The 100 - Episode 1.09 - Unity Day - Review: The best Unity Day ever

16 May 2014

In this week's episode of The 100, the Ark and the 100 on Earth celebrate Unity Day, the day that the 12 space stations came together to form the Ark. As it turns out, this year is the best Unity Day ever. Well, sort of.

Celebrations for Unity Day on the Ark include a speech from Jaha (though he left out the best part, according to Diana) and the telling of the Ark's origin story by some children. However, in the middle of the story, a bomb suddenly explodes and kills six people (RIP Kane's mom). Jaha fears it's a coup, and suspicion immediately falls on Diana as she left the scene seconds before the explosion. Indeed the bombing was part of her plan but when she delivers a suspect to Jaha and Kane, there is no more focus on her. She then proceeds as planned to get the first dropship ready for a launch. The dropship, however, is set to contain only 'her' people, the working people, and not the people who the Counsil had planned to take the first ticket to Earth. As the bombing suspect escapes, almost letting Kane freeze to death, Jaha and Kane realize that they're planning a dropship launch and attempt to stop it. While only 50% of Diana's people are on board, she still decides to go ahead with her plan. Even Abby, who is an accidental stowaway on the ship, can't stop Diana. Then Jaha realizes that the rest of the Ark will go dark if the dropship launches, begging the former Chancellor to stop this madness. But Diana is firm, and eventually the dropship disconnects from the Ark and is on its way to Earth, leaving behind the dark Ark. How is that for unity?

Things are not much better on Earth. Sure, they are partying at first and Bellamy even manages to convince Clarke to have some fun. But during that party, Octavia sneeks away to see Lincoln. Finn follows her and gives the Grounder his knife back. He also says he wants to broker peace with the Grounders because he doesn't want a war when the first dropship comes down. Lincoln will talk to his boss, but tells Finn he wants Clarke as representative of the 100. So just as Clarke is having some fun in the camp, Finn breaks up the party and tells her about the possible truce. She agrees to a meeting, but warns Bellamy behind Finn's back and tells him to bring some backup. Bellamy brings Raven and Jasper with guns, even though both sides agreed there would be no weapons. During the talk, the Grounder's leader, named Anya, reveals to Clarke that the flares they shot in episode 5 destroyed an entire village. As the two female leaders continue their little talk, Jasper spots an armed Grounder in the tree and fires a shot. The meeting is of course broken up as everybody hastens away.
The two tribes now definitely seem to be at war with one another. Finn is mad at Clarke for not trusting him, though Clarke has a point that there would be no armed Grounders. Obviously Octavia is mad too, especially at the somewhat jealous Jasper. As Clarke and Bellamy keep talking, they notice an object, presumably the dropship, coming down to Earth. But Clarke notes that it's going too fast and that there is no parachute, and the object crashes and explodes as Clarke is left in shock.

That was quite an explosive episode, wasn't it? It certainly blew me (literally) away. The Ark scenes were quite impressive and once again we saw an emotional side to Kane (Henry Ian Cusick did great there!). The theme of Unity Day went in the completely opposite direction, both on the Ark and on Earth. The events on board the Ark will likely create more chaos and more rebellion against the Counsil now that the truth is also revealed. On Earth, the wedge between the 100 and the Grounders has only grown after the hositle meeting, though there lies some hope in Octavia and Lincoln.

I don't think Abby really died in that explosion. Though I have no idea how she got out of there, I just don't buy it that she's dead. Perhaps the object that crashed wasn't really the dropship, or it was only part of it. Perhaps the ship is still in space and hasn't even gotten close to Earth. At this point, it's all just speculation.

What did you think of this episode? Did it blow you away or did you see the explosions coming? Will there now be a full-scale war between the 100 and the Grounders? How can the Ark get back on its feet again? And do you believe the crashing object was the dropship, killing Abby and Diana along with a few others?

Check out a promo for next week's episode here.

I really liked this episode, while not the best of the season a marked improvement on last week's- which was still quite good.
I'm not really buying how fast things are going between Octavia and Lincon, but that would be my only complain about the episode, everything else worked quite great and the ending was jaw dropping. I also don't buy that Abby is dead, but wouldn't it be one of the most shocking moments this season of TV if it was?

I loved the Ark scenes. I think the show is finding a good balance between the kids and the adults storylines.
Anya is a very interesting character and I hope we get to see more of her.

Usually when a show is split between two locations or time zones or groups of characters I'll always have more interest in one than the other. When it jumps to one set I'll be shouting "go back to the others, I don't care!!" at the TV. Not so with The 100. What's happening on The Ark is just as intriguing as what's happening on Earth and they always manage to find a way to tie both stories together, even in the episodes before they were actually in contact with each other.
Another thing this show is very good at is the little twists as well as the big. Clarke going to meet Anya thinking 1) it was pointless and 2) that she was in the right because the Grounders were savages only to have that whole situation flipped on it's head. The talks were kind of pointless but only because Clarke couldn't actually guarantee anything once the people from the Ark started coming down and then the fact that everything they had done since they came down, when viewed from the other side, were acts of aggression. Jasper firing the first shots only back this idea up.
Sure, you have your big twists, like Diane staging a coup and maybe crippling the Ark but then the smaller twists can have as much impact on the story too. Judging by the trailer for next week the failed talks will have a massive impact.
The "twist" I like the most here is the idea that the first "back up" to land may well be a ship full of angry mutineers who are highly unlikely to take orders or even advice from a bunch of juvenile delinquents. A war on two fronts may be what's facing the remainder of The 100.

Great comment :) I love what Bellamy said I don't remember the words exactly but he meant that the moment the first ship lands they are back to being kids and the adults will take control of the group.
I'm sure most people didn't survive that crash. I hope Clarke's mom is safe and I want them to keep Diane. I have never seen Kate Vernon in anything before but she is really good.

  5. This show is great but... Stop the love triangle (Clarke, Finn and Raven) AND WTF with Octavia/Lincoln? She kwow him since.. what.. 2 hours ? and now he's the love of his life? Please Jason Rothenberg. Stop that !

  6. Yeah, things are going fast between Octavia and Lincoln. But then again, most of the show's storylines move fast instead of dragging them out, which is what makes The 100 a great show to watch.

Abby's death would be shocking indeed, but I still think The Calling was one of the most shocking moments.

  7. I think so too. It also helps that both storylines are now interesting, whereas therehave been episodes where either the Ark or Earth part is better.
Hope we get the Grounders' story fully explored and yes, Anya should return.

  8. I agree. Both locations are very interesting. The show has a good balance between the Ark scenes and the Earth scenes.
I like what you said about the twists. It will be interesting to see how it's all gonna play out. As you said, the failed talks will probably have quite an impact. And then you also have the mutiny coming down to Earth (if they survived). If they don't start a war right away, it's likely they will after more dropships are coming down.

  9. I agree about the love triangle, but I think we should be glad it doesn't take front and center like other CW shows. It's still more on the background, although I'd like to see it completely gone too.

And Octavia/Lincoln, well, everything in this show moves fast so their love does too. I'm not a big fan of it, especially because it makes for another love triangle if you include Jasper, but again it's not the primary focus of the show.

  11. Thanks for the review, I enjoy reading it a lot! The 100 is one of those show that surprise me in terms of how good it turns out to be.I like the grey areas that this show goes to, the shifting alliances, the complex characters and the complicated situation they face.

I am fine with Octavia-Lincoln, I like them in fact. You have to remember that Octavia is a prisoner for most of her life, first within the small quarters at the ark, then an actual cell. I can understand how she thirst for life, how she would want to experience as much as possible as fast as possible.

Life on earth could be really short, they lost a number of people already. It would surprise me if Lincoln witnessed the ship when it crash landed. Who jumped out first rather fearlessly? Octavia! That would impressed a warrior like Lincoln. That said I also hope that the love stories remains interwoven as parts of the bigger plot and not become the focus of the show..

Anyway, great episode, can't wait for things to unfold next week.

  12. By far one of the strongest episodes so far, thanks to the toning down of the stupid love triangles. Survival is more important and that would naturally be the focus. Even though Jasper shot first, given the tree dudes went from stationary to getting ready to fire, it seemed justified since only Jasper knew what was really going on. Both groups were armed and didn't trust one another so neither side was blameless. Lincoln felt betrayed by his side, but Clarke didn't come empty either. That's good writing to keep the moral righteousness nebulous. I expect a counter-attack first, but with the grounder leader shot and bleeding-out it may be her underlings not herself orchestrating it. Clarke and every leader so far can relate to that. It may lead to the Clarke's mother doctor (if she survived) to heal the bullet wounds and bridge animosities. Having shown strength where doubt existed the 100 may not be taken lightly again. Peace may be contingent on Clarke representing the Arklings over other adults though. Lots of possibilities.

Meanwhile Octavia getting it on with every dude that happens to cross her path can only lead to problems in not exactly a safe-sex environment. She walks away without consideration from Bellamy and Jasper and it a waste of time to talk to. I hate that. If she hadn't saved Lincoln the character would be hard to like at all. Tensions are high so open conversations should be more normal, not plot devices. When a 5 min conversation can solve a problem is when I have a problem with plots. Hopefully we learn more about the Grounders coming up and don't recede backwards with subplots.

  13. Also what about Raven? Is a genius engineer really an emotional basketcase? I don't buy it that one can exist with the other. Engineers build societies

I don't see Octavia/Lincoln/Jasper as a love triangle because other than giving Jasper a kiss for saving her and trying to stand up to Murphy she's shown no real interest in him. It's not a love triangle in the true sense of the term.
As for how fast Lincoln and Octavia are going I think you have to bare in mind how Octavia grew up. She's been locked up in one way or another for her whole life. This is her first taste of freedom, of being able to make her own choices and experiencing pretty much everything. That's not to say it's a good idea or it's going to end well but I think it's not that unrealistic that she'd be so into him so quickly.

Jasper/Octavia/Lincoln is just a made up love triangle. Octavia isn't interested in Jasper like that and Jasper is smart enough to know he doesn't stand a chance with her.

Also I'm tired of tv shows where men sleep around but women can't. Sex is just sex.
