The Mentalist - Episode 6.20 - Il Tavolo Bianco - Review

May 5, 2014

NOTE: Please be advised that English is not my first language.

With only two episodes left, The Mentalist continues its great storyline involving ordinary girls who have been abducted just to... being sold in a horrible human organs traffic. Daniella is still trying to find her younger sister, and when Cho finds out she's in the old house where the girls were found, I don't know if she's involved with the case in some way. Anyway, around this crazy sick case, the subplot remains the same: Lisbon and her decision whether to move or not to DC. There's even a back to the origin when Red John's murder is put on the table again... Right after Jane bought Lisbon her coffee, he tells her he wishes she could stay. Suddenly Lisbon's full of hope in her eyes, "You do?" but Jane covers his feeling replying she may get bored in DC. Bored? As if the boredom would be an excuse. Then, a couple of agents arrest him and tell Lisbon and Fischer to show up in court. Good line by Jane: "Thomas McAllister may have shot and strangled himself." All this mess reveals to be a fake trial, or as Jane and Abbott call it "Operation Jury Scam." Lisbon was furious with Jane, but this only increases the misunderstandings between them - so Lisbon accepts a quick lunch invite by Pike... this guy seems to follow Lisbon like a shadow more than a boyfriend.

Dennis Abbott is trying everything he can to push Jane and Lisbon together and make them have "the talk". "How long are you going to let that go?" Jane is trying to convince himself he's ok with Teresa leaving, but the truth is he keeps lying to himself. When Abbott notices how Lisbon basically became Jane's female version, he pushs her and Jane to go to dinner at "Il Tavolo Bianco", the italian restaurant where they have to investigate. By the look Kim Fischer shares with Abbott, it's obvious she knows what's going on there. In TM 2.0, Agent Fischer became a close friend to Lisbon, and if she's really thinking about moving, she's gonna miss her and her new team - Jane included, of course. When Kim got shot in the episode, I hope in the next one we'll get to see the two ladies chat, and maybe it'll be Fischer's turn to push Jane and Lisbon together. At the restaurant, Jane points out Lisbon is predictable, but be careful man because "One of these days I might surprise you." A tease for the upcoming episodes? Anyway, Jane only seems to be flirty when he's undercover (see the scene at the nightclub with Fischer) because he doesn't know what a girl wants to hear... or maybe he does, but he's still not so sure. He was married once and he only slept with a woman (Lorelei), so he may be still insure on what to say to a woman he loves.

Pike's tastes about old and classic movies make Lisbon get bored - and she hasn't even landed to DC, so Jane was right! Casablanca is a movie about two lovers who are separated from the fate and a story about a woman who has to choose between two men - ops Teresa! Ilsa (Ingrid Bergman) is married now but she's never forget the love of her life, Rick (Humphrey Bogart). When they meet in Marocco, they share a last moment together before the war crushs, as Ilsa decides to stay with Rick. As long he's been in love with her, Rick tells Ilsa to go with her husband in Lisbon, because it's not safe to be there. Also that "We'll always have Paris" quote makes you think the same will happen with Jane and Lisbon. At the end of the episode, when Jane knocks at Lisbon's house, he does that because he wants to be with her and share a dinner maybe together. His smile fades when Pike opens the door. Lisbon can't believe he only came here to bring her cannoli. In fact, Jane is there to tell her how he feels about her moving to DC - as long she's happy, he's happy too because he only wants the best for her. But the tears they have in their faces are not tears of joy. Those two are not happy shine people. He's letting her go, just like in Casablanca. Like Rick Blaine, Patrick Jane chooses to let go the woman he loves just for her safety. At first, Rick is selfish and still hurt because Ilsa abbandoned him so he wants revenge for her behaviour and chooses not to let her and his fugitive husband go; then he remembers his patriotic spirit of love and sacrifice and desides to let Ilsa be with her husband. Whereas, Jane knows better how important is to leave the ones you love behind in order to get them safe: Jane killed Red John without Lisbon stopping him, most because she let him do that; he stopped being selfish, but he's still a damaged man, so he wants Lisbon to be free because be with him might not be safe. Casablanca was a movie, but life isn't a movie. So, Lisbon might change the end of the movie and surprise Jane, deciding to stay with him - just like Ilsa and Rick were supposed to be together.

Do you think Jane did the right thing by letting Lisbon go? Share your comments below.

  1. He is right to let her make the decision but he should fight, fight for her. For them. It would only be the right thing to do because now they are free, after RJ is dead.
Pike is a nice guy but he is boring, a workoholic like she has been but maybe she wants more? No old black and white movie life.
Funny thing is that Jane likes to make black and white movie comments too (like the Barbra Stanwyk [sp?] comment)

  2. i think the only way lisbon is going to stay is if jane tells her how he feels...

  3. I think he wants her to make the decision. It's funny how Abbott is pushing them together. Pike and Lisbon have no interests in common. Jane needs to realize that it's OK for him to be happy and to love again. Please renew this show.

  4. First of all, amazing episode!!!!

No, I don't think he did the right thing because she doesn't know how he feels. If he she did know, his letting her go would be ok, but she doesn't know. Therefore at this point she can't really choose between those two, because there is nothing to choose from. There is only Pike offering her a life with him in D.C. and Jane doing nothing. Although I don't want to blame it all on Jane. In the last scene when we saw her crying I just thought, why doesn't she say anything. It's not all up to him!! She could tell him that she doesn't want to leave or at least confront him about him just letting her leave. I think he is letting he go because he doesn't feel worthy of her and also because of some commitment issues. He knows that if they got together, it would be very serious right of the bat. And he doesn't know if he is ready for that (after 12 years --> Are you serious?). I just keep wondering what would have happened if Pike hadn't been there ...

Besides the last scene, the one in the restaurant really touch me. When she said: One of these days I might surprise you. And then he says: Oh, please don't. I love that you are so predictable. I really hope that is alluding to a scene in the finale. Maybe she decides to stay, before he has chance to stop her. Even though I wouldn't really want that. I would want her to really yell at him at some point for all the crap he has pulled over the years and for letting her go without saying anything!!

  5. I think that Lisbon being with Pike show us that she is ready for a real relationship. They sleep together, he takes her to dinner, they watch TV together like real couples do. No one is forcing Lisbon to be with Pike, she's with him because she likes him. Jane sees that Pike makes her happy and he's a good guy so Jane can't complain about him. If she stays, can Jane offer that to her? She would be giving up a real relationship to stay with the uncertainty of Jane and he knows this. I think that's why he wants to choose to be happy. Sure he wants her to stay continue to be in that comfort zone of solving cases and avoiding real life with him. But she wants more and I think they both know he can't give her that. Yes, he's sad to lose his friend/partner but he'll let her so that she can be happy in a real relationship.
Loving all the discussion that this show gives us! Even though they give us so little in the ep, there is so much speculation and opinion about it. Renew The Mentalist!!!

  6. Really Pike is a workaholic, he has bearly been seen actually working. He's never been shown nor mention about having to break a date or pushing it back because of a case like Lisbon has been shown having to do.

    ReplyDelete
  7. Jane is going to let her go, but not because of her saftey. I mean she's a cop, she can piss someone off herself which would put her saftey in danger. I mean Volker basically seemed to threaten her life last season. No, he's going to let Lisbon go because he doesn't think he can love again, or not in the way that he feels that she deserves. Really, I don't get why the arc is this long, since it seems that Jane and Lisbon aren't going to get together and that she will leave with Pike, they could have wrapped it up by now, Better yet they should have done this arc earlier in 2.0 or not have brought Lisbon back at all in my opionion.

    ReplyDelete
  8. I think 'safety' here is 'emotional safety'.

    ReplyDelete
  9. Sounds plausable. However, and if I were to assume like most people seem to that Lisbon doesn't really love Pike, how would it be in her best emotional saftey to have her leave and be with a man that she doesn't love.

I think Lisbon on some level loves Pike because I find it hard to believe that Lisbon would choose to move to DC, which she appears to decide to do next week, with a man that she doesn't love on some level.

  10. he manage to make time for her but thats the point. i mean how long have they been together when he got the promotion he puts over their relationship?
for he feels like being one

  11. Amazing episode, from 'white as the driven snow' all the episodes are been great.
I think the tension between Jane and Lisbon was arrived at the top, she's trying to find out in every possible way what he really thinks about DC but they seem to speak more with their eyes than with words; i mean, jane continues with the same old answer about want her happiness that is really sweet and a strong demonstration of love but I don't understand why he doesn't try to figure out if she's really happy or what she really wants..why doesn't he give a chance to himself?I guess it's only a question of time, I know that she has to decide independently but I think it's right for her to have all the possibilities in mind and for this we should wait until Blue bird. I'm totally agree with you about Pike, he seems too urgent with her, considering that she's always been so independent (Breakfast at Tiffany's feels). We have only to wait and be patient, great review as always Diana.

    ReplyDelete
  12. But if he is able to make time for her then how is he a workaholic? By definition a workaholic only cares about work and probably wouldn't make time for people of things outside of work. Sort of like how Lisbon seemed to be back when they were at the CBI.

Yes Lisbon and Pike's relationship has happened very fast, which is in part why I believe that on some level Lisbon is in love with Pike. Since to me the only reason you would decide to move with someone you knew for a short time would be if you were in love with the other person. Or at least I would.

If Lisbon and Pike don't end up together, then it would prove what I kind of picked up on in last nights episode which is that Pike seems to just fall in love and assumes that whatever is there at the start will always last and things will go his way. Which is probably why he is divorced because at somepoint it ended up not working between him and his ex wife. (I kind of picked up on that when he and Lisbon were on the couch since I would think that a guy would be worried if the person they love couldn't talk to me about what they might be feeling about a possible move, or at least I know I would. It also shows that he is partly aware that she may have feelings for Jane. It could also explain why he will purpose so soon after Lisbon says yes to moving wiith him.) However that doesn't really change my mind about Jane and Lisbon possibly getting together. I still don't think it will happen, I mean if learning that Lisbon agrees to move with Pike, assuming that Lisbon says yes before the end of next weeks episode and Jane learns about her saying yes before the end of the episode, doesn't spar him to act and admit that he loves her or do anything to stop her, then I don't see how Pike proposing could possibly cause him to admit he has feelings and possibly try and stop her.

    ReplyDelete
  13. I know if Lisbon has feelings for Jane and wants to be with him then she can easily say something.

Not to mention as you said Lisbon has known Jane for 12 years, and claims to know him. If she did then she should have noticed how Jane seemed to have wanted to say something diffrent then he was at the end of last nights episode. Not to mention that had Jane known about her possibly leaving before she told him, that he would have said something reguardless if he was okay with it or not. I mean Jane rarley seems to not have an opionion on anything and never seems to be able to keep himself from butting into other people's busniess.

    ReplyDelete
  14. I don't get the last sentence. Can you rephrase somehow?

    ReplyDelete
  15. I don't think she loves him. She loves how much he cares about her and she knows that he is a really good man who has all the attributes she is looking for (he is a terrible lier, he says what's on his mind, ...). So she only considers going with him because she thinks Jane doesn't really care if she is leaving or not and Pike the seemingly perfect man really wants her to go with him. I am 100% certain that in the end she will be staying!!

    ReplyDelete
  16. Basically I'm saying that if Jane doesn't tell Lisbon how he feels about her after learning that she said yes to moving with Pike, then I don't get why hearing that Pike porposed to her will cause him to finally admit how he feels.

    ReplyDelete
  17. Or at least no common has yet been shown. I said how Lisbon and Pike hadn't been shown doing anything except having dinner and then the next two episodes they show them going to a movie and staying in. So my bet is that either next week or in the finale they will probably show them having a common intrest or two.

    ReplyDelete
  18. Ahh, ok. Are you sure he is going to propose to her (as in marriage)?

    ReplyDelete
  19. Why would they do that? I think they are building up this storyline so that in the season finale Jane and Lisbon finally get together :-)

    ReplyDelete
  20. Heller and everything that's been hinted at the finale makes it seem that Pike is going to propose as in marriage. I mean personally I can't think of anything else propose could refer to. I mean the finale is said to be romantic, and if Jane and Lisbon don't get together, I can't think of how it could possibly be romantic except for Pike propsing to Lisbon.

    ReplyDelete
  21. Jane and Lisbon are definitely getting together!!! And the finale being romantic most certainly refers to Jane and Lisbon. I thought the "proposal" that was hinted at in several spoilers referred to Pike asking her to go with him to D.C. That's also a type of proposal, right?

    ReplyDelete
  22. Thanks for reading :) yes I agree with you about Pike.

    ReplyDelete
  23. Well Pike has been shown to be really in love with Lisbon, and since she agrees to move with him to DC it would seem that she feels the same way and that she wants a future with him so it's only logical for him to propose since you propse to the person you love and want to spend the rest of your life with.

It's the whole Jane finally realizing how he feels for Lisbon and doing something after Pike proposes to her, assuming that Pike propsoes early in the episode, and not after learning that Lisbon desides to move to DC that confuses me.

    ReplyDelete
  24. Hi Mark thanks for reading and commenting my reviews. I don't think Heller said something about a marriage proposal...

    ReplyDelete
  25. Thanks for reading! yes, as proposal Heller wanted to say Pike's promotion.

    ReplyDelete
  26. Thanks for confirming! :-)

    ReplyDelete
  27. Hi thanks for reading Bonnie :) Lisbn fell asleep twice during a movie with Pike... er bad sign.

    ReplyDelete
  28. Pike already asked Lisbon tif she would move with him to DC back in episode 18, besides thats not what most people would consider a proposal. Most people consider a proposal as in getting married.

I wish I could share in your belief, but to me everything is pointing to Lisbon and Pike ending up together.

    ReplyDelete
  29. Pike may be in love with Lisbon but he's constantly around her! I mean if I had a boyfriend like that, always present in my life, who shows at work every single time, I'd soffocated!

    ReplyDelete
  30. No way!! If they (the writers) wanted her to end up with Pike they wouldn't have written all these painful-to-watch-scenes between Jane and Lisbon. They would have just let that storyline go and have them be friends. At this point it can only go one way and that is Jisbon!!!! :-)

    ReplyDelete
  31. He said it in one of those websites where you ask the person questions. Someone asked if Kisbon and Jane would get together by the end of the season and the reply was that Heller said that it might not be what the person expects and that Pike was going to be proposing to Lisbon in the finale. There have been a few other articles that have also make it seem that Pike will indeed propose marrige. (And if somehow it doesn't mean propsal in marriage, then it's a very good lie.) I'll try and find the page.

Your welcome, though yet again I hadn't noticed that you were the writer, but thats probably because I normally don't look to see who the writer is.

    ReplyDelete
  32. How would that be any diffrent then if Lisbon and Jane got together though, I mean Jane and Lisbon would be working together.

Here is what was said in TV Guide. ""It's a romantic finale rather than a [suspenseful] finale," creator Bruno Heller says. But that might not mean exactly what you think. In fact, after a quick courtship, Agent Pike will propose to Lisbon. Will Jane give the couple his blessing, or will he decide to confront his unresolved feelings for Lisbon? Either way, Heller promises closure."

    ReplyDelete
  33. If she really thinks that Jane doesn't want her to go then she doesn't know him, because it was basically written on his face that he was having trouble saying what he was saying, and I highly doubt Jane would have gone to her house just to tell her that he wants her to be happy.

I'm still not sure, I think Jane is going to let her go. If Jane and Lisbon end up getting together the only way I see it happening is if Lisbon realizes she really wants to be with Jane and breaks up with Pike. Though I don't even think that may happen.

    ReplyDelete
  34. Because all the scenes with Jane and Lisbon are probably ment to be red herrings, to make everyone espcially the Jisbon fans to think that they may get together, just like earlier this season they had at one time made all the Red John suspects look like they could have been Red John. I mean do you think that the Jisbon fans would be watching if they announced or made it clear that Jane and Lisbon weren't going to get together?

    ReplyDelete
  35. The thing with the Red John suspects was totally different! And of course they wouldn't announce that Jane and Lisbon don't get together the same way they didn't announce that they will get together. It's a TV Show!!

And in the end why wouldn't they want them to become a couple after spending 6 years writing a script that was meant to arouse suspicions that Jane and Lisbon were a little more than just friends? And now that probably about 90% of the fans want them to be together, they can't just pull back and say it was all a joke. They won't do that, simply for financial reasons ;-)

    ReplyDelete
  36. Hey, I hope I'm wrong. Like I've said I would like Jane and Lisbon to end up together, it's just I don't think it's going to happen.

Remember though at the start it was said that they weren't sure if they wanted Jane and Lisbon to end up together, so really it is possible that they never meant for Jane and Lisbon to get together it's just the way they were portraied that caused it to look like they could get together.

Hey alot of fans of the Red John story line are unhappy with who Red John was and how that ended, and even Heller himself admitted that he hadn't desided who RJ was until it came time to end the story line.

Not to mention that Heller had said earlier that after Red John not everyone will have a happily ever after, so depending on what you consider he could have meant by after Red John.

Like you said it's a TV show, so just because Jane and Lisbon have these scenes doesn't mean they will be getting together, I mean they are the only people they let get close to each other, so it would be slightly odd if they didn't have scenes like they are having if one were or possibly were leaving.

    ReplyDelete
  37. two are the things...If Lisbon is going with Pike there is going to be a seventh season, if she is getting together with Jane, is the end of the series.
I want to be wrong...I love the taught of Jane and Lisbon fighteing crime and then go home to cuddle in bed...But that doesn't sell much.

    ReplyDelete
  38. That makes sence. However how can someone be happy with a person they truly do not love? I mean if it were me, it wouldn't matter if they were offering me something that I may want, if I don't love the person I'm not going to move away with them.

    ReplyDelete
  39. Well, if I was Lisbon, I would be thinking about present. I like this man, he's offering me a future with him... lets try it. Doesn't work? I'm still a new woman, I can live without Jane.

    That's how I see it :)

    ReplyDelete
  40. Two words: Castle, Bones.

    ReplyDelete
  41. I admit that that makes sense, It's more to me that if I didn't love the person, then I'd just be hurting them in the long run by accepting their offer of a future together, espically if they seemed to be in love with me. From watch my sisters in their relationships, the one thing that has to be there is love, otherwise your just, in my opionion wasting time.

    ReplyDelete
  42. True, however with both those shows showed that their main characters (Castle and Beckett, Bones and Booth repectfully) were attracted to if not in love with each other at the start of the respected shows so of course them figting crime and being in bed together would sell. The Mentalist didn't go that route with Jane and Lisbon, sure they gave slight possible hints at the start, but it wasn't until, in my opionion, the end of the thrid season/start of the fourth that they really started to show that they could have feelings for the other. So it wouldn't sell as much as it does with Castle and Bones, especially when there seems to be just as many fans for Jane and Lisbon getting together as there seems to be not wanting them to get together.

    ReplyDelete
  43. Lets just hope for good writing, in case of happily ever after or not :)

    ReplyDelete
  44. I think that depends on what a person wants to have happen and how much a person lets what they want effect what they are watching. (I mean I had no problem with how Red John was wrapped up, but those fans who really liked the story line and believed what they saw were very disappointed in it.)

Personally I don't like love triangles, so it's hard for me to see any good writing right now, I also have the same problem when a producer or someone tries to hype up an episode or something that will happen I always feel like it never quiet lived up to how it was presented. Though that's just me.

    ReplyDelete
  45. Thank you Ali :) Breakfast at Tiffany's is always in my heart lol

    ReplyDelete
  46. Thank you for reading! Not necessary a couple being together means the end of the show.

    ReplyDelete
  47. He was teasing! Have you seen Lisbon's face at the end of episode 20? She was crying! Do you think that's the happy face of someone who wants to move to DC with her boyfriend?

    ReplyDelete
  48. And for all I know he may not have been teasing. I mean the best way to hind the truth is to make it look like something else is either going to happen or is happening, so for all anybody knows what is happening on screen is being done to make everybody think that one thing may happen ( In this case that in the finale that Lisbon isn't really happy and therefore could end up getting together with Jane) while the oppisite may end up happening.

Lisbon crying doesn't mean that she that she isn't happy about moving to DC with Pike. She could have easily been crying because she took what Jane said as that he doesn't care if she stays or goes and that maybe he never really cared for her at all.

As for the end of episode 20, if I were Jane, I could see it happening the way it did, that being said however knowing myself, I probably would have a little more forcefull in wanting to leave which would probably would have lead whoever I was there to see to be alittle more insistant in knowing why I was there which would probably lead to me blurting out whatever I had gone there to say.

All the facts here so far that have been said about what is going to happen, seem to point towards Lisbon leaving with Pike, if the facts were to change then my opionion would most likely change. But nothing has changed.

    ReplyDelete
  49. She's crying because Jane didn't give her a proper reason do not move to DC... because Jane was simply disappointed to see Pike at the doorstep and not her... He was thinking she was going to be with Pike at the end. For Jane is not easy to express his feelings. Anyway, if you REALLY loves someone you don't need to cry because your best friend doesn't give you a reason to stay... unless you're in love with him\her.

    ReplyDelete
  50. Lisbon though has been shown to get a bit emotional when it comes to people she cares about, remember she cried at Bosco's bedside, and she never showed being in love with him.

Really saying I want you to be happy wasn't proper, I mean if Lisbon loves Jane and thinks she will be happy with him isn't that a proper reason not to leave with Pike? I mean if it were me I probably would have responed what if I'm happy with you, or what if being with you makes me happy. or what if the thought of being more then your friend/partner makes me happy. I mean to me nobody can logically make a decision without admitting your feelings.

    ReplyDelete
  51. It does make any sense talking about Bosco... that was a different situation. Jane was about to say to her to stay with him, but think about: you go to a girl you love and you find out there's another man in her house... Of course you're confused and you think she's gonna leave you for him. Jane only wants Lisbon to be happy and since he thinks she's happy with Pike, he said those things. But she's crying and he's crying too, and of course none of them is happy. Just read between the lines.

    ReplyDelete
  52. I didn't mean I would do anything diffrent from Jane's point of view, though I'm normally easy to read so it would have been easy to tell that I wanted to say more, and therefore most likely goaded into saying why I was there.

Just because you are reading between the lines doesn't mean you are going to get the outcome you want or are right.

Like I've said I hope that I am wrong, but I don't feel like I'm going to. (Especially when I discovered that I was right about part of what is going to happen on the next episode of another TV show with very little to suggest that what I thought was going to happen was going to happen.)
