.

  12. Thanks for reading Mark! Well the ending scene was kinda funny, they were kissing I mean, I think they were so deep into the kiss that they didn't care about the guard at all. Love is blind :)

  13. I'd be interesting to see what happens next and how Jane and Lisbon will deal with those new feelings.

Great review, Diana. You are really a Jisbon shipper :) I never thought I would cry during the episode, multiple times. I'm really speechless about this episode. I loved the plane scene and the last scene, they were very romantic. "Pike's reaction was awful... what kind of man reacts like that like if he just won a football game?" That is just hilarious :)) See ya next season!

  15. If they are able to use the place where they shot the finale scene again, then I could see them doing what they did with the season six piremire and picking up where they left off. I mean it would be funny to see Abbotts reaction when he goes to pick up Jane and find Lisbon there with him. It would also be funny showing him coming in as the TSA guard is banging on the window toi stop Jane and Lisbon from kissing, I mean if Abbott were to have heard the guard saying that I bet he'd be like 'what has Jane done now.'

If they can't use that place again, then I could see them having a short time jump somewhere from maybe a day or week after to maybe a month or two. I mean if they do decide to do a time Jump I doubt it will be that big of a jump. I mean they could even jump to Jane and Lisbon arriving back in Austin later that day and planning a date and which gets intruptted because Jane and the team caught a case. A time jump seems likely to me since Lisbon had put in for a transfer and then to stop it would take some time, I would imiagine.

  16. I'd like to see if their new relationship helps Jane behave a little bit more, or if Lisbon uses it to try and control him. I mean I could just picture if Jane starts to act out or doing something that Lisbon doesn't like and her saying 'Jane keep this up and you can forget about coming over tonight', or if they feel confortable with living together already, 'You do that Jane and you'll find yourself sleeping on the couch..'

    ReplyDelete
  17. I wouldn't call that an opionion, that was more, she was fishing for answers as to why Jane may have written to her for two years, why with all the stuff Jane has pulled and everything that had happen why Lisbon still worked with him, and probably why Lisbon would have gave up her job in Washington (State) and join the FBI in Austin just because Jane had made working with Lisbon a part of his conditions for work for the FBI, also if maybe, had they been involved, had been the reason Jane made working with Lisbon the top thing on his list of working with the FBI.

  18. A Fischer-Jane-Lisbon love triangle probably didn't work that well to getting Jane and Lisbon together as a Jane-Lisbon-Pike love triangle did. I mean they said that where they ended was were they wanted to end in the summer, so if that was true then it means that their intent was to always get Jane and Lisbon together, so changing the love triangle would mean that they didn't think that a Fischer love triangle would have worked to their goal. (Either that or they saw how fans really didn't want a Fischer based love triangle, when it was hinted that way back before the season started.). Though such a change would explain why Fischer hasn't seem to be the leading female that she was said he would be.

  19. Much as I didn't want to see Lisbon end up with Pike, I'm REALLY glad they abandoned the Fischer plan!

    ReplyDelete
  20. Opinion or example, call it like you want :) i think everyone in the FBI had their opinion about Jane and Lisbon's relationship.

  21. Thanks for reading :)

  22. Your welcome. Your probably right, they probably were deep into the kiss that they probably didn't notice the TSA agent.

The one question I really have from the episode is who was Lisbon refering to when she said that her boyfriend would like the bathrobe? Was she refering to Pike or had she started to think of Jane as her boyfriend.

    ReplyDelete
  23. My guess is a guy who realized that he got exactly what he wanted, which was that he got Lisbon. (I even have to admit that Pike's reaction went beyond what my own reaction would be if I was in his place.)

I wonder though if we will get to see his reaction when Lisbon tells him that she's changed her mind and doesn't want to marry him and isn't going to DC. Since Lisbon's comment seem to hint that she hadn't talked to Pike yet.

    ReplyDelete
  24. Well everone that worked close to them seemed to have a very accurate opionion of their relationship. (Except for Cho, unless he lied to Abbott.) Pike obviously didn't have an accurate opionion. LOL.

    ReplyDelete
  25. I think the Fischer plan wouldn't have worked bceause I find it hard that Jane would have been able to have shown romantic intrest in Fischer yet at the same time be afraid to tell Lisbon how he feels about her.

    ReplyDelete
  26. Pike I think, it was before she realized Jane had planned the whole letter for the case.

    ReplyDelete
  27. I don't think we're going to see Pike on the series... for what I know Pedro Pascal is in GOT, plus The Mentalist is now Jane and Lisbon's relationship. They don't need anyone else.

    ReplyDelete
  28. Cho thinks they're like brother and sister ahahaha I think Pike understood Lisbon has a thing for Jane, otherwise he wouldn't have proposed to her so fast - truth is, he was afraid of loosing her because of Jane.

    ReplyDelete
  29. That's who I was thinking to, since she had been shown up until that point to have been ready to leave and be with him.

I had only wondered because someone on some site had thought that Lisbon when she entered the room had maybe started to realize that Jane had feelings for her.

    ReplyDelete
  30. I could see them bringing back for a scene or two in the season seven priemere, if they plan on picking up right where they left off right after the kiss, but if they are going to do any type of time jump (wether short or big) then I agree, he probably won't be seen again.

That being said just because Pascal is on GOT doesn't mean that they couldn't use him for a scene or two, I mean if I remember correctly the guy who plays Abboytt was finishing up another show when he started on the show. Not to mention on The Big Bang Theory, the woman who plays Lenoards mother also has a major part on another CBS show.

    ReplyDelete
  31. I still think Pike proposing had to do with overconfidence that she would have said yes, (I mean even though I wouldn't have proposed to her right then in there, if it were me and the woman I was in love with had said yes to moving with me, I would have thought that not only did she not have any real feelings for anyone else, but that she wanted a future with me that would possibly mean marriage.)

I mean remember he left her alone to have told Jane that she was leaving, if he was really afraid of losing her to Jane then I would think he would have wanted to be with her when she told Jane. Besides Jane didn't even know that she was leaving, so i would find it hard that Jane heard Pike proposing but didn't hear Lisbon say that she would move with him.

  32. Awesome review...IMO "...saved him from the mask he was wearing by showing him his true colors," is the best description of the episode if not the whole series...it has been a treat watching Lisbon slowly peeling back his layers of emotional self-protection and that plane scene should have been tacky on paper, but Simon Baker's acting made it my favorite scene of any show this season, literally...i alternately wanted to hug him for finally opening up and shake him for waiting so dang long lol....it has been a while since a show made me cry but dang it how could you not?

And Cho, who next to Jane is my favorite character on this show, was hilarious...i consider him second only to Jane when it comes to brains but my goodness how did he NOT see?!?! Even Abbott was like, "Really? You don't know why?" i've never liked Abbott but i loved him in this episode when he didn't wanna give Jane his keys but when he realized why Jane wanted them, he tossed them over without hesitation, and i may be mistaken, but i believe he even grinned when he did:) Agent Abbott, there is hope for you yet:)

    ReplyDelete
  33. Thanks for the review, Diana. Did you or anyone else catch what Jane says in the hotel room scene right before he rushes off to the airport. "And blondie is the .... I suspect."

    ReplyDelete
  34. It's been several days now and part of me still can't believe it actually happened (despite watching the kiss over and over). This episode was wonderful.
I liked your comment on the colors thing; now that Red John is finally out of the way, Jane is finally rediscovering the colors of life, and now he has Lisbon to share that with him. Very sweet. :)

    ReplyDelete
  35. Thanks for reading! I think he basically said that the two women are the killers, and the two men are innocent.

    ReplyDelete
  36. "... is an embezzler, I suspect. "

    ReplyDelete
  37. Jane didn't hear the proposal of course, but to me THAT proposal was made on purpose.

    ReplyDelete
  38. I'm sure the teasing will always be there between the two, but it'd be different because now they're basically a couple.

    ReplyDelete
  39. Yeah the purpose was because he assumed that Lisbon was going to say yes right away. He had gotten a yes on her wanting to move with him so he he just assumed that she would say yes to marrying him. If it's one thing men are known for, but not me, is that they assume they know everything.

    ReplyDelete
  40. I never said or thought that there may not be teasing between them, I was saying that if Jane were to do something like a con or something that Lisbon may not like, like he's done in the past. I could see Lisbon doing like a wife would probably do and threaten him with sleeping on the couch or threaten to break up with him as a way to maybe get him to try and behave. Unless that's what you consider teasing?

    ReplyDelete
  41. I don't think there will be tease like those... They're adults :p I think that behaviour is among teenagers and I find it absurd for Jane and Lisbon. Remember, TM is a crime show.

    ReplyDelete
  42. Yeah but remember Lisbon accepted Pike's proposal because she was mad at Jane, and that doesn't scream like she was acting like an adult to me, so I could see her doing something along the lines of telling him that he wouldn't be allowed in bed or threaten to break up if she was mad at him.

    ReplyDelete
  43. It's not in her character, tho...

    ReplyDelete
  44. Remember though people thought that her whole relationship with Pike was out of character for her, so it's not hard to imagine that she may act out of character in the future depending on the situation.

    ReplyDelete
  45. Yeah when Abbott asked for context to have was going on, Jane quickly said how the mwn were innocent and the woman were gulity, though I had meissed him saying how he thought one was an embezzler.

    ReplyDelete
  46. It was a great episode and I really hope that we get lots of Jisbon in those 13 episodes of season 7.

    ReplyDelete
  47. I'm way behind the 8-ball here (I was really busy around the end of the TV season and am only catching up on season finales now), but I have to say it somewhere: I really don't like Jane and Lisbon as a couple. I enjoyed the idea of a TV show that would keep its two main characters having a platonic love for one another. Jane and Lisbon in a romantic relationship - it just feels wrong!
